Future says its Official Xbox Magazine website has increased its traffic by 220 per cent year-on-year.
According to ComScore data, the site scored 504,068 global visitors last month, making it ‘the biggest dedicated Xbox content site in the UK.’
It follows a refresh of the website last year. OXM’s editor Jon Hicks has hailed the editorial team for driving the improved results.
Hicks told MCV: “It’s down to the new site design, our popular combination of Xbox-specific news and features, and some outstanding work and dedication from online editor Edwin Evans-Thirlwell supported by the rest of
the team.”
OXM’s statement of strength comes ahead of the launch of a new rival Xbox site, Outside Xbox, which is being run by former OXM writer Mike Channell.

Square Enix sure has been busy strengthening its place in the Western market as today’s Game Of The Day shows.
The company, famous for its catalogue of Japanese role playing games, has taken charge of some big western titles like Hitman, Deus Ex and Tomb Raider after merging with Eidos in 2009.
Set in Hong Kong, players control Wei Shen, a Chinese-American police officer having to investigate the dark and seedy world of China’s Triads. It’s almost ironic seeing that Sleeping Dogs, developed by Canadian developer United From Games, is the ultimate in East meets West.
In 2011, to follow suit with its western focus, Square Enix acquired what is now known as Sleeping Dogs. The move was a surprise more than anything else seeing that the game had been dropped by Activision.
Here’s a bit of a history lesson: Activision’s True Crime: New York City failed to meet the publishers sales expectations in 2005 and the True Crime IP was put on hold for a number of years, cancelling the third game that was in development.
In 2008, United Front Games started developing a new open world action-adventure game set in Hong Kong. Originally planned to be an original IP, Activision decided that the True Crime name would help sell the concept, acquired it, and named it True Crime: Hong Kong.
It was unveiled in 2009, and subsequently delayed in 2011 to improve development time – but after a month the game was cancelled. Activision claimed the game just wasn’t good enough to compete against other open world games.
United Front Games had a near-complete game on their hands and, in 2011, Square Enix picked up the publishing rights for the game. Out was Activision’s True Crime brand and the publisher revealed that the game was retitled as Sleeping Dogs, followed by a .
Of course, this caused some bickering between the publishers with Activision stating that the market had changed so much since they greenlit the project and Square Enix happily ridiculing the new IP that had so much potential.
But it looks like Square Enix’s gut instincts were right, with the game scoring an average of 80 on Metacritic on all formats from critics.
If this little history lesson has gotten you curious about the Hong Kong set title, then you can pick it up in stores today on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

The retail chain is looking to make DLC purchasers easier for consumers
[h=3]GameStop[/h]gamestop.com
Gamestop is ready to launch a new system that allows consumers to purchase and download downloadable content (DLC) for Xbox 360 titles in store. Currently, when a user buys DLC, they received a code that can be redeemed on their home consoles. GameStop president Tony Bartel told Wired that the new system would bypass that step.
"There was a lot of friction about putting in a [25-digit] code… with a controller," Bartel told Wired.
The system will send an email after users purchase the content in store. By using their smartphone and clicking on that link, users can begin the download process on their consoles. The new system is GameStop-exclusive and while it only works with Xbox 360 content, Bartel sees it moving to other platforms in the future.
"It's GameStop-specific, and it works with any code," he says of the system. "We can take any of our partners and put them on our platform."

PS4 and Xbox 720 do not exist. Got that?
Just because the president of EA Labels Frank Gibeau says he’s seen them, that doesn’t mean they’re real.
"I've seen both of them", he told a Gamescom audience, as reported by GameSpot. "Ten years ago we used to measure our market in terms of 200 million people. Now we are at a billion people playing games and we have a straight line view on two billion.”
But that doesn’t mean they’re real. We think Frank Gibeau is real. But PS4 and Xbox 720 are not real. The developers working on launch games for them are not real. Microsoft and Sony’s hardware developers are not real.
The component manufacturers making the innards ARE real, but the components they are making are NOT. Unless they are currently on the market or installed in existing machines. Then they’re real. But the ones being made for the new consoles aren’t. They’re not real. Understood?
Even when Microsoft talks about the New Xbox, that doesn’t mean it’s real.
PS4 and Xbox 720 are not real until Sony and Microsoft say they’re real, OK? And with new games and new IP being announced for PS3 by Sony on Tuesday, PS4 won’t be real for some time yet.
As far as MCV understands, Xbox 720 won’t be real until some time in Q2 of 2013. Probably around E3.
To be clear, we are currently in a state of unrealness. This unrealness will in an instant transform into realness when an official press statement confirming the real existence of new consoles arrives in your inbox. That won’t happen yet as neither PS4 or Xbox 720 are real.
UPDATE: MCV contacted EA to confirm a couple of points in this story. When asked if Frank Gibeau is real we were told "Frank is definitely real and a great person". So, that's that cleared up. However, when probed on the fictional PS4 and Xbox 720 we were told that EA had no comment. Perhaps it's corporate policy to not comment on fictional devices? The truth is, we're not sure what its policy on fictional devices is. Not that PS4 and Xbox 720 are real, of course.

It's been almost a year since Thrustmaster rolled out its first replica Ferrari 458 Italia racing wheel and pedal set for Xbox 360, and the company's finally outed its successor: the Ferrari Vibration GT Cockpit 458 Italia Edition. Like its elder, the GT Cockpit has an 11.2-inch replica of the Ferrari 458 Italia's steering wheel, with A,B, X and Y buttons in place of turn signals and an Engine Start button that's actually a d-pad. It also sports brushed metal paddle shifters and 16-bit resolution to ensure a realistic digital driving experience. However, the new wheel is attached to a base sporting a pair of stamped steel pedals via an adjustable steering column. The whole thing has metal underpinnings and weighs 22 pounds to provide stability as you virtually race around Sebring or Laguna Seca. Plus, it's foldable, so you can easily stow it out of the way when you're not doing your best Stig impersonation.

August 16th, 2012, 00:14 Posted By: wraggster
Resident Evil is going through an identity crisis.
Resident Evil 4 remains the series’ critical high point. Atmospheric and creepy, it was Capcom at its finest and was worshiped by critics (Metacritic score: 96) and fans alike. Resident Evil 5, on the other hand, played down the horror in favour of action set-pieces and co-op gameplay. Still very good, but not exactly what fans had come to expect (its Metacritic was 84).
So what exactly is Resident Evil 6? A survival horror? An action shooter? Or something new entirely?
Well, actually, it is all three.
RESIDENT CARE
“When we looked at Resident Evil 5, we reached a great number of sales but there were comments from fans that said it was too action based, they wanted a return to the old Resident Evil,” says Michael Pattison, Capcom’s SVP marketing North America and Europe.
“I think the developer took a lot of that to heart. When we went into the RE6 planning, we did a very deep post-mortem on RE5. We obviously want Resident Evil to reach the maximum number of consumers, but we’re never going to take out the heart of Resident Evil.
“It’s important that we retain that fan base because they are the core of the sales. They define what that product is. We look to just tick as many boxes as possible and I sat down with a checklist from a marketing perspective on where we should go and the developers came back with exact same list. They’ve almost over-delivered in that respect where you’ve got the three different storylines each offering something unique to different types of fans and newcomers to the franchise.”
Resident Evil 6 launches on October 2nd and features three separate (although interlinking) stories. The first, featuring Leon S Kennedy of Resident Evil 2 and 4, is the traditional survival horror that fans have been calling out for. Chris Redfield’s story (of Resident Evil, RE:?Code Veronica and RE5) is more action packed, with lots of hiding behind cover and shooting. Meanwhile a third storyline, starring new hero Jake Muller, is something entirely different, with intense chases, dramatic set-pieces (akin to Uncharted) and melee-based combat.
And then there’s various multiplayer options, a Mercenaries mode, the chance to play as the monsters and a fourth story – starring femme fatale Ada Wong – that can be unlocked when the game is finished. It is probably the biggest and most ambitious shooter out this Christmas.
“It’s a way to try to satisfy everyone,” adds Pattison. “You can be concerned sometimes when you go out to try and satisfy everyone that you end up satisfying no one. But I truly believe that we’re going to satisfy the largest audience than we ever have with this franchise.”
Retail clearly agrees. Last week MCV asked our Retail Advisory Board to pick their top games for Q4, and aside from the obvious Call of Duty and FIFA, Resident Evil 6 was the only game to be picked by every respondent – High Street specialists, online retailers and supermarkets. And these are the companies that will play a crucial role in how big Resident Evil 6 becomes.
Pattison adds: “The environment is tough, particularly at retail. I think we’re in an interesting phase between retail and digital. I don’t think the world is ready for complete download takeover. We absolutely still need retail. And looking at the line-ups, not just from Capcom, there’s some bloody good games coming. You can’t all be doom and gloom.”
HORROR SHOW
The reveal of Resident Evil 6 was notable for being unlike anything that Capcom has done before. Rather than revealed on stage at E3 or Gamescom, the game was first teased with a viral campaign before a trailer – depicting an almost finished game – was shown to the public in January. Capcom even announced a released date. This was more akin to an Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty announcement.
“Historically we’ve been wedded to physical events,” says Pattison. “We’ve got a lot of good marketers at Capcom who understand social media and can use those tools to reach a large audience. It took a while to convince our Japanese colleagues that we didn’t need somebody on stage, standing up in front of all the press making an announcement, that we could actually do this via YouTube and via the social networks and spend some money around it.
“Recently, we’ve seen that people are trending more towards fewer, bigger hits rather than long campaigns. That’s something we really took on board with RE6, to have something engaging to say and we want to do that every time we say something about the product.”
In fact, Pattison feels that long-running campaigns can be off-putting. “If you’re just on repeat, showing the same things all the time, people get weary, particularly if it’s a long protracted campaign. People have shorter attention spans these days so you’ve got to go in hard and have something exciting to say.”
MOVIE MAGIC
It is a big year for Resident Evil. RE6 is the third new Resident Evil game out this year following January’s 3DS release – Resident Evil Revelations, and the co-op action spin-off game Resident Evil:?Operation Raccoon City. Meanwhile, the smash hit Resident Evil movie franchise also returns for a fifth outing this September.
The movies’ storylines are separate from the video games. Yet surely there are marketing tie-up opportunities between the two?
Pattison continues: “There’s obviously overlap of fans who will watch Resident Evil and will play Resident Evil.
“We want to cross-pollinate, which is a great buzzword. People have arrived at the Resident Evil franchise through different doors and whether they feel they sit together well is a different matter but it’s still part of the overall universe. We like to try and get people to buy into Resident Evil as a brand, not just as a video game.”
And this is where Resident Evil’s mixed personalities can actually be its strength. It is a massively successful action/horror movie franchise, an acclaimed survival horror video game and probably the most successful action series to come from Japan. If Resident Evil 6 can really please all of these fans – which is clearly its aim – then it is potentially the most lucrative game in the series to-date.

Two more of the "legends" in 007 Legends have been announced. Toby Stephens will reprise the role of Gustav Graves in a mission based on 2002'sDie Another Day, and Carey Lowell comes back as Agent Pam Bouvier in a mission from Licence to Kill.
Of course, given the nature of this game, both of them will be interacting with Daniel Craig-style Bond instead of Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton, respectively. That means that they'll be preoccupied with Bond's new appearance, and will distractedly pester him with questions instead of going about their business. Look forward to it!

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 launches on November 13, it will feature built-in tools that allow players on any platform to livestream their multiplayer sessions to the web. No capture boxes or special software required.
For competitive video game commentators – or anyone who wants to shoutcast a match of Call of Duty – Black Ops 2 also features a slew of in-game options to control the action as it happens live or from watching a replay. You can adjust items on the HUD, add scoreboards and user name cards, jump to the map showing all users, listen in on team mics to hear their strategies, and more.
If you're worried the tools could help opponents get the upper hand, Treyarch has thought about it. Players in the middle of a game won't hear the shoutcasters do their thing and the online time delay is such that it wouldn't make a difference if someone you were playing against was watching the same match. There's also the ability to turn off streaming for certain kinds of matches – like a tournament you've organized.
The tools both embrace the growing world of eSports and advance the possibilities of gaming. In-game streaming and shoutcasting tools have made it to the top of our "every game should have this feature" list. And you don't need a pair of commentators explaining the on-screen action in order to make use of the new feature, you could just stream it worldwide at any time for any reason.
Joystiq had a chance to play with the feature and discuss its tools with Treyarch advisor (and pro shoutcaster) Mike Rufail as a group of journalists battled it out in a multi-team deathmatch on the Yemen map in Black Ops 2. Watch themayhem (and why I shouldn't quit my day job) above.

Dontnod and Capcom's collaboration on Remember Me is a relatively recent occurrence. The two came together in the last year, following a falling out between Dontnod and Sony in February 2011. Remember Me (formerly Adrift) was originally headed exclusively to Sony's consoles, it seems, given a publishing arrangement that the two companies worked out in February 2010.
"The Sony deal was signed February 2010 and ended a year later. We were totally independent, and had no publisher, but we were looking for one," Dontnod creative lead Jean-Maxime Moris told Joystiq in an interview this morning. So, what went wrong?
"I won't go into too many details, but basically they cancelled a bunch of projects, and we were just one of them," Moris said. "It felt bad at the time. And now, in retrospect, it's just one step toward where we are now."
Moris added that he's "very happy" to be working with Capcom today, and thatRemember Me is a good fit for "the Capcom DNA." And as for what went down with Sony? "It's just the way things went."

EA has said it's not currently planning to introduce women's football to theFIFA series.
Including female players could open up a whole new target market, perhaps most significantly in the US, where women's football is increasingly popular and the national team is consistently successful.
But FIFA executive producer David Rutter told CVG: "We get literally thousands upon thousands of suggestions from our fans for new features and we have to evaluate those suggestions, such as the inclusion of female players in the game, against our resources, priorities and overall fan feedback. At present, we don't have plans to include female players in the game."We got in touch with EA after being pointed toward a Change.org petition which argues that excluding female characters from FIFA "makes no sense". The online petition has been signed by over 2,800 supporters.
"The US Department of State says that over 40% of soccer players in the US are girls," it reads.
"By offering just men's teams as playable options on FIFA we're not only denying these girls a chance to relate to the characters they play on a videogame, but we're also wasting a great opportunity to encourage those same girls to be who they are, develop their passion, motivation and promote a healthy image and relation between women and sports.
"Young girls can't be portrayed by male videogame characters. We want them to be able see themselves in the games they love, as the soccer players that inspire them. Don't restrict our choices to Messi, Rooney, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo. Allow girls and boys to play with Wambach, Sawa, Morgan, Cristiane, Miyama, Rapinoe, Marta, Hope Solo, Mia Hamm, Birgit Prinz."
European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said last year that female consumers are the "untapped holy grail" for game publishers.
EA has confirmed a FIFA 13 release date of September 25 in the US and September 28 in the UK and Europe.

Fresh from Microsoft Research is and decrease the error in a Kinect. Bonus: the technique only requires a motor with an offset weight, or just an oversized version of the vibration motor found in a pager.
Being the first of its kind of commodity 3D depth sensors, the tracking on a Kinect really isn’t that good. In every Kinect demo we’ve ever seen, there are always errors in the 3D tracking or missing data in the point cloud. The Shake ‘n’ Sense, as Microsoft Research calls it, does away with these problems simply by vibrating the IR projector and camera with a single motor.
In addition to getting high quality point clouds from a Kinect, this technique also allows for multiple Kinects to be used in the same room. In the video (and title pic for this post), you can see a guy walking around a room filled with beach balls in 3D, captured from an array of four Kinects.
This opens up the doors to a whole lot of builds that were impossible with the current iteration of the Kinect, but we’re thinking this is far too easy and too clever not to be though of before. We’d love to see some independent verification of this technique, so if you’ve got a Kinect project sitting around, strap a motor onto it, make a video andsend it in.

SuperDaE who back in July posted leaked images of the Durango development kit, which according to industry sources was the real thing and for those of you not sure, Durango is rumoured to be the next Xbox Development Kit. Well SuperDaE is back and has sold the Xbox Durango Development Kit on Ebay for a cool $20,000, there was a total of 43 Bids, it does make you wonder if Microsoft was one of the bidders buying its Kit back before others can spill the beans on the kit.
Heres a photo of the Dev Kit:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI...#ht_500wt_1232
Heres what Digital Foundry posted about the initial Leaked Photos:
The devkit itself is an anonymous-looking black box, said by one next-gen developer to contain parts that have much in common with a modern "standard gaming PC". The shots depict a dashboard reminiscent of the current Xbox 360 test kit launcher, featuring a basic compiled program, dubbed "D3D11Game1" along with "NuiView" - which on 360 at least is a simple tool for rendering camera views and data from an attached Kinect peripheral. No next-gen Kinect hardware photos have yet to surface, but it is said to be considerably revised from the existing Xbox 360/PC peripheral.

Gears of War: Judgment creative lead Adrian Chmielarz exited Poland-based Epic Games subsidiary People Can Fly this past week. In fact, a trio of management is out at the studio. Epic Games president Mike Capps confirmed the news in a prepared statement: "Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki have parted ways with People Can Fly and Epic Games in order to pursue other opportunities, which they will announce of their own accord. Over the past decade, they have been instrumental in building People Can Fly into the talented team that it is today. We wish them well in their future endeavors. People Can Fly remains excited to release Gears of War: Judgment to fans early next year." Chmielarz also reassured fans via Twitter that Judgment is "in great hands," and that we'll hear more about where he's headed next "soon enough." No word on the other two gentlemen, unfortunately, but it sounds like a group effort if you ask us. We're in Europe all this week, which is where Poland is based, so we're hoping to stumble upon his secret plans.

During a demo of NBA 2K13 yesterday, 2K Sports representatives showed off a new feature exclusive to the Xbox 360 version of NBA 2K13: Kinect voice commands. These commands can be used for simple things like telling a player to move to the post, as well as more advanced commands like calling isolation plays for specific ballers. Cursing at Kinect is a feature, but it'll net you a foul in-game.
The Kinect features will only be available when playing against the AI in NBA 2K13 – no Kinect voice commands in online and local multiplayer. 2K Games reps said that it didn't make sense from both a technological and gameplay standpoint. In local multiplayer, there'd be no way to determine who is who; using Kinect voice commands online would bog down the experience in needless lag.
As for PS Move support on the PS3, 2K Games reps told me that feature would not make a return this year. PS Move support made its debut in NBA 2K12, unveiled by none other than Kobe Bryant during an E3 2011 presentation.
