Peter Molyneux, Ian Livingstone, Dave Bailey and Alice Taylor struggle to see much use for a second screen
An expert panel assembled by BAFTA discussed the current trend of 'second screens' exemplified by Nintendo's Wii U console and Microsoft's SmartGlass technology.
Despite the many doubting voices that responded to the announcement of SmartGlass at E3 - not least from our own Rob Fahey - Mediatonic CEO Dave Bailey argued that it could prove a "pivotal" moment for Microsoft's approach to its Xbox business.
"They have admitted that there's a bigger picture: they are in the battle on mobiles and tablets, they are in the battle for entertainment more broadly than just games," he said.
"Microsoft has admitted that there's a bigger picture: they are in the battle on mobiles and tablets, they are in the battle for entertainment more broadly than just games"
Dave Bailey, Mediatonic
"SmartGlass allows them to take part in that bigger opportunity, which we didn't really see from the other folks at E3... If we get to open up, over time, Xbox Live onto other platforms that aren't just Microsoft hardware, that's great news. I welcome it."
That sentiment was echoed by Peter Molyneux, who expounded on the importance of gaming companies acknowledging and meeting the challenge that Apple presents to the industry.
"It's a recognition by Microsoft that Apple is here, and it is definitely taking gaming seriously," Molyneux said. "If you saw the conference yesterday, you'll see that they really are taking multiplayer, connected gaming super seriously. Because, guess what, we have been really lazy in our industry.
"We made great strides early on, with connecting people together with servers in games like Halo and Call of Duty, and we kinda stopped there. And there's plenty of holes that smart people like Apple will offer to fill more easily, more delightfully, with more accessible games."
However, both Bailey and Molyneux expressed considerable doubt over the utility of the 'second screen' concept to gaming. SmartGlass, Bailey argued, has more obvious utility in a broader media context, but he confessed that he is unsure about "what Nintendo is trying to achieve" with the Wii U.
"One overriding thing that is true of all hardware, but doubly true of Smart Glass, is that it needs applications that really delightfully support it. And that's where I was disappointed in the Wii U," Molyneux added.
"I struggle, as a designer, to think of how we'll use this second screen. In ZombiU, it had to tell me to look down at the second screen, and that's just rubbish"
Peter Molyneux, 22 Cans
"There was nothing that really grabbed me. I struggle, as a designer, to think of how we'll use this second screen. In ZombiU, it had to tell me to look down at the second screen, and that's just rubbish."
Alice Taylor, former commissioning editor in Education for Channel 4, expressed concern that the growth of companies like Apple, the proliferation of multi-function devices, and the possibility of connective services like SmartGlass could lead to the collapse of Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer.
However, while Nintendo's future in the hardware business was not discussed further, Eidos life president Ian Livingstone dismissed the notion that the Japanese giant would be beaten any time soon.
"Nintendo is effectively a toy company with very deep pockets," he said. "They have highs and they have lows, but if you look at their IP alone, it's worth a fortune. Their platforms might be problematic in the near term, but only in the near term.
"They could easily put Mario on the iPad tomorrow if they so wished. They've got lots of options, lots of IP, and a tremendous amount of cash."

Microsoft brings its My Xbox Live app to a whole new audience
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]www.microsoft.com
Xbox Live's Major Nelson has announcedimprovements to the iOS My Xbox Live app and the launch of the same app on Android. The free app has its most robust version on Microsoft's Windows Phone platform, but today's update to the iOS version adds the ability to control your Xbox 360 from your iPhone. It also adds a Discover section to help users find new Xbox 360 content on their phones. The iPad version of the app adds retina display support and improved authentication.
The newly-launched Android version will mirror the previous iOS version of the My Xbox Live app. Users won't be able to control their console from their phones, but friends lists, profile editing, Avatar customization, achievements, and Xbox Live Spotlight will all be available.

Nelson was quick to clarify that this is not the launch of Xbox SmartGlass, which Microsoft showed off at E3 last week. The My Xbox Live app is currently available on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

A group of Congressmen have sent letters to the US International Trade Commission over issues between Microsoft and Motorola
A group of Congressmen have sent letters to the US International Trade Commission asking the organization to decide against a ban of the Xbox 360 console. ITC administrative law judge David Shaw recommended a ban after Microsoft's console was found to infringe on patents held by Motorola Mobility. The Congressmen accused Motorola of abusing fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) patents to seek an exclusion order. They join a growing chorus against the ban on the console, including recent additions Activision and IBM.
"It would be severely detrimental to the U.S. economy to allow an essential patent holder to obtain an injuction against an industry participant instead of licensing their patents on FRAND terms," patent lawyer Mark G. Davis of Weil, Gotshal & Mangeswrote to US ITC secretary Lisa Burton.
Eight members of the US House of Representatives wrote a letter to ITC chief Deanna Okun opposing the ban: Rep. Dave Reichert, Rep. Norm Dicks, Rep. Jim McDermott, Rep, Doc Hastings, Rep. Adam Smith, Rep. Rick Larsen, Rep. Cathey McMorris Rodgers, and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler.
"An exclusion order against the Xbox 360 consoles could threaten high-paying America jobs and continued economic growth in Washington and throughout the nation," they said in their joint letter.
Other tech companies including HP and Nokia have backed Microsoft in this matter. The US Federal Trade Commission also came out against the ban last week, according to Bloomberg. At the time, Motorola said it was willing to license the patent, but Microsoft and Apple were not willing to come to terms.
"To date, however, neither party has been willing to enter into a cross-license on reasonable terms and thus we all find ourselves in seemingly endless litigation," said Motorola in a statement.

Microsoft has added a new entertainment app to its Xbox Live service, this time as part of a partnership with Paramount Pictures.
The new app will give Xbox 360 owners quicker access to Paramount movies. Films can be either rented or purchased in standard or high-definition and then streamed to the console, according to Joystiq.
The service is currently only available in the US.
Movies are streamed directly from Paramount's website. Users must sign up and subscribe to the filmmakers' service before they can use the app. They will also require an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
During it's E3 press conference last week, Microsoft pledged to double the number of entertainment providersavailable on Xbox Live. It announced 35 new partnerships including Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon and Machinima.

In March, when Microsoft hired Phil Harrison, it was widely assumed that it was his time at Sony that got him the job. Harrison, however, tells us that while that was no doubt a factor, it was what he did in the years following his departure from Sony that were key.
Speaking to us at E3 last week, Harrison, once president of Sony's Worldwide Studios and now corporate vice-president of Microsoft's IEB division, bemoaned the "lazy" headlines - "Sony bloke joins Microsoft," as he puts it - that followed his appointment. Lazy, perhaps, but understandable; Harrison was a core member of the team that launched every console in the PlayStation family, and was widely perceived as the public face of PS3 in its early days.
Following his departure from Sony in 2007, Harrison joined Infogrames as president, and in 2010 he co-founded London Venture Partners, which invested in and advised UK mobile, social and cloud videogame companies. That made him the ideal man for Microsoft, whose E3 conference made it abundantly clear that the company's plans extend far beyond console gaming.
"[That experience] is incredibly relevant, and I believe it's one of the reasons why they wanted me to be part of the team," he told us. "I think there's been some lazy headline writing … [but] that's not really what it is.
"It's the four years I've spent in the middle, working with mobile companies, with social and cloud companies, investing in businesses, understanding new business and audience engagement models. That, I think, is giving me a toolbox to play with which is very relevant to the future of Microsoft and Xbox."
That future, of course, remains shrouded in secrecy, but Harrison admits that what drew him to Microsoft was "the strength of the vision. I signed an NDA, and was exposed to the future roadmap of the company going many years into the future and that, combined with the talent in the senior leadership team, was what convinced me to join."
That Microsoft has the financial means to do pretty much as it pleases, of course, was also a factor, and Harrison praises the "amazing resources" at his disposal. The immediate focus is onSmartGlass, the cross-platform, second-screen technology that will launch later this year. That, Harrison says, neatly encapsulates what drew him to Microsoft, and vice versa.
"It's a really complicated technical problem to solve - to get the integration seamlessly play and resume on different devices and move content from the screen to the touch device, and vice versa, via the cloud," he said. "I think Microsoft is one of a small handful of companies on the planet that has the capability to do it."

Lionhead designer Ted Timmons says he learned a lesson after showing offFable: The Journey to the public for the first time at E3 2011. "It's fine to be on rails," he says a year later, at the tail end of E3 2012. The spin-off was famously labeled as "on rails" by the public thanks to an early demo, and Timmons told Joystiq that while the team was surprised at the response, they eventually got a different message out of the whole thing: "We shouldn't be distracted by the whole 'on rails' issue," he says now. "We just want to make an awesome Kinect game."
The Journey's awesomeness is yet to be determined, but it is certainly a Kinect game. The E3 2012 demo featured about ten minutes of two different levels in the game. You use Microsoft's all-seeing camera to snap and steer a horse's reins, throw a magical spear and open a locked door with magic spells.
But while it all works (once you're shown how to do it - the tutorial is still a work in progress), the real question here is whether this journey is one worth taking.

It doesn't bring quite the overhaul that previous updates have, but at least some Xbox 360 users should be seeing a new software update available the next time they turn on their console. Xbox's Major Nelson confirmed on Twitter today that the spring update is rolling out to "a few" users this week, with everyone else set to receive it next week. As for details on the update, he's only gone as far as to confirm that it contains "behind the scenes improvements & prep for future enhancements." Presumably, those future enhancements include many of the new features we saw at E3 last week, but there's still no official word as to when they'll actually roll out.

The former Microsoft exec and Lionhead boss is also "shocked" by Microsoft's lack of attention to Windows gaming
In business, it's only natural to look across the board at the competition. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all keep a close eye on one another to see how respective strategies and product lines are evolving. According to ex-Lionhead leader Peter Molyneux, the Microsoft camp actually looks at Sony "obsessively."
In a wide-ranging interview with Molyneux last week at E3, GamesIndustry International prefaced a general question about Sony with our own comment that Molyneux and people in even higher offices at Microsoft must be constantly looking at Sony. Molyneux quickly noted, "Yes, very much so. Obsessively so."
Overall, Molyneux believes Sony's own first-party studio system could be its savior, but he's not sure the company's corporate troubles will enable them to flourish.
"If Sony can double down on those first party developers, give them the headroom to be inventive and be creative, especially when it comes it any next gen platform, then they could pull lots of rabbits out of the hat"
Peter Molyneux
"Sony has always had a very strong first person line-up, which I think is incredibly smart. They've got good developers. They've got some very talented developers. The way I always feel with Sony is that if they double down on those first party developers, give them the headroom to be inventive and be creative, especially when it comes it any next generation platform, then they could pull lots of rabbits out of the hat," he remarked.
"What I worry about, with their corporate pressure and the pressure on costs, I worry about the ability to do that. More and more - and this is a personal thing - I just don't know where they're going in hardware terms. They had the Move, but it wasn't as early as the Wii and it wasn't as innovational as Kinect. They seem to be third in line in that race. I have expected, every single press conference for the last year, Sony to bring out this magic rabbit out from a huge hat and say, 'Aha, world. You really don't realize what's going on.' And I do worry about them."
Sizing up Microsoft's E3 showing, Molyneux commented, "I thought it was a very smart move on their behalf to focus on demos. And actually, I thought EA's line, 'You're going to see ten great demos from ten great developers,' you could have said the same for Microsoft. I felt there wasn't nearly as much Kinect stuff as previous years, which was a little bit of a surprise and a shock to me."
He continued, "I like the SmartGlass thing that they were talking about but I didn't completely understand it. I'd like to have seen more examples of it. It sounded like it was a big thing, because here's Microsoft supporting Apple. It really didn't get a lot of play for that. I like the Nike Fitness product. I thought [the conference] was good. It was, as usual, super hyper-professional. They finished on the second. But what did it tell us about them structurally in the next two, three years? I don't think it said anything about it. I think - in fact, it almost painted a stone wall in my mind. It was like they were holding their breath and waiting for something else"
Molyneux sees all the console makers as struggling to deal with the reality that they're no longer the only game in town in 2012.
"It's always shocked me about how little Microsoft cared about the Windows platform. There was hardly a single talk about Windows 8 at all. You would've thought, with a billion installed machines, there would be at least some play"
Peter Molyneux
"It's going to be an interesting problem for all the console manufacturers I think. It's because so much computer entertainment, is spreading and diversifying over so many different platforms. They no longer have the luxury of keeping us all funneled into these consoles. A whole lot of manufacturers in the industry have been in a luxurious position for so long, where they could restrict the entertainment content to the masses. They did a very good job of squeezing the PC out and making this just about three formats and now it feels like it's sand dripping through their fingers. It's escaping from them," he observed.
Speaking of the PC, Molyneux was also surprised by Microsoft's continued lack of attention to the PC format for gamers.
"I would hope the next generation would bring about a new wave of innovation. If we don't do that in consoles, then you will find that those people that want innovation will start retreating to other formats. Look at the PC. It's incredible to me how there's been a resurgence in PC gaming. There's a lot more innovation now... I think that's the other thing about the Microsoft press conference. It's always shocked me about how little Microsoft cared about the Windows platform. There was hardly a single talk about Windows 8 at all. You would've thought, with a billion installed machines, there would be at least some play. And the whole metro interface is much more gamified, but there was no talk about it at all," Molyneux said.
"[PR] did two things. They stopped me from saying the wrong corporate thing, but they also stopped me from making a fool of myself. It's very easy to do that now. Very, very easy"
Peter Molyneux
Ultimately, with so many platforms available to developers aside from consoles, it can be confusing for game developers, but the new landscape also creates many opportunities.
"This is exactly why I left Microsoft," Molyneux, who recently formed 22 Cans, remarked. "I think as a creative person, as someone who loves creativity and loves embracing ideas, this seemed like the perfect time to set up another company and find enough people that believed in one focused idea, crazy though that idea might be, that embraces all this new technology rather than try to ignore it. And the only way I found that I was able to do that was in a start up because there are so many political things that have to go on in existing games development, whether they're supporting retail or supporting some format that's out there. I think only a little start-up can totally embrace that newness and the excitement that's going on."
And as a bonus it's certainly liberating for someone as outspoken as Peter Molyneux. He related to us how it's been a breath of fresh air to be able to talk without restrictions.
"It is very, very difficult when you're a developer owned by a publisher because when you're talking it's not just your voice. It's the voice of your team, which is 200 persons strong; it's the voice of the whole of Microsoft," he said, reflecting on Lionhead. "And that has to be measured, and so at one point, at Microsoft, totally understandably, there would be one journalist in the room and three or four PR people just writing everything down. Now there's nobody. That took me a bit of while to get used to. You almost expect someone to pop up and look in the room and say, 'Well, you can't say that.'"

You've seen that Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC trailer, right? Vampires are finally getting the attention they deserve, with a ton of new life-draining abilities and perks. Only problem is, Dawnguard isn't out, and won't be for another month or two. But you know what is out? Some great vampire mods that give vampires all sorts of new gameplay and spells to make them generally excellent to play with right now. Sink your teeth into into these!
 http://uk.pc.gamespy.com/pc/elder-sc...1225022p1.htmlI'm a growing undead boy.
The first and most major mod an aspiring bloodsucker should install is Sann's Vampire Overhaul, which strips how vampires in Skyrim work down to the bare essentials before building them back up in a way that's twice as interesting and four times as powerful. It keeps the four stages of blood deprivation, but also adds vampire ranks to climb by biting enough necks. Each gives you enhanced power and abilities, culminating with the Ancient rank which lets you pretty much gallivant out in the sunlight with little more than a tan. Additionally, vampire sight is now a toggle rather than a temporary buff (making you more deadly at night,) and you can breathe underwater permanently -- which makes sense, considering you technically don't breathe at all, what with being dead and all.
It's the most comprehensive vampire mod currently in the Steam workshop, and while there are a few alternatives, it's certainly the one that's managed to pay attention to every single aspect of being a vampire. You can even feed off fresh corpses, as well as reanimate anything shy of level 80 to be your permanent companion. Impressively, there's even an entirely new perk tree just for the bloodsuckers.

But top-end titles 'may move to new platforms such as TV after the next generation of consoles'
Triple-A games will not disappear in the near to long term future, industry icons Ian Livingstone and Peter Molyneux have claimed.
Speaking at the Bafta Games questions time, the games veterans agreed that triple-A development was here to stay, although the way in which customers recieve it may change.
“I don’t think triple-A games will ever go away because they are still leading the way in terms of production values, investment and R&D,” said Eidos life president Ian Livingstone.
“It’s just how the next consoles are going to survive, will there be any hardware after the next-generation? Probably not, it’ll probably all be embedded in TV.”
22 Cans founder and former creative director of Microsoft Games Studios Europe Peter Molyneux said that whilst the sector for blockbuster games would not disappear, there would be less and less titles meeting the high standards expected at the top-end of gaming.

The cancellation of Inside Xbox has been described as logical by Xbox Europe interactive entertainment VP Chris Lewis.
The show, which was broadcast on Xbox Live, was scrapped in May, with Microsoft saying that it had “decided to move away from the current first-party produced content model and transition to a third-party content model”.
And speaking to Eurogamer at E3 2012, Lewis has, without addressing the issue directly, expanded slightly on the subject.
"We just felt it had reached a logical and natural position where we felt that we had a strong voice to that community in any case," he explained. "We've got 40m people on Xbox Live, we know that audience closely follows what we're up to, so we felt it was logical [to close it].
"The key to answering your question though is our commitment to keep bringing that kind of content to satisfy the appetite of that audience.
"We have no desire to move away from that. In my opinion, we are focussed on it more than ever – understanding how to target that audience, how not to alienate that audience.”

American trade body The Entertainment Retailers Association has urged against a possible ban on sales of the Xbox 360 in the US.
An International Trade Commission judge last month recommendedthat the machine should no longer be imported into the US and all sales of unsold stock to be blocked. The problems stems from a patent dispute between Microsoft and Motorola.
"Our membership includes most of the major US game publishers and the major video game console makers," an ESA statement reads.
"Accordingly, the ESA is uniquely positioned to describe the impact on the public interest of an exclusion order affecting the Xbox.
"The video game industry is a significant contributor to the US economy and job growth, and reaches American consumers of all walks of life. According to a 2011 NPD industry sales report, nearly three-quarters of all American households play games, and consumers spent nearly $25bn on video games, hardware, and accessories in 2011.
"As described here in more detail, an exclusion order banning the importation of Xbox gaming consoles into the US would harm not only Microsoft, but a variety of other parties across the gaming ecosystem, including most importantly consumers and game publishers."

June 11th, 2012, 23:03 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft executive Phil Harrison insists his new employer isn't leaving gamers behind in its bid to transform the Xbox 360 from a games console into a multimedia device, telling us he believes "gamers are going to be pretty well catered for" during the next 12 months.
Microsoft's E3 2012 press conference last week suggested that the company was more interested in playing up Xbox's new role as its all-in-one entertainment brand than as a games console. There was the announcement of the Spotify-rivalling Xbox Music service, the Nike + Kinect Training fitness software, and the intriguing, multiplatform SmartGlass technology.
Gamers felt rather left out, but speaking to us at the show last week, Harrison - the former Sony exec who joined Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division two months ago - said the games shown on stage and the show floor proved that Microsoft still had gamer interests at heart.
"Game consumption on the console is going up," he said. "Entertainment consumption is going up, and is now higher then games, but games are growing as well. I have no concerns about what that means for gamers, whether they're core gamers or casual gamers or somewhere in between.
"This E3, we have announced that our top five franchises are all returning on Xbox 360 within the next 12 months, and I don't know of many times in a platform's history when that has happened, whether on Xbox or any other console.
"Halo, Gears Of War, Forza, Fable and Dance Central, all returning in a bigger, better way. I think gamers are going to be pretty well-catered for."
The suspicion remains, however, that E3 2012 was light on surprise new announcements because, behind closed doors, the industry is gearing up for the next generation of console hardware. Harrison wouldn't be drawn on whether there was ever any weight to claims that Microsoft had planned to unveil the Xbox 360 successor at E3 this year, but does confirm that the company has more in the works than it showed on stage.
"From a Microsoft perspective, I think we showed in a 90-minute press event a pretty good selection of the things we're working on," he told us. "But by no means did we show everything. Inevitably, there'll be new games available for next year."

Recently unveiled tech to be a single app
Microsoft is to incorporate its new SmartGlass tech into all of its future first-party titles.
As reported by Joystiq, Microsoft Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer said that once the tech is released in autumn, new games will allow users to connect their Xbox 360 with their tablets and smartphones.
"It just makes so much sense for a developer who wants to supply, maybe not time-critical information, like 'that enemy is getting ready to shoot you,' but information that augments what's happening on screen,” he said.
"I think you'll see information sharing, context sharing while you're in the room, with video and with games, as well as gameplay happening in more distributed environments."
Spencer confirmed that SmartGlass would come in the form of a single app that can be used to sync up with a user’s gamertag.

After closing out the Microsoft conference with the total and utter annihilation of Los Angeles (don't worry, Californians: it won't happen for another 13 years), it's easy to think Black Ops II is just another explosion-packed round of Call of Duty mayhem. Well, it is - and it isn't.
After sitting through an intriguing behind closed doors demo, we grabbed director David Anthony to talk branching storylines, Strike Force, villains and much, much more...

Black Ops 2 marks the biggest switch in the series for some time in terms of setting and gameplay types. Who did you have to convince at Activision in order to take it in a different direction?
Good question! I can tell you this - and it sounds like a cliché - because you always hear people say, "Oh the publisher was so supportive!" but, honestly, in this, they genuinely were. Because they understand that, at Treyarch, what we always try to do is ask: "What are the reasons that people are going to come back and play this game?" You have a lot of choices when it comes to entertainment these days and we take that very seriously, and we want to make sure that we give people experiences that they haven't seen before in the franchise. That was really important to us. So, when I go to Activision and I say that, they're very supportive of that. So, in that respect, it was actually kind of easy.
The key mantra from the start was: surprise. We want to surprise people at every step of the way while they're playing this game. Break expectations. When they're playing this game, whether it's from a story point of view, character development, gameplay types, the actual structure of the campaign itself - just when people think that they're starting to get to grips

Microsoft's European Xbox 360 chief has shed a little more light on the platform holder's controversial decision to shut down its core-orientated on-console Inside Xbox video service.Speaking to Eurogamer backstage at E3 earlier this week, Xbox Europe interactive entertainment VP Chris Lewis explained that it had outlived its usefulness."We just felt it had reached a logical and natural position where we felt that we had a strong voice to that community in any case," he said."We've got 40 million people on Xbox Live, we know that audience closely follows what we're up to, so we felt it was logical [to close it]."Lewis went on to stress that Microsoft has every intention of continuing to serve core gamers, though didn't reveal exactly what kind of content will replace Inside Xbox."The key to answering your question though is our commitment to keep bringing that kind of content to satisfy the appetite of that audience," he said."We have no desire to move away from that. In my opinion, we are focussed on it more than ever - understanding how to target that audience, how not to alienate that audience."But to be clear, we've got more casual gaming experiences we want to bring - we've got music, we've got entertainment, we want to bring fitness and lifestyle to Xbox 360 like the stuff you saw with Nike, all of which is possible through Kinect. Those things allows us to realise our vision."We want to be the entertainment hub in the living room - the box of choice in every respect, whether it is hardcore gaming, fitness, music, whether its browsing, voice search. We think we're so well placed in regards bringing that to life versus anybody else."Dan Maher, one half of the Inside Xbox team, has since resurfaced as Explosive Alan Productions though is yet to fully detail exactly what his new company will be doing."Hearing tales of plans to plug the gap left by IX. Don't know whether to laugh or cry, so I'm craughing," Tweeted Maher earlier today.
