The experiences of a young woman in Texas have highlighted security issues for Microsoft's Xbox Live service, after her account was hacked and points purchased on it sold to the highest bidder.
Susan T shared her story on a blog which documented her correspondence with both Microsoft and someone who had bought the points fraudulently purchased with her account.
She became aware of the problem on January 2 when she received purchase confirmations from Microsoft for 10,000 points and the Family Gold Pack, as well as an email to say the points had been successfully transferred. She had been charged $214.97, and immediately contacted Microsoft's Xbox Phone Support Team, who blocked her account.
On January 4, despite being told her account was blocked, she was charged another $124.98 for another 10,000 points, which were transferred to the user RipplyCorgi16. She contacted Microsoft again, who told her they had been unable to block her account.
72 hours after her initial contact with Microsoft, the account was still not blocked and she was able to contact RipplyCorgi16, the user who had received the latest batch of stolen points.
He told her he was based in Poland and he had purchased the Xbox Live account from a site called TradeTang, a Chinese wholesale site where 10,000 Microsoft Points are currently available for around $30.
He had been directed there by the seller via a Polish trading site called Allegro, and handed over the seller's Allegro username and email address. She has also been in touch with Microsoft again.
"I have spoken to Microsoft again and the rep I chatted to was appalled that no one else had actually managed to get my account blocked since the moment I first reported the issue on Monday."
"He said he is going to pass my case onto the Tier 3 team who will phone me once my account has been blocked and the investigation began."
GamesIndustry.biz has contacted Susan T for an update on the situation.
Late last year Microsoft denied that Xbox Live had been hacked blaming phishing scams.
"Xbox Live has not been hacked. Microsoft can confirm that there has been no breach to the security of our Xbox Live service."

After a protracted court battle involving lawsuits on both sides of the fence, Microsoft and Datel have finally settled their differences and moved on. Bloomberg reports that a December 30 court filing outs a settlement between the two -- a settlement that Microsoft spokesperson Kevin Kutz describes as "to the satisfaction of both parties," without getting any more specific.
Datel's suit against Microsoft claimed the console manufacturer was in breach of antitrust laws in updating its firmware to lock out Datel devices. Microsoft denied the claims and fought back with its own lawsuit against Datel, claiming patent infringement over a third-party controller created by Datel, that too closely resembled the official 360 controller. Datel had yet to respond to request for comment as of publishing.

If you elect to queue a demo from Xbox.com on your browser, and you aren't logged into Xbox.com on that device, you run the risk of accidentally buying the content instead of trying it out, as pointed out by a Giant Bomb user.
That's because after you click the "Try Game" button and log in, the system acts as if you've elected to buy, giving you a "Confirm Purchase" button. If you aren't paying attention, and you just click through, you'll have made the purchase.
Luckily, Microsoft told Giant Bomb that the web team is aware of the problem, and is "actively working to resolve it." In the meantime, read every button!

Sid Meier's Firaxis Games has announced XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a strategy game in the mould of the Julian Gollop classics to be released this autumn for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
The announcement comes from Game Informer magazine, and is billed as a "full-on strategy game" in stark contrast to the FPS reboot in development at 2K Marin, whose president Christoph Hartmann memorably said last year: "Strategy games are just not contemporary … times are changing."
Firaxis president Steve Martin said: "It's been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We're huge fans of the original game and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to reinvision a game that is as beloved as X-COM.
"We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while deliveringan entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

A next generation Xbox may be able to record TV direct to your console. This DVR - digital video recorder - technology was detailed in a freshly granted (27th December) Microsoft patent. The patent was filed in January 2007, hence the rather antiquated (and terribly scanned) accompanying drawings (you'll need a TIFF viewer for your browser to view them)."An integrated gaming and media experience is disclosed, including recording of content on a gaming console," the patent, via Kotaku, read."A digital video recorder (DVR) application running alongside a television client component allows users to record media content on the gaming console."The DVR application also integrates itself with the console menu. Once integrated, users can record media content while playing games."Alternatively, users can record content when the gaming console is turned off."The recorded content can include television programming, gaming experience (whether local or online), music, DVDs, and so on."When in the recording state, users can also switch between various other media modes, whether gaming, television, and so on."Microsoft is expected to announce its new Xbox this year. Two new machines are apparently planned: one a paired-down console that serves as a set-top portal for Kinect; the other a fully-featured next generation machine. The announcement may happen as soon as this month, at the CES electronics show in Las Vegas. This takes place from 10th to 13th January.

Firearms may have been too suggestive a topic for the Xbox Live Marketplace to broach, but apparently body modification is an A-OK, family friendly activity for everyone to enjoy. Xbox Live customers now have the opportunity to trade real money for virtual tattoos on fake people via the Marketplace. Available designs encompass the whole of "regrettable," from hot-rod flames and meaningless "tribal" scribbles to idealistic kanji symbols for "peace" and "love."
We should point out that the tattoos aren't actually accessories, but rather t-shirts and tank tops with transparent design "sleeves" that replace your existing clothing, meaning that it's impossible to have a tattoo with anything other than a blank shirt. Tattoos are also arm specific, just like in real life, so make sure you're really committed to the placement of your "Mom" heart before dropping the Microsoft points.

Following an increasing occurrence of Xbox Live account hack reports, we are growing concerned over Microsoft's Windows Live ID system, the only layer of protection between a hacker gaining access to a person's Xbox Live account and their information. In our research, the only consistency we saw across users who were hacked was the general inconsistency of what email and payment method was used on their account. Hotmail, Gmail and school emails were used for their Windows Live ID, while payment methods used were credit cards and PayPal. Other than a compromised Windows Live ID, there wasn't a common thread we could identify.
It's been several months since we started following the "FIFA hack," a rather blunt scam that saw Xbox Live accounts drained so thieves could purchase in-game FIFA 12 'Ultimate Team' cards for use and sale. We have been tracking the FIFA issue and following up on other tips that weren't necessarily rooted in the FIFA hack, but related in that users saw exploitation of payment methods tied to their account. A recent Shacknews editorial detailed accounts compromised by the FIFA exploit.

It's been something of a rocky road for Xbox Live Indie Game developers, often confronted with less than ideal exposure and competing with not only huge retail games, but also incredibly cheap titles on mobile platforms like iOS. Microsoft has today addressed a handful of concerns that XBLIG devs face, notably the issues of game size and pricing.
First, the size of projects has been greatly increased, from 150 megabytes to the new maximum of 500 megabytes. Second, and perhaps most important, Microsoft has removed one of the major restrictions on price. Before, all games that exceeded 50MB in size we required to be priced at either $3 or $5, making them hard to position against both XBLA titles and mobile titles on other platforms. The minimum price has now been reduced to $1 (80 MS Points), making XBL Indies more competitive and (potentially) more lucrative.
Finally, Microsoft has raised the cap on the number of titles any developer is allowed to host on the Indie Games service. Previously topping out at 10, developers may now have a total of 20 games available at any given time. Of course, you know what this means: Moar Gaems with Z0mb1ES in Th3m and a larger assortment of choice weapons.

It's been just over six months since the release of UFC Personal Trainer -- just enough time for you to recover from your first workout. Now you can get pummeled by a new downloadable pack.
The Urijah Faber Workout Pack features the UFC bantamweight, in a series of five new routines and 15 "Hit the Mitts" drills. If you're more interested in building up your virtual self in UFC Undisputed 3 than your real self, you'll be delighted to hear that this DLC confers some kind of upgrade to your Create-A-Fighter character in that game.
This Workout Pack is free, but it will be followed by two more paid expansions, each selling for 800 MSP ($10): the "Cain Velasquez Workout Pack" on January 31 and the "Jon Jones Workout Pack" on February 21. All are exclusive to the Xbox version.

Despite the relative silence on Dust: An Elysian Tail since it won 2009's "Dream-Build-Play" competition, one man has been playing it daily for years now. That exclusive audience is the game's developer, Dean Dodrill, who says the game will finally be released at some point in 2012. Nay, he promises it'll be released in 2012.
"It's coming out in 2012, promise," Dodrill wrote under his pseudonym "Noogy" on the Neogaf forums. He doesn't give any other details, or even a more specific launch window, but we've reached out for a more definitive date.

Xbox Live is hosting some decent deals on Electronic Arts content this week. Notable games include Risk: Factions for $5, Shank for $7.50 or Dragon Age: Origins for $15.
Plenty of DLC is up for grabs as well, including Dead Space 2 "Severed" or Mass Effect 2 "Arrival" DLC for $3 each, or Dragon Age's "Witch Hunt" DLC for $4. You can check out the full selection of sale items – oddly split into two different lists – here and here.

You go to a fortune teller and ask what will happen in 2012, expecting her to repeat rejected phrases from the Panda Express fortune-cookie line in a wistful, croaking manner. Instead, she busts out this ratings list for coming XBLA titles and you tip her 200 percent, leaving with your mind blown and open to a whole new world of mental planes and spiritual awareness. Little did you know: that fortune teller was Jordan Mallory in a dress. Try excising that image with incense.
A batch of freshly rated XBLA games from around the world include titles we knew about, such as I Am Alive (MA 15+ for Australia) and Spelunky (PEGI 7 for UK), and also some unknown games, including Wreckateer, a submission from Microsoft rated for Korea. The list is provided by XBLA Fans, and can be found right here.

This year's great platformer nobody bought, Rayman Origins, is just one of the alluring items on sale in GameStop's new year sale. Now you can fix that by totally buying Rayman: Origins for $30. Just a suggestion!
If you're looking to upgrade that crummy launch unit or finally see what this "next gen" is all about, GameStop is also offering a pretty sweet Xbox 360 package. A 250GB Xbox 360 S without Kinect will net shoppers a $75 gift card. If you want Kinect, GameStop has knocked off $20, bringing it down to $129.99.
This GameStop sale lasts until January 3, so you'll need to act relatively quickly. For the full weekly ad, hit up the source link below.

Austerity means the military can't afford the big-budget training exercises to battle-harden new recruits, so it's relying more on computer simulations. Sadly, Virtual Battlespace 2 can't compete with the Hollywood-style excitement of Modern Warfare. That's why it's buying in game engines from the studios (VB2 was based on tech licensed from the makers of Operation Flashpoint) and cutting out the unrealistic physics -- such as rifle bullets flying three miles and vehicles that don't obey gravity. It's hoped the project will keep the attention of death-match hardened trainees and encourage them to play it in their own time: the team were told that two soldiers learned enough skills to stay alive during combat thanks to marathon sessions in the game. If you've just unwrapped an FPS for the holidays, you can now tell disapproving family members that it's educational.

How do you weigh yourself when there's no gravity keeping you down? Well, you can calculate your mass by sitting on an oscillating spring and comparing its standing frequency to your riding frequency (NASA's current method), or you could rig up a Kinect sensor to tell you when you're getting fat. Carmelo Velardo, a Eurocom computer scientist in Alphes-Maritimes, France, is developing the latter option. Working with colleagues at the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for Human Space Robotics, Velardo paired the Kinect sensor's 3D modelingdigs with a database of weight to body measurements of 28,000 people -- the resulting system can guess your weight with a 97 percent accuracy.
NASA scientist John Charles notes that while the rig works well on the ground, it might hit some snags in space. Microgravity can shift water around in an astronaut's body, changing their density and potentially throwing off the Kinect setup's readings. Still, Charles says the technique "appears feasible," and suggests pairing it with the existing weight measurement tools might "provide insights into changes in body density that might be illuminating." Velardo hopes to test the system in parabolic flight soon. If he succeeds, not even outer space will protect us from the shameful judgment of video game peripherals. Now if you'll excuse us, we have some squat-thrusts to get to.

December 28th, 2011, 00:37 Posted By: wraggster
When xk3y was first launched we produced an OEM version for one of our Chinese partners. This version was locked down to a few Asian language to promote sales in Asia and discourage resellers to export the OEM version to other regions. Sadly, some unscrupulous resellers still sold the OEM version to other regions, leaving end users with xk3y devices that would only display Asian languages on the remote.
We have always stressed that this is an OEM version and not something we support, as we do not offer it for sale. When these issues first surfaced, we discontinued the OEM deal and has since only supplied the standard version. However, in the interest of consumers who have received the OEM version we have decided to remove all language restrictions in the firmware, starting with version 1.12.
- Fixed "Network Fail" Message
- Latest Mr_Waffles Web app
- Asian Language lock removed
- Improved French language strings
- Added more languages (TUR Turkish)
