More people are using TV and other entertainment services on Xbox 360 than ever before.
Microsoft has announced that the number of people using entertainment apps on Xbox Live increased by nearly 50 per cent worldwide from November to December.
Video has proven to be one of the most popular forms of entertainment on the service. The hours of video consumed globally in 2011 increased year-on-year by almost 140 per cent.
In December, more than 60 per cent of US 360 owners used these apps for an average of one hour every day.
Last month, Microsoft launched new TV content on Xbox Live, including Channel 4OD and 5 On Demand. Microsoft has now secured more than 50 active and announced TV partnerships worldwide, and hints that there is more to come.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will be released in the UK for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 25, publisher Ubisoft has announced.
The news means a further delay to a game that was originally intended for release in late 2010. In October, Ubisoft pinned down arelease date of March 6; a beta planned for January will now launch in April. The delays aren't over yet, though - the PC version will follow "at a later date."
Adrian Lacey, IP development director at Ubisoft Studios France, said: "Ubisoft prides itself on creating some of the most compelling and innovative experiences in digital entertainment. Today we are feature-complete in our MP, singleplayer and fourplayer co-op campaign modes.
"We have taken the decision to move the date in order to ensure that all these ingredients are pushed to the highest level and provide a truly unique shooter experience."

January 10th, 2012, 01:42 Posted By: wraggster
Last month's Digital Foundry article on the shortcomings of the Xbox 360's new, so-called "Metro" dashboard highlighted a bug that saw video playback washed out, emphasising compression artifacts and lowering image quality compared to the previous, perfectly serviceable video player. We also revealed that Microsoft appeared to be ignoring the feedback of its beta testers to the point of deleting reports of the issue, causing dismay from those who put their time and effort into road-testing the new update. For reasons we'll go into later, media is primed to be a new battleground for games consoles going forward and it's no mistake that "Metro" pushes video playback as a key element. The rise of Netflix in the US has helped to define games consoles as a convenient means to stream from a massive catalogue of TV shows and movies offered by a growing range of suppliers. Support (of sorts) for the Bing search engine and YouTube also illustrates how the future focuses on accessing the internet via the TV. In effect "Metro" is positioning the Xbox 360 as a competitor against the next generation of Smart TVs we can expect to see appear this year, and, via its new Video Marketplace apps, as a one-stop shop for video content on demand. It is a shame that such an important update for Microsoft should prove to have some very serious issues - problems that go beyond the previously reported washed-out video. It's safe to say that our initial blog caused quite a reaction, not least from other beta testers who asked us to investigate a range of issues, such as borked colour levels in gameplay and the removal of 1080p playback from the dashboard. The good news is that - as far as we have been able to discern - gameplay is unaffected by the new update, despite many reports to the contrary. We ran the Modern Warfare 3 brightness calibration tool on 360 consoles running dashboards old and new and found that the RGB levels were essentially identical when running on the same settings.Unfortunately, reports that the dashboard video player's 1080p mode has been nerfed appear to be on the money. Video calibration tools put together by the AVSForumdemonstrate conclusively that, while the Xbox 360 has no problem whatsoever decoding 1080p video, it is no longer being rendered in native resolution. To illustrate the issues, here we see the same full HD video being run on an older NXE dash at 1080p, and the new Metro offering at both 720p and 1080p. As you can see when clicking on the thumbnails, just about all the detail is being resolved on the older front end, but the Metro dash's 720p and 1080p images are effectively identical in terms of core resolution.

In the current rash of Xbox Live hacking stories, Susan Taylor's might be the most interesting. Like many Xbox Live users in recent months, Taylor one day found that her Xbox Live account had been hijacked, and hundreds of dollars in Microsoft Points and Xbox Live subscriptions had been purchased, draining money directly from her linked bank account. And, like many others, the following days were consumed by calls with Microsoft support, attempting to get her stolen money returned and her Xbox Live account safely reinstated.
Her story has many other wrinkles, including a second massive purchase, despite Microsoft's word that her account had been locked, and her own detective work into discovering exactly who had stolen her account and why. Suffice it to say that Taylor's story has a happy ending -- no doubt thanks to a hefty amount of public exposure -- though it certainly wasn't an easy process.
Inspired by her experiences, Taylor has founded HackedOnXbox.com, on which her story is recounted and others are invited to share their own. We fully suggest you read Taylor's account of events, and don't forget that Joystiq is still investigating the issue as well. Be sure to contact us if you have any information.

What if you combined a prototype Windows 8 tablet, an electric skateboard and Microsoft's Kinect? Funnily enough, the folks at Chaotic Moon Studios wondered the same, and they didn't stop there. Here at CES 2012, the outfit showcased a downright amazing wheeled machine, capable of reaching speeds as high as 32mph. It's being labeled the Board of Awesomeness, but frankly, that's an understatement. The company's calling this the world's first Xbox Kinect-controlled skateboard, utilizing video recognition, speech recognition, gesture recognition, localization data, accelerometer data, and other factors to determine what the user wants to do. Enough chatter -- head on past the break to see this thing in action.

Electronic Arts has issued an action claiming First Amendment protection for its use of real-world military helicopters in Battlefield 3.
According to legal documents obtained by Kotaku, EA was contacted on December 21, 2011 by lawyers representing Textron, a US conglomerate that owns the military hardware company Bell Helicopter.
Textron demanded that three models depicting Bell aircraft be removed from Battlefield 3. However, after failing to reach an understanding privately, EA submitted an action to the federal court of Northern California last Friday.
The document states that, "the parties have been unable to resolve their dispute. EA therefore has a reasonable and strong apprehension that it will soon face a trademark and/or trade dress action from Textron."
EA believes that its use of the AH-1Z Viper, UH-1Y and V-22 Osprey helicopters is, "protected by the First Amendment and the doctrine of nominative fair use," and notes that, "the Bell-manufactured helicopters are not highlighted or given greater prominence than any of the other vehicles within the game."
"The Bell-manufactured helicopters depicted in Battlefield 3 are just a few of countless creative visual, audio, plot and programming elements that make up EA's expressive work, a first-person military combat simulation."
EA's claim is strengthened by June 2011's landmark ruling that gave games the same First Amendment rights as film and literature. The US Supreme Court voted 7-2 against a motion to reinstate a law concerning the sale of violent video games to minors, and introduced new labelling laws and punitive fines for retailers.
Since then, a lawsuit between EA and Rutgers University over the use of quarterback Ryan Hart's likeness was dismissed after a judge ruled that EA's First Amendment rights outweighed Hart's rights to control his own image.
"Millions of dollars are being made, and he's not getting his part of that pot," Hart's lawyer, Tim McIlwain, said at the time. "How is this allowed to happen?"

A report from consumer site Gamespot claims to have word that the new Xbox, which will be revealed at this year’s E3, will include some sort of portable tablet component.
“Given Microsoft's recent efforts at unification across its Windows, Mobile, and Xbox product lines, it seems clear that the 720 or whatever they end up calling it will be the ultimate personification of that strategy,” it says.
“There are strong signs suggesting that, like with Nintendo's Wii U, a tablet component figures heavily into the new design.”
It goes on to speculate that the new machine will include a tablet PC, base station, a controller and some form of Kinect.
If true, the move would represent a remarkable change of direction for the games industry and, perhaps more importantly, a form of validation for Nintendo’s daring Wii U design.
And of course, with Nintendo’s Wii U seemingly quite limited in scope thanks to the need to remain near the base station at all times, the opportunity is there for Microsoft to evolve the idea further.

“There has been no breach to the security of our Xbox Live service.”
That’s the simple message from Microsoft today in response to fresh claims last week about security problems with its online content network.
And, as it did last year in response to a story in UK newspaper The Sun, the platform holder has once again insisted that users who have had their accounts compromised are victims of a phishing scam.
“Microsoft can confirm that there has been no breach to the security of our Xbox Live service,” a new statement reads. “In recent cases, some Xbox Live members appear to have been victims of malicious scams. Unfortunately this is something that affects many internet based services.
“The online safety of Xbox Live members remains of the utmost importance, which is why we consistently take measures to protect Xbox Live against ever-changing threats.”
As for last week’s Tumble user – Microsoft has quickly moved to reinstate her account, no doubt thanks to the widespread media coverage the case was getting.
“However, we are aware that a handful of customers have experienced problems getting their accounts restored once they’ve reported an issue,” it added.
“We are working directly with those customers to restore their accounts as soon as possible and are reviewing our processes to ensure a positive customer support experience.”
“While we do not ordinarily comment on specific cases, Microsoft can confirm that the account in question has been reinstated to its rightful owner and all unauthorized charges are being refunded in full.”
As for the blogger in question, she admits that she’s finally happy with the treatment she’s received, but rightly adds that it shouldn’t have taken international media coverage to obtain it.
“I do not want to sit here and say I am unhappy with the results. I’m not, I have access to my money again and I no longer have to worry about feeding my boy,” she admitted. “What has frustrated me is how I have been treated throughout all of this.
“At first I was given the run around, then I was lied to, then I was passed on from person to person and the ONLY reason why I am sitting here with a completed grocery list next to me is because I made a big ol’ fuss. I set out to get your attention, to get people talking, to force Microsoft to ignore me no more. I succeeded, but what about the numerous (read: 100+) people who have sent me emails telling me their stories?”

Swizzy released Dashlaunch Temp Monitor v1.0:
[QUOTE]
Overview - What it does
- It'll read the temperature data that dashlaunch broadcasts and convert it to something you can read (in Celcius)
- It'll show you the temperatures in real-time as well as log them for you (you'll need to manually save the log, it doesn't do that on it's own)
- It'll Color code the temperatures that are displayed as current/last read
** the temperatures are configurable with; green beeing below good temps which are labeld as "low", orange beeing in between low/high and red if the temperature is higher then the specified value **
- It'll save your settings in %appdata%/Swizzy/dashlaunchtempmon.ini if you want to manually edit something, or just simply delete them to use defaults
*update* v1.1 - what's new/fixed:
- Removed: Option to display raw data in the log, it's not really needed for end-users, if you are a dev and want to see the raw data, go right ahead and download the source, uncomment the blob of code that handles this and you'll have all of it right there infront of you in a flash!
- Added: Support for reading Path/PEname data from dashlaunch 2.29 output
NOTE: it'll still support the data output of 2.28 just the same, difference is that it now also reads the extra data that is within version 2.29
- Fixed: Optimized the app ALOT, it no longer use a shitload of your cpu it now use around 1-3% of your CPU
- Added: Translation for all devices that are currently available, so it's easier for you to see/understand where the game/app is run from in the log later on and also what is actually running (NOTE: this is not a flawless identification so
it may still be a bit cryptic to know what was running...)
- Added: Counter for how many readings are in the log
- Added: Option to automaticly flush the log to temps.log every time the counter reaches the set value you've specified, this makes the log window cleaner and lets you keep logging for a very long time and then check back to see how the temperatures changed without your computer going berserk on you because your memory is packed with a shitload of data from my app
- Fixed: when opening the prog without the log then enabling it, the window would keep the log hidden, now it resize the window properly, otherwise it saves the window size when you hide the log and put's it back into that size when you want to show it again
- Added: Last minute change adding Title/Media ID output aswell, along with an option to enable/disable this output in the log (it's on a seperate line to make it easier to find )

It has come to our attention that a small factory in China is making cheap, low quality copies of the hugely successful Xecuter CoolRunner & Xecuter Unlocked Replacement DG-16D4S PCB. They do say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, however these came through our retail channels due to a high number of faulty returns and there were attempts at having them replaced on the official Xecuter Warranty. Not only are they poor quality, but they are wholesaling them for the same cost at what we are wholesaling the genuine products to our wholesale network, so it’s pointless buying them in the first place.
If you are looking to buy genuine Xecuter products through wholesale channels then simply contact Supreme Factory or China Distribution and they will take care of you. If you are looking for genuine Xecuter retailers then they are listed on our Official Resellers Page. If you suspect that an official reseller has sold you a fake Xecuter product please get in touch with us immediately.
Remember that when you buy fake copies, even though you are paying the same price as the genuine product you will get no support, and no warranty. Here are some comparison photographs to see if you have a fake or genuine CoolRunner / Unlocked Replacement PCB.
With the CoolRunner you can see that half the components used are not the same brand as the original and the print quality is shoddy at best. They have also shaved off the corner dot on the main IC.
With the Unlocked Replacement DG-16D4S PCB there are far too many mistakes and errors to even know where to begin. Luckily its super easy to spot the fake.

A new version of abgx360 has been released.
What's new/fixed (all platforms):
- XGD3 support.
- Replaced AP25 replay sector support with support for topology data (for consoles which do AP25 checks -- make sure you have LT+ v3.0 or later).
- Added "Min Kernel Required" (to boot the game) when checking an XEX.
- Added improvements to AutoUpload (used by uploaders) including extended C/R for SS (using the original disc) to make sure files uploaded to the database have very accurate angle measurements.
- Added optional command line argument "--speed" for setting drive speed when checking a burned DVD. Example: "--speed 12" will attempt to set the drive speed to 12x. You can try to set any speed you like, but setting a speed higher than what your media supports may cause read errors if the drive's firmware doesn't govern it. "--speed 0" will set the drive's default speed.
- Added optional command line argument "--showsstable" for when you want to see the SS C/R data but you still prefer medium or low verbosity. The SS C/R table has also been updated with "Mod?" being split into "Tol" (response tolerance) for the CCRT entry and "Mod" (response modifier) for the drive entry, also "Pad?" has been renamed to "Typ" (type). Thanks Redline99!
- Added vendor specific additional info and bus type when displaying optical drive names (bus type displayed on Windows only).
- Updated the list of optical drive sense code errors.
- Updated the game ratings definitions.
- Fixed a bug which negated the ability to recover from a write error when rebuilding an ISO using the low disk space method. It's unlikely that a write error would be recovered on subsequent retries, but at least now it will write the data in the correct place if it does recover.
- Fixed a bug which caused "Unknown Media: 0x00000000" to be displayed if the "Secure Virtual Optical Device" media flag was set and the "XGD2 Media Only" image flag was not set (The "XGD2 Media Only" flag has also been renamed to "Original Media Only" in abgx360 since they are using the same flag for XGD3).
- The archaic caution message about angle 359 was removed, but you are still able to "fix" it if you still have iXtreme < v1.4 (really old and not suitable for XBL anyway).
- Ability to "extract entire video partition (253 MB)" was removed; this doesn't make sense for XGD3 and isn't even very useful for XGD2 since it was just including a bunch of padding data that isn't even part of the real video partition... it was only needed for very old methods of concatenating with stealth files and a game partition to make a working backup.
Note: The way video is checked/fixed is now a little different for both XGD2 and XGD3. The previous way was to check/fix both L0 video and L1 video off of L0, and then to check/fix "SplitVid" (L1 video on L1) afterwards by comparing it to L1 video on L0. Since XGD3 has no room for L1 video on L0, and to keep things consistent, video will now always be checked/fixed according to L0 on L0 and L1 on L1, and the "SplitVid" check is now gone (nominally). The only effective difference is that L1 video on L0 is no longer checked, but this is not a problem... it's not even supposed to be there and it's not visible to the host console when using a "safe" custom firmware. You can rest assured that only old and unsafe custom firmwares will read L1 video from L0; newer ones will read it properly from L1 (this is necessary in order to replicate the read/seek performance of an original disc).
There is also a big annoying yellow message if you have "Check/Fix Video padding" enabled and you check an XGD2 game with L1 video on L0 (or any data in that area). To make the message go away you will need to either add command line option "--pL0" to confirm that you want to blank it out (XGD2 ISOs without L1 video on L0 will appear to have bad video data when checked with older versions of abgx360), or you can simply disable "Check/Fix Video padding", as it still makes no difference in terms of stealth... this option only exists as a way to make sure ISOs are "clean", with no extra data in areas that aren't CRC checked. Note that this version of abgx360 doesn't care about L1 video on L0... it will pad L0 video with zeroes whenever video is autofixed or manually patched.
Sorry if the command line options are annoying (you can add them under the "Misc" tab of the GUI), but you can be sure that an improved v1.1.0 GUI is in the works...
Note: The GUI has not been changed and will still display version 1.0.2, don't worry about it as long as the CLI app displays v1.0.6

Welcome to 2012! We’re eager to see what our developers have in store for Xbox LIVE Indie Games in the coming year and to kick things off we have an exciting announcement regarding some changes to App Hub that make it a good time to be an Xbox LIVE Indie Games developer.
* Higher maximum CCGAME size
Since the start of Xbox LIVE Indie Games, CCGAME bundles submitted for Xbox LIVE Indie Games were limited to a maximum size of 150MB. We’ve heard all the great feedback on this subject and today we are pleased to inform you that developers are now able to submit CCGAME bundles up to 500MB through App Hub for publishing on Xbox LIVE Indie Games.
* New limit for 80 point games
Another area we’re adjusting today is the requirement that titles larger than 50MB be priced at either 240 or 400 points. After raising our maximum size we’ve decided to also raise this limit. Starting today you can apply the 80 point price to any game with a CCGAME size under 150MB, which is three times the current limit of 50MB.
* More titles per developer
The last change affects a fewer number of developers, but we still believe it’s an important update. Originally developers were limited to just eight titles on Xbox LIVE Indie Games. When Creators Club became App Hub, we raised the limit up to ten. We’re happy today to let you know that we’re again raising this limit up to twenty titles per developer.
We’re continuing to watch our developer base and adapt the system to the needs of our creators. We hope you’re all as excited as we are to kick off 2012 with these great updates to the App Hub to enable our developers to make even better content for Xbox LIVE Indie Games. If you have any questions or want to discuss these changes, feel free to post in our forum thread.

An Xbox Live user whose account was compromised and used to purchase thousands of Microsoft Points has identified the hacker involved, and discovered websites where accounts are up for sale.
In a lengthy post on Tumblr, the user explains that her account was compromised not once, but twice, despite Microsoft having insisted the account had been locked. When she queried this with Microsoft she was told: "The fraud department was unable to block your account."
Microsoft issued a 30-day Xbox Live Gold code to use on a separate account while the compromised account was investigated, which the company explained would take between three and six weeks. When the user switched on her Xbox 360 to set up the new account she found she was automatically signed in to her existing account; despite it having been compromised twice, Microsoft was still yet to block it.
There was a new user on her friends list, and over a series of messages she ascertained that her account had been sold on a website called Tradetang. At the time of writing the site has 1,916 listings in the "Wholesale Virtual Products" category, the vast majority of which are Xbox Live accounts with large numbers of points attached. One such account comes with 6000 MSP and costs just $20.43; most come with a warranty of just two hours, presumably due to the risk that Microsoft is notified of the breach and promptly locks down the account.
There's no way of knowing for sure if this is the root cause of the recent FIFA hacks - which has seen swathes of Xbox Live users having their accounts compromised, with large amounts of Microsoft Points added using stored credit card data and subsequently spent on virtual goods in FIFA Ultimate Team - and we're still no closer to finding out how accounts are compromised in the first place. It does, however, shed a little light on the hackers' methodology once an account has been stolen.
The first order of business is to recover the stolen account and use stored credit card data to buy an Xbox Live Family Pack, which allows for several accounts to be linked between which Microsoft Points balances can be transferred. Then large amounts of Microsoft Points are purchased and transferred to the thief's normal account; the thief then creates several free Xbox Live accounts, divides the stolen points between them, and sells them on individually.
We're getting closer to understanding why hackers are targeting Xbox Live accounts, but no closer to working out how they're doing it. Microsoft has continually denied that it is a problem with Xbox Live security, and instead implied that users are being hoodwinked into giving up their details through phishing or social engineering. That hasn't rung true from the start, and still doesn't. EA, too, hasflatly denied that the problem is caused by a weakness at their end.
