Microsoft has renewed its trademark for Rare's long-dormant fighting series, Killer Instinct.
That alone is enough to have TJ Combo fans bouncing in their seats, but what's even more notable is that MS chose to announce this factvia its Xbox Live Arcade blog - which itself serves as a hint to the possible destination for a new Killer Instinct game."With all due respect to our friends in the media who like to frequent trademark sites, we thought we'd break this one ourselves," said MS.
"Our legal eagles have authorized us to say: We have either renewed or refiled a trademark application in various jurisdictions."
That was all MS was willing to say, but that's one mighty teaser. Could we be looking at another N64 re-release for XBLA (like Banjo Kazooie HD) or an all-new Killer Instinct?
Killer Instinct Gold - the N64 rendition of the arcade-going Killer Instinct 2 - was released in 1996 and we've had nothing since.
Which would you prefer; a HD re-release or a new game altogether?

September 17th, 2012, 22:35 Posted By: wraggster
We hear it every year, but early indications are that PES 2013 is genuinely the return to form that fans of the series have been craving.
“Even if you find learning Cruyff turns a turn-off, in PES 2013 there's one button that it's crucial to get to grips with, and that's R2/RT. This one button unlocks a whole new way of approaching PES, in both attack and defence, and almost singlehandedly makes 2013's offering the best of this console generation,” CVG writes, awarding the game 9.1/10.
“It's fairly simple stuff, although you will need to practice pretty hard to nail it. Either way, it makes the footy you play seem that little bit closer to the game you watch on a Super Sunday.
NowGamer also awarded a 9.1/10, stating: “Ladies and gentlemen, Pro Evolution Soccer is back. After years toiling in the wilderness, riddled with depression and self-doubt, the former king of videogame football has risen triumphantly to top the league right at the back end of this console generation. It’s been a hell of a ride.
“PES 2013 is so good that it’s almost like the other six Xbox 360 efforts didn’t exist, and this is, in fact, the continuation of the near-flawless heritage of PS2 and PSone games that completely shaped the way we play football on our consoles.
“The FIFA vs PES debate will rage, as always, but this year, no matter which one you plump for, you won’t be disappointed. If you’re hungry for the glory, the beauty and the magic of PES, though, you know what to do. It’s so good to have you back.”
OPM scored the game at 8/10, adding: “It’s a relief that a raft of incremental improvements ensure Konami’s 2013 outfit sneaks back into title contention.
“While familiar faults persist, PES 2013 marks the biggest step forward for the series on PS3. FIFA 13’s liquid animations and peerless physics system still give it the trophy-hoisting edge, but now PES’ unique strengths are refined enough to make it a genuinely worthwhile alternative. And hey, if nothing else, it’s probably the only footy game that’ll ever feature Motherwell as a Champions League outfit.”
IGN awarded it 8.5/10, saying: “It’s been a rough few years for Konami’s football franchise, but with PES 2013, it feels like things are back on track. It’s not ground breaking and it’s by no means perfect, but PES 2013 – more than its recent predecessors – feels like a game with a sense of identity and direction.
“Best of all, it offers a unique and challenging take on the beautiful game that’s distinctly different from its competition. After years of heartache for PES fans, it’s great to see Konami’s footy game finally beginning to step out from EA’s gargantuan shadow.”
PES 2013 is released in the UK on September 21st – one week ahead of EA’s FIFA 13.

The builds using a Kinect as a 3D scanner just keep getting better and better. A team of researchers from the University of Bristol have portablized the Kinect by adding a battery, single board Linux computer, and a WiFi adapter. With their Mobile Kinect project, it’s now a snap to automatically map an environment without lugging a laptop around, or just giving your next mobile robot an awesome vision system.
By making the Kinect portable, [Mike] et al made the Microsoft’s 3D imaging device much more capable than its present task of computing the volumetric space of the inside of a cabinet. The Reconstructme project allows the Kinect to be used as a hand-held 3D scanner and Kintinuous can be used to create a 3D model of entire houses, buildings, or caves.
There’s a lot that can be done with a portabalized, WiFi’d Kinect, and hopefully a few builds replicating the team’s work (except for replacing the Gumstix board with a Raspi) will be showing up on HaD shortly.

If the public’s appetite for full-price console releases is diminishing, then FIFA 13 is clearly doing something right.
EA has revealed that the FIFA 13 demo was downloaded a total of 1.99m people in its first three days of release. That’s 29 per cent up year-on-year compared to the opening three-day performance of the FIA 12 demo last year.
Furthermore, pre-orders for the full FIFA 13 release are up 37 per cent year-on-year (in Europe, 62 per cent in America) at over 875,000 copies.
FIFA 13 will be released in the UK on September 28th. Season Pass holders can begin downloading it on September 21st, with early access to FIFA 13 Ultimate Team beginning on September 18th.

The demo for EA's upcoming magical motion game, Harry Potter for Kinect, is available nowon Xbox Live. Go on. You know you want it.The demo, which demands just over 800Mb of your hard drive space, includes three sections from the full game.In Quidditch Match: Seeker you fly around on Harry's broomstick, trying to catch the Golden Snitch so you can win the most pointless imaginary sport ever devised. Even if you don't win, Dumbledore will probably say you did anyway, because he's totally biased towards Gryffindor.Journey to the Lestrange Vault sends you deep under Gringotts Bank where Helena Bonham-Carter keeps all her evil witch money. That's right, it's a mine cart chase! Everyone loves those. Finally, there's Destroy the Bridge, taken from the climactic battle in the Deathly Hallows, as brave Hogwarts pupils try to stop Voldemort's Death Eaters by blowing up the bridge to the school, apparently having forgotten that wizards can both fly and teleport. What are they teaching them? The full game, which appears in shops as if by magic on October 12th, offers minigames based on scenes from all eight movies, along with competitive and co-operative play.

The Xbox 360 version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will come out in Europe, Konami has told MCV, despite it's cancellation in Japan.
Earlier today Metal Gear developer Kojima Productions said that the Xbox 360 version of Revengeance would not be getting a Japanese release. The firm said there were 'various reasons' for it not happening. However, it's unlikely to have a massive impact on the game's success in the East as Microsoft's console has struggled to take-off in Japan.
But this will not impact the game's European launch, a Konami spokesperson has said. With the game still on-course for a February launch.
Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengeance is developed by Platinum Games, the studio behind critical hits including Bayonetta, Vanquish and MadWorld.

Blacklist creative director Maxime Béland calls previous installation a stepping stone
Splinter Cell: Conviction became a rescue job after a trouble development, Blacklist's creative director Maxime Béland has claimed.
Conviction was an action-oriented reboot of the popular stealth series, but many fans were upset with some of the changes.
"I'm not going to go into the whole story," Béland told Joystiq.
"But Conviction was kind of a rescue job for me."
He and another producer were "brought in because it wasn't going well. We changed the direction and kind of shipped the game in two years. So Conviction is very sweet and sour for me."

Bear in mind that many people are still unable to play Kinect because their living room is too small.
With that thought nestled firmly in your consciousness, take a look at one of Microsoft’s more ambitious gaming patents.
Spotted by CVG, it’s called the Environmental Display and uses advanced projection technology to project a full 3D environment across all four walls of an owner’s living room or bedroom.
A 3D depth camera similar to Kinect is used to monitor a player’s position within the area. However, this experience is amplified by the use of special 3D glasses that register the direction in which players are looking.
This information combined allows them to create additional 3D imagery inserted into the play area – augmented reality, in other words.
The patent describes it as "an immersive display environment is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user – the peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display”.
A lofty goal, you’ll surely agree. Undoubtedly the tech exists to make it all possible, but the struggle it will face will be an obvious one – how many potential owners have the requisite space to utilise such tech? And even if you’ve got the room, have you also got all the flat white walls needed for it to work properly?
The long and short of it is that we’d be happy with just the 3D shark and hover boards out of Back to the Future II.

An Xbox 360 version of zombie survival hit DayZ is looking a certainty.
Developer Bohemia Interactive is overseeing the official development of a standalone version of DayZ, which started life as a fan-made mod for its war shooter Arma II.
But logic dictates, it admits, that it would be sound business sense to aim beyond simply PC alone.
"Obviously DayZ, you've seen the success of Minecraft on Xbox Live Arcade [4m sales] and we'd probably be stupid not to try to do something similar,” producer Jan Kunt told Videogamer.
"We've always wanted to make games for consoles as well. Obviously we're a PC developer and have been for some years, but consoles have a huge market and you don't have so many problems with piracy.
"So it's really interesting. PC is what it is, and I personally think PC players will stay as PC players, but the console has more penetration into mainstream markets. People who wouldn't play games on PC, they buy an Xbox or PS3 as a medium to play games. So from that point of view it makes sense to go for consoles."
