Xbox 360 just came off a record November, with more than 1.7 million units sold in the U.S., but behind closed doors Microsoft is planning its next move for the successor to the popular console. Plenty of Xbox 720 rumors have surfaced in recent months, but veteran games journalist Chris Morris has filtered through them to provide a realistic take on what Microsoft should and shouldn't do with Xbox 360's successor. In particular, he notes that Microsoft should adopt the Blu-ray format from Sony. 'A DVD drive as a medium for storing larger and larger games is outdated – and it steps on the toes of a system that bills itself as the high definition leader,' Morris writes. 'Microsoft resisted the move to Blu-ray this generation without any ill effects. It even survived picking the losing side in the format battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, but it can't rely on the DVD to take it into the next generation.'

Twisted Pixel has officially raised the curtain on the latest Gunstringer DLC, first announced via Major Nelson yesterday. The "Real Big Shootin'" DLC pits players against 'Mad Dog' McDog "who is out to slander your good name as the quickest draw in the west." What that boils down to, apparently, is four acts of gameplay more akin to a midway shooting gallery than the narrative found in the main game.
Real Big Shootin' will be released on Xbox Live tomorrow for 240 Microsoft Points ($3).

Major Nelson has dropped yet another Xbox Live knowledge bomb, this time revealing upcoming Xbox Live Arcade titles, the latest Deal of the Week promotion and more. In addition to Joe Danger and a heaping helping of DLC, Xbox Live Arcade will receive Sonic CD this week, with the Blue Blur clocking in at a mere five bucks. Also, in a surprising twist, Sonic CD will include both the Japanese and American soundtracks, meaning "" will indeed be heard by a new generation. Meanwhile, Trine 2 will make its XBLA debut on December 21 for $15.
Moving on to Deal of the Week, this week covers "Japan's Finest," offering Hard Corps: Uprising and Radiant Silvergun at $7.50 each, while Bangai-O HD: Missile Fury and Guwange can be had for $5 apiece. Next week's deal will see the Rock of Ages price chipped down to a very reasonable $5, providing an excellent method for settling any family arguments during Christmas dinner.

It's only available to those in the Xbox Live preview program at the moment, but you can officially add the Xbox 360 to the list of platforms that offer access to YouTube videos. Beta participants should be now able to download the app from the console's new Apps Marketplace, and find all the usual personalized features you'd expect from YouTube, plus the Kinect controls you'd expect from an Xbox app. Still no word about a roll-out to everyone else, nor is there any word on a firm release date for all those other new video services slated to hit the console (they're still just promised for "later in December").

In addition to Joe Danger's Xbox Live Arcade debut, this Wednesday will host a handful of new DLC for several titles, Major Nelson reveals. Alongside the previously revealed "Vengeance and Virtue" DLC for Pinball FX2 ($10) and the"Lost Adventures" DLC for Orcs Must Die! ($4), we also have some heretofore unknown DLC for The Gunstringer, Fruit Ninja Kinect and Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012.
For $3 each, The Gunstringer will receive "Real Big Shootin'" DLC, while Magicwill be dealt its second expansion. Meanwhile, Fruit Ninja Kinect players can grab the Holiday Pack for free. We don't have details on any of the DLC, though we're really hoping the Fruit Ninja Holiday DLC includes sliceable fruitcakes.

With Fez wrapped up and heading to Xbox Live Arcade, Polytron Corporation head Phil Fish is already discussing the studio's next project. Speaking toGamasutra, Fish revealed that its collaboration with Kokoromi, Super Hypercube is now in development for Kinect. Super Hypercube is a puzzle game which tasks players with manipulating 3D objects and slotting them into differently shaped holes. Originally created to utilize head tracking with a Wii Remote, the game has since transitioned to Kinect. The game was a finalist at IndieCade earlier this year, with Fish noting that Microsoft "seemed interested" in the title.
To learn a little more about the project, we spoke with Fish, who tells us that Polytron and Kokoromi "went back to the drawing board" with the Super Hypercube, essentially rebooting development. "It has slightly different gameplay and art style, but basically it works the same way," says Fish, "You move your head, it moves the camera." Beyond that, Fish stresses that the project is "a bit early," so it may be some time before we hear much more.
You can learn more about the original Super Hypercube design (and even download the game) from the Polytron website.

XBLA game Alan Wake's American Nightmare has been officially revealed.
The game is not Alan Wake 2, says developer Remedy. Although, it does follow-on directly from the end of the last game. So it pretty much is Alan Wake 2.
It is an Xbox Live Arcade title, so misses retail this time around. The original Alan Wake performed ok at retail, but wasn't a spectacular success.
The new title is due to arrive in Q1 2012.

Codemasters is releasing a new boxed destruction-based entry in its popular Dirt driving franchise in May 2012, titled Dirt Showdown.
The spin-off game mixes the arcade-style extreme sports elements of Dirt 2, the ‘Gymkhana’ stunt events from Dirt 3 and adds in some Destruction Derby-style action, according to GameSpot.
It features eight-player multiplayer, wackier cars, a range of locations from London to San Francisco and in-game ‘Destruction’ arenas.
Dirt Showdown will be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in May. Codemasters tells MCV the title is a spin-off extension in the Dirt series, not Dirt 4 or a sequel to Dirt 3.

Microsoft is actively seeking a television executive to develop original content for Xbox Live, Bloomberg reports.
According to "people with knowledge of the company's plans," the process is being led by Stratis LLC partner Tom Schneider, and Microsoft is only willing to make the hire if a suitable candidate is found.
So far, two people have been approached about the role: former NBC Universal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin, who stepped down after Comcast took control of NBC in January; and NBC's current head of west coast business operations Marc Graboff, who announced his plans to leave the company last month.
However, the sources claim that the position may not be created if the right candidate is not found.
While Microsoft has declined to comment on the rumour, it would be consistent with the company's longstanding ambitions for the Xbox to become a multimedia platform - highlighted by the recentdashboard update, which introduced a number of new video content providers and changed the UI to shift emphasis away from games.
In addition, a forthcoming wave of Kinect content includes Kinect Sesame Street TV, which blends gaming experiences with episodes from the iconic show's new season.
Pixar, Double Fine and National Geographic are also producing Kinect content that borrows aspects from television.

Blockbuster beats Avatar to become fastest entertainment product to reach the milestone
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has smashed through the $1 billion barrier just 16 days after release, Activision has revealed.
The feat makes it the fastest entertainment property ever to reach the milestone, beating the blockbuster movie Avatar’s 17 day record.
“Engagement of our Call of Duty audience continues to rise around the world,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick.
"Call of Duty as an entertainment franchise has made an indelible mark on popular culture and its broad and continued success is further validation that audiences increasingly value interactive experiences over passive experiences.”
The latest release in the franchise had previously broken the record for most pre-orders ever, and generated $775 million within the first five days of sale.

After a "slight" delay, Microsoft has begun rolling out across all regions the final production version of its Xbox 360 Fall 2011 Dash Update - 2.0.14699.0 - remaining unchanged in number from the last Preview Program version released a few days ago. As usual with SystemUpdates, you are recommended to hold-off on updating until c4eva and the team have had a chance to properly analyze it, generate and check a set of LIVE logs, and report back on whether there are any changes affecting c4eva’s firmwares. The version being unchanged from the last beta should help expedite this process, however.

Those that have fitted a CoolRunner to an Xbox Slim will be no stranger to the fact that it can take a great deal of trial and error to get the optimized boot times down to less than 5 seconds.
The main issue is the CPU_RST wire which has to be up to 50cm long and then coiled underneath the motherboard. In many cases the positioning of the coil is a factor due to signal interference. Then you have to try different lengths, 40cm,
We believe we have developed a simple yet elegant solution for this problem.
Using the process of serpentining, we have designed a QSB PCB for the 360 slim that fits neatly into place, giving you an optimized solution enabling you to select several different lengths without having to cut any wires and eliminates any guess work and possible signal interference issues.
Since the CoolRunner has been out in the wild, we have collected data from hundreds of testers and implemented the optimum lengths that were reported as giving the most consistently good results.
Simply cut the blue CPU_RST wire to 8cm and then you can select from 50cm, 47cm, 41cm, 38cn, 35cm, 32cm & 29cm.
We have also included all the POST points for the developers out there who wish to use that part of NANDPRO 3 that was implemented by Tiros.
To give you an idea of how the serpentining is used, I've adjusted some values in photoshop so you can get a better idea

Xamphear released a new version of 360 Content Manager for JTAG & RGH 360s:
[QUOTE]
What This App Does:
* Browse 360 files on your PC by their real info, like game name and package title.
* Upload files (XBLA, DLC, GOD, Avatar, Title Update) to your console over FTP with a single click. Files are automatically uploaded to the right folders.
* Drag and drop files to other applications, if you'd prefer to use your own FTP client.
* Organize a messy folder of downloaded content into 1 of many different directory styles. Restore the original filenames for XBLA and DLC files.
* View the MediaID of Title Updates and GODs so you can match them, and search JQE and XBUC for matching TUs.
* View the MediaID of ISO files. (Requires abgx360)
* View the MediaID of default.xex files.
Advanced/Beta Features:
* Scan the Content folder on your 360's HDD to a database so that while browsing content on your PC you can see if it's already on your 360 or not, even if your 360 is off.
* Browse the contents of your 360 directly, using Freestyle Dashboard's SMB share technology.
What's new/fixed:
* Reads and displays actual Title Update version number, which is helpful since Microsoft has stopped making it part of the package title. "New" style TUs (ie: tu0000004_00000000) can be renamed using the content organizer, since the number in the filename is largely meaningless.

After a lot of work, xeBuild brings together ggbuild (RGH) and fbbuild (JTAG) into a single application for building glitch, jtag and clean retail images with support for the new 14699 dash:
[QUOTE]
What's New:
* builds jtag/glitch/retail images
* image type specifyer changed, specify -t on command line
* all ini options are now available on the command line (no spaces allowed!)
-patch append option, -o [patchname] via command line, see NOMU/NOFCRT below or about_patches.S for further info. Up to 16 files can be specified.
* NOMU and NOFCRT patches are provided as optional patches, please use the
-a flag on the command line (ie: -a nomu and/or -a nofcrt) if you want to use them, nomu disables jasper NAND memory unit, nofcrt will attempt to disable FCRT file (not needed if yours isn't corrupt)
-nonandmu has been changed to nandmu so it's behavior is inverted
* virtual fuses is no longer being pursued for glitch images as correct cpu key is already required to build working trinity images. They remain for JTAG images.
Current Limitations:
- STAY THE HELL OFF LIVE! Nuff said, we're not you're mum.
1.00
- hotfix - jtag images were being created with incorrect patch file number (xexp1 instead of xexp2)
1.00
- gets security files from nanddump.bin and verifies them (odd.bin is currently not processed)
- option added to disable extracting security files from nanddump.bin
- decrypts perbuild security files for verification (crl/dae only currently, updater files work too)
- zero nonce data in bls before checking crc (inlcuded file lists updated with new crc and explanation)
- fixed a bug with mobile extraction
- fixed a bug with fsroot processing
- (glitch) dynamic SMC patcher, no longer limited to hard coded hash/offsets
- added more SMC hashes to verify known clean SMCs
- will attempt to decrypt external encrypted smc.bin if needed
- whitelist more chars in the file list parser
- altered so that pairing value will be retreived from nanddump.bin even if ldv is set in ini
- dual CB is dictated by ini, "none" filename indicates single CB (jtag does not use dual CB)
- increased logged info when adding files to flashfs
- odd.bin in encrypted (only!) form is now handled (from file or nanddump.bin)
- ini options are now available as -o options on command line
- added -t command line flag for glitch/retail/jtag selection
- JTAG image creation merged
- separate retail/glitch/jtag into individual per-firmware ini lists
- added -noenter command line option to suppres application asking to press enter on completion
- added proper errorlevel exiting, 1=usage/commandline error, 2=file write err, 3=image build error
- add 'cygnos' and 'xellbutton' options for glitch images with appropriate bl patches (either may affect fat glitch boot rate!)
- non-critical spare data fix to the way smc config is added to image
- update freeboot core and glitch base patches to accept a secondary xell poweron reason
- rewrote extended.bin handler, given an invalid/undecryptable file it will create a empty extended.bin
- rewrote keyvault handler, can decrypt and verify kv.bin when it's provided encrypted
- added patch append -a command, and converted nomu and nofcrt to optional patches
- added simple explanation of patch file formats in about_patches.S
- changed nonandmu option to nandmu so it can default to false
- added corona and winchester console types, currently not supported but there if needed
- add 14699

'Batman: Arkham World' was teased at the VGA Awards last night.
The title was teased in an animation of the Joker accepting his Best Character Award."I guess I won't be needing this anymore," says Joker, holding up and then tossing a script for 'Batman: Arkham World' in the bin. "Oops, spoilers!" he adds.
We assume it was nothing but a cruel joke from developer Rocksteady - not to mention the title doesn't make sense because Arkham is a city, not a 'world' - so don't go getting all excited, but it was enough to raise an eyebrow.
