During the Game Developer's Choice awards, DICE took home the prize of "Best Technology" for its Frostbite 2 engine. After accepting the award on behalf of his team, we asked DICE rendering architect Johan Andersson what the next generation of consoles would need to include for Frostbite 2 to work 'perfectly and as intended on high-end PCs.' To Andersson, the answer is "pretty easy to answer."
"There's two things: memory and processing power," he said. "We need lots and lots of processing power. The more you can cram into a machine, we'll take advantage of that." While 'more power' is the obvious answer -- both on the CPU and GPU side -- we wondered what wouldn't be 'enough' to work with.
"Two gigabytes would not be enough when it comes to RAM [random access memory]" Andersson said. "Four gigabytes would work. Eight gigabytes? Yeah. I think that would be perfect when it comes to memory." Recommended system specifications for Battlefield 3 call for 4GB of RAM.

A fresh batch of Trine 2 DLC is dropping this summer, and it will include six new stages, a shiny new story and new skills. XBLA Fans picked up the news from Frozenbyte marketing director Mikael Haveri during a GDC 2012 panel this week. Haveri also said there would be a lot of puzzles based on light, water, low gravity and magnetic elements.
Frozenbyte's next project is an original IP set to launch at $15 for unannounced platforms, Haveri teased to XBLA Fans. At that price, we feel confident expecting a downloadable release.

There are no plans for Halo 4 to receive a public beta, 343 Industries announced in a Q&A with franchise development director Frank O' Connor. He answered a slew of fan questions about Halo 4, revealing that it would be possible to play Grifball, that there would not be a color-blind mode (though considerations for that audience have been made in art decisions), and a few other tidbits. Check out the full factsheet here.
In related Halo 4 news, Microsoft recently won a legal battle against the bogus website Halo4beta.net, but as there won't be a Halo 4 beta we don't expect it to be put back into official use any time soon. Microsoft has also filed a complaint against Halo4beta.biz.

Upcoming XBLA platformer Fez won the Seamus McNally Grand Prize, the top honour at last night's Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards at GDC in San Francisco.
Developer Phil Fish caused controversy earlier in the week when he told a Japanese developer that his nation's games "suck", but he is now in the headlines for all the right reasons, and has won $30,000 as a result. As our GDC diarist reports, he celebrated bycutting a rug to The Cure.
Thechineseroom's haunting adventure Dear Esther, which has sold 70,000 copies since its Steam release last month, won the award for Excellence In Visual Arts, while Beat Sneak Bandit took home the Best Mobile Game award. The Audience Award, the winner of which is selected by public vote, went to Frozen Synapse.- Student Showcast: Way

Halo 4 runs at a native 720p resolution, developer 343 Industries has confirmed.Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor took to forum NeoGAF to answer questions about the upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive. The Halo series has, since Halo 3 on Xbox 360, come in for a certain amount of stick for outputting in below-HD resolutions. And following this week's release of snippets of Halo 4 gameplay footage, one fan wrote: "… looks like it's sub-HD still, hopefully no lower than Reach".O'Connor replied: "it is native 720p."Additional information: Halo 4 does not use any engine technology from last year's Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary."It shares no engine tech with Anniversary," O'Connor said. "Almost every single system, audio, rendering, lighting, you name it, has been either radically overhauled or rewritten from the ground up."At this point saying it's based on a previous version of the engine basically speaks to a few pieces of code."And finally, O'Connor addressed concern over the apparent inclusion of perks in Halo 4 - a first for the series."There aren't 'perks' in the game as being described here," he said. "And classic Halo is still there. But there are things we will be rolling out soon to put all of this discussion in a much better perspective and I suspect calm frayed nerves."Then: "We didn't mention them. That's why I put it in quotes. That term was coined by someone else to interpret stuff they saw in the UI. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and to be expected during announce fervour. And yes, it's partly our fault since we're rolling out more information about this stuff at a later time."For the record, this is what Halo 4 creative director Josh Holmes said at last week's Microsoft showcase event in San Francisco, attended by Eurogamer."You, as a player, have the ability to customise all aspects of your Spartan warrior - and not just cosmetically. For the first time in a Halo title, you can actually change gameplay-impacting components. This allows you to customise load outs and gives you gameplay enhancements that can be unlocked through the progression system."

Some instances of Commander Shepard are embarking on Mass Effect 3's climactic campaign with some alterations. The galaxy's most important (and most imported) face is not being properly preserved in the transfer between some games of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 (ours included), prompting BioWare to work on a correction.
According to BioWare's Community Coordinator, Chris Priestly, "The issue is likely in how faces were detected when imported from Mass Effect 1 into Mass Effect 2, and we're working on the best way to correct it for affected players." In our experience, a wonky import process only messes with facial data, and none of Shepard's recorded actions throughout the previous games.
If you're driven mad by inconsistent canon -- or can't bear the thought of Shepard being vain enough to get some touch-ups before his last stand -- BioWare is pointing you to a set of user-made tools for the PC version. As far as we know, this is the only time we'll ever recommend DIY facial surgery.

Xbox 360 owners can now access music video application Vevo in the UK, US, Canada and Ireland.
The service – which goes live today – lets users watch more than 45,000 music videos by 11,000 artists, from Kelly Clarkson to Tinie Tempah. They can also browse videos using Kinect’s voice recognition technology.
The Vevo app is part of Microsoft’s Xbox Live entertainment push, which has already seen other dashboard apps appear on the online platform, such as YouTube, Blinkbox and MSN.
Vevo joins other Xbox Live music apps such as Zune and Muzu.TV.
Users will require an Xbox Live Gold subscription to use Vevo. Microsoft currently charges an annual fee of £39.99 for this service.

March 7th, 2012, 23:14 Posted By: wraggster
Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 will explode at retail this summer, supported by the publisher’s biggest UK campaign to date.
Marketing efforts will be centred around the release of the Xbox 360 and PS3 SKUs on May 18th, targeting both fans of the shooter series and a wider audience of action gamers.
Highlights of the campaign will include prominent TV spots during the Champions’ League finals and other mainstream programming, as well as a national outdoor campaign. The latter will see billboards and roadside bus shelter posters spread across the UK for two weeks after the game’s release.
“Max Payne 3 will be our biggest and boldest marketing effort thus far and we’ve looked to improve across all areas on what we did for Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire,” a Rockstar spokesperson told MCV.
“A massive media investment has already started, but the main launch thrust will coincide with Easter all the way through to beyond the PC release on June 1st.”
Retail is already playing its part, as Rockstar has worked closely with partners on its timed Special Edition. This new initiative encourages pre-orders by only making the premium SKU and its extras available until April 2nd.
“It’s bound to be a brilliant game and, as a Rockstar title, it has a fantastic heritage to draw on, and will hopefully follow in the tradition of L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption,” said HMV senior games buyer Jason Brooks.
“It’s a sequel that’s been nearly nine years in the making, so you can understand the anticipation building around it.”
Rockstar’s rep added: “We have very high expectations. The response from retail has been overwhelmingly positive and for that we are incredibly grateful for their trust and belief in us and Max Payne 3.”

March 7th, 2012, 02:31 Posted By: wraggster
Major Nelson has posted the schedule for upcoming Xbox Live content, replete with plenty of new releases and deals. We knew most of the XBLA release dates already, including March 7 for I Am Alive and March 14 for Shoot Many Robots. What we didn't know was the March 14 release of Defenders of Ardania, a fantasy tower defense game we first heard about over a year ago.
Beyond XBLA, this week's Deal of the Week sees Borderlands DLC heavily discounted, in most cases by 50 percent. Next week's deal will slash prices on several dungeon crawlers, including Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale, The Baconing, Torchlight, and Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, all of which will be 50 percent off.
Finally, a Dead or Alive 5 demo is slated for March 19, presumably the one of the same demos included with Ninja Gaiden 3 (which is totally coming out this month, lest you forgot). Head over to Major Nelson for the full content schedule.

Medal of Honor Warfighter is apparently EA's big holiday shooter this year, with a leaked European trailer indicating an October 23 launch date. The sequel to 2010's Medal of Honor is also being handled by EA's Danger Close studio, though DICE isn't picking up the multiplayer slack this time around. As October 23 is a Tuesday, it looks like that will also account for a US release date, but we've reached out to EA for clarification all the same.
Update: EA released the US trailer as well now, which shows October 23 as the release date too. So there's that!

There's a major difference between the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter X Tekken and its PS3 twin, it turns out. According to the manual included with both versions, the game's tag team modes allow you and a local friend to sign on to the same console and fight against two other people online; your buddy presses start at the character select screen and off you go. In actuality, this functionality only exists in the PS3 version of the game.
The issue has been acknowledged by Christian Svensson at Capcom, who stated that Capcom has no plans to patch the feature in, and that its inclusion in the manual was a mistake. "The reason for this difference is because of the architecture differences between [Xbox Live] gamertags and PSN IDs. I'm not sure of the technical details, but basically it amounts to: Sony made it so you can mix and match online and offline, and Microsoft made it so you can't."
That sounded like a reasonable explanation, until we remembered that the 360 version of Mortal Kombat does that exact thing, allowing two local players to take part in tag-team battles online. If it's possible for NetherRealm Studios to include the feature in Mortal Kombat -- the MK studio's first release under the NetherRealm banner -- its exclusion from Capcom's brand-new flagship fighter seems strange at the very least.

2K Czech creating animations for general gameplay and cut scenes, claims source
Mafia II developer 2K Czech is collaborating with Rockstar on the development of Grand Theft Auto V, according to a report.
A source speaking to VG247 said that the Czech studio was creating animations for in-game cut scenes and general gameplay.
2K declined to comment on the rumours.
The source also claimed that the collaboration was part of Take Two’s plan to make the Mafia games into a “major franchise”, with development on Mafia III currently underway.
No details were given on the project, although 2K were allegedly in attendance at the rumoured Xbox next-gen console summit “Durango” in London.

Kinect Star Wars looks like it'll make a mockery of the Star Wars universe AND give your sister another reason to commandeer your Kinect all in one shot.
The new video below shows a girl looking stupid while pretending to play the pod racing section of the game from Episode 1. Then you see some shanky-looking Lightsaber action before showing the facepalm-inducing dancing bit. It's almost hard to believe this is real. It is.
Kinect Star Wars and the limited edition 'R2-D2' Xbox 360 will release in the UK on April 3 for £39.99 and £349.99 respectively.

Capcom announced this morning that Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon Citywill include a multiplayer mode entitled "Nemesis Mode," exclusively for Xbox 360. Now, don't go thinkin' this DLC is free or something crazy like that. Nemesis Mode will be available at launch, on March 20, for 320 Microsoft Points ($4).
Nemesis Mode has the USS verses the Spec Ops in an eight-man battle with someone able to control a Nemesis. While one team tracks down a control unit, the other can "give the Nemesis orders to destroy the opposition." As with all things "exclusive," we don't know how long it'll take before this multiplayer mode infects other platforms, but we're sure not even Capcom can contain Nemesis.
