The Call of Duty mega-hit garnered massive sales but left Infinity Ward off top spot, so what gives?
Previously we looked at how Nintendo’s revenues had dipped significantly during its transition months to the 3DS and its upcoming next-gen console the Wii U.
Over the coming weeks, Develop will be publishing extracts and highlight data from the book, which uses GfK Chart-Track research on retail sales to formulate a ranking based on UK revenues.
The Develop 100 is an iPad-exclusive book, available for just £4.99 via the Develop iPad app. Click here to download it.
Today we look at the curious case of the latest entry into the games industry’s biggest blockbuster, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Despite knocking all of its competitors out of the park with UK retail revenues for the game reaching an incredible £128.58m, developers Infinity Ward was pipped to the top spot of the Develop 100 by EA Canada, which ‘only’ raised £113.27m overall.

With Mountain Lion newly available and Windows 8 on the verge of shipping, now was a pretty good time for VMware to update its Fusion virtualization software, dont'cha think? The company just announced Fusion 5 with 70-plus new features, including support for Win 8 and tight integration with OS X 10.8. For instance, you can now view Windows programs in Mountain Lion's Launchpad, while VMware software updates pop up in the Notification Center. Fusion also supports AirPlay for the first time, and you can also run either Mountain Lion or Mountain Lion Server as a virtual machine. The company also added support for Retina Display MacBook Pros, so that everything looks crisp on that 2,880 x 1,880 screen. Also of note: Fusion now supports USB 3.0, and Linux users get some love in the form of Open GL 2.1 graphics support.
The standard version of Fusion 5 is available now for $49.99, but people who bought Fusion 4 since the release of Mountain Lion can upgrade for free. There's also a professional version ($100 for one license), which includes all the above features, and also lets IT departments lock down settings for employees' virtual machines.

If you're expecting a price cut on 360 this holiday, you may be disappointed
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft today lowered the price on its Kinect camera peripheral in the US by $40. It's a sign that Microsoft is getting ready to ramp up for the holidays, but is it also a portent of an imminent price drop on Xbox 360 hardware? Not necessarily, according to top industry analysts speaking to GamesIndustry International.
Most analysts we spoke with think Microsoft is much more likely to continue enhancing its bundle offerings rather than slashing any hardware prices.
"Price cut no, bundles yes. For now, I think Microsoft is happy with Xbox sales and some early traction in the different pricing models they have rolled out at retail," said Colin Sebastian of RW Baird. "We still expect the launch of the next Xbox in the fall of 2013, so there will still need to be a price cut on the current gen, although perhaps not until after the holidays. I am sure retailers will offer their own promotions this holiday though."
Sebastian makes a good point. Consumers hungry for great deals may still find a sudden temporary sale price for Xbox 360 at huge brick-and-mortar stores like Walmart. To the extent that Microsoft will cut prices on anything, it will be in the form of discounted bundles.
"I don't believe an Xbox 360 price cut is imminent. The Xbox 360 hardware still leads in sales and I do doubt whether we even see a price cut at all in 2012. However, we should expect a holiday season full of discounted and limited edition bundles that, on paper, would reflect a price cut. But a full price cut on the base hardware, I wouldn't expect one until early 2013," Jesse Divnich of EEDAR told us.
Divnich noted one caveat in his prediction, however, and it involves Nintendo. "Of course, this is entirely dependent upon the success of the Wii U. If the Wii U comes flying out of the gates and begins to impact Xbox 360 hardware, I would expect Microsoft to react swiftly with a price cut or more aggressive retail promotions," he added.
Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter couldn't believe that Kinect hadn't seen a price cut already. "I thought Kinect had been cut a long time ago, and can't believe that the standalone unit sells that well," he said. Pachter is forecasting a slight reduction on the current Kinect bundles. "I think they will price a Kinect bundle at $50 lower than the current bundles, so $249 for the 4GB bundle and $349 for the 250GB bundle, and yes, I think this is a sign [of future Xbox hardware cuts]," he remarked, deviating from other analysts' opinions.
Aside from the possibility of Xbox 360 hardware seeing a price cut, we also have to look at what a Kinect price cut means for Kinect. Is Microsoft paving the way for a Kinect 2 launch this holiday? Lewis Ward of IDC Research believes so.
"I'm leaning toward Microsoft not cutting the price of the Xbox 360 in the near future since it's already selling quite well, though a minor cut is possible. I think there will definitely be some interesting bundles this holiday season," he noted, then adding, "I'll go out on a limb as far as the Kinect MSRP cut goes. It's been rumored that Kinect 2 will arrive with the Windows 8 launch at the end of October. It's possible that Microsoft is clearing the channel in preparation of this (potential) new arrival."

The chief executive of Ubisoft believes that next-gen hardware will breathe new life into the declining games business, and claims that the platform holders have taken too long to introduce new systems.
"The consoles are coming," Yves Guillemot said in an interview with GamesIndustry International."We're waiting for the new consoles - I think that the new consoles will give a huge boost to the industry, just like they do every time that they come. This time, they took too long so the market is waiting."
Historic lows at retail suggest the industry needs a new stimulus to grow again.
"With the innovation that we'll see from, first, the Wii U then the other consoles, the market is going to grow enormously again," Guillemot said.
"I think it's very important for new generations to come regularly with innovations for the industry, so I think we've been waiting a bit too long. What is important is that when those new generations do come, they bring enough innovation to make the market strong again."
The Nintendo Wii U release date and Wii U price will likely be revealed at a press event Nintendo is hosting in New York City on September 13th.

The next DLC pack for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has de-cloaked. "Raven Strike" is three new campaign missions and one new Guerrilla map, all playable for up to four players. Ubisoft claims "Raven Strike" is a "throwback to traditional Ghost Recon gameplay" featuring "larger maps, complex missions and an increased level of difficulty."
"Raven Strike" will launch on September 11 for 1200 MS Points ($15) on Xbox 360 and PS3. The PC version will be available – you guessed it – "at a later date."

Two versions of the Halo 4 soundtrack will become available on October 22, but only one of them will cost more than the game itself. Composed by Massive Attack alumni Neil Davidge, the standard edition Halo 4 soundtrack will encompass 15 tracks from the game's score in both physical and digital formats for $13.98.
The Special Edition 2-Disc Box Set, on the other hand, will set you back quite a bit more. At $75, the package includes the standard soundtrack, a 14-track remix album (sorry, no Skrillex), a behind-the-scenes "Making of Halo 4 Music" DVD and accompanying hardcover book with "composition notes from Neil Davidge plus exclusive behind-the-scenes photos and exclusive artwork images." The kit also comes with a 12-inch art print signed by Davidge, an honest-to-goodness vinyl record with Cortana and Master Chief on the disc itself, and a special shirt for your Xbox Live avatar.
Whether your Halo-music monetary threshold is $14 or $75, both versions will be available at Halo Waypoint.

The Xbox camera can now be purchased for $40 less
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb announced today that the company has reduced the price of the standalone Kinect camera to $109 in the US, which represents a reduction of $40. He stated that "there are no price drop plans for EMEA and Japan."
Canada, Latin America and Asia Pacific regions where Kinect is sold will also see price cuts on Kinect, and by October 4th, Kinect will see a reduced price in Australia and New Zealand. The exact retail price in these other regions was not specified.
Microsoft is gearing up for what it hopes will be a strong holiday, particularly in the US where Xbox consistently outsells other consoles, and it's likely that we'll also be hearing about new Kinect bundles or even a price drop on Xbox 360 itself.

Just in time for the upcoming holiday rush, Microsoft has posted news of a new accessory pack, which will wrap up almost everything you need to accompany a new Xbox 360 into one $79.99 kit. The Xbox 360 Essentials pack will include a wireless controller, a media remote, an HDMI cable, and a three-month Xbox Live Gold membership.
Microsoft says you can save a full $55 by buying these items in the pack rather than separately, which does make us wonder where exactly they're shopping. But if you're giving a 360 this year (or know someone who's getting one and could use some extra gear), this might make a nice package under the celebratory symbol of your respective holiday.

There's still no word on when or if it will ever make it to the US, but the PSN and XBLA re-release of Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus had its Japanese release window narrowed from a rather broad "summer" time frame into late October, according to Andriasang.
As you may have noticed, October is totally not summer at all, and no reason for the delay was given. We have learned a little more about the game's balance, though: At launch, GGXXACP will temporarily play identically to the PS2 version. Eventually, the game will be patched to reflect the changes made toGuilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R, which is currently being tested in Japanese arcades.

Companies are no strangers to superlatives where new kit is concerned and Mad Catz is definitely no exception. With the release of its newest flagship, the Tritton Warhead 7.1, the outfit's claiming a novelty in the Xbox 360 space, labeling these cans as the "first... to deliver two-way communication" without the need for wires or controller adapters. Made specifically for Microsoft's green X gaming platform, the pair of 50mm drivers pump out Dolby 7.1 virtual surround sound over a 5.8GHz channel for up to 33ft of interference-free smack talk. The headset also offers gamers the ability to monitor their in-ear voice levels (SVM), control the volume of other players, as well as select EQ presets for a variety of media playback. And just so you never have to press pause to keep the friendly banter (read: cusses) flowing, the company's bundled in a dock and pair of of Li-ion batteries for "hot-swappable" recharging. These over-ears are available now for a cool $299 at BestBuy and the company's own site, so if you take your first-person action seriously, prepare to part with a few Benjamins. Official presser after the break.

Electronic Arts made over $39 million in just three months off FIFA 12's Ultimate Team DLC last year – a 69 percent increase from the same period the year before – but it also created a lot of headaches for consumers (and us) with what came to be known as the "FIFA hack."
"We learned a lot from the experience. A lot of companies are suffering from this right now. There's a lot of sophisticated hacking happening in the gaming industry and it's a continuous battle," EA Games president Frank Gibeau told us during Gamescom. "We take it very seriously, put a lot of resources on it. The learning from the FIFA example last year has been incorporated this year. There's some incremental and additional things. I don't want to get too detailed because I don't want to tip our hand. Rest assured, we take it very seriously."
Gibeau said that EA did hire someone from Microsoft to add layers of security precautions and other anti-hack methods inside the publisher's products.
"You're never going to win this battle," said Gibeau, recognizing the company can only go so far. "The moment you declare victory, somebody will walk in and show you didn't. So you have to continuously stay on top of it and, most importantly, keep account integrity the first and foremost issue."
So, should consumers feel more confident this year that they won't be hacked?
"I hope that they do, and I think our performance will have to make them feel that way." He concluded, "We can promise it, but we have to actually show it."

August 20th, 2012, 21:53 Posted By: wraggster
This year’s instalment of Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series is stepping up the licencing war with EA’s FIFA IP.
PES 2013 will boast 150 licenses in total, including the entire Spanish league, every team in Italy’s Serie A, The UEFA Champions League, a host of European club teams and 17 additional international teams, including England.
What it lacks, however, is a strong showing from the Premier League. In fact, Konami’s press material suggests that Manchester United will be the only licenced team from the English divisions.
Konami has been especially bullish in the build-up to PES 2013, clearly buoyed by the genuine belief that the game is best the series has produced since its PS2 heyday.
“We always focused on gameplay and that’s what we want to get back to,” UK PES boss John Murphy said last month.
“Maybe EA thinks they’ve gone far enough with gameplay and they’ve got other things to do – maybe they want to attract a different kind of audience with different features.
“But I’ve always thought it’s right that we should be concentrating really hard on the way you play a game against someone else, and that unique PES feeling, which is all about gameplay.”
However, licences are the one area where Konami has admitted that it cannot compete. The reason for this is simple. Licencing is not about dev talent or strategy – it’s about raw spending power.
And when your opponent is EA and it’s going around buying exclusivity agreements with individual clubs and leagues, that’s a lose-lose battle.

'c4eva' and 'Team Xecuter' have issued an statement on their upcoming plans for the currently 'uncrackable' Lite-On 1175 Xbox 360 drive
So it seems once this new board is available from TX, 'c4eva' will release the firmware for the Lite-On 1175, as the SPI is also locked on the DG-16D5S in addition to new firmware encryption used on v1175, so the new replacement PCB will allow the user to freely update drive at will with no problems.

As of August 15, Xbox Live Indie Game CastleMiner Z, which is priced at 80 MS Points ($1), has exceeded sales of 900,000 – making it the most successful XBLIG to date, developer DigitalDNA Games claims.
"Based on the positions in the daily best selling lists it may very well be the best selling XBLIG of all time, but I won't feel fully comfortable saying that until we have reached the top of the xbox.com best selling list, which I project should happen when we round out 1M units sales in the next 4-6 weeks, becoming the first XBLIG to do so," DigitalDNA Games' Thomas Steinke told Joystiq. Still, CastleMiner Z has been at the top of Major Nelson's XBLIG list since launching back in November. And CastleMiner Z is always at the top ofthe daily best-selling area of xbox.com.
Steinke only had nice things to say about Microsoft, saying that creating XBLIG games has been "an unbelievable and life changing experience," though he does wish they paid more attention to the XBLIG channel. "We have really wanted to make an XBLA title for a long time, you would think when you have a developer that has moved millions of units on XBLIG that it would get some attention from them, however that hasn't been the case for us."
Joystiq has contacted Microsoft to confirm DigitalDNA's claims; however, the company typically does not disclose XBLIG sales data to the public.

The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was never coming to consoles this year, according to Adam Badowski, managing director at developer CD Projekt Red. Back in May, retail listings for the game, popularly believed to be deceased, popped up on a Danish retail site and Blockbuster.dk.
"It's not true; that's a mistake. It's not even rumor, it's a mistake," Badowski told us at Gamescom. Asked if the console version was, in fact, cancelled three years ago he definitively exclaimed, "Yes! You never know, but we are busy and have two different games."
Those two different games are one unannounced project and Cyberpunk. CD Projekt Red announced modding tools for The Witcher 2 at the show this week.
