The Assassin's Creed series has never shied away from touchy topics, with the very first game having players killing a variety of historical figures in the middle of a Christian-Muslim Holy War, and the second one using the Pope as its villain. However, with the third installment of the series set during the American Revolution, the development team has had to consider issues of slavery and treatment of Native Americans. And with the Assassin's Creed: Liberation spin-off for PlayStation Vita featuring a woman in the protagonist's role for the first time, gender issues are stepping to the forefront as well.
At the Assassin's Creed III launch party in Toronto last night, creative director Alex Hutchinson and Liberation scriptwriter Jill Murray talked with GamesIndustry International about the way they approached the thorny issues in their games. The first step, Hutchinson said, wasn't so much about being inoffensive or trying to make a point as it was about having their facts straight.
"We like it--I should say we don't mind it--if the truth is uncomfortable, if we can back it up with facts."
Alex Hutchinson
"Usually we're trying to be truthful," Hutchinson said. "And we like it--I should say we don't mind it--if the truth is uncomfortable, if we can back it up with facts. When we were dealing with the Borgias [in Assassin's Creed II], we were saying the Pope is a really bad guy. But if you do any amount of research, it's pretty clear we didn't make this up and it's pretty well documented. And it's the same with the Founding Fathers. These are real people; they have their ups and downs, their opinions. And when we can find documented evidence of an opinion they had or something they asked for and it was just true, then we were happy to put that in the game. But we tried not to have our subjective layer come into it; we saved that for the fictional storyline and the fictional characters."

The New Xbox feels a lot closer this morning than it did last night.
The headline from Microsoft’s Xbox financials was the 94 per cent drop in operating income. But combine that with the massively increased R&D figure, and you have an inescapable conclusion.
R&D expenses were up 44 per cent year-on-year, reaching nearly $320m in the quarter.
Further evidence to add to the pot is Microsoft’s relatively weak upcoming Xbox 360 release schedule, which despite including undoubted chart hit Halo 4 also includes sales flop Fable: The Journey. And little beyond that.
Not that it’s game over for Xbox 360 just yet, of course. The Xbox 360 achieved a year-on-year sales increase, jumping from 1.7m units in 2010 to 2.3m this year. Also up are Xbox Live revenues.
Nonetheless, all signs point to 2013 being the year of the Xbox 720. Or Xbox 8. Or Xbox Infinity. Popular consensus suggests that at least one, if not both, of the New Xbox or PS4 will arrive next year.
The question now is simple. How long can Microsoft afford to wait?

Eagle-eyed gamers may have already noticed that the Xbox 360's dedicated Twitter and Facebook appshave gone missing after the latest Dashboard update, and now Redmond has confirmed it's put the applications out to pasture. According to a Microsoft representative that spoke to IGN, the firm is "retiring the Facebook and Twitter apps" as it works to streamline functionality. When asked if the pair of apps will ever make a comeback, Ballmer and Co. didn't comment. Still crave to update your friends on your latest gaming exploits through the console? Spreading the news on the digital grapevine is still possible, but you'll have to access the social networks through the freshly added Internet Explorer app -- an experience we hope Xbox SmartGlass will improve.

Operating income falls 94%; Microsoft cites lower console and game sales for decreased revenue
Xbox 360 platform revenues have decreased by $418 million in the three months ending September 30th compared to last year.
In its latest quarterly report, Microsoft also showed that operating income for its Entertainment and Devices Division - which includes Xbox 360, Skype and Windows Phone - had fallen by 94 per cent, down to $19 million from $340m.
Revenues for the division meanwhile stood at $1.9 billion, down just $15 million from last year.
The console giant shipped 1.7 million Xbox 360 consoles during the first quarter of the 2013 fiscal year, compared to 2.3 million last year.
Microsoft blamed the decrease in revenue on the lower volume of consoles sold as well as lower videogame revenue, although it noted this was partly offset by higher Xbox Live revenue.

A peculiarity in the Xbox version of the Doom 3 BFG Edition prevents access toDoom and Doom 2 when Doom 3 is installed on the hard drive. According to publisher Bethesda this is not a bug.
"Doom 1 and 2 are the same games that are currently available on Xbox Live. Installing Doom BFG files to the system's hard drive could cause a conflict with the existing XBLA game files," a Bethesda spokesperson told Joystiq. "Players should not see a performance advantage by installing Doom 3, so we recommend not installing the game to the Xbox HDD."
They added, "If people do install DOOM 3 BFG Edition to their hard drive, they should still be able to access both titles from the Xbox Live Dashboard under 'My Games'."

Microsoft has announced its first-quarter earnings for the period ended on September 30, and the Entertainment and Devices Division, which houses the Xbox and interactive entertainment business, saw revenues roughly flat year-over-year at $1.95 billion while operating income dropped precipitously, down 94 percent to just $19 million, but at least the company remained in the black. Shipments of the Xbox 360 console dipped from 2.3 million to 1.7 million units for the period.
A large part of the blame was attributed to the tough comparison with last year's blockbuster release of Gears of War 3. "Video game revenue decreased primarily due to the release of Gears of War 3 in the first quarter of fiscal year 2012 with no comparable major releases in the first quarter of fiscal year 2013," the company explained.
Overall, Xbox 360 platform revenue decreased $418 million (24 percent), "due mainly to lower volumes of consoles sold and lower video game revenue, offset in part by higher Xbox LIVE revenue."
Microsoft as a whole announced quarterly revenue of $16.01 billion for the quarter with net income of $4.47 billion. The current quarter will be a crucial one for the company with the release of Windows 8, the Surface tablet, and in the Xbox space, of course, Halo 4.

Those who pick up the "Groundside Resistance weapon pack" for Mass Effect 3 can have Commander Shepard play with some new toys. The armory set includes seven new weapons, covering pistols to shotguns, along with a harpoon gun... to hunt elcor? Asked how it felt about being compared to a whale in that last line, our token office elcor responded, "Disappointed: Did you just call me fat?"
The weapon pack costs $1.99 (160 Microsoft points) and is available today on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The next big piece of a DLC content for Mass Effect 3 is the Omega mission, available November 27 for $15 (1200 MSP).

A new report shows that Xbox 360 owners actually have been anticipating the next Halo even more than Black Ops II
Xbox 360 has long been considered the home of the shooter, and while Master Chief at one time dominated all on the platform, in recent years, the dominant shooter franchise has unquestionably been Call of Duty. It's with some surprise, therefore, that we see a new Nielsen Game Rank report for Q4 2012 indicating that Xbox 360 consumers are actually anticipating Halo 4 even more than Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
The 99 percent game rank on Nielsen's chart (based on data collected during the past month) means that "Halo 4 on Xbox 360 is performing better in overall aggregated US consumer anticipation than 99 percent of all previous Xbox 360 titles at the same point in their release cycles." Granted, Black Ops II also sits at 99 percent, and Nielsen said it's only 0.25 percent behind, so the difference is indeed very, very slim. Also, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed III ranks quite high with 98 percent.
The true judge on Xbox 360 to see whether Halo 4 or Call of Duty wins out will not only be sales, but Xbox Live usage stats. We'll keep an eye on those this holiday season.
On the PS3, it's interesting to note that the most anticipated games do not include any exclusives, other than LittleBigPlanet Karting, which just made it at #10. As for the Wii, it's no shock to see that dance and fitness games continue to drive the Nintendo platform.

UPDATE: Microsoft confirms temporary promotions on many 4GB and 250GB console packs
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
October's hardware sales figures could be in for a much-needed boost, as an official $20 price cut for Nintendo's Wii has been followed up by an apparent $50 drop for Microsoft's Xbox 360 bundles.
Major US retailers including GameStop, Amazon, andWal Mart have all trimmed the prices of their standard 4GB Kinect and 250GB hardware bundles. The 4GB Kinect bundles and some non-Kinect 250GB systems have fallen from $299 to $249. The 250GB Kinect systems have been cut from $399 to $349.
The rollback has been applied to a number of different promotional packages featuring a variety of additional pack-in games, including Kinect Sports, DisneyLand Adventures, Carnival Games: Monkey See Monkey Do, Dance Central 2, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13. At least one limited edition console also appears to be included in the sale, as GameStop and Amazon are offering preorders of the Halo 4 250GB Xbox 360 bundle for $349, down from a $399 suggested retail price.
UPDATE: Microsoft has confirmed the $50 drop is a temporary price promotion for the holidays at participating retailers. It applies to the basic 250GB Xbox 360 as well as the Kinect bundles featuring 4GB and 250GB versions of the console.

Virtual JaguarX v0.9 is released. Virtual JaguarX is an Atari Jaguar emulator for Xbox. It is a port of an old version of the Virtual Jaguar emulator (v1.0.5) with some improvements taken from later versions.
Virtual JaguarX is an Atari Jaguar emulator for Xbox. It is a port of an old version of the Virtual Jaguar emulator (v1.0.5) with some improvements taken from later versions.
Please, be aware that the compatibility and performance of this emulator are not very high!!
compatibilty
The sound emulation is disabled by default to make the emulation faster (although you can turn on the sound if you want).
With the sound disabled, you can play at full speed (or at least at playable speeed) to some games: Rayman, Flashback, Zool 2, Command and Conquer, Sensible Soccer International, and maybe a few more. I am not sure about Tempest 2000, it seems playable too.
There are other games that run at full speed too, but they occasionally hang: Double Dragon 5, or Raiden.
Other games can be played but they are slow, so you have to use Frameskip (usually Frameskip 1 or 2) to be able to play them: Alien vs Predator, Pitfall, Atari Karts, Dragon, Bubsy in Fractured Furry Tails...
And finally, many other games don't load at all
sound emulation
If you want to play with sound, you have two different choices:
* On the one hand, you can enable "real sound", but the emulator will run too slow if you don't have a modified Xbox. So, if you choose to have "real sound", you must use Frameskip too.
* On the other hand, you can choose "overclocked sound" (you can choose to overclock the sound processor x2, x3 or even x4). Overclocked sound has very low quality, but its speed is higher.
Example: if you want to play Command and Conquer, you can do it in three ways:
1) You can play it at full speed without sound (no frameskip is needed)
2) You can choose "real sound", but you must use Frameskip 2
3) You can choose "overclocked sound x2" or "overclocked sound x3" and play the game at full speed without Frameskip.
Each game has its own optimal choice. In this example (Command and Conquer) the last option is good: overclocked sound is very bad as far as music is concerned, but it's very good as far as SFX sounds is related. So, if you choose "overclocked sound" in Command and Conquer, you will listen at the begining a very ugly roar, then a very ugly title song... and after that, the gameplay is almost perfect, because all the SFX sounds (ARGH!, OUCH!, BANG! and so on) are played very well during the game.
Note that some games will require both "overclocked sound" AND frameskip if you want to play at full speed with sound (for example, Alien vs Predator)
rare cases
There are some rare games that need a special configuration to run. For example, the game NBA JAM needs sound emulation to be played. In NBA JAM, I recommend using "overclocked sound" AND Frameskip 2 TOO, and you can play it at a decent speed. It is a very weird game...
Roms MUST be placed in the /roms directory, as Virtual JaguarX v0.9 has a very limited GUI, but future releases of this emulator may use a different and wonderfull interface (thanks to the Surreal64 CE team!) so you will be able to put roms wherever you want. But this version must read the roms from the "/roms" folder. Lots of formats are valid, even zipped roms (if you have troubles with a zip, read the final part of this description). Furthermore: be sure that the "/roms" directory contains at least one rom, or the emulator will crash.
key mapping
As far as the key mapping is related, you know that the Jaguar has 3 standard buttons (A, B and C) and a numeric keypad. The standard buttons are the most used, and they are mapped in the Xbox buttons A, B and X. After that, we must decide which is the better way to map the numeric pad. At the moment I have mapped the buttons in this way: START = 0, Y = 1, Black = 2, White = 3, Left Trigger = 4, Right Trigger = 5, dPad UP = 6, dPad Right = 7, dPad Down = 8, dPad Left = 9. Anyways, feedback will be very well received, to discuss the best way to map all these buttons.
You can exit of the game pressing START+BACK simmultaneously. This is the correct way to exit of a game (if you simply turn off the console, maybe you think that you have saved your progress in a game, but it has not been saved yet!).
You can launch a very limited in-game menu pressing the right stick to change the frameskip. At the moment there are only two options that can be configured by the user:
* Frameskip: The default value is ZERO, because many games run at full speed (or at least at playable speed) without using frameskip. But if you play a game that runs slow, maybe increasing the frameskip can help a bit to make the game playable. Please, be warned that increasing the frameskip in the middle of the game is possible, but decreasing frameskip in the middle of the game can make it crash (you probably will have to re-launch the rom).
* Sound emulation: It is disabled by default because it makes all the games run slow, sometimes they crash, and the sound is choppy. But I have included the option to enable real sound (you will need frameskip, as it is slow!) or overclocked sound. Read above for sound emulation details.
FAQ
Q: What about CD support?
A: At the moment it is not supported, sorry.
Q: My rom (in ZIP format) did not work!
A: There are lots of formats valid for this emulator (JAG, J64, BIN...) and it has been added the possibility to compress them in ZIP format, but this ZIP support is very basic: each ZIP file can only have ONE file inside. If you have a ZIP file which contains more than one file, it will probably not work. Besides, I have found roms in internet whose zip file was corrupt. So, my advice if you are having troubles with a compressed rom, is to uncompress it.

Console, tablet, phone and PC service begins roll-out tomorrow
Microsoft begins the launch of Xbox Music tomorrow, offering 30 million songs for users to stream to their Xbox 360, PC, phone and tablet devices.
The service will offer a number of free features including streaming music on Windows 8 and Windows RT.
But Xbox 360 owners will need to pay a monthly £8.99 / $9.99 fee on top of a Gold subscription for ad-free songs with unlimited playback on the console, as well as access to "tens of thousands" of music videos.
"The launch of Xbox Music is a milestone in simplifying digital music on every type of device and on a global scale," said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.
"We're breaking down the walls that fracture your music experiences today to ensure that music is better and integrated across the screens that you care about most - your tablet, PC, phone and TV."
The service goes live on Xbox 360 tomorrow alongside a dashboard update and later this month with the launch of Windows 8 on October 26.
At a later date Microsoft is promising cloud storage, social features and expansion to other platforms.
