Gaming charity Child's Play asked the organiser of the Retake Mass Effect campaign to stop accepting donations because some of those that pledged thought they were helping fund development of a new ending to Mass Effect 3.
This morning we reported that the campaign organiser had closed the donation drive - which raised almost $80,000 - because Child's Play had expressed reservations about being seen as a supporter of calls for BioWare to revise Mass Effect 3's ending. According to Penny Arcade, the gaming website which runs Child's Play, its concerns ran much deeper than that.
In a post on Penny Arcade, Jerry "Tycho" Holkins explains that Child's Play project manager Jamie Dillion "has been buried under mail about this situation. Apparently some of the people giving to the cause seemed to think that they were paying for a new ending to Mass Effect.
"She's been asked what the goal is, and how much they need to raise in order to get the ending produced. We've also been contacted by PayPal due to a high number of people asking for their donations back.
"This is in addition to readers who simply couldn't understand how this was connected to Child's Play's mission. We were dealing with a lot of very confused people, more every day, and that told us we had a problem."
It's compelled the charity to draft a new policy - "Child's Play cannot be a tool to draw attention to a cause; Child's Play must be the cause" - to avoid similar things happening in future.
Happily for the slow of wit who thought they were giving a poor indie studio a leg up to help it make a better game, BioWare founder Dr Ray Muzyka has confirmed the the Mass Effect team is "hard at work on a number of game content initiatives" that he believes will address fan dissatisfaction. Development will be funded through the studio's own, and publisher EA's, considerable financial means.

US shop GameStop has poured cold water on the rumour that the next Xbox will include anti-used game technology. In January Kotaku reported that its sources said Microsoft's next home console would use Blu-ray discs and that Microsoft was planning on including technology that would somehow combat used games, though didn't provide specifics on exactly how that would work.Today, in an investor call, GameStop executives said such a move is "unlikely"."We think it's unlikely that there would be that next-gen console because the model simply hasn't been proven to work," Paul Raines, GameStop CEO, said. "Remember, used video games have a residual value. Remember GameStop generates $1.2 billion of trade credits around the world with our used game model. So, consider taking used games out of that, you'd have to find new ways to sell the games."And, our partners are good partners. The console companies have great relationships with us."GameStop pointed out that the majority of the $1.2 billion of credit it generated went back into purchasing a video game. For many gamers, the shop said, this made buying games more affordable. It also said its highest market position is with Microsoft and Xbox 360 software. The shop talks to the first party almost "every day"."This is the kind of news that gets out in the industry and gets people worked up and hyper-ventilating and excited," Raines added."The pre-owned business is not a cannibalistic business. If you follow the popular conventional wisdom, you would think pre-owned is replacing new. The truth is, pre-owned is an opening price-point category. The average price is $18. A lot of it is old generation. What is is is a category for the customer who's maybe not ready to invest in a new game, but wants to get into the console business and console entertainment."What we've done is create a way for that new leading edge consumer to dispose of their old games, and that's what creates this great circle of life we talk about that so many try to imitate. That's how we see it."

The "crews" Max Payne 3 players form in mulitplayer mode will transfer directly to Grand Theft Auto V multi, Rockstar co-founder and fancy mansion owner Dan Houser told IGN. Grand Theft Auto V will share Max Payne 3's crews via Rockstar's Social Club.
"Multiplayer is an ever-more important part of all our games moving forward," Houser said. "And by creating crews through Social Club, the crews that you create in Max Payne 3 will be ready and available for you to play in Grand Theft Auto V from day one."
After news of this crossover, we can imagine other Social Club integration possibilities -- Red Dead Redemption would have majestic horses galloping through the glittery streets of Los Santos, dodging bullets and rampaging cars alike. Horses; horses everywhere.

Upon the release of the Kinect, Microsoft showed off its golden child as the beginnings of a revolution in user interface technology. The skeleton and motion detection promised a futuristic, hand-waving “Minority Report-style” interface where your entire body controls a computer. The expectations haven’t exactly lived up reality, but [Steve], along with his coworkers at Amulet Devices have vastly improved the Kinect’s skeleton recognition so people can use a Kinect sitting down.
One huge drawback for using the Kinect for a Minority Report UI in a home theater is the fact that the Microsoft Skeleton recognition doesn’t work well when sitting down. Instead of relying on the built-in skeleton recognition that comes with the Kinect, [Steve] rolled his own skeleton detection using Harr classifiers.
Detecting Harr-like features has been used in many applications of computer vision technology; it’s a great, not-very-computationally-intensive way to detect faces and body positions with a simple camera. Training is required for the software, and [Steve]‘s app spent several days programming itself. The results were worth it, though: the Kinect now recognizes [Steve] waving his arm while he is lying down on the couch.
Not to outdo himself, [Steve] also threw in voice recognition to his Kinect home theater controller; a fitting addition as his employer makes a voice recognition remote control. The recognition software seems to work very well, even with the wistful Scottish accent [Steve] has honed over a lifetime.
[Steve]‘s employer is giving away their improved Kinect software that works for both the Xbox and Windows Kinects. If you’re ever going to do something with a Kinect that isn’t provided with the SDKs and APIs we covered earlier today, this will surely be an invaluable resource.
You can check out [Steve]‘s demo of the new Kinect software after the break.

Veteran journalist Chris Morris explains what a no-show for the next Xbox at E3 means
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]E&D Emerging Markets
www.microsoft.com/uk/games
The following is a guest post from veteran games journalist Chris Morris
With Microsoft's announcement that it has no plans to even mention its next generation console system at this year's E3, the annual video game trade show has gotten a bit less interesting.
It is, in some ways, a confusing decision. While no one expected the next Xbox to come out this year, publishers traditionally begin beating the drum for new systems about 18 months out - and there's no indication Microsoft has pushed the system to 2014. Also, with the company talking to developers now, the specs for the device have leaked out faster than water through a colander.
But there is some logic in keeping the new system close to the vest. And the decision could have a ripple effect on the rest of the industry.
Here are a few reasons Microsoft likely decided to keep Durango under wraps at E3 this year - and what that decision might mean for other players.
[h=2]Why scuttle Xbox Next talk?[/h]The games aren't ready - While everyone knew the next Xbox was in the works, Microsoft didn't start its road show for the new system until early this year. That's when developers got their first look at what was underneath the hood of Durango and what it could do.
While work may have been underway preliminarily at that point on launch titles for the next generation, teams haven't had much time to prepare them for the final (or near final) specs. And given how much competition has increased in the gaming space in the last few years, the new consoles are going to have to wow people right out of the gate. To ensure that happens, Microsoft knows it's better to wait until the games are closer to being done.
Why shoot yourself in the foot? - The Xbox 360 is still a powerful force at retail. While the Wii was already starting to flounder when Nintendo announced the Wii U, Microsoft doesn't face the same sort of pressure to please investors.

Microsoft has announced Arcade Next, a four-week run of Xbox Live Arcade releases published by Microsoft Studios beginning next month.
First up is Trials Evolution, Finnish studio RedLynx's Trials HDfollowup with a heavy emphasis on user-generated content, with players using the same track editor its designers used. It arrives on April 18, for 1200 Microsoft Points.
The following Wednesday it's Bloodforge, a brutal hack-and-slasher from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories developer Climax, costing 1200 MSP. On May 2 another, decidedly cuter hack-and-slash title arrives in Lionhead's Fable Heroes, which supports fourplayer co-op and will cost 800 MSP.
Bringing the promotion to the close is arguably the biggest of the lot: 4J Studios' long-awaited XBLA port of Minecraft. Logically subtitled Xbox 360 Edition, it'll be released on May 9 for 1600 MSP.
Like all XBLA releases from April onwards, the above games will each have up to 30 Achievements, worth a total of 400 Gamerscore, to unlock.

Digital only Xbox thought to be wide of the mark
Doug Creutz, an analyst for Cowan & Company, thinks the next Xbox could launch in fall of 2013.
This is according to a research note reported byCVG, which goes against rumors that the Xbox 720 will be digital only.
"Although not yet confirmed by Microsoft, we believe the next generation Xbox console could launch in the fall of 2013," reads Creutzer's note.
"We believe a digital-only next-gen Xbox is unlikely given risks to both Microsoft's market share and the gaming ecosystem as a whole from any attempt to kill used games."
"However," he concludes, "we do believe that Microsoft may be targeting a cheaper physical solution in an effort to get the initial price of the box down and speed up new console adoption, which would be bullish for software publishers."

Bayonetta may not be getting a big sequel to her high-kicking 2010 debut just yet, but she will be making a cameo appearance in this year's Platinum Games console release, Anarchy Reigns. Famitsu has the exclusive reveal ofBayonetta's guest appearance in the game, alongside ... pretty much zero other news about her inclusion in the game.
Given the inclusion of MadWorld's Jack Cayman as a playable character, we're taking a wild guess that Bayonetta will take the same route. We've reached out to Sega in the meantime for more info.

PopCap Games has announced their popular casual puzzle title Zuma’s Revenge is to receive an updated and upgraded port for Xbox 360.
Available previously on PC, Mac, DS, and 3DS, PopCap boasts that the upcoming Xbox 360 version will include several improvements and some added content.
For instance, the port will carry high definition graphics, achievements, and cosmetic avatar rewards. It will also bring two new, exclusive game modes entitled Boss Rush and Weekly Challenge.
Additionally the company plans on tweaking things a bit with ‘updated 2012 gameplay’ that apparently removes lives, checkpoints, and the game over point.
No release date for the port has been mentioned thus far, but it has been confirmed that the title will go for 800 MS Points ($10) when it does arrive.

Media company's internet TV service will offer Sky content, launching this year
Sky will launch a new entertainment service, Now TV, for consoles and other devices later this year. The service will offer users a pay as you go business model for accessing films and television.
"We'll offer two distinctive ways to watch: the market-leading full Sky service for the whole family, complete with the widest range of channels, high quality products like Sky+, HD and Sky Go, and the peace of mind of a monthly bill; or the flexible, more spontaneous, pay-as-you-go service of NOW TV," said chief executive Jeremy Darroch.
Pricing options will range from a subscription based model to renting single films with a one off payment.
"It will be available on a wide range of devices and offer instant access to a range of high quality Sky content, with no install and no contract. Starting with movies, it will soon expand to offer sport and entertainment as well. And customers will be able to pay monthly or rent a movie on a simple, pay as you go basis."
Earlier this week Microsoft announced a deal to feature the BBC iPlayer on Xbox Live after significant delays.

Content Collection 1 for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is available for widespread consumption now on Xbox Live, after launching on March 13 for Elite members. Content Collection 1 includes four new multiplayer maps: Liberation, Piazza, Overwatch and Black Box, plus two Spec Ops missions, Black Ice and Negotiator.
Not "Black-ice negotiator," because it would be hilariously difficult to discuss anything of real import atop a slick of black ice, and MW3 is nothing but serious business.

PopCap Games has announced Zuma's Revenge, a sequel to itsZuma puzzler released for PC and Mac in 2009, for Xbox Live Arcade.
The original was first released all the way back in 2003, and the enhanced Zuma Deluxe launched on XBLA in 2005. Revenge adds two brand-new modes, including Boss Rush and Weekly Challenge, and its mechanics have been updated too: there are no lives, no checkpoints and no more game over screens.
Van Riker, Zuma franchise marketing manager, said: "With well over 20 million game units sold to date, and following the successful launch of four new Zuma titles this year on several leading mobile and handheld devices, the franchise has never been more in demand.
"The PopCap team has done an amazing job of enhancing the level of challenge, game features and customisations with this latest version of Zuma's Revenge, which we believe make it a must for Xbox players."
No firm release date was set, but Zuma's Revenge is due this summer, and will cost 800 Microsoft Points.

The BBC iPlayer is now available on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, some three years after the public broadcaster began negotiations to bring the video streaming service to the device.
It's been a long time coming but British Xbox 360 owners can now access the video-on-demand iPlayer service on their consoles. The Xbox 360 is the last console to gain iPlayer support with the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii already offering a version of the iPlayer.
Microsoft's requirement that video streaming services require an Xbox Live subscription was the deal breaker that stopped the iPlayer being made available on the console for so long.
"Given the BBC’s goal to reach its entire audience, I’m particularly excited that the BBC will be bringing iPlayer to all Xbox users at no extra cost as part of Xbox LIVE’s free membership," said BBC on-demand boss Daniel Danker.
BBC iPlayer boss Dave Price said that games consoles were no longer "just about gaming" and that they had transformed into home media hubs.
"I can tell you the fight is already happening in my home for control of the Xbox! And my wife has never been interested in Call of Duty!", Price blogged.

Sure, you can buy Dragon's Lair for many, many (many) platforms, but Xbox 360 is not one of them. Unless you count buying a DVD version and playing it through the Xbox's DVD player. That embarrassing omission is now being corrected: a PEGI rating has been spotted for an XBLA version of the FMV game. We're shocked ... that it took this long for Dragon's Lair to end up on Xbox.
Being a rating and not an official announcement, there's no actual release date associated with this newly discovered XBLA release. We're checking in with Digital Leisure, who will probably tell us about a couple more upcoming ports of Dragon's Lair in the process of answering.

The days of the triple-A blockbuster are over, for today the games industry worships a new goal – the quadruple-A title.
Well, that’s if you listen to Microsoft, which in a recent job listing spotted by Gamefront used the term quadruple-A (or AAAA, to be precise) no less than three times.
“Microsoft Studios (Xbox) is looking for a dynamic and seasoned Executive Producer to lead and develop a world-class team who will own the creation and delivery of a AAAA experience that delivers on 1st party goals,” the listing reads.
“The EP will have P&L responsibility for a major Xbox AAAA console title and deliver the end-to-end AAAA title experience (Concept, Prototype, Greenlight, Pre-Production, Production, Release, ongoing revenue streams and a complete franchise plan).”
Those who believe they’re packing the prerequisite number of As will need to be able to commute to Redmond in the US. And some other market experience – all of which can be found in the official ad.
