It's speculated that winter '07 may see the first price cut for Xbox 360.
Microsoft Game Studios' corporate vice president Shane Kim has spoken of the need for Microsoft to steer toward a mass-market price for its console and how it's extremely important for Xbox 360 to win this Christmas, 1UP reports.
Speaking about the mass-market price sweet spot, Kim said that previously a considerable percentage of overall business has occurred when consoles have hit $199 or below, but added that what's happened historically won't necessarily dictate mass-market pricing today.
"If you look back in history - again, it's not just going to follow what's in history - in some cases, 75 to 80 percent of the business gets done $199 and below. So, we're not quite there yet", Kim said.
"I think that number can change over time because of inflation, greater capabilities; what we can do what Xbox 360, even the core system, is far beyond what you could do before in previous generations. Who knows? Maybe $249 will be a mass-market price point - but historically, $199 has been when you're talking a PlayStation 2-like install base. 80 percent of the business gets done at $199 and below. We're like the other guys, right?"
Kim went on to explain that Microsoft is trying to drive costs out of the system as much as possible "so we can hit those price points."
Earlier this week reports hit that Microsoft's production cost initiative with Xbox 360 has been codenamed Falcon, with a revised model said to feature new central and graphics processors that are manufactured in a 65-nanometer production process (as opposed to the older 90-nanometer processors in current models).
When asked whether Microsoft is going to move toward a mass-market price with Xbox 360 this year, Kim replied, "Stay tuned".
So, ah, stay tuned.

Admist all the E3 hype and fluff, Microsoft snuck out the latest of its Backward Compatibility updates, with some of the very best Xbox games ever made now fully compatible with the Xbox 360.
Top of a lot of people's (i.e. Tom's) list will be OutRun 2 and its delightful follow-up OutRun 2006: Coast To Coast, but even better (in my opinion) is the news that Project Gotham Racing and Project Gotham Racing 2 have finally joined the BC list. About time too. Really.
Elsewhere on the list, Oblivion fans looking for another Xbox RPG fix might want to check out The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. We gave it a respectable 8/10 upon its PC release five years ago, and many RPG fans rate it extremely highly. I picked up a copy on Xbox for £3 recently, so have a poke around in the bargain buckets and see what you reckon.
Also worth checking out is the original Burnout - but maybe only to remind yourself just how far the series has come. Other items of interest are Doom III: Resurrection of Evil, Full Spectrum Warrior: 10 Hammers, Jet Set Radio Future (which was supposed to work last time around, but didn't), Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Mech Assault 2, MotoGP 2, Silent Hill 2, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X and 3.
In total, the list has grown by almost 70 titles, although, to be honest, most of these newly compatible games are ones you'd never want to darken your doorstep ever again. Blinx 2? Without Warning? Rogue Ops? Bloodrayne 2? Auto Modelista? Nurse!
For the full list, head to the official site, though bear in mind this is the US list. No-one's bothered to update the UK list yet, but they're generally identical from our experience.
We really do wish someone from the BC team would finally sort out Project Zero for Europe, though. Are you reading Microsoft? What about Rallisport Challenge 2? Psi Ops? Kung Fu Chaos? Freedom Fighters? Oddworld Stranger's Wrath? Otogi? Midtown Madness 3? Galleon? Indiana Jones? Voodoo Vince? Deus Ex Invisible War? TOCA Race Driver 2 or 3?

In all the furore of E3 you may have overlooked the release of four new demos for download from Xbox Live.
The first of these is Blue Dragon, weighing in at a hefty 1.1GB of virtual mass. It gives you the chance to try out Microsoft's big JRPG flag-waver in two dungeons, each filled with Mecha Robos and the rather plainly named Ancient Monsters.
It's already been released in Japan and received an alarmingly positive critical reception. However, Rob Fahey wasn't as bowled over when he got to play the game recently. A difference of tastes? Now you can find out.
The full game is due out here on 24th August - pop over to our first impressions of Blue Dragon for more information.
Next up on Live is a demo for smash and crash title Stuntman: Ignition. This taster is a little smaller at 642MB, and lets you pop on your protective gear to try out the thrills and spills of being a Stuntman driver. The full version is out on 31st August and Ellie had a look at it earlier this year. Pop over to her preview to see what she thought.
Meanwhile, a demo of Ace Combat 6 was also released earlier this week - Namco's latest addition to its flight action series. Signed earlier this year by Atari, we've got a bunch of trailers and screenshots of the 360 exclusive for you to enjoy, too. Go see.
Last of the bunch is Surf's Up, the game of the upcoming animated film featuring surfing penguins - which actually looked quite good in the trailer, er, a friend told me. It's 668MB in girth and we have absolutely no idea what to make of it - probably why there's now a demo.

Sega revealed overnight that Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Ecco the Dolphin and Streets of Rage 2 will all be available on Xbox Live Arcade shortly. This will be in addition to Golden Axe and Sonic the Hedgehog, which Microsoft released on XBLA yesterday.
"Titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage 2, Ecco the Dolphin, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Golden Axe were ground-breaking in their day," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, Sega of America. "Now with their debut on Xbox Live Arcade, gamers can enjoy these classics with all new HD-enhanced graphics and online features."
Gamers will have to part with 400 Microsoft points to purchase these classics, which is a snip at £3.40. All five of the games are already available on Wii Virtual Console although at 800 Wii points, it converts at a couple of pounds more expensive (£5.36) than on XBLA.
Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will all be available as multiplayer games on XBLA. All five games will feature revamped graphics, as well as achievement points and online leader boards on Xbox Live.

Yesterday, we mentioned that two new Xbox 360 controllers would be available in pink and blue this October. We were all fine and content with the new dark and intense colors, but new photos have us second guessing ourselves. The guys over at MaxConsole posted a shot of the new controllers in their natural habitat and honestly, the pictures supplied on Xbox.com don't match. Well, they are close, because the controllers are pink and blue, but in reality the controllers are more Easter egg pastel than dark intense colors. We're officially renaming the color descriptions to "puffy cloud sky blue" and "soft and gentle I need love pink". They're perfect for baby showers too!

We all know what a tip-top-tastic RTS game Company of Heroes was so anticipation is understandably hot, hot, hot for follow-up Opposing Fronts. New screenshots have been released from E3.
A stand-alone expansion compatible with the original game, Opposing Fronts focuses on Operation Market-Garden and the battle for the liberation of Caen, France, during World War II. Players will command the British 2nd Army and the German Panzer Elite in missions.
In addition to the new single-player content, Opposing Fronts features new multiplayer modes and will support DirectX 10 out the box. It's due out this autumn.

THQ has been saving plenty of hoops of fire - and a disc-full of screenshots - for its E3 media bash this week, kicking off with the kerr-azy stunts in this fresh Stuntman Ignition media dump.
In the number department there are six films to perform in, 25 vehicles to mash up and 36 different stunts, but most promising of all is the option to go online and challenge other players to a stunt-off.
Thanks to an Xbox Live demo, you can try Ignition out for yourself right now by firing up your Xbox 360.
Look for the full game in the shops at the end of August.

We all know Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is one of the hottest PC shooters to make an appearance this year, but the game's also been lined up for a 360 debut too.
And yesterday's Activision conference didn't disappoint with Splash Damage's Paul Wedgewood joining comedian (and we use that word in its loosest sense) Jamie Kennedy to talk us through the very first footage of the game on 360. Plenty of meat to enjoy here in our patented wobbly cam footage, with Quake Wars looking every bit as fine on Microsoft's machine as in its PC incarnation.

Top Spin 3 is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 in Spring 2008, 2K Sports has revealed.
The follow-up to the 2006 Xbox 360 title once again builds on the successful Tennis series, with the usual expansive offline career mode and online play.
New to this version will be dynamic weather changes - useful if you want to postpone play all day due to rain and get Cliff Richard singing in the stands - and a host of customisation options so you can sculpt the image of your player. There's a free form body slider to adjust your shape, and you can even plaster yourself in tattoos and make-up.
"This game transcends the boundaries of what has previously been achieved in the acclaimed Top Spin franchise by ensuring every detail is accurate, from the cloud cover to lighting, from sweat to dirt on clothing, to every drop shot, slice, lob and backhand," said Christoph Hartmann, big chief at 2K.

via Eurogamer
THQ has uncovered a new game called Darksiders, which will be coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year.
It's being created by internal studio Vigil Games and dreamt-up by comic-book author Joe Madureira - best known for his work on Uncanny X-Men.
Darksiders is a third-person action adventure based around the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse - a tale from that dusty old book The Bible. But taken with a hefty dose of salt.
You see Vigil's world began with a clever-clogs being creating the universe and the Nephilim to inhabit it. But they soon got too big for their boots, so Angels were introduced because they're easier to control. A massive war ensued. In the middle of this the Four Horsemen swapped sides and helped stamp out their own race, the Nephilim.
Clever-clogs being rewards the turncoats with the eternal duty of destroying worlds. Horsemen are chuffed. All goes well for a while until the quartet are tricked and locked away - leaving all the portals they opened, er, wide open, so demons can run riot in worlds unchecked.
It's a rather grand setting and we pick up the story as our main character War escapes his prison and seeks vengeance on those that put him there.
His abilities, especially in combat, instantly conjure up God of War comparisons; hacking and slashing like Charlie Dimmock in a bed of giant weeds. But there's also puzzles to solve and items to gather like in Zelda, and a set of 12 abilities to upgrade just like in Devil May Cry.
So you could say it is a medley of some of the best games around. Oh, and with a horse you can summon even if you're in the middle of bloodying someone's nose, or jumping through the air. Add all that to some corking graphics and a dramatic comic-book feel, and you've got us interested.

Microsoft has said that the European price relationship between Xbox 360 Elite and Premium will be similar to the relationship between the two SKUs in North America.
"If you compare it to the price difference between Xbox 360 Elite and Premium in the US, you wouldn't be far off," UK marketing head Steve McGill told GamesIndustry.biz.
In North America, Xbox 360 Premium costs USD 399 while the Elite retails for USD 479. In the UK, Premium currently sells for GBP 279.
An announcement can be expected in the run-up to the Elite's launch on August 24th, and was only held back from Microsoft's E3 2007 press briefing because of the need for territories to make their preparations.
Xbox 360 Elite features a 120GB hard disk, HDMI video output and a unique black casing that sets it apart from the Xbox 360 Premium.

Not much more you can say, really. It's not looking as slick as the Killzone trailer, but then, it is using a ton of random in-game footage. Best bit? About 1:12 in. It's good to see (what I can only assume is) the Arbiter again.
