Troubled retailer GAME could lose up to £2.5 million in profits by not selling EA's forthcoming sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 3.
That's according to one analyst, who said that lost sales and compensation to those that pre-ordered the game will add to the retailer's woes in a year of struggle on the High Street.
"Working on the assumption that a decent triple A title sells 0.8m-1m titles in the first few weeks of release in the UK and assuming Game has around 20% share, we calculate that by not stocking Mass Effect 3, Game is potentially missing out on around £6m-£7m of revenues in the UK given the title will retail for £39.99," said Mark Photiades of Singer Capital Markets, reports The Guardian.
"With new software margins of around 24 per cent this could result in £1.5m-£2m of lost gross profit in the current year. It is also worth noting that margins will suffer as a result of the reward card points being offered in compensation. We estimate this could amount to another £0.3m of forgone gross profit as typically pre-orders account for around 30% of initial sales. So in total there could be £2m-£2.5m of lost UK profit in a year where we are already forecasting losses of £8m."
It emerged this week that GAME would not be stocking any of Electronic Arts' games in March following a dispute over credit. GAME is offering those that pre-ordered the highly anticipated title refunds and £5 worth of reward card points to spend in store.
John Stevenson of Peel Hunt was more positive about the retailer, believing that the disposal of International and some UK stores will help the retailer in the longer term.
"Given recent events, further speculation and the loss of key titles will clearly not help customer confidence, future pre-order levels or Game's overall negotiations with banks, suppliers and wider stakeholders," stated Stevenson.
"That aside, the group is continuing to develop a strategic plan, which we believe will likely result in the disposal of international operations and some UK store closures. The potential for new major console releases will be a significant source of future revenue and cash generation for the group, which will be critical to underpinning any recovery plan."

Trials Evolution, the next installment in the addictive time-trial franchise from developer RedLynx, may be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade on April 18, if an Xbox Live Marketplace listing is to be believed.
Discovered by the folks at Eurogamer, the listing for Trials Evolution (now pulled, but captured above) originally listed the April release before disintegrating into nothingness -- like our chances of reaching the top of theTrials HD leaderboards. As the leaked date falls on a Wednesday, it would follow Microsoft's typical release schedule for the Xbox Live Arcade.
Joystiq has contacted Ubisoft, parent company of the Finnish developer, to find out if they're ready to spill the beans on a release date. We just can't wait to scream at our televisions for fudging up our balance ... again and again.

French retailer Fnac has published an ad on its website claiming that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be released on November 12th2012.
The ad has long since vanished, but not before it was snapped by Gamepur.
The November 12th date could, of course, be nothing other than an educated guess. Note, too, that the 12th is a Monday – Call of Duty’s have for some time had worldwide releases on a Tuesday to correspond with the normal US weekly release schedule.
Either way, the date is bound to be at least roughly accurate. Modern Warfare 3 (November 8th), Black Ops (November 9th), Modern warfare 2 (November 10th), World at War (November 11th), Modern Warfare (November 7th) and Call of Duty 3 (November 7th) have all stuck to the same pattern.
The likeliest candidates for the game’s actual release are either November 6th or November 13th.
The bigger question is the name of the game.
It’s not the first time that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has been tipped. But it would represent a slight deviation from the norm, with the series historically alternating between Modern Warfare releases from Infinity Ward every two years and individually titled Treyarch-developed titles in each year in between.
Black Ops was a huge commercial success, however, and Activision would most likely welcome a second successful COD IP to run alongside Modern Warfare.

BioShock Infinite will be released for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 19 in Europe, developer Irrational Games has confirmed.
Ken Levine, president and creative director, said: "After BioShock, we had a vision for a followup that dwarfed the original in scope and ambition. BioShock Infinite has been our sole focus for the last four years, and we can't wait for fans to get their hands on it.
In January, the studio announced 1999 Mode, which more strictly rations health, weaponry and powers, and requires that players pick specialisations and stick with them for the duration. It was designed in response to a poll on the studio's website.
A post on the PlayStation Blog to announce the release date reveals that the PlayStation 3 version will support the Move controller; further details are promised soon.

Resident Evil pre-order numbers are through the roof, Capcom says.
The firm believes Operation Raccoon City can defy the depressed market and attract a wider audience than just the core Resident Evil fan.
“Our pre-order figures have given us a huge amount of confidence that the title will perform well despite the current conditions at UK retail,” said UK product manager Karl Reader.
“Consumers are buying brands they can trust. The Resident Evil brand is synonymous with high production values and quality gaming experiences. We have an extensive DLC plan to further that longevity.
“We know our Resident Evil audience very well; the real challenge is to captivate a wider audience with a new take on team-based action horror. We couldn’t be in a stronger position to achieve just that.”
The game will be backed by mobile ads, homepage takeovers and a variety of ‘rich media’ marketing.
Operation Raccoon City hits shelves on March 23rd for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Some eight months later, Resident Evil 6 arrives on the same formats.
“Resident Evil 6 pre-orders are very strong too, given that we’ve yet to announce any pre-order offerings or partners,” Reader added.
3DS title Resident Evil Revelations debuted at No.6 in the Top 40 in January.

Sean Tracy, a technical designer with Crytek, has tweeted his attendance at a developer summit rumoured to feature the next Microsoft console.
"Enjoying the Durango developers summit in London. So far, great swag and interesting talks".
The tweet has since been deleted, but sparked excitement in the industry as Durango is the rumoured working title of the next Xbox.
A quick scan of the industry's help wanted advertisements adds extra weight to the suggestion the Microsoft is preparing a new console, as a large number specifically mention next-generation development.
Bethesda, Ready At Dawn, Rockstar North, Lionhead, Microsoft Studios, Creative Assembly, Kojima Productions and Infinity Ward are all apparently working on projects for new consoles.
"Are you ready to work on an exciting new AAA IP for a Next-Generation home console game system?" asked the God Of War: Chains of Olympus developer, while Kojima Productions ask for engineers for "next-gen game engine technology." RockStar North required someone with "the skill to get the most from next-gen consoles." The reference to next-gen was then quietly removed from the posting.
Bethesda recently recruited for programmers for "future-generation consoles," while Infinity Ward asked for animators with "an interest in working with next-generation technologies." Microsoft Studios was looking for people to join a team already at work "on a next-generation project."
And Microsoft Studio Lionhead, which is rumoured to be planning a big announcement at next week's GDC, recently made mention of "implementing modern rendering engines (DX11)" in a recruitment posting. The current Xbox 360 only supports DX9.

Alex Seropian recently left Disney Interactive to form his own mobile studio, Industrial Toys, but prior to that Seropian was a co-founder at Bungie. Now that Bungie has handed the hit Halo franchise over to Microsoft, some are wondering if the Redmond giant can do the series justice. Seropian recently told GameSpot that he believes the series is in good hands.
"I don't think I can be anything other than hopeful that it will be great. We'll see. Halo is one of the crown jewels in the Microsoft gaming IP, if not the crown jewel, so you would expect nothing less than for them to take the time needed and apply the resources needed to make it great," said Seropian.
"I would be pretty surprised if they wiffed it. Maybe it will bring a fresh perspective, and that's so hard because there's so many fans that are used to a particular thing that bringing something new is often…it's hard to bring something new to a franchise that's so established. I'm looking forward to it."
Seropian left Bungie in 2002, a year after the release of Halo on the original Xbox, so he's been an outsider of the title's continuing development.
"I've been an observer for a while now. So much has gone on with the franchise. I will say the encouraging thing is that I know a lot of the folks at Microsoft working on it and they are great people. I'm very hopeful that the team there is very fantastic. They are certainly treating it with a lot of care and respect. And applying the resources you'd like to see applied to a franchise like that. I'm hopeful that it will continue to bring the high production value and cool experiences it's known for," he added.

The existence of an Xbox 720 developer event appears to have been leaked through a harmless Tweet by a Crytek developer claiming to be on location.

There were two specific incidents when I decided I just couldn't do it', says Greg Goodrich
The furore surrounding the Taliban’s inclusion in the multiplayer of 2010’s Medal of Honor reboot nearly caused the executive producer on the project to quit, it has been revealed.
During 2010, politicians, media outlets, NATO soldiers and their families put pressure on publisher EA to omit the faction from the game, whilst others called for an all out ban on the title.
The controversy eventually ended when EA relented and developer Danger Close changed the playable Taliban faction’s name to ‘Opposing Force’.
In an interview with Games Master, executive producer on the title Greg Goodrich claimed he had twice written a letter of resignation and had sleepless nights over the matter.
"Having to deal with the secrecy of these communities, keeping their reputations intact and holding their livelihoods in the palm of my hand - not even having earned the right to yet... then having that break out,” he said.

EA's decision to reboot the Syndicate with a first-person shooter was "the right choice", the gargantuan video game publisher has insisted. Both publisher EA and Swedish developer Starbreeze have discussed the development of the game, which launched last week.EA's decision to go first-person for today's Syndicate angered many fans of the much-loved strategy series and this, Starbreeze admitted, added pressure to the development. But EA said it was the right choice, given how old those strategy games are - and the fact that they're still around."It's been nearly 20 years since the original Syndicate came out back in 1993," EA's producer on the game, Jeff Gamon, told Eurogamer."So a lot of people playing this game would probably have heard of the original Syndicate but not necessarily have played it. Obviously we get asked a lot about the reaction of fans of the original to us taking it into first-person direction. But we have to maintain that was the right decision."Why remake that classic in its original form when it's still out there? So with a whole new audience and tastes in video games, and a whole new suite of platforms to develop for, the game we made was the right choice."For developer Starbreeze, which began pre-production on Syndicate with a small team in 2007, it knew from the start it faced an uphill battle convincing the veteran fans of the merits of the project."I knew that no matter what we did people would have strong opinions about it," lead co-op programmer Lars Magnus Lang said. "I can be the same with some games, also. I can still feel like, oh, did they have to do that?"So, absolutely, it was quite a bit of pressure to live up to those expectations. We knew that we really couldn't do that. Unless we made it into an RTS they would not be happy. But if we had made it an RTS we would have made only those people happy.""Unless we made it into an RTS they would not be happy. But if we had made it an RTS we would have made only those people happy."
Lars echoed Gamon's comment about Syndicate being new for most modern gamers."They might have heard of it, but most people haven't played it," he said. "We wanted to cater to those people also, to everyone. I'd rather make a really good game for our players and make them really enjoy it, than just make a copy of an old game with updated graphics. That's not that super fun for either the end user or us. That game already exists."He pointed to the job Bethesda faced making Fallout 3, which caused controversy among hardcore Fallout fans for going first-person."I remember Fallout 3 also had the same thing. It is kind of forgotten now because it was great. Almost everyone liked it. There's always a few…"We make it good on its own merits, then we take the universe, the setting, the cyberpunk, and really be true to the original Syndicate, and that's it. "Syndicate endured a somewhat protracted development, although both EA and Starbreeze are keen not to go into too much detail. We do know that Starbreeze went back to the drawing board after a year of production because both the developer and EA agreed the game that was being made wasn't right. We also know that the game's co-op portion - perhaps its best - only came into place later on in development."We started off with a small team and probably going in the wrong direction," Gamon revealed. "It probably took a year before we figured out what we wanted to do with it and started building that in anger."We're grateful to have the opportunity to spend that time rather than being forced to get it done and out the door. It's not often you get the opportunity to take the time you need to make it as good as you'd like it to be."

If you can make the right choices in this interactive text adventure, you too can see a teaser video for Klei Entertainment's upcoming Xbox game Mark of the Ninja.
Due this summer, Mark of the Ninja is a side-scrolling "stealth ninja game" with heavily stylized graphics, that involves reticle-targeted ninja devices like a grappling hook, caltrops, and throwing knives. Judging by the clip (and the preceding text game), the goal is to set up traps for unsuspecting enemies, and kill them undetected.
The video suggests that Mark of the Ninja is a Microsoft Studios-published game, which, combined with the release window, makes it a very likely candidate for a Summer of Arcade promotion.

It must be terrifying to be a developer on a game that's just barely greenlit, facing down publisher meetings that could make or break all the hard work you've put into a particular project. Come to think of it, the stress and constant panicked feeling would probably be similar to how the prostitutes in London felt every nightfall during Jack the Ripper's heyday. Maybe.
F.3.A.R. developer Day 1 Studios knows how both of those things feel, to some extent, having begun work on Gotham by Gaslight, a steampunk-inspired adaptation of a one-shot Batman graphic novel, only to have it canceled shortly after. We previously got a peek at some concept art for the title, and now Siliconera has uncovered an animation test that it says comes from someone at Day 1.
Check out the burly Batman's flowing cloak as he strides around a dark London setting right here.

EA's space-age campaign has already had an astronomical effect, with pre-orders placing ‘well ahead’ of where the publisher was at the same point with Mass Effect 2.
The publisher has been sending weather balloons into space with copies of the new game and GPS devices attached to them. Consumers can track their movements on the Mass Effect website and try to find them when they land.
On top of this, Electronic Arts is building a ‘triple-A campaign’ to support the game, the publisher told MCV.
“TV, cinema, online, print and outdoor activity will help capture the mainstream audience,” said EA product manager Will Graham.
“For the core Mass Effect fan, we’ve been building on the immersive nature of the game with a host of trailers, social media activity and fan site activation.
“Currently our pre-orders have broken the targets set, we are well ahead of where we were at the same point with Mass Effect 2 and we have all of the platforms aligned for launch, which is a first for the Mass Effect franchise,” Graham added.
“Mass Effect 3 follows on from a 96 Metacritic-rated game and everything suggests that the third iteration in the franchise is going to have the same, if not better, quality.”
