Microsoft forced Ensemble into turning RTS title into Halo game, says studio founder
Developers at Bungie were concerned Halo Wars was ‘whoring out’ its leading franchise, the founder of Ensemble has said.
Speaking to GII, Tony Goodman said the Age of Empires developer had never intended Halo Wars to be part of Microsoft’s leading franchise, but was forced by the console giant into adapting the RTS into the series.
He said that Microsoft was nervous about the risks of creating a completely new IP, and subsequently delayed the development of the game by more than a year whilst changes were made.
“Microsoft was pretty risk averse and they said, 'I don't know if we want to take the risk of creating strategy games on a console, we'd feel better if Halo were attached to it'," said Goodman.
"The difficult part of that was it took the game back about a year in development, and I think it never quite turned out the same. They just said, 'Why don't you just paint over what you have with Halo stuff?' But things aren't quite that simple.”

Halo franchise development director, Frank O'Connor, has ruled out use of Kinect in the gameplay of Halo 4, saying that its implementation will instead be reserved for the standalone Halo Waypoint app.
Thus far neither Microsoft nor 343 Industries has officially announced Kinect support for the eagerly-anticipated Halo sequel, though functionality could have been introduced in future DLC or title updates. However, in an interview with CVG O'Connor said Halo's gameplay experience is intrinsically tied to the controller.
"Halo is a core game series," he said.
"More than most other games, it is directly linked to the muscle memory of holding an Xbox controller, going back as far as the days of the Duke on the first Xbox."
O'Connor continued on to say that, while Kinect can be useful, it isn't suited for the core mechanics of Halo 4.
"Kinect is a logical extension of the UI, and with regards to some of the sci-fi themes we're actually pretty excited about it, but not for the controls," he said.
"That's not what it's for, and we would never try to shoehorn that into our game. But there's a lot of cool experiences that we're going to put on Waypoint in the future that's completely appropriate for the experience."
In the same interview O'Connor also said 'Halo 4 isn't chasing Call of Duty's tail.

Appearing soon after Zune's end, we've been sent these images of what Microsoft's likely to offer in Xbox Music. Matching those early rumors, it looks like some cloud-linked features will make an appearance in the form of synchronized playlists, while the service will offer a free half-month trial alongside paid subscriptions. Prices are currently set at £8.99 ($15) for a month, while £89.90 ($146) will offer a year's unlimited access to "millions" of tracks, to stream and download across Xbox, Windows, and Windows Phone. The system's UI seems to borrow its looks from Windows' Metro tile-based style, with a verysimilar keyboard that appears to be navigable from your Xbox controller. Take a tour of the gallery below and expect to hear more specifics ahead of the big Windows 8 launch next month.

Capcom’s Resident Evil 6 has been awarded a near-perfect 39/40 from weekly Japanese games bible Famitsu.
That’s one point better than Resident Evil 5 and ever so close to becoming only the publication’s 20th 40/40 title.
"The visuals are flashy and really thrilling," one of its first reviews states, as reported by Polygon. "You've got this feeling of dread as you and your partner proceed through some dark locale, but there are new types of horror here, like people on the street turning into zombies one after the other.
“The creatures are pretty tough, and deciding when to fight and when to flee is important."
Another added: “The heroes work at different aims, but they contact and fight alongside each other, which leads to some fun situations."
Resident Evil 6 releases in the UK on October 2nd. The US reviews for the game will go live the day before.

Players can now record, edit, save and share their own recordings in All Seeing Eye Games’ new title Recording Studio, available now on the Xbox LIVE indie games channel of Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Recording Studio unleashes the full audio recording capabilities of the Xbox 360 headset, USB microphone and Kinect sensor to put a recording studio in the player’s living room for just 80 Microsoft Points.
Edit, move and copy tracks. Record with multiple microphones. Share your recordings with your friends online. All Seeing Eye Games’ Recording Studio couples high quality audio recording with an intuitive interface and powerful features to allow anyone to record themselves and tweak their recordings to perfection. Lead Programmer Darren Joe says, “Millions of players have USB microphones for their Xbox 360s. These are high quality recording devices that nobody has ever fully utilized. Recording Studio aims to change that.”
Recording Studio is the successor to All Seeing Eye Games’ award-winning Drum Studio series. Critics declared Drum Studio “a percussionist’s dream” (sfx-360.com) and “an intuitive gem” (yetanotherreviewsite.co.uk) that “takes music games to a whole new level” (teamxbox.com). The Drum Studio series changed what players could do with their Xbox 360 drum kits. Recording Studio now changes what they can do with their Xbox 360 microphones.
Recording Studio is available now exclusively on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 80 Microsoft Points. Download the free trial on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace here: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-CA/Pr...5-d80258550bc0.

Microsoft, Playground Games, and Turn 10 Studios have released a new edition in the “Forza Horizon – Behind the Scenes” video documentary series. In this latest edition of the video series fans have a chance to explore the open world playground of Colorado, which is the backdrop for all of the high intensity automotive action in Forza Horizon.
Forza Horizon’s creators spent months creating the incredible version of Colorado that fans will be able to race, drive, and explore in Forza Horizon. In this video, fans will be able to get an inside look at how the team took the hundreds of hours of video footage and the tens of thousands of photographs gathered during multiple reference trips to Colorado, and translate them into the massive, fun-filled world that makes up Forza Horizon. From the treacherous sun-baked cliffs of Red Rock to the pulsing non-stop party that is the Horizon Festival itself, Forza Horizon’s Colorado is an automotive playground brimming with intense action and surprises around every turn.
The multi-part “Forza Horizon: Behind the Scenes” video documentary series opens the door to the creation of this year’s biggest racing game, Forza Horizon.
Forza Horizon Season Pass Details Released: The “Forza Horizon” Season Pass is your action-packed ticket to automatic access to the “Forza Horizon” Expansion Pack (available Dec. 18, 2012), along with six game car packs, as they’re released through the next year. Each car pack will include six new vehicles and those who purchase the Season Pass will also get access to five exclusive season pass vehicles and the launch day pack.
The “Forza Horizon” Season Pass will be available for purchase starting 26th October, on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for only 4,000 Microsoft points (£49.99), representing a 17 percent overall savings as compared to purchasing the content separately.
Forza Horizon Music List Unveiled: Forza Horizon is set against the backdrop of a fictional automotive music festival – the Horizon Festival. This robust music list includes over 65 songs spanning more than 60 artists and was curated and created specifically for the game by Rob da Bank, the famed BBC Radio DJ and creator of the Bestival music festival. Players can tune into three distinct radio stations while playing “Forza Horizon,” each with a different style of music and each with its own authentic DJ giving players Horizon Festival updates.
The name and a description of each station can be found below:
· Station 1 / “Horizon Bass Arena” – “A bleeding-edge mix of the latest electronic and dance music, from dubstep to electro to drum & bass. If it’s got bass, you’ll find it here.”

· Station 3 / “Horizon Rocks” – “If it’s got guitars in it, it’s here. Whether these bands are hitting the festival scene for the first time in 2012 or are legends reforming for one last gig, you’ll find a diverse selection of music on this station, all turned up to eleven.

The Syndicate, a legendary criminal fraternity with pawns in play all over the globe, has turned its eye on the Saints and demands tribute. Refusing to kneel to the Syndicate, you take the fight to Steelport, a once-proud metropolis reduced to a struggling city of sin under Syndicate control. Take a tank skydiving, call in a satellite-targeted airstrike on a Mexican wrestling gang, and defend yourself against a highly-trained military force using only a sex toy in the most outlandish gameplay scenarios ever seen, igniting a city-wide war that will set Steelport on fire. Strap it on.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has teased plans for additional DLC for Borderlands 2 beyond the game’s season pass offerings.
Speaking with Kotaku, Pitchford mentioned the previously announced additional character add-on, then went on to tease new vehicle types in the works.
"We will have other, non-season pass related DLC. The additional character is one kind of example… Since we finished the game, we've started with some new ideas that we expect will show up in DLC. Some new vehicle types are on-deck – awesome stuff."
Pitchford also revealed a bit more about the team’s plans for the four pieces of the Borderlands 2 season pass content.
"The stuff we're planning and working on for the Campaign DLC Season Pass is big DLC stuff – more like Knoxx. We're extremely far along with the first campaign DLC. The second DLC is also in amazing shape. The third DLC is a little farther out and the fourth DLC is just in the pre-concept stages."

The team presents FreeStyle 3. A combination between FSD and code from the next RXE. 's team reassures us RXE out forever, but due to technical limitations and personal, it took a little late. This release brings some major improvements in one RXE. There are Covers and improved HTTP service. And of course how can we forget the integration of the Kinect Dash, including voice and gesture. It’s been over 20 years since Carrier Command was spotted in HMV – but it will make a triumphant return on Friday 28thSeptember 2012, at Gamerbase Trocadero, to celebrate the release of Bohemia Interactive’s bold re-imagining ‘Carrier Command: Gaea Mission’.
Running on the second day of London Games Festival, between 10:00am and 6:00pm, players will have the opportunity to revisit the original Amiga classic, running on a trusty Commodore computer hooked up to a large LCD screen. Whilst the visuals have certainly dated, the sandbox-style gameplay remains as cutting-edge as ever.
To illustrate how faithful the updated Xbox 360 and PC release is to its 16-bit predecessor, players will also have the opportunity to jump into Bohemia’s modern interpretation – a stunning mix of futuristic warfare from arguably the genre’s masters, combined with classic game design principles which remain compulsive to this day.
If you can’t make it to London, Carrier Command: Gaea Mission will also be available to play for free for two weeks after release in the following HMV Gamerbase stores: HMV Manchester, 90 Market Street; HMV Edinburgh, 130 Princes Street, HMV Glasgow, 235 Buchanan Street.
Everyone who plays the game in-store on Friday 28th September will be entered into a draw to win a brand new Xbox 360. There’s one console up for grabs at each Gamerbase.
“What better way to illustrate the fact that the original gameplay remains so enticing than to put both old and new side by side,” says James Cato, Group Sales Director, Mastertronic. “Hosting this special celebration at HMV’s flagship Gamerbase is a fitting way to launch Carrier Command: Gaea Mission to a new generation, as well as highlighting its origins to fans of the original.”
To join in the fun, head to HMV Gamerbase at the Trocadero between 10:00am and 6:00pm on Friday, September 28th 2012.
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission will be released by Mastertronic on Friday, September 28th 2012 for Xbox 360 and PC.
