Gamers won’t necessarily have to buy a copy of Medal of Honor to gain access to next year’s Battlefield 4 beta.
Speaking on Reddit, the company assured fans that “there will be other ways to get into the beta aside from MoH Warfighter – at this time, however, it is the only way to guarantee entry”.
The claim is at odds with EA’s marketing yesterday announcing the beta.
The studio went on to claim that concerns about the game’s early announcement and seemingly swift release, as well as saying that it won’t abandon Battlefield 4 upon its sequel’s release.
“We've been seeing a lot of concerns about the pacing of release (i.e. "only" two years after BF3),” it added. “I think it's worth noting that DICE has released a Battlefield game every two years or sooner AND Mirror's Edge at least every two years.
“I truly believe that we're in one of the best positions to be creating our next title – Frostbite 2 has matured, we've been gathering fan feedback like crazy, Battlefield 3 continues to expand with features which we can learn from, and we've got more data about how people play than ever.
“We will continue to support BF3. DICE and EA are dedicated to continuing our support for Battlefield 3. Just as we've continued to support and maintain Bad Company 2, we intend to continue providing the best Battlefield 3 experience we can well into the future and past the release of End Game and Battlefield 4.
“There are several teams at DICE. Starting work on Battlefield 4 does not mean that we will be abandoning Battlefield 3 or working any less hard to bring you the best expansions we can.”

Microsoft’s $99 subscription Xbox 360 trial could be coming to the UK and Europe.
The offer was rolled out to select American retailers last month. It sees gamers pay just $99 up front for an Xbox 360 console on the condition that the sign up to a two-year Xbox Live contract at $14.99 a month.
“We’ll watch it with interest, then we’ll decide if it makes sense for us to expand more fully in North America, globally or by region,” European Xbox boss Chris Lewis told VG247.
“It’ll be very interesting to see how it works out. We listen to what the consumers are asking for and we experiment with different propositions in different markets. I think it’ll be very popular.”
“There are certain things we’ve done in Europe over the years, for example; a lot of our soft and hard bundling initiatives have ended up becoming global initiatives based on consumption patterns.
“We just want to be where our consumers want us to be. We want to be able to offer that flexibility of choice, making that kind of proposition available to those that want to consume that way. There are others that may choose to do it differently, and want to go down the more traditional method. I think the key it to have that portfolio of offerings.”
Many hold the belief that the next generation of consoles will utilise subscription payment models to make it easier for consumers to swallow the cost of a new machine.

Microsoft’s My Xbox Live iOS app has been updated to offer users the ability to control their console with their iDevice.
The app’s v1.6 update allows iPad users to take control of a number of features including launching games, watching Xbox Live videos, in-video controls and browsing of the general UI.
The app already allows users to alter their avatars, track achievements and track recent activity.
The move can be seen as a natural precursor to the official release of Microsoft’s SmartGlass functionality for Xbox 360 that will look to further integrate “second screen” functionality into a host of console software.

The Kinect is awesome, but if you want to do anything at a higher resolution detecting a person’s limbs, you’re out of luck. [Chris McCormick] over at CogniMem has a great solution to this problem: with hardware already connected to your XBox.
The build uses the very cool CogniMem CM1K neural network on a chip trained to tell the difference between counting from one to four on a single hand, as well as an ‘a-okay’ sign, Vulcan greeting (shown above), and rocking out at a [Dio] concert. As [Chris] shows us in the video, these finger gestures can be used to draw on a screen and move objects using only an open palm and closed fist; not too far off from the Minority Report and Iron Man UIs.
If you’d like to duplicate this build, we found the CM1K neural network chip available here for a bit more than we’d be willing to pay. A neural net on a chip is an exceedingly cool device, but it looks like this build will have to wait for the Kinect 2 to make it down to the consumer and hobbyist arena.
You can check out the videos of Kinect finger recognition in action after the break with World of Goo and Google Maps.

Customers who pre-order Medal of Honor will be eligible for beta access to upcoming shooter
Yesterday’s rumours were true – Battlefield 4 will be the next entry in the DICE’s popular FPS series.
Furthermore, beta access to the game will be granted to those who pre-order fellow EA shooter Medal of Honor prior to its release on October 23rd.
Confusingly, the Medal of Honor site seems to suggest that beta access is only included in the Limited Edition version of Medal of Honor, contradicting the official press release.
The beta will go live in autumn 2013. Notably EA has not specified which formats the game will be released on – PS3, Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox 720, anyone?

Via RGH dump... X360Key has announced that their ODDE now supports Trinity/Corona Xbox 360 consoles with Hitachi Slim drives. Requires you to do RGH.
The X360Key Team have announced that their Xk3y ODDE (Optical Disc Drive Emulator) is now able to emulate the Hitachi Drive from the XBOX Slim (0500 & 0502).
However, it seems that it requires to do a RGH on it, in order to grab the CPU Key and "two other files" from the NAND. So, because of the ODDE limit next to a RGH, it could be 'useless', unless you want to make a Dual NAND console.
Regardless, here's their official statement:

The Limited Edition Halo 4 Xbox 360 has now been officially unveiled, and isn't as ugly as Shane Macgowan. The shells of both the console and controller are translucent, which actually looks rather snazzy. What's more, the console power button and the controller Xbox Guide button glow blue, not green, and match the overall blue/grey colour scheme. But there's no mention of the custom noises that the disc tray and power button make. For this console, you'll pay £269.99.Included are a copy of the Halo 4 game (standard edition!), two Halo 4 controllers, a wired headset, a 320GB hard drive and some redeemable tokens for Halo 4 game and avatar content. In addition to the console, Microsoft's marking the arrival of Halo 4 with a standalone Xbox 360 Halo 4 Limited Edition Wireless Controller. This is far nicer than the console-bundled controller. In the US, this controller will cost $59.99 - we can't find a local price, yet. The controller will launch ahead of Halo 4, on 21st October.

Haunting XBLA hit Limbo was almost a PSN exclusive, but Sony's request for the rights to the IP caused developer Playdead to sign on with Microsoft instead."We had issues when we were trying to sign Limbo because of the IP," said Sony Computer Entertainment executive producer Pete Smith, speaking at last week's Develop Conference in Brighton, as reported by Edge.Sony now regrets passing on the game - much as it did with Demon's Souls - because Limbo found huge commercial success, selling 300,000 copies in its first month on XBLA July 2010, and over a million by last November. It still sold well on PSN - where it was the highest-selling third-party PSN game of 2011, but there's no doubt that it would have sold much better on Sony's platform had it arrived there first.Smith still considers IP ownership vastly important, but cautioned that it can make developers skittish. "Remember: 100 per cent of nothing is nothing. A publisher is much more likely to commit to marketing and merchandising if they own the IP.""Sometimes all we want is protection so [devs] don't make a game, finish it then go to one of our rivals. We look at IP on a case by case basis. With a bit of common sense, you can find common ground."

July 16th, 2012, 19:36 Posted By: wraggster
The Lionhead team developing Fable the Journey had previously explored whether it should remove the on-rails element of the game, in response to widespread criticisms of its first E3 demonstration.
The Kinect-focused Xbox 360 project was criticised specifically for its on-rails set-up, with the camera in command of how the player moves. Though former studio boss Peter Molyneux incorrectly insisted that the game was not on-rails, at Lionhead the development team was pondering whether to scrap the feature. In a candid interview with CVG, Lionhead creative director Gary Carr said Molyneux's "on-rails rant, if we should call it that, was him trying to hit back at the criticisms saying that it wasn't on-rails".
"I think, if we had done this again, we would have just said, yeah, it's on rails. The truth is, at the time Peter was saying it wasn't on-rails, we at Lionhead were considering free body movement."
Carr claimed that the experimental 'off-rails' elements, where essentially players would lean in certain directions to move, had not worked our for the team.
"It was awful. It just wasn't fun," he said.
"The truth is, we were actually close to killing that E3 [2011] demo, but some of the team tried to revive it. We did come back from E3 with some people saying, we're doing something wrong here. We need to change course. Ultimately, the decision was, keep the faith. On-rails is actually necessary to make the game work really well."
Carr confessed that the E3 backlash had rocked the acclaimed studio's confidence.
"It destroyed them," he said.
"I think the presentation itself is partly to blame. It looked a bit like some spammy shooter, but actually we were building this big world around it. Y'know, you have about two minutes and 45 seconds to demonstrate what you're doing. I know that a main problem people have is they think we've taken the Fable series and trivialised it."
Vehement criticisms had internally cast doubts over the project, and yet a small team designing one of the game's dungeons had brought unity and focus to the group, Carr said.
"I think the turning-point was after the E3 showing, we finished up on developing our first dungeon. It's still the best one in the game. It just came together brilliantly. It has the Fable humour, it has the diversity, the combat, the puzzle-solving - it even has platform sections.
"We nailed it. I think that turned the team. People started realising that no, we were not making a shit game. We were making something that can be great. The team that put that dungeon together, which was about eight people, I think did more to lift the place than I ever could with some kind of speech on a Friday afternoon.
"The team rallied really quickly, it made us double-down on the project and worked really hard to make sure it was the best thing they could make."
Elsewhere in his interview with CVG, Carr explains how the studio wants to move on from its E3 moment, and recounts the moments of inspiration which restored Lionhead's faith in Fable The Journey.

An XBLA/PSN port of Dreamcast classic Sonic Adventure 2 was announced during Sega's Sonic Boom event at this week's San Diego Comic-Con. While details remain sparse, the shaky-cam footage above shows the port as part of an ongoing Sega Heritage initiative and gives the game a "fall" launch window. It also shows a massive crowd of Sonic fans freaking out, which is incredible on several levels.
Should this be the same Sonic Adventure 2 port that briefly showed up on the Xbox Marketplace last month, it'll be an HD remake, rather than a straight port, though the logo seen in the video above lacks any sort of HD branding. We'll update as soon as an official missive arrives from Sega with more information.

38 Studios' collapse is quite unfortunate, but the quality of the studio's Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning wasn't to blame. In fact, the game reviewed well enough that publisher Electronic Arts would be interested in partnering on a sequel.
"I think it's unfortunate how everything worked out [for 38 Studios]," Gibeau said. "At the end of the day, we saw a lot of creativity and vision in the team that Curt [Schilling] put together. We thought the game was terrific. It reviewed well. We built a good business there and hope there's a sequel to it someday. We'd love to be a partner for that," EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau told Game Informer magazine.
At this point, it's difficult to see a sequel getting made, as The Kingdoms of Amalur intellectual property rights are actually owned by the state of Rhode Island, which remains in the process of trying to reclaim 38's massive government loan.

2K Games’ action RPG Borderlands has the highest DLC attach rate of any game this generation.
That’s according to Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford, who was speaking to the press as the hype builds for the upcoming Borderlands 2.
“It had the highest attach rate of any DLC,” he told CVG. “The highest attach rate of anything this generation. The guys at Microsoft told us that the Borderlands had the highest attach rate of any DLC.
“When people love something, they tend to love it a lot. And I'm really gratified by that more than anything else. It's what makes us fight the good fight. You kill yourself. You work day and night. You put your soul into something, and you hope that the outcome is that people will like what you've created.
“When you find out that happened, it makes you want to work harder. So with Borderlands 2 there was incredible passion and momentum behind it.”
Check out this week's MCV to find out why Gearbox's Randy Pitchford believes Borderlands 2 could be a Top Five game of 2012.
A full interview with Pitchford will be published in next week's issue on Friday, July 20th.

Let's get this straight before we even get to the details – this is definitely Microsoft's fault. Not the kid's for spending all the money. Not the dad's for letting her child have access to her bank card. Dispel thoughts of bad parenting.
Close your eyes, breathe deeply and become one with the Mail Online.
Oh, wait! That’s an intro we ran to this story back in 2011. How daft of us! We don’t mean to re-tread old ground.
Unlike The Daily Sodding Mail.
“A 12-year-old boy accidentally ran up a £1,500 bill while playing Xbox Live – leaving his cash-strapped dad with no choice but to pick up the tab,” the paper wrote. “Sam Ghera's son Nik thought he was using up game points every time he 'improved' his characters while playing Call of Duty and FIFA.”
YOU DON’T ‘IMPROVE’ YOUR CHARACTER IN CALL OF DUTY! YOU DON’T ‘IMPROVE’ YOUR FOOTBALLER IN FIFA! You buy map packs in CoD and you buy Ultimate Team card packs in FIFA! IT’S NOT DIFFICULT.
AND that’s the only time the paper writes Xbox instead of XBox or X-Box. All three variations occur. X-BOX? SERIOUSLY?
And breathe.
“Now Sam, from Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, wants to warn parents of the hidden costs lurking behind games consoles after he was left with a sky-high credit card bill.”
IT’S NOT HIDDEN! IT SHOWS YOU FROM WHAT CARD THE MONEY WILL BE TAKEN AND HOW MUCH IT WILL COST EVERY TIME YOU DO IT! Either the kid’s thick or he’s fobbing off his dad. OBVIOUSLY.
“The youngster thought he had earned the points for scoring goals and killing villains and he used these to add extra weapons for his soldier in hit game Call of Duty and players in football game FIFA.”
LIES!
“Between December and June this year Nik spent a wallet-busting £1,150.
In one marathon gaming session Nik spent £100 in a single day on weapons and extra features after playing Call of Duty with his online friends.”
INACCURATE!
“With sites like eBay and iTunes it always asks you for a password before you make a purchase. But with Xbox Live you just press a button and then your money’s gone. I contacted Microsoft but six months down the line they’re still saying they’re looking into it.”
YEAH? WELL… WELL… Well, yeah, that in itself is actually true. Astonishingly. But it does tell you which card you’re being charged from and how much it costs. Quite clearly.
So there. Quit hating on Microsoft and get that lad a job – he owes you one and half grand.
NEXT WEEK: PARENTS SLAM LIDL FOR ACCEPTING REAL MONEY OFF TEENAGER. “I THOUGHT IT WAS PLAY MONEY FROM OUR MONOPOLY SET” IDIOT CLAIMS. PARENTS DEMAND REAL MONEY BAN.
