The year of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 post-launch content is coming to a close, but it's going out with a bang (gun pun fully intended). The Chaos Pack – previously half-detailed – brings three Face Off maps and four Spec-Ops missions, as well as a new mode, dubbed "Special Ops Chaos Mode." It's a wave-based survival mode, albeit with a Spec-Ops twist. The whole shebang launches for Xbox 360 on August 9, with PS3 and PC versions launching later on.
In September, MW3 players on 360 get the "Final Assault" pack, which adds five multiplayer maps ("Gulch," "Offshore," "Boardwalk," "Decommission," and "Parish"), two of which are already available on 360. Again, this content arrives on PS3 and PC at a later (unknown) date. As Activision community blog One of Swords points out, Call of Duty's Elite season ends with more content than it originally promised, which seems pretty boss if you ask us. But don't go getting your precedents miscalibrated, as this may not be the case in future years.

Have you been playing Forza Motorsport 4 and thinking to yourself, "Man, I like Forza, but there just aren't enough cars in it." This news is for you then, because the August Playseat Car Pack has just been released. This baby comes packing 10 new cars, ranging from Chevy to Ford to Peugeot to Scion. There's also a 60s era Lincoln Continental with suicide doors, which you might recognize as the ride Morpheus picked up Neo in before The Matrix went sour. The movie, not the Toyota Matrix (which isn't in Forza 4, incidentally).
You can pick up the whole pack for $7, or individual cars for $3.

Ubisoft is bringing Beyond Good & Evil HD to the High Street as part of a new digital triple pack.
The publisher's Xbox Live Hits Collection features the acclaimed Michel Ancel adventure, as well as popular 2011 XBLA hits From Dust and Outland.
Now if all that sounds familiar, it's because the compilation wasoriginally outed back in January by Play.com.
The triple pack was meant to be released for both Xbox 360 and PS3 in March, but it never arrived.
This Xbox Live Hits Collection will be released for Xbox 360 on September 21st. Oddly, there's no word of the PS3 SKU.

[source: Team Xk3y @ twitter.com] Many people ask us if Xk3y is 'Live Safe'. While we maintain that using Xbox Live is at your own risk, thousands of people use Xbox Live with Xk3y, and he have not had any reports of banning due to Xk3y. A considerable effort went into profiling different drives to make sure Xk3y has accurate response times for all commands (unlike drives with hacked FW, which have considerably longer response times for many commands).
Note: EurAsia forum topic here. For more tech details regarding the drive response times, check our old exclusive interview with the xk3y developer (there's is an interesting graph there).

Gears of War developer Epic Games won't rule out the possibility of releasing an FPS entry in the series.
Speaking to our friends at OXM about the future of the popular third person shooter series and the chances of a Gears FPS, executive producer Rod Fergusson said: "I'm a big believer in never say never."It's all about what's interesting in the industry at the time and where fans want us to take it. We don't want to say never but it's not on the top of my mind either. We look at what makes sense and move in that direction."
Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly is currently developing Gears of War: Judgment, a prequel to Epic's trilogy. The Xbox 360 game will diverge from the regular Gears formula in a number of ways, most notably in the online department - get all the details in our recent Gears of War Judgment preview.

What I learned from playing Arkane Studios' anxiously awaited Dishonored is that playing it like a standard action game isn't the best course of action. You may succeed, but you're more likely to fail or stumble disappointingly to the end of a mission – a far cry from those playing with patience and a plan.
The QuakeCon 2012 demo I played was from about halfway throughDishonored's campaign, a section taking place during a dinner party murder mystery. You are the murderer, tasked with assassinating a woman named Lady Boyle during a masquerade party taking place at her estate.
The catch is that there are three women who go by the name "Lady Boyle," and you're not sure which one is your target. All are masked and wearing different colored dresses. Which Lady Boyle you are sent to kill is randomized every time you play, so unless you plan on killing all three women, you're going to have to do some detective work.

Microsoft is planning to release a "new Xbox", according to comments made by Brian Hall, general manager of the company's Windows Live unit.
Speaking on a Verge podcast about the new Outlook, he said: "We've operated Hotmail for about 16 years, we obviously have Exchange and Outlook that people use at work, and we just decided it was time to do something new and bring the best from each of those and put them together and release it right in time for the new wave of products that we have coming out with Windows 8, with the new version of Office, with the New Windows Phone and the new Xbox."Listen to his words for yourself from about 1 minute and 20 seconds into the movie below (thanks,We Got Life): We've asked Microsoft about Hall's comment and will update this story if we hear back.

August 6th, 2012, 20:43 Posted By: wraggster
Consumers' ability to trade-in games at GameStop contributes $1.8bn to the US games industry every year, the retailer has claimed.
Revealing that 70 per cent of all income derived from used games is immediately spent on new titles, GameStop president Paul Raines told Gamasutra that it’s proud of how it has facilitated pre-owned software on the US High Street.
"We are not ashamed of the pre-owned business and in fact we believe that it's good for the industry,” he argued.
"We're really not cannibalizing new game sales. That's a common misconception. The knowledge of how this model helps drive sales really resides at the publisher level.
"A lot of our consumers tell us that the pre-owned business has allowed them to learn more about video gaming. There's a disconnect between a lot of the blogosphere and what consumers tell us.”
So why does this debate persist? Because developers remain uncomfortable with the notion of pre-owned, Raines argued.
"We have not been successful in communicating to developers how this business really helps,” he admitted. “So my answer to developers is that we are driving growth in a category that needs to grow.
“We think there's a real lack of awareness as far as how it's good for the industry. The transparency you're seeing from us is because we want people to know about it, helping people understand what we're trying to do for the industry."

The Behemoth is hosting the second annual Tournament of Champions to discover and reward the "best Castle Crashers Arena Fighter in all the world," with first place earning a real-life, honest-to-chicken, gold-plated Xbox 360.
This mirrors (in a yellowed, rich kind of way) the top prize from last year's tournament, but 2012 adds some new rewards for first place: 25 squeezy chickens, a chonku-chonku mini-fig in the color of the winner's choosing, all nine Castle Crashers phone charms, a beanie, a Behemoth t-shirt and the new Necromancer figurine signed by Behemoth developers.
Second place gets everything except the golden Xbox, but in fewer numbers than first place, and third place gets fewer things than second, though more than anyone in the top 50. The prizes are outlined on the Behemoth blog.
To qualify, players must hit the top 100 on the XBLA Castle Crashers Weekly Ranked Arena Leaderboards by August 17 at noon PST. The Tournament is scheduled for August 25, starting at 8 a.m. PST and ending at 5:30 p.m. PST. The top 96 valid registrants will compete in one-on-one melee matches, hosted by a Tournament staff member, until just one player is left standing.
Check out the full rules and schedule right here.

Activision Blizzard may see its share price increase as much as 50 percent as it prepares to launch the Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft andCall of Duty Online in China, financial newsweekly Barron's reports. Activision Blizzard is currently trading at $11.25, after reporting Q2 earnings above expectations but below the previous year, bringing in $1.08 billion.
Investors expect shares could reach a high of $17 due to Mists of Pandaria's launch in September and Activision's partnership with Chinese Internet provider Tencent Holdings to launch the free-to-play game Call of Duty Online, potentially in "mid-2013," Barron's says. The Chinese gaming market generated $7 billion and included 160 million gamers in 2011, and is expected to grow by 20 percent this year to cash in more than $9 million in 2014.
Activision Blizzard's shares have fallen 10 percent this year, while the broad market has gained 11 percent. Parent company Vivendi was looking to sell its 61 percent stake in Activision Blizzard earlier this year, but it appears those efforts have shifted focus.

It's most likely that 2012’s top three best-selling games will be Call of Duty, FIFA and Assassin’s Creed. But not in that order, says Ubisoft.
EMEA managing director Alain Corre has told MCV he hopes momentum behind Assassin’s Creed III will push it to the No.2 slot this year. The fifth game in the series, ACIII arrives on October 31st.
“In the last few years there’s Call of Duty and FIFA on top,” Corre told MCV.
“This year with the product we have and the buzz we’ve been hearing, we can say hello to FIFA. Hopefully we will beat it.
“We are lucky this year because there are not a lot of other action games coming and our product is better than before. When you mix the two, I think the potential for ACIII?can be really, really big.”
Corre says the market has prior form in pushing older franchises to the top.
“Call of Duty was the first one to go above 20m worldwide, at a time when it was five years old. It shows that when a game is perfect, perfectly accepted, then the consumers, with word of mouth, will go for it. I think with Assassin’s Creed we are going that way.”
For Creed specifically, broader appeal will help too, he added:
“We have a lot of different gameplay in the game. There are a lot of quests you can do that can appeal to the hardcore gamer, can appeal also to the father and his son, to the 30-year-old guy with his girlfriend. We’re trying to open up that so it can be an adventure game for everybody and I think there is no limit to what we can achieve.”

Premium service pulls in more than 2m subscribers
Over 12 million customers have now registered to Call of Duty Elite, Activision told investors during today's earnings call.
Of this, 2.3m players have signed up the the premium subscription service.
Paid-for accounts offers players advanced statistics tracking and premium DLC content.
Though some have criticised Activision for the service in the past, consumers flocked to the service in such numbers that server capacity had to be increased at November's launch.
The news comes just after the publisher announced the final DLC package for Modern Warfare 3, which will mark the end of the current subscription DLC season.

After officially announcing it at EA's Summer Showcase today, BioWare dropped a few more details on Mass Effect 3's Leviathan DLC on its blog. The Leviathan DLC, a single-player campaign that expands on the game's story, received an alluring description from BioWare:
"Something lurks in the dark corners of space, something powerful enough to kill a Reaper. Shepard must discover the most closely guarded secret in the galaxy before the Reapers silence it forever. Discover more about the origins of the Reapers as you race across the galaxy to find the Leviathan. Unravel the dark history of the Reaper Race before it is too late."
Leviathan's plot is set in the midst of the Mass Effect 3 story, prior to the game's ending. The "Reaper origin story" will allow players to "explore uncharted systems and new areas on the Citadel" and "interact with brand new characters." Additionally, players will unlock the AT-12 Raider shotgun and M-55 Argus Assault Rifle as part of the downloadable content. The Leviathan DLC will land on Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 later this summer for $10.
BioWare also announced a weapons DLC pack for the game called the "Firefight Pack," which will include "two powerful new weapons and five bonus weapons" for use in the game's single-player campaign. The Firefight weapons pack is set to launch August 7 for $2. Check out our galleries of both pieces of DLC below.

Microsoft has never been shy about its ambitions for Kinect's depth sensing abilities. A pair of patent applications, however, show that its hopes and dreams are taking a more Hollywood turn. One patent has the depth camera going portable: a "mobile environment sensor" determines its trajectory through a room and generates a depth map as it goes, whether it's using a Kinect-style infrared sensor orstereoscopic cameras. If the visual mapping isn't enough, the would-be camera relies on a motion sensor like an accelerometer to better judge its position as it's jostled around. Microsoft doesn't want to suggest what kind of device (if any) might use the patent for its camera, but it's not ruling out anything from smartphones through to traditional PCs.
The second patent filing uses the Kinect already in the house for that directorial debut you've always been putting off. Hand gestures control the movie editing, but the depth camera both generates a model of the environment and creates 3D props out of real objects. Motion capture, naturally, lets the humans in the scene pursue their own short-lived acting careers. We haven't seen any immediate signs that Microsoft is planning to use this or the mobile sensor patent filing in the real world, although both are closer to reality than some of the flights of fancy that pass by the USPTO -- the movie editor has all the hallmarks of a potential Dashboard update or Kinect Fun Labs project.

Activision has released details on the last batches of extra content for last year's best-selling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Two more Content Collections will be released in August and September. Each will be made available on Xbox 360 first, with PS3 and PC versions following a few weeks later.
MW3 Collection #3: Chaos Pack will go live on August 9th and adds a brand new Chaos Mode to the multiplayer. This setting challenges players to survive against waves of enemies while chaining kills together in arenas with a wide variety of power-ups available.
The Chaos Pack will also include three new Face Off maps and four Spec Ops missions: Vertigo, Arctic Recon, Light 'Em Up and Special Delivery.
Finally, MW3 Collection #4: Final Assault arrives on September 9th and is designed for the most dedicated multiplayer fans. It features five new multiplayer maps, including an abandoned mining town, oilrigs, ocean liners, war-torn New Orleans and the beach of Jersey Shore.
Both packs will cost 1200 Microsoft point. Each map, mode and Spec Ops mission will be made available individually to Call of Duty Elite premium members before the Content Collections are released.

Next March has just got busier, with a new game in the Army of Two series reaching shelves.
Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel acts as a series 'reset' for the franchise, which debuted in 2008 and received a sequel in 2010. It follows two-characters, Alpha and Bravo, who must team-up on the streets of Mexico.
The game is powered by the Frostbite 2 engine (used in Battlefield 3) and is being developed by Visceral Games.
It is an Xbox 360 and PS3 title and will launch in March 2013, going up against the likes of Tomb Raider, God of War, Gears of War Judgment and South Park.

A new patch announced for the Japanese version of Dragon's Dogma will put "easy mode" in the options menu of the game, allowing players to switch over at any time. Capcom didn't specify the exact differences in easy mode, leaving us free to speculate that it removes one head from all multi-headed mythical monsters.
The patch will be released in Japan on August 6. Capcom has not announced plans for the rest of the world yet.
