Hey, we gave you the opportunity to voice your opinion on Microsoft's original Zune back in August, so it's only fair that the new kids on the block get their turn in the ring, too. This go 'round, however, we're adding a little twist -- focus your attention on the flash-based iterations only. The diminutive Zune 4 and Zune 8 were probably more highly anticipated than their HDD-based siblings, and considering that the rumors were literally all over the map leading up to the release, we can't say anything really shocked us when launch day came and went. Granted, we were a bit bummed to find that these wouldn't feature TV outputs, but hey, at least we got the option of adding more than just two lines of text to the thing's rear, right?
By now, you've had more than ample time to give the flash-based Zune of your choice some serious play, and we're sure you've logged a couple of complaints in your mind, so here's your chance to get it all out in the open. If given the keys to the Zune 4 / 8 design lab, what changes would you implement? Add in a few more pixels? How about a few more gigabytes? Melt the whole thing down and shape it like a discus? Or is your heart still longing for the oh-so-elusive Zune phone? Whatever your wish may be, feel free to let the whole world know in comments below -- you never know who'll tune in.

Leading chip maker Intel has spoken to platform holders about the possibility of using its advanced technology in the next generation of consoles.
Intel believes that advancements in silicon chip design over the next decade will open doors to new ways of interacting with machines, and the firm has been courting console platform holders, reports Business Week.
IBM currently supplies Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft with processors for their videogame consoles. Having been trumped by IBM this time round, Intel appears intent not to miss out on the market opportunities that will arise from the coming of future generations of consoles.

Ubisoft is expecting Assassin's Creed to hit five million unit sales in its fiscal 2007 to 2008 year, which ends March 31, 2008.
Describing current sales of the roof-top hopping back-stab-'em-up as a "record performance", the publisher's said that the game topped two and a half million sales worldwide in its first four weeks on shop shelves.
Apparently it's "the fastest-selling new video game intellectual property in the US ever".
Already released on Xbox 360 and PS3 (review), a PC version of Assassin's Creed is due to release next year. Hopefully in a more finished state than the console versions.

We can't say we saw this one coming down the pike, but Microsoft has unveiled a new piece of software designed to "streamline development / testing for HD DVD content" as well as "accelerate the advancement" of next-generation interactivity (HDi, in particular). Simply put, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator allows studios the flexibility to "model the behavior of HD DVD disc content, including encoded video and HDi interactivity, in a virtual environment." When put to use, companies can purportedly cut down on coasters and wasted time, but in order to do so, they'll need an Xbox 360 + HD DVD peripheral, a connection to Xbox Live and $2,999. Thirsty for more? There's plenty where that came from.

New XNA Game Studio 2.0 From Microsoft Enables Creation of Online Multiplayer Games Using LIVE
Microsoft Corp. today marked the next step in its initiative to democratize game development and unleash the creativity of the community with the release of the XNA Game Studio 2.0, the next generation of the popular game development platform for Xbox 360 and Windows. The new version builds upon XNA Game Studio Express, released one year ago, and includes the ability to create online, cross-platform multiplayer games for Xbox 360 and Windows using Xbox LIVE and Games for Windows -- LIVE, respectively. XNA Game Studio 2.0 adds more than 15 new features and is available for download from http://creators.xna.com.
"When building XNA Game Studio 2.0, we wanted to offer everyone the opportunity to utilize the rich gaming environment of LIVE used by AAA developers for titles such as 'Halo 3' and 'Gears of War,'" said Chris Satchell, general manager of the XNA organization at Microsoft. "We accomplished our goal with this new toolset, and, best of all, it remains highly accessible to students, hobbyists and pros alike."
Many of LIVE's best features are supported by XNA Game Studio 2.0 with minimal to no coding necessary to activate them -- features like matchmaking, which uses LIVE to find the best games for you to play based on your location and internet connection. Additionally, XNA Game Studio 2.0 fully supports game development with all versions of the Microsoft Visual Studio product line.
XNA Creators Club Academic Trial Memberships Now Free to Qualified Students and Faculty
Since its release last December, XNA Game Studio has been an incredible success, with 750,000 downloads, adoption by more than 300 universities worldwide and at least nine textbooks on the tools in development. In subjects from computer science to fine arts, introductory courses to graduate and research projects -- XNA Game Studio is helping faculty members and students explore the boundaries of applied gaming technology in education. Along with XNA Game Studio 2.0, Microsoft will also provide a free academic trial membership in the XNA Creators Club beginning in January, allowing faculty members and students to use XNA Game Studio 2.0 and Xbox 360 for instructional purposes.
Time to Dream-Build-Play Again
From more than 4,500 entrants from around the world, four community games were awarded Xbox LIVE Arcade publishing contracts in this year's Dream-Build-Play game development competition. Microsoft will once again challenge aspiring game developers to create their dream games for a chance to win more coveted publishing contracts. This week Microsoft kicks off registration for Dream-Build-Play 2008 with the Silicon Minds Warm-Up Challenge. Registration begins on Dec. 14 and winners will be announced at the Game Developers Conference where details of the main challenge will be announced. Run in partnership with Microsoft Research's Machine Learning Group in Cambridge, England; Rare Ltd.; and Lionhead Studios, prizes for the Warm-Up Challenge will include the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview for an internship with one of those organizations.
"Artificial intelligence is so important to the games we make at Lionhead Studios, and we are very excited to see what the community can come up with in this Warm-Up Challenge to Dream-Build-Play 2008," said Peter Molyneux, managing director at Lionhead Studios. "We are always on the lookout for the best talent and believe that XNA Game Studio 2.0 will be a great platform for contestants to showcase their skills on." Microsoft comes out on top in annual poll; Supermarkets and new release discounting cited as biggest problems
After a storming year of success, Microsoft took the lion's share of the praise in the 2007 MCV Retail Survey, with Nintendo also attracting a great deal of commendation from video game stores all across the country.
The star-studded release of Halo 3 - which saw high calibre celebrity endorsement from the likes of Pharrell Williams and Christian Slater - put Microsoft top of the list in the 'highlight of the year' poll, while also winning 'best attitude and quality to retail' and 'best overall company'. The survey also considered Xbox 360 most likely to win the next-gen console battle.

Japanese Xbox boss Takashi Sensui has said that the Xbox 360's 2008 game push "may" be spear-headed by a sequel to Mistwalker RPG Blue Dragon.
In an interview with Jiji Press, the Japan home and entertainment boss said that Microsoft is aiming to double its number of Xbox 360 games in Japan to 500 next year and hinted that a sequel to the Sakaguchi RPG might be the front runner.
Of course it's not the first time we've heard strong rumours of a follow up, Mistwalker boss Hironobu Sakaguchi reaffirmed in April that he has strong desire to kick off the second Blue Dragon.
"We're in talks with Microsoft about development of a sequel," the Final Fantasy said at a Korean press conference. "Specifics aren't finalized, but there's a possibility that it will be produced as an online title."
There are also reports of a Nintendo DS version in the works, which is a no-brainer considering the handheld's license to print money in Japan.
Good news for RPG fans, as the first game was a brilliant - if overlooked - genre entry in the Xbox's sparse catalogue of role-playing games. Lets hope they get the follow up to Europe before 2009.

via Games Industry
Having established Xbox Live Arcade as the leader in downloadable content for consoles, Microsoft is looking to be the first to successfully deliver episodic and user created content as the next evolution of the service.
With retro, brand new IP and advergames already part of the offering, David Edery, worldwide games portfolio planner for XBLA, has told GamesIndustry.biz about a number of options that the company is actively pursuing to keep ahead of competition from Sony's PlayStation Network and Nintendo's Wii Ware.
"We have some really big initiatives going on right now and I can say that everyone internally is really excited about user created content," said Edery.
"Multiple internal groups are trying to think about the best way of supporting it on the console and I can tell you for sure that things are happening, I just don't know if we'll see any of them in the next 12 months," he said.
While Microsoft is working on internal architecture to deliver user generated content – whether to support its XNA Studio creations or something more playful like Sony's LittleBigPlanet – it's also encouraging potential Arcade developers to look at the true potential of episodic gaming.
"We're really excited about trying to bring episodic content to XBLA," enthused Edery. "We haven't really done it yet and we're trying to think of the best ways to do so.
"The Penny Arcade guys are going to be bringing their episodic game to Xbox Live Arcade but I think of that as only the beginning – it's just one model for episodic and there are lots of different models."
Conceding that the market hasn't yet seen episodic content in the same context as episodic TV – half an hour to an hour long shows delivered weekly – Edery says that as soon as the right quality titles come along, Microsoft wants to continue to push the boundaries of digital delivery.
"It's an obvious statement but we don't want to put out bad content. We need to see a really, really good episodic franchise before we go ahead and throw a bunch of half an hour or hourly gameplay episodes on our service.
"The day a developer comes to us with that is the day we'll sign it. We're making it clear that we're very open to this sort of thing," he said.
Edery also accepts that new delivery methods are going to be met with a little bit of trepidation, at least until they can be proven to be a reliable and convincing route to market.
"Game developers are not used to thinking and designing in this way, it's a fundamentally different process and I think it's just a learning thing where developers and ourselves need to experiment and figure out what works and what doesn't.
"There's also a certain amount of fear, frankly. If you're an independent developer betting your company on this, something that has never been done successfully before, it's scary when there are literally no good examples of successful episodic gaming," he concluded.

An 800 MB demo for Burnout Paradise is now up on Xbox Live. But if you're stuck at work and don't play games for a living, allow us to brag a little and show you some in-game footage.
As you'll see, it's all good so far. We were recently at EA's HQ for a more in depth session and liked what we saw.
Here's a clip:
"Paradise is a very different Burnout game. The biggest change is that it's jumping on the free-roaming city bandwagon that every current-gen racing game seems to parade with such enthusiasm these days.
"Unlike your Test Drives and Midnight Clubs though, the metropolis in Burnout Paradise has truly been designed for a wealth of things to do inside your motor."

THQ and Kaos Studios' upcoming first-person shooter Frontlines: Fuel of War has popped up on Xbox Live today in demo form.
It will invade and occupy 1.69GB of your hard disk space before showing you a vision of a world ravaged by a global energy crisis, environmental decay, economic depression, and a lack of Wagon Wheels.
There's no immediate word on what the demo shows off specifically, but for more of an idea of what to expect from Frontlines overall, you might want to investigate Kristan's recent report from the frontlines of Frontlines.
His harrowing experience (at one point he had to walk from his hotel to a shop to buy a digital camera) includes information on the single-player campaign and the multiplayer, and a reminder that Kaos Studios formed out of the remnants of Trauma Studios - a former DICE satellite best known for excellent Battlefield 1942 mod Desert Combat.
So Frontlines could well be very good. You'll have a better idea once you've played the demo, eh?
Full version's due out on PC and 360 on 15th February with a PS3 version scheduled for April.

Microsoft's UK head of gaming and entertainment talks about the rollout of Xbox Live Video Marketplace in the UK at the launch event in London.
* GSUK: Are you pleased with the fact that Xboxes, which as you say may be on many people's lists, are actually available in stores? Is that something you've worked hard towards?
* SM: It is. We're struggling to meet the demand from every retailer every week. I think we've probably done it better than some of our cohorts out there, but it's a weekly thing--we're getting stock in, we're getting it straight out to the retailers who need it. Obviously we've got three different varieties: We've got the Arcade, the main 360, and the Elite. They're going to different types of customers, and different retail outlets.
It's a fun time, Christmas; part of the difficulty is actually finding enough vans to ship it all around, so a lot of planning goes into that.
* GSUK: In terms of the movies, you mentioned there will be 40 titles by Christmas. For the rollout next year, will it be one movie at a time, or will it be big chunks? How do you see that happening?
* SM: It's difficult to say--it probably won't be as organised as that. We're starting with 27 for tomorrow, and then over the next week or two, we'll be adding more and more stuff. Some of the team--they'll have Christmas Day off, but then they'll be back in the office ingesting more content for us. I think we'll have, obviously, things like Ocean's 13, and some more Harry Potter stuff, early in 2008. There's kind of a window between when you can go and see a movie, rent it on DVD, then it can go on video-on-demand, then when it goes onto satellite [TV], then when it goes onto normal free TV, and then when it comes back as back catalogue for anyone to use.
We've got an amazing partner with Warner Bros, and they've got a great back catalogue of stuff, of great movies ready for launch. We'll have more of that content from them coming on board and then we'll have more partnerships as time goes by.

The Xbox Live Video Store has opened its digital doors for the first time outside of the US - in the UK, Canada and selected European territories.
To find out why it took to long to leave US boundaries, and what the future holds for the service, GamesIndustry spent some time with Stephen McGill, Microsoft's head of Gaming and Entertainment UK, and Robin Burrowes, Xbox Live marketing manager for the UK.
* GamesIndustry.biz: Why has it taken so long for the Video Store to make it from the US?
* Robin Burrowes: It's just readiness really, making sure that what we've got is absolutely right. We were always going to launch it before the end of 2007, it was industry expectation rather than anything else to be honest. We were always going to deliver this by the end of 2007 so we've kept to our promise.
* Stephen McGill: And also from the technical point of view we needed to get the recent update out there ready for the service. We could have launched last week but we decided to have a little bit of a gap. That was a pretty big update, we've got a lot of great new stuff for consumers.
* There were some comments made recently by Michael Bay, who felt that Microsoft might be opting for a different strategy, bypassing the next-generation of DVDs altogether and opting for a download-only service in the long term. What would you say to that?
* SM: I didn't read his comments, although I heard about them, but hey, he's allowed his personal thoughts - I think he clarified some of those thoughts about 24 hours later - but for us we're focused on HD-DVD movies working with great partners, and we wouldn't have that offer for five free movies if we didn't believe in that format.
But we also believe in downloadable content, whether it's music, or movies - it's not about one solution, because one solution isn't going to work for everybody.

While Europe was surely happy about the launch of Xbox 360's Video Marketplace, Microsoft has admitted that, unfortunately, there are a few problems arising. Current issues include downloads not completing, slow file transfers, error messages, and this is my personal favorite, the wrong media downloading. Times like this make me sad that hardcore pornography isn't offered alongside Disney flicks.
Microsoft apologizes for any inconvenience and is investigating the matter in full. But since these problems remind me a lot of the US roll out of Video Marketplace, I'm guessing they won't be permanent.

Sales news is starting to trickle out for some of the big Fall games, with the Xbox 360 so far looking very strong. BioWare's Mass Effect has sold a million copies, while Bungie's blockbuster Halo 3 has already sold over five million copies since its September 25th release date. That last figure comes from a GameDaily interview with Xbox Marketing VP Jeff Bell. Aside from noting this week's release of Halo 3's first downloadable map pack, Bell also connected these sales back to the console itself:
"The reaction has been very positive. In fact, we saw incredible sales of Xbox 360 for the week of November 18, including Black Friday of more than 310,000 Xbox 360 in the U.S. alone. This is really strong momentum for us given that we're already in our third year on the market."

Propaganda Games, developer of the new Turok game, has told CVG that it is looking at creating a fix to remove the team-killing Grab Bag achievement that caused riots a few weeks ago.
The Grab Bag achievement, dubbed the 'Worst Achievement Ever' by the internet, gives you ten points if you ""kill at least 1 creature, 1 enemy, 1 teammate, and yourself in the same round of a public match," encouraging the ultra-infuriating practice of team killing.
Josh Holmes, VP of Propaganda Games, told CVG explained why such an achievement was added. "What we found was that players playing their first match in Turok - almost every player - was (accidentally) killing himself, a team mate and an enemy with a grenade or a Stick Bomb gun and so we thought 'hey, we should give them an achievement for that', as kind of a joke.
But those frustrated with 'Acheivement whores messing up team games for achievements in games like Halo 3 didn't find it funny.
"We've read some of the concerns that were described online, and maybe we underestimated the length to which so-called 'achievement whores' will go to [in order to] get their achievements," admitted Holmes.
"We are currently looking at readying a patch or solution for it if it does become an issue when the game releases," he added.
Interestingly, he goes on to discuss the general topic of online multiplayer achievements.
"I saw a lot of opinions expressed on forums and a lot of the comments on the stories that came out about the achievements. There's a lot of discussion on whether multiplayer achievements are good at all.
"Personally, from my experience, the people that I know that are really concerned with achievements in multiplayer are people that will set up a private match with their friends and try to accomplish the achievements within that framework. They won't go into a public match and try to disrupt the game by focussing on their achievements at the exclusion of helping their team," Holmes added.
"On one hand, it's something that encourages more people to actually play multiplayer, and therefore it introduces more people to the multiplayer experience and increases the community playing online. On the other hand, while they're 'achievement whore-ing', maybe it's screwing up the way that they play, and that's not a good thing."

Microsoft has rejected claims by film director Michael Bay that it wants HD-DVD and Blu-ray to fail "so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads".
"I didn't read his comments, although I heard about them, but hey, he's allowed his personal thoughts - I think he clarified some of those thoughts about 24 hours later - but for us we're focused on HD-DVD movies working with great partners, and we wouldn't have that offer for five free movies if we didn't believe in that format," Stephen McGill, Microsoft's head of Gaming and Entertainment UK, told GamesIndustry.biz at the launch of Xbox Live Video Store.
"But we also believe in downloadable content, whether it's music, or movies - it's not about one solution, because one solution isn't going to work for everybody."
Bay had a moan on an "Ask Michael Bay" forum (why, Michael? Just why?) when asked about the high-definition formats his films appeared on. "What you don't understand is corporate politics. Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about," he wrote.
"That is why Microsoft is handing out USD 100 million cheques to studios just embrace the HD-DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu-ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."
A little while later he wrote on the same forum that he knew what worked best for his film because he, er, made it, and he reckons it's Blu-ray. "But that said," he added, "I don't a care about this format war because I have both formats in my screening room - I'm just filling you in on what people deep in the film industry feel ultimately is going on."
