Tomonobu Itagaki's Valhalla Game Studios is developing Devil's Third for more than just "home consoles and PC," says Valhalla CEO Satoshi Kanematsu. The studio is also crafting the game for "a wide range of digital devices," as Kanematsu explains in a letter posted to the studio's site.
What are "digital devices," pray tell? That's a good question – perhaps handhelds like the Vita and 3DS, perhaps mobile devices – we're not sure just yet. But Kanematsu doesn't stop there. "We are also looking beyond the boundaries of video games and plan to work with other various forms of media, including manga, novels, animation and film, to create a blockbuster franchise," he says. Sounds like ex-THQ buddy Danny Bilson and his "transmedia" message may've rubbed off on Valhalla.
Devil's Third is a horror title being produced by Valhalla Games independently, having recently broken away from publisher THQ and retained the rights to the IP.

If you're going to give away nearly two gigs of extra content for your wildly successful game, you may as well give away the soundtrack that underscores it, right? The seven-song soundtrack to Mass Effect 3's Extended Cut DLC is now available for free directly from BioWare, provided you have an Origin or BioWare Social network login.
Composed by Sam Hulick, the album also comes packed with this note from The Mass Effect Team:
"It has been a long journey - for Shepard and for the team here at BioWare - and like Shepard, we couldn't have done it alone. The Mass Effect trilogy began as a vision of a small team, but over the years it has grown. That growth has been fueled and shaped by the feedback and support of our player community. Thank you for joining us on this journey, and we look forward to sharing further adventures with you in the Mass Effect universe."

Halo 4's iteration of the Forge map editor is currently under development atCertain Affinity, the development studio responsible for Age of Booty, Crimson Alliance and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary's multiplayer. The announcement was made during a presentation at Rooster Teeth's second annual RTX event in Austin, TX.
While a wide breadth of changes and additions have been made to the Forge editor, most interesting are the "Player Trait Zones," which allow map builders to modify the characteristics of any players that enter the effected area, changing the height of their jumps, the speed at which they run, etc. It's even possible to reverse the gravity in a given area by using "Grav Volume" field.
Enhancements have also been made to the objects that can be placed by users: Elements can now be locked in place, magnetized and more efficiently duplicated. The editor's lighting system has also been overhauled; objects placed now cast and receive shadows normally. Finally, a map editor capable of bringing our upside-down film noir Halo dreams to life.

The popular Modern Warfare 2 airport map, Terminal, will come to Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360 on July 17 for Elite members and July 18 for non-Elites, but free for everyone, regardless of digitized classist regulations.
Earlier this week Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin outed Terminal for Modern Warfare 3, but couldn't provide a solid release date. Terminal exists outside of the Elite content drop schedule, and its PS3 and PC release dates are still to-be-decided, Rubin tweets.

Both the PS4 and Xbox 720 will fail if they do not reject physical media in favour of digital distribution, the co-founder of Codemasters has boldly claimed.
In what amounts to a scathing attack on games retail, David Darling stated: “Sony and Microsoft cannot let the retailers dictate game prices going forwards if they want to break free from the current over-priced model, their next consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 need to be digital only, or they will fail.
“Consoles have become like dinosaurs heading for extinction as their natural retail habitat begins to change. These ancient beasts must now adapt to a new environment where platforms like Steam, Facebook and Apple’s App Store are pushing innovation.
“The industry is transitioning from boxed to digital games. Physical media like DVD is dying out and gaming is rapidly moving to digital distribution. If hardware manufacturers such as Sony and Microsoft do not manage this transition soon, they will be overtaken and left behind by companies who are embracing digital distribution wholly and completely.
“If the next generation consoles have media drives like DVD to keep distributors and retailers happy so they can sell physical product this will make the machines uncompetitive. They will not be able to compete on price. The retailers will say to Sony and Microsoft “you can’t sell game X at retail for $60 and then sell it in your App Store for $2.” However, console-makers will need to sell games for $2 or else they will not be competitive with Apple.”
What must not be forgotten, however, is that Darling does have a vested interested – he is currently the CEO of digital games firm Kwalee.
Why Darling believes that big-budget core games and smaller-scale digital titles can co-exist is uncertain. He also does not address the fact that the type of software that is currently predominant on console would take an age for consumers to download.
Indeed, he even attacks those who may still harbour a preference for disc-based games.
“Luddites are always resistant to change,” he adds. “In the 1812 the new technology they didn’t like was the mechanised weaving loom. In 1986 it was the CD when they preferred old vinyl music records.
“Today there is resistance to the idea that physical media, such as DVD, and its retailers will disappear completely and give way to digital distribution. But changes are happening very quickly.
What is true, however, is that publishers will need to find a way to compete on price. Yes, there will always be consumers willing to pay £50 to play the big triple-A titles. But they are likely to become an increasing minority.
Next-gen consoles certainly need to embrace more flexible pricing models if they wish to grow the core market.

[source: xbmc.org] As you should all know by now, Team XBMC does not maintain a build for the original Xbox. With that said, a few valiant souls have continued to port over some of the more beneficial lines of XBMC code and done other bug fixing the keep the aging Xbox as a valid option for many people out there. To this day, though more than 10 years old, the Xbox 1 remains one of the best boxes in the world for gaming, pictures, and SD video playback. Unfortunately, the dev team at our sister site XBMC4Xbox is currently dealing with some hosting problems. So for now, those of you still benefitting from your old Xbox may find them at their new site xbmc4xbox.org.uk until the hosting problems have been resolved. Plus, if you are still updating your old Xbox, it may be worth noting that their donation page is only a click away.

modrobert writes: "hitman43 is reporting progress by ModControl.Com, CodeXecution.Com and Konsolen-junkies.de united in a team effort which successfully decrypted the 16MB NAND flash in Xbox 360 consoles with the Corona motherboard so far and are currently developing a free hack supporting any old RGH (Reset Glitch Hack) hardware. An interesting screenshot from the 360 flash dump tool can be found here. They have deliberately chosen to label it 'RGH v2.0' in a valiant attempt to end (or troll?) the commercially motivated RGH confusion regarding version numbers claimed by certain products."

Spelunky, an Xbox Live Arcade revamp of a free PC indie game, straddles the line between insurmountable addiction and a precise extractor of self-hatred. Like other rare indie gems, such as Metanet's N series, Spelunky is equal parts diabolical and ingenious.
The concept is simple: explore worlds filled with treacherous obstacles while collecting treasures and attempting to survive. You start the game with a standard whip along with a few climbing ropes and bombs, which are used to carve out a path to the level's exit. Each randomly generated level is filled with traps, enemies, and environmental disasters awaiting your unnamed adventurer. Survival may be the primary goal, but Spelunky's secondary objective is to make players regret the follies of poor split-second decisions.
It's the kind of experience you hate yourself for loving, but love it you shall.

July 4th, 2012, 23:46 Posted By: wraggster
In hindsight, SmartGlass was Microsoft’s most significant announcement at E3 this year.
Buried between key core games and gut-rumbling gunfire demos, and itself presented with too-cheesy catchphrases, SmartGlass at the time felt like the
now typical ‘non-games moment’ during the Xbox presentation.
Yet in the wake of further announcements the strategy for this new gimmick has become transparent, rather than an opaque nod to the growing tablet market.
In LA at the start of June, SmartGlass seemed like a token gesture to the principle of the ‘second screen’ – the phrase given to describe how consumers frequently have extra devices like a smartphone, laptop or tablet while they are watching TV or playing video games.
But Microsoft last week revealed its iPad rival Surface and separately unveiled plans to let the same apps and content run between Windows itself and its smartphones variant.
And with that it all slots into place: Microsoft simply isn’t going to let its HDTV games business get smashed in as people start to favour portable devices.
BULLETPROOF GLASS
So what does SmartGlass do? To go all buzzwordy: it acts a lot like glass itself, presumably hence the buzzwordy name. It can reflect what should be on your TV via streaming, or offers a window into complementary material.
At E3, the examples given were: watching part of a movie on a tablet while travelling, then picking up where you left off when switching to TV later on; having a second or third entry-point for the Xbox Music service; consulting a background guide to the mythos of something like Game of Thrones while it plays on the TV; and, for games, setting out playbook moves in a game like Madden using touch controls or just having the Halo Waypoint community running while you play the game proper.
Yes, some of that is pretty convoluted – but it’s also designed to offer convenience, re-adapting Xbox use to people’s behaviour patterns.
In a world of iPads, ultrabooks and Android phones, people behave differently around technology. Just ask Nintendo – its Wii U console is designed to address the same changes in the market.
“My own household is a tiny little example,” Xbox Europe VP Chris Lewis remarked to MCV at E3.
“My son always has his laptop open and his phone in his hand while he’s watching the football. I’m not just contriving that for this discussion, it’s constantly what he does. A lot of that is him just trash talking with his friends or texting or whatever, but the integration through Live particularly would give him a much richer experience.
“And we’re seeing that the appetite to have more than one screen open when you’re experiencing something is everywhere.”
Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer told MCV that SmartGlass is a way to let people access their Xbox while on the move – or in other words, let Microsoft follow people when they are away from their Xbox.
Players will then “think about that connection even when I’m out of the living room”, he said, so that they are “always connected to the entertainment they love”.
Microsoft falls back on this ‘entertainment’ crutch a lot, and it can too often ring hollow, but in this instance Spencer means Xbox Live being the ‘entertainment’, or the broadcaster if you will, but one no longer confined to one device.
“We’ve built up this service [in Xbox Live] that now exists on all these different screens that you have and we can use that persistent connection.”
Couple that with the recent announcement of the Surface tablet and bolstered game activity on Windows Phone, and the picture becomes very clear.
Microsoft knows that the market is moving on beyond the console, and moving onto devices it can never hope to dominate. And it has to follow. When an Xbox exec says “we’ll go wherever our users are”, that isn’t actually aspirational nonsense – it’s a concession to the fact that Microsoft’s users aren’t just users of Microsoft’s operating systems. They own
devices that have software from sworn enemies Apple and Google.
This is best summed up by something GameStop international VP Mike Mauler said to us at the show: “They even said the ‘i’ word.”
At E3 on stage, Microsoft said that SmartGlass will also come as an app that can be installed on iOS and Android devices as well as Windows Phone ones – the ultimate acknowledgement on how the market has changed. Accepting that, and marrying this new portable world with the established console one makes a lot of sense in that context.
SMART?FUTURE
Unfortunately, when we asked how exactly it will complement console games outside of the demo shown, Microsoft’s execs prefer to talk more broadly about how SmartGlass can
“enrich the whole experience rather than the stand-alone” for now.
That’s because, as Spencer admitted to us, things like the Halo and Madden demos are still just concepts for now.
Only one game, Ascend, has actually been announced for SmartGlass so far. But that’s partly because Microsoft knows it has to let developers play with the technology first. The firm has been down this route before after all.
Said Spencer: “At the launch of Kinect I stood up and I showed Kinect Sports and Kinectimals and Joy Ride and Dance Central.
“A couple of those franchise took off,” he said and, without saying it, alluded to the fact that not everything for Kinect did take off.
“I think of SmartGlass in a similar way for games – it’s going to evolve over the years as developers get their hands on the technology and build stuff.”
Certainly, Microsoft isn’t waiting around – the SDK for SmartGlass rolled out last week. Even if the content isn’t there yet, the concept is.

As seems to be becoming tradition for the series, Halo 4 will require quite a bit of storage to play. Specifically, Xbox.com notes that players will need "at least an 8GB USB flash drive or an Xbox 360 Hard Drive" in order to play Halo 4's multiplayer mode. Furthermore, the hard drive option is "highly recommended" for those seeking an "optimal" experience.
We've contacted Microsoft to see what differences there will be between each option – and exactly what is meant by the fairly all-encompassing term "multiplayer" – but, in the meantime, one thing is clear: in the off chance that you might want to play some Halo 4 multiplayer, you'll need some storage to do it.
Update: Microsoft has responded to our queries, noting that "Halo 4 will offer an optimal experience if played using a hard drive, but will deliver a visually impressive and immersive gameplay experience whether you use a hard drive or a flash storage device." Furthermore, as to which multiplayer modes require storage: All of them. Specifically, "the multiplayer modes the storage requirement applies to encompass all Xbox Live-enabled modes."

Terminal, the popular airport map from Modern Warfare 2, is heading toModern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin has revealed via a series of tweets. Better still, Rubin says Terminal will be free for everyone, existing outside of the Elite subscription model.
Rubin says Terminal is in Microsoft certification now and the release date and official confirmation may not go public until Thursday or Friday. The map isn't confirmed to hit Xbox 360 first, but that is still an option. It may even drop as a title update, rather than a separate batch of DLC. MP1st has compiled a few of Rubin's tweets in one place, but he's still at it on his own feed.

Early last year, we heard that Nexon was bringing its immensely popular free-to-play beat-em-up, Dungeon Fighter Online, to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, but the wait's been long and quiet since then. Now, finally, there's a light at the end of the tunnel: The game will arrive on July 13.
The full title is Dungeon Fighter Live: Fall of Hendon Myre, and it's a condensed version of the browser game that's claimed over 200 million players worldwide already. There will be three classes, as opposed to eight in the full game, but the XBLA title will have the added benefit of both local multiplayer and even offline play.
The game will also include new HD graphics and a new storyline, along with the crazy itemization and combo-driven action gameplay of the original.

If it never occurred to you to plug all kinds of peripherals into your ear cans -- including the media player making the sound -- a new patent from Redmond's brain trust might give you pause. The headphones are shown as a catch-all, with receiving spaces for snapping in devices like rechargeable battery packs, storage, Bluetooth or WiFi reception modules and media players -- such as the Zune-like one sketched in above. The headset could also have controls to operate those peripherals, as well as an optional boom mic and USB ports, according to the document. All this is claimed to allow for numerous configurations, letting you pimp your headset to fit your own needs, and interface with games, movies or music in various ways. If they ever get to market, you might start thinking of humble headphones as full-blown entertainment centers instead of mere accessories.

We sit down with the corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios to talk about all things Xbox
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]www.microsoft.com
Microsoft's E3 showing this year didn't offer any huge surprises, but the content to satisfy the core was certainly there. More importantly, from a global business viewpoint, Microsoft its continuing its march into living rooms everywhere. The company makes no bones about it - with Xbox TV, Music, Kinect integrations and more and more video partnerships, the Xbox platform is quickly becoming a well-rounded entertainment center for gamers and non-gamers alike.
Following the press conference, GamesIndustry International met with Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios, to discuss the evolving Xbox strategy, the competition, Halo 4, the role of Kinect and much more.
Q: What is your general reaction to your competitors this year? Nintendo was showing off the Wii U while Sony was showing Last of Us, Beyond, etc. What was your overall thinking on those two camps?
Phil Spencer: I think, to not not answer your question, it is worth noting that there is another competitor that is not here that has a developer's conference next week (after E3).
Q: Apple?
Phil Spencer: Right, so if we think about where our ambition is, our ambition is to create an entertainment platform for everyone on the planet. We think there are a couple keys; having unique content on our platform. We started off with Halo, but we obviously have a breadth of content on our platform from big core games to things like the Nike fitness program that we showed, to things like Dance Central and our sports offerings. It's a real breadth of content on the platform. Live and the connected service is pretty key to what we do.
The partnerships that we're able to drive I think are important. I'd like to point out Nike yet again; it's them talking about what we do as opposed to us talking about us. It's nice, really validating to have a worldwide brand like Nike come out and decide that this is the system that they want to go and innovate on and we can go and create something that is uniquely different.
"If you look at our top franchises in our first-party, they do incredibly well relative to other first-party franchises"
Phil Spencer
Q: Was there anything in the other conferences though that stood out for you? People have said that SmartGlass is a reaction to the Wii U tablet. Is there any truth to that?
Phil Spencer: No, our SmartGlass was driven by the fact that people use multiple devices at home to consume content. Whether they're watching TV with their laptop up or sitting with their phone while browsing the web, we could use the power of Live to connect all these devices in an intelligent way and turn your TV into a smart TV. Your specific question on the other press briefings, I went to EA, Ubisoft, Nintendo and Sony and ours. Things that I thought and I am more of a positive than a negative; things I liked were ZombiU, they were nice enough to let me play. I thought that game played very well, and I saw the use of another screen and how that would work.
I think their Pro Controller makes a lot of sense with the platform they've built. They are building a platform that is effectively a 360 when you think of graphical capability. Now they are really making an on-ramp for the back catalog of games that are on 360. It is easy for those games to move over the Wii U. They've moved the buttons around, and they've made a controller that feels familiar for 360 gamers, so I get why they are putting those pieces together. I would have loved to see Zelda or Metroid or some of my favorite Nintendo franchises, which I didn't see.
For Sony, Sony has a big first-party. I didn't get a sense of what all their first-party studios are working on, but I thought God of War looked good. It's a franchise I like, I love the character and I think they do a good job with that. We are here to create entertainment, and we look at E3 and really wanted to create a breadth of content there. I felt good about how we showed up to really think about young, old, male, and female. We have more gamers than we ever have, whether they are on their phone, tablet, PC or console. We really want to embrace that huge community of gamers out there.
Q: It's nice to hear you say you've enjoyed some of the stuff from your competitors. Sometimes executives won't admit that.
Phil Spencer: I don't know if Microsoft cares - I work for Microsoft after all - but I own a Vita, I own a Wii, I own a PS3, and I play a lot. At the core, I'm in this industry because of the content we create and the experiences. I think there are great experiences that come from all over. I don't try to claim that everything that is ever created is something that we touch, that would be somewhat ridiculous.
Q: You mention Sony first-party, and they are sort of renowned for their studio system. You oversee the studios for Microsoft. I guess the knock on 360 is that you don't have as many first-party IP. It is a few select franchises in Halo, Forza and Fable. Gears of War is Xbox-exclusive but is Epic's IP. People say "how come Microsoft is not creating more IP or doing something to bolster the studio system?"

Xbox 8, or perhaps Xbox ∞ (Xbox Infinity) could be the name of the successor to Xbox 360.
The speculation has arisen after Fusible reported that Microsoft had acquired two URLs – Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org.
Not only has it acquired them, but it fought to do so, winning two disputes with a Chinese resident who had already registered the pair. Microsoft has not, however, sought action against the Chinese owner of Xbox8.com.
Of course, with Windows 8 on the horizon, Xbox 8 may be nothing other than some sort of cross-compatibility. Or Microsoft could simply be protecting its IP.
Internal Microsoft documents have referred to the in-development system as both Xbox 720 and Durango. Xbox Loop has also been widely touted as a possible moniker.
Microsoft has also acquired XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTV.com and XboxCompanion.com. It is currently disputing the ownership of Xboxliverewards.com, Xboxsports.com, Xboxsmartglass.com and Xboxmusic.com.

The first playable demo for Resident Evil 6 is now available on Xbox Live for Xbox 360 owners.
Of course, you’re only able to access it if you both purchased a copy of Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma AND haven’t lost the DLC code that came on a slip inside the case.
The demo will be released on the PlayStation Network, but not until September 5th thanks to a timed exclusivity agreement between Capcom and Microsoft.
Fortunately there’s not that long to wait until the arrival of the main game itself, which hits Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on October 2nd.

DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson has criticised the lack of innovation present in many firstperson shooters today, believing that too few studios take the need for technical evolution seriously.
"The FPS is a very hardcore genre, and the hardcore crowd of the FPS is probably bigger than some other genres," he tells us. "And that crowd has extremely high demands on what the games are and how they develop.
"If they don't see some kind of new, if not revolutionary then at least evolutionary, step of rendering in every game they will start to lose interest. And I think that is what's happening. Because a lot of franchises out there don't take this seriously; to actually make sure that we don't just challenge ourselves on the gameplay aspect, or perhaps some other area like distribution method, but also how it [feels], how it looks and how it sounds.
"DICE has a strong history, for good and for bad, of doing this. We constantly bash ourselves and say, 'We could have done that better'. It might just be a rendering feature but in the end it adds up to the complete experience of what we're doing."
Troedsson points to the coming tech transition - both to new hardware and more powerful engines - and a move away from modern settings as temporary salves, but warns against using thematic switches in place of broader ambition.
"I think we're going to start seeing people moving away from the modern setting, because every now and again settings or themes start to get stale and then everyone jumps over," he continues. "Y'know, at some point dinosaurs are the hottest thing and everyone is making games with dinosaurs, but there are trends. It used to be WWII, and recently it's been the modern era and people are now moving towards near future.
"But it's a bit cheap to just say, 'Okay, we're going to switch and go back in time or into the future and that will be innovation'. It will definitely drive the franchise forward for whatever game, but it's not true innovation, it's more a thematic change that has a perceived value to the gamers out there. But as a developer you can only make so many games in one particular era, and then you personally start to get a bit bored with it."
That propensity toward trends at the mainstream end of the market, rather than a greater diversity of themes, is, of course, what many critics of the genre would point to as its major problem. But it's hard to begrudge big-budget teams' need to minimise risk in the face of a cripplingly conservative buying public. And while Troedsson acknowledges that more needs to be done, spectacle remains high on his list of priorites.
"I think it's our responsibility as game developers to always push ourselves when it comes to the experience of games," he concludes. "To always make sure that when we put games in the hands of consumers that we are proud of what we've done.
"I'm not saying we're going to build an FPS that will make you cry, or anything like that [laughs]. But we want people to be amazed when they look at our games. And I think this is more important than becoming number one in whatever way you look at it - though naturally part of that comes from a very high level of competitiveness here within DICE. We want to make the best game that we can, and we want that game to be the best one on the market. If gamers think that, then we've done our job. We're not there yet, but we're working on it."
