Microsoft will no longer be publishing Oddworld: Stranger's WrathHD, though developer Just Add Water still intends to bring the game to Xbox 360.
Just Add Water boss Stewart Gilray moved to clarify comments made earlier today that suggested the game had been cancelled entirely.
“What I said was that we’d given up on Microsoft, not that we’d given up on 360,” he said. “What I meant was that we’d given up on Microsoft doing anything with it.”
Gilray explained that Microsoft approached the developer two weeks after the game was announced for PS3, asking if it wanted to do a 360 version. JAW said yes and showed Microsoft comparison shots of the first game (originally released on Xbox) and updated HD assets.
At that point, Gilray assumed everything was satisfactory and the project moved forward, until Microsoft reneged on its involvement.
“Just before Christmas, they came back and said that they didn’t want it because it’d already been on a Microsoft platform," Gilray explains. "We said, ‘Hang on a minute. We didn’t come to you. You approached us.’ They said, ‘Yeah, but politics here says [sic] that we don’t want it on XBLA.’”
Lorne Lanning, boss of the Oddworld series creator Oddworld Inhabitants, then spoke to Microsoft and was told that an alternative deal could be tabled, potentially bringing the game to Games On Demand as opposed to XBLA, but Microsoft again changed its mind when the $15 PSN price tag conflicted with GOD's $20 minimum pricing.
Microsoft subsequently added more objections to the game's appearance on Xbox Live, including the fact that the original had only sold 500,000 (GOD games must have sold one million units) and that it needed a MetaCritic rating of 80 per cent or higher. This latter point is moot, though, given the game currently stands at 88 per cent.
“We said, ‘We’ve been talking to you for over 15 months, now,’” a frustrated Gilray added. “‘We haven’t stalled. You’ve been stalling us. If you’d had come to us six months ago and said fine, we would have held back the PS3 version until the 360 version was ready.’”
JAW is now in negotiations with two other publishers and is considering adding additional content to the release.

SmartGlass Studio released to game developers and entertainment partners
Microsoft has released the SmartGlass SDK to game developers and entertainment parters, the company has announced.
SmartGlass was revealed at E3, and allows a user to use a tablet device to access additional content when watching a show or playing a game on their Xbox 360.
The SDK release is timed about right for Microsoft's timetable, which has SmartGlass content arriving in time for the holiday season.
Microsoft has said that all future first-party titles will include SmartGlass content.
The SDK includes SmartGlass Studio, a JavaScript Library, and sample code.

It's often hard to distinguish between fact and faction. But luckily sometimes companies make it far easier for us to tell.
Remember the “leaked” Xbox 720 roadmap document that emerged online at the weekend? Even MCV treated it with a pinch of salt. Well, it now looks more or less certain that its contents was very real.
VG247 reports that Microsoft has moved on two websites hosting the document and threatened them with legal proceedings unless it is removed. One, the site that broke the story Scribd, says it was asked to remove it by legal firm Covington & Burling LLP. A second, Czech tech portal ihned.cz, says it was contacted directly by Microsoft.
VG247 even reckons that “Microsoft are said to have claimed ownership of the document”, confirming its authenticity.
Details revealed by the leak include:
- A $299 hardware release in 2013
- A Kinect successor with better accuracy and four-player tracking
- Augmented reality and 3D glasses codenamed 'Fortaleza' for Kinect and motion gaming
- Talk of extra motion sensors in the home for gaming
- 'Three screen' experiences just like those shown at its E3 SmartGlass premiere earlier this month
- More options for hardware OEM manufacture, reducing platform costs for Microsoft
- An eventual transition to total cloud storage/streaming for Xbox content - but importantly with devices in the home needed to access that content
- More relationships with TV operators and content firms
More details can be found in the original story.

Motorola demanding royalties from sales of console and Windows operating system
The Xbox 360 has edged closer to a devastating sales ban in the US after Microsoft rejected a settlement with Motorola over a patent dispute,CVG reports.
The legal dispute centres on Motorola Mobility’s patented technology, ActiveSync, which is used by Microsoft in numerous devices such as the Xbox 360 slim, Windows 7, internet explorer and Windows media player.
The mobile firm had asked for a 2.25 per cent royalty on Xbox 360 sales and $0.5 per copy of its Windows operating system.
Judge David Shaw said in April that Microsoft should be handed a cease-and-desist order of sales of the Xbox 360 Slim in the US unless a settlement could be reached.
If the ban goes through, the console giant could also be barred from selling its system in Germany, after a court in the country ruled in favour of a ban. The verdict however will not come into effect until the US lawsuit is concluded.

Many of you might have read about a purported internal Microsoft strategy document that apparently "leaked" earlier this week, outlining its plans for the next Xbox system. The 56-page-long screed, dated August 2010, presciently mentioned Xbox SmartGlass, as well as Blu-ray support, 3D glasses, a focus on cloud-based gaming and a newly-improved Kinect system. Some news outlets ran the story, while others cried "fake!" claiming it didn't fit with Microsoft's traditional internal communications style and that some of the technical details within were borderline preposterous.Head on over to The Verge's report and you can attempt to make your own mind up.We held back and reached out to Microsoft for comment on the document's veracity a few days ago. Finally, a response has come through. A spokesperson for the platform holder wouldn't confirm or deny whether the document is legitimate but did offer us the following statement:"We understand there is great interest and anticipation for what comes next for Xbox and we are lucky to have customers who are so passionate about the platform."Today, there has never been a better time to own an Xbox 360 console. We have found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and we've re-invented the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships."We are continually thinking about the future of the platform and when we have something to share, we will."

If you like super cheap games and you don't care what year they were released, you should check out the Games on Demand sale Microsoft is running this week.
Games on Demand, for those who are unsure, is the section of the online Xbox Marketplace that sells full-retail Xbox 360 games as digital downloads. From now until June 25, 20 Games on Demand titles will be flogged for 75 percent off their usual price. Admittedly, they're a little on the old side, but there are some good games on the list and if you've not played one, $4.99 for a new Xbox 360 game is not a bad deal at all.
Here's list of games, all of which have been reduced from $20 to $4,99:
- Alone in the Dark
- Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII
- Bolt
- Bomberman Act: Zero
- Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
- Conan
- Dark Void
- FaceBreaker
- Kameo
- Meet The Robinsons
- Open Season
- Perfect Dark Zero
- Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
- Rockstar Table Tennis
- SEGA Superstars Tennis
- Surf's Up
- Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
- Tornado Outbreak
- Virtua Tennis 2009
- Viva Piñata Party Animals
MS says this sale is applicable to all Xbox Live regions where these titles are available.

XBLA's Summer of Arcade 2012 begins on July 18 with the HD-ified rebirth ofTony Hawk Pro Skater for 1200 MS Points ($15). The following week, Iron Galaxy's Angry Birds meets Boom Blox Kinect flinger Wreckateer arrives for 800 MS Points ($10), with Deadlight, Hybrid, and Dust: An Elysian Tail launching in the subsequent weeks, all for 1200 MS Points ($15) a pop.
Microsoft is offering an incentive (as always) to spur multiple Summer of Arcade purchases, giving those who snag "any three of the above titles" a free 400 MS Points ($5). From the look of things, that won't be too hard a sell.
Additionally, Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD is heading to PlayStation Network "a few weeks" after it launches on Xbox Live Arcade, but the rest of the Summer of Arcade games are exclusive to 360 (at least for now).

Sonic's apparently too fast for whoever moderates Xbox.com content. A listing for Sonic Adventure 2 has appeared on the official Xbox site, complete with a handful of screenshots (one with some PlayStation buttons!) and a description. The listing was pulled from the US Xbox.com, though the UK version has yet to be taken down. No downloads are available but, given that the port doesn't even officially exist yet, that's not surprising.
The listing claims the game features all of Sonic Adventure 2's original content, Chao Gardens and all, now in high definition. Given Sega has already re-released the original Sonic Adventure, it only makes sense that the sequel would be as well. We've contacted Sega to learn more.

EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau is a big fan of Microsoft's SmartGlass technology
[h=3]Electronic Arts[/h]www.ea.com
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]www.microsoft.com
The general consensus from most of the people we've talked with in the industry is that Xbox SmartGlass is a very smart move for Microsoft. Publishers seem genuinely excited by it (almost more so than by Wii U - though, that's purely anecdotal) and this was perhaps best exemplified by EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau who could hardly contain his enthusiasm for SmartGlass during E3.
"We love SmartGlass. I think it's a killer initiative. I really like it a lot," he toldGamesIndustry International. "It ties into what we're trying to do as a company. What we're trying to do as a developer of games is - we're looking at multi-screen environments as being really key in what's happening in gaming. You play games on your mobile. You play games on your PC. You play games on your console. So giving people more access points through multiple screens is a great thing."
EA Sports' Madden franchise was one of the few actual gaming examples used to illustrate SmartGlass during the Microsoft E3 briefing.
"It does definitely put positioning pressure on Nintendo because you don't have to buy a new system"
Frank Gibeau
"Having SmartGlass capabilities, where it can talk between machines in a consistent way is fantastic, so we think there's a lot of innovation and the Madden example that they showed is just scratching the surface of play calling, play construction," Gibeau said. "You can imagine being able to do things in a shooter, where you're calling in command modes or squad based commands. So I think it's a great idea, the fact that they're going to standardize an API that we can write to, so we can make it a seamless experience for the customer, whether it's a Windows Phone, an Android, or an iOS is great."
EA Sports head Andrew Wilson also sounded off on the importance of SmartGlass to us.
"I think it's very important for a couple of reasons. SmartGlass will bring in a whole new audience to gaming, but with respect to SmartGlass integration with a console experience it is changing the way people interact with consoles. If you look at Madden or FIFA this year, they have a series of multi-screen applications that allow you to manage your connected career or manage your FIFA Ultimate team while you're in front of the screen or while you're away from the screen. What that's enabling is people to engage in a world that's very, very important to them that they're very passionate about even while they're away from their 60-inch television. So when we look at the future and what Microsoft is planning to do at an API and SDK level that only makes our job easier to deliver a gameplay schema that's absolutely prevalent in the way gamers play today," he said.

Is it genuine? Is it fake? Or so old as to be completely irrelevant? After first getting an early airing at the beginning of May on a little-known website with no media follow-up, the "Xbox 720" document has finally been distributed publicly in all its 56-page glory, offering what is apparently an intriguing glimpse of the future of the entire Xbox brand.
We see connectivity with other devices, we see the evolution of the platform into an all-encompassing media brand, we see sci-fi style augmented reality glasses cropping up in 2014, and finally a transition to full cloud streaming gameplay - and what could be interpreted as the end of consoles as we know it.
"Next-gen tech, transmedia gaming, augmented reality concepts and the end of the console as we know it - the Xbox 720 'leak' strains credibility somewhat but offers some interesting ideas"
At the time we first saw snippets of the original doc, we dismissed it as a hoax. As visionary as certain aspects were, many elements of the basic specs being discussed simply didn't stack up from a technical perspective - and to be brutally thank, they still don't. Beyond the vision, the spec sheet itself makes very little sense whatsoever.
With the actual 56-page Powerpoint file now leaked publicly and the additional notes this give us, it now seems more likely that the presentation is authentic, but also very, very old - dating from summer 2010. The focus is far more on ideas and the value of the overall offering presented in marketing terms rather than providing much in the way of hard data on what is planned for the technical make-up of the new machine. It is perhaps telling that of the 56 pages in the presentation, only one of them details the core technology underpinning the whole exercise, with nebulous specs and metrics that mostly seem to be plucked out of thin air. The documents discuss a $2,000 PC in a $300 box for the living room, but this is somewhat at odds with the actual hardware being proposed.

Bethesda has announced that the Doom 3 BFG Edition will launch on October 16, 2012 in North America and October 19 in Europe. The re-release of id Software's shooter will include the Doom 3 base game, the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack as well as seven additional 'Lost' levels.
This marks the first time Doom 3 will be made available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, giving a potentially new audience the chance to play one of the scariest games in recent memory. With the new version, you also won't need to worry about dealing with an irritating flashlight mechanic, as the BFG Edition mounts a flashlight on your character's armor. In the original version of the game, you had to actually switch between your flashlight and your guns, so you couldn't use both at once

The power of the IGN community strikes again! This time, news comes from NKilburne, who has informed us that both Walmart and Amazon have posted new information about the upcoming PlayStation Vita exclusive Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified.
First off, its price. Both Amazon and Walmart have Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified listed as costing $49.96, officially making it the most expensive game on the platform (along with Uncharted: Golden Abyss' original price). Unfortunately, its release date is marked as December 31, 2012, no doubt a placeholder.

Myth #1: games are expensive. Sure, the ones you buy in boxes are, but the ones you can buy via Xbox Live, aren't. 1200 MS points works out at just over £10. Myth #2: XBLA games are all throw-away retro nonsense. No. Most are full, new games, and some are even AAA. So here are the 20 best, boldest, maddest and value-packed games on XBLA, and you can download most in a few minutes...
[h=3]1. Alan Wake's American Nightmare[/h]Price: 1200 Released: Feb 2012 Size: 1.33GB
Alan Wake's American Nightmare launch trailerWatch more videos like this01:53
Perhaps the best example of what XBLA is capable of. An Alan Wake sequel in all but name, it even improves on combat, pacing and story-telling. It sees Alan track down a serial killer willed to life by a small town. For 1200 points, it's a bargain, and better than most £40 adventure games.
[h=3]2. N+[/h]Price: 800 Released: Feb 2008 Size: 13.03MB
Originally a simple browser game, N+ puts you in charge of a stick-man ninja who can leap through basic levels and cling to walls. The key here is in the simple controls, which makes the jumping a joy. It might look simple, but it's highly addictive.
[h=3]3. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2[/h]Price: 800 Released: Jul 2008 Size: 40.36MB
First appearing as a mini-game in Project Gotham Racing, this a colourful twin-stick shooter with both multiplayer and competitive leaderboards. And we mean competitive...

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City has received a patch, one that addresses issues with the game's online matchmaking system and AI, as well as various other fixes, according to a post at Capcom Unity. The post didn't elaborate onhow exactly the matchmaking system has been changed, just that "matchmaking from invites" has been improved, as have ally and enemy AI behaviors.
More fundamental gameplay changes have also been made: Players can now pick up items while dashing and take cover immediately after a dive, for instance, and "various elements of weaponry, including ammo count, knockdown distance, weapon respawn times" have been changed in undisclosed ways. Peep the full list of changes after the break.

The British Board of Film Classification notes the BioShock Ultimate Rapture Edition as headed for a UK release.
The pack will include Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and all of the latter’s DLC, Eurogamer reports.
Without an official announcement from 2K Games, we’re left to guess on platform/pricing/release info; or if the offering will even reach other major territories outside the UK.
Bioshock Infinite, the franchise’s latest chapter, is slated to launch in February 2013.

Another supposed leak from Microsoft suggests that an Xbox tablet, called ‘Xbox Surface’, is very much in the works.
A detailed 56-page document claiming to detail the next generation of Xbox (codenamed Xbox 720) was revealed to the world yesterday. This was shortly followed by claims of a new Microsoft tablet with some sort of Xbox functionality.
Now Shifted2U claims to have yet another leaked document, this time detailing a new Xbox tablet device that includes a stationary base station.
If we for one moment suppose this information to be correct, the tablet element includes a seven-inch multi-touch LED screen with a resolution of 1280x720.
The stationary ‘central processing unit’, meanwhile, contains two IBM POWER7 SCMs with six active cores each with 256KB or cache, as well as 16MN of PSRAM and 5GB of DDR3 RAM and a custom 28nm AMD GPU.
Full Direct3D 11 support is also touted. The base unit also houses a 250GB optical disc drive with the option to expand via USB flash memory.
Audio out is expanded over Xbox 360 to include Dolby TrueHD, DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1, as well as LPCM, AAC and 22.2 surround.
Interesting, the document also details support for up to four wireless game controllers.
Does all the information reported in the last 24 hours point to a huge announcement from Microsoft or nothing more than an elaborate (and very well researched) hoax?

Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor will be released for $299 in 2013, will feature an upgraded Kinect, be backwards compatible, and support cloud streaming of games by 2015, according to a leaked internal document from 2010.
Originally posted on Scribd, the 52-page presentation - which has not been confirmed as genuine, but has since been removed at the behest of a legal firm which counts Microsoft among its clients - reveals an ambitious plan for the future of Xbox, one which does much to put Microsoft's recent emphasis on media services in context.
The Xbox 720, as the document calls it, will be a true all-in-one home entertainment box, with a pay TV service called XTV, a suite of media apps like Netflix and LastFM, native 3D support, and a permanent internet connection. It will have either six or eight CPU cores and 4GB of DDR memory, with the document promising a sixfold increase in performance over Xbox 360. A further three cores will be dedicated to backwards compatibility.
Multiple apps will be able to run at once: examples showed XBLA game Braid with a player's guide overlaid, and a ticker updating football scores while Gears Of War was being played.
The second generation Kinect sensor, meanwhile, will feature improved accuracy and voice recognition, stereo imaging, and support for up to four simultaneous players. By 2014 Xbox 720 will support Fortaleza AR Glasses, billed as a "breakthrough heads-up and hands-free device."
By 2015, Microsoft will offer streaming of full games via the cloud, with OnLive singled out as a possible acquisition target. There's mention, too, of multi-screen technology similar to SmartGlass, which Microsoft announced at E3 earlier this month - with Xbox 720 able to serve up games to any device in the house.
There's no smoking gun, of course, no proof that it's genuine - but if it's a fake, it's one of the most elaborate ones we've seen, a 52-page roadmap for the future of Xbox which seems consistent with Microsoft's strategy over the past two years.
Last week, former Sony exec Phil Harrison, who joined Microsoft two months ago, told us it was a sneak peek at Microsoft's vision for the coming years that compelled him to join the company's IEB division, and if the above is true, it's not hard to see why. The next big technological battle will be over the living room, and a $299 box which serves every media need in the modern household and is built to last for a decade would be an aggressive first move.
