New Xbox 360 family functions will give parents more control.
By Mike Smith
Concerned about your child's gaming habits? Your life is about to be made easier -- at least, if your family owns an Xbox 360. Microsoft, the console's manufacturer, plans to include a "Family Timer" in the 360's Fall System Update, due to roll out to all Internet-connected consoles on December 4.
The Family Timer, a feature that's unique to the Xbox 360, allows parents to set a maximum amount of daily or weekly time that their kids can use the console. The unfortunate youth will receive a series of warnings as their time expires before being kicked out when the countdown reaches zero. Parents can override the timer if they feel their offspring deserves extra gaming privileges, or disable it altogether if they fancy a little play once the kids are in bed.
Downloading the update will be automatic if your Xbox is connected to a broadband network, and the update process should take less than a minute, Microsoft's Group Project Manager Adam Greenberg told Yahoo!. Once downloaded, parents can find the Family Timer settings by going to the "System" blade of their console's main menu. The timer can be set in 15-minute increments, and you can always ask the kids for help -- although you may not want to let them know what you're planning to do.
The Fall System Update also includes a host of new features intended to improve the console's online abilities and media playing functions. Subscribers to Microsoft's Xbox Live service will be able to browse each other's friends lists, in an attempt to bring some of the social networking functions of sites like Myspace to the Xbox network. The console will be able to play videos in a wider range of formats, including the popular Xvid and Divx codecs. And in a move that's sure to please fans of Microsoft's original Xbox, gamers will now be able to download a handful of complete Xbox games, including the original Halo, Crimson Skies, and critical darling Psychonauts, each for $15.
Greenburg also addressed some shortcomings of the Xbox Live service that the Fall Update won't fix. Currently, subscribers can add a maximum of 50 fellow gamers to their Friends list, allowing them to view each other's online status and other information, and that's not enough for many extroverted Xbox enthusiasts. "Increasing it is not as simple as just flicking a switch," he told us, but work is continuing to allow maxed-out gamers to add more contacts.
Microsoft's update comes amid record sales for the Xbox 360. "A lot of retailers stocked out last week," Greenberg told us: more than 310,000 units made their way home with shoppers over the Black Friday period, and Microsoft-exclusive hits like Mass Effect and Halo 3 are also riding high in the sales charts. The Xbox 360 faces strong competition from Sony's PlayStation 3, which posted a 245% increase over last year's Black Friday sales, and Nintendo's Wii, which continues to be hard to find in many regions over a year after its launch.

As if the last two reports about a 32GB Zen from Creative weren't enough for you, here's another for a lazy Saturday. This time, Crave claims to have an unspecified confirmation that a 2GB and 32GB Zen is coming, and it's coming in flash form. Would that make this the highest capacity flash PMP out there? It'd certainly be pipping Sansa to the post.

Fable 2 will be released in "late 2008", Peter Molyneux told Eurogamer readers today in a wide-ranging LiveText interview.
When pressed to be more specific, he added: "Late 2008. Maybe when the leaves have a slight brownish tinge - but are still on the trees, if you see what I mean." Fable 2 is Lionhead's Xbox 360-exclusive follow-up to the critically acclaimed Xbox ARPG Fable.
Molyneux also dropped hints about what else the British developer - now Microsoft-owned - is working on. "We are working on a title now which is kind of a hybrid of Dimitri," he told Eurogamer readers.
"I am really, really pushing the powers-that-be to allow me to tell/show the world this new project. I know I am prone to say things like 'great', 'revolutionary' and 'ambitious', but this new project its absolutely great, revolutionary and ambitious!"
Other highlights of Molyneux's chat with Eurogamer readers:- The name of Lionhead's second project quite possibly begins with "Mi" - the rest got snipped by a buffer in our interview system and then he thought better of revealing it!
- He's interested in developing simulation and God games for the DS, and said he would love to do Dungeon Keeper DS if EA gave him the rights back.
- The game he most enjoyed this year - "mainly because of the environment and story" - was BioShock.
- He would consider working on somebody else's property rather than original IP providing Lionhead was given "creative freedom to take the licence in any direction".
- He says the Xbox 360 is the best console he's ever worked on. "I have to be diplomatic, but that is true."
- He believes that within the next ten years a game will be considered "a major scientific breakthrough".
- He would rather be invisible than have lasers for eyes.

Forza 2 developer Turn 10 is preparing to unleash new download content for the Xbox 360 racing game.
Although the studio has yet to divulge full details, it's said it's getting ready "all sorts of goodies for our upcoming car and track DLC release".
So we're willing to be our Rockstar Presents Table Tennis ping pong ball that new cars and tracks will feature in the latest content.
Full details should be revealed today in a Turn 10 Pitpass Report.
The last batch of Forza 2 DLC was released last month. It included four "variations" of Japan's Twin Ring Motegi course - basically the same tracks with different ways to drive around them (and it cost £5.10 too).

Xbox 360s have been used in the US to lure over a hundred crooks out of hiding and subsequently into the slammer.
Working jointly with the El Paso police, US Marshals led criminals to a crackdown location in Texas with the belief that they had won an Xbox 360.
Anyone stupid enough to come and claim their winnings was instead stuck in handcuffs and sent to prison, where the only Achievements they'll be unlocking are "performed sexual favours for cigarettes," and "fathered a pet mouse called Mr. Jingles."
According to police chief Richard Wiles, the sting resulted in 115 arrests and cleared 129 warrants. Most of the criminals were wanted on drug or violent crime charges.
Considering they were able to fall for the stunt, most them are probably wondering where their Xbox 360s are right now.

During the week after the Thanksgiving holiday, Microsoft sold 310,000 Xbox 360 consoles in the US.
That's nearly the same number of units it sold during the entire month of October, when 366,000 Xbox 360 consoles were purchased.
According to a CNBC article, Microsoft's system outsold the PlayStation 3 during the week after "Black Friday" by a margin of 2 to 1.
Nintendo still came out on top, however, with 350,000 Wii consoles sold.
Even so, Microsoft reports that its software is on track to outsell the PS3 and Wii software combined. According to NPD data, Xbox 360 software represented 54 per cent of total software sales for October, with 30 per cent for the Wii and 16 per cent for the PS3.
UPDATE: An SCEA spokesperson disputed Microsoft's assertion that the Xbox 360 had outsold the PS3 2 to 1, but stated that it was company policy not to disclose specific sales until NPD data is officially released

After introducing himself by saying "[censored], it's rubbish, I hate the whole thing", the Sex Pistols singer then goes into the reason why he's there - to promote Guitar Hero III.
"I'll give it to you basic and honest," he says. "The offer came in and I took it home and I played it with a bunch of kids. What I like is it weren't teaching you how to be a rock star, it was teaching you how not to be a rock star..."

Some great news for Rock Band fans from Harmonix today. They wrote to tell us that gamers who are experiencing problems with their guitars (or any of the Rock Band instruments) should contact EA's customer support website and they will send out a replacement immediately.
"As sometimes happens when new products first go into manufacturing, we discovered an imperfection with the strum bar in an early production run of guitars that were shipped at launch. We've since identified and fixed the issue in all subsequent production runs of the guitars. If users are experiencing a problem with their guitars or any of the Rock Band instruments, they can visit the customer support website ( http://support.ea.com/rockband) and we will send a replacement immediately. Harmonix is dedicated to creating 100% customer satisfaction and to the users who have encountered any hardware issues, we are sorry for the hassle."

The following are some North American top 10 lists of units sold relative to the install base for the particular console system(s) the titles were released for. In other words, the percentage states the percent of owners of a particular console that bought the game.
Xbox 360 (8,805,238 systems sold)
1. Halo 3 (47.4%)
2. Gears of War (34.4%)
3. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (15.9%)
4. Guitar Hero II (15.4%)
5. Forza Motorsport 2 (15.0%)
6. Madden NFL 08 (14.7%)
7. Marvel Ultimate Alliance (13.8%)
8. Rainbow Six: Vegas (13.8%)
9. Call of Duty 3 (13.4%)
10. Fight Night Round 3 (12.7%)
Aside from Halo 3 and Gears of War, although the attachment rate of the other top selling games are only within the 12 - 16 % range, when considering the number of 360 owners, there are quite a few games selling a lot of units. With the way Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, and Call of Duty 4 have been selling, it is likely that they will soon land a spot on this list.

2007 will be a year to remember for Xbox 360 players - a packed release schedule offers a wide range of incredible titles including exclusive, genre-defining games such as Blue Dragon, Project Gotham Racing 4, Naruto Rise of a Ninja , Viva Piñata: Party Animals, Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation and Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action, not to mention some of the highest scoring games of all time in the form of BioShock , Mass Effect , The Orange Box and the legendary Halo 3 , all of which have already been released or are set to arrive before the end of the year.
From the end of summer to the festive period, Xbox 360 boasts over 60 new releases contributing to a portfolio of over 300 high-definition titles.
Two of the most epic adventures of the year arrived in August in Blue Dragon and BioShock. Role-playing game Blue Dragon casts players as Shu, a young boy, who with a party of four must battle the evil that has invaded their world, controlling phantom shadow creatures ranging from Minotaur, to phoenix and of course, dragon.
BioShock is a "genetically-enhanced" first person shooter that lets players do things never before possible in the genre, in the unique art deco world of Rapture, an underwater utopia torn apart by civil war.
September and October were the hottest months since records began seeing the release of the epic Halo 3 and the turbocharged Project Gotham Racing 4.
Halo 3, the third and final chapter in the "Halo trilogy" smashed day-one entertainment sales records when it launched in September with players finally getting the chance to take Master Chief™ into his most crucial battle yet.
October saw Project Gotham Racing 4 return with another garage-full of the world's most iconic cars. A brand new dynamic weather system makes for an even more exhilarating experience.
Football fans are enjoying a season of highlights on Xbox 360 with the release of FIFA 08 at the end of September and Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 at the end of October.
FIFA 08 brings you closer to the action than ever before with new Pro Skills moves that increase user-control by enabling you to combine tricks and skill moves together to recreate signature moves from the real-world superstars, the new Be A Pro: Offline Training mode, and even greater depths of authenticity, while Konami's latest edition to the multi-million-selling Pro Evolution Soccer series returns as PES 2008, boasting a proprietary AI system, all new moves and set pieces - and even more realism than ever. PES 2008's rosters of licensed players enjoy a wide range of flicks, nutmegs, and set-pieces, while the less savoury elements of the game appear in the form of shirt-pulling, ugly fouls and diving.
November offers something for everyone. Mass Effect, the science-fiction action-role playing game offers a whole galaxy full of difficult decisions to make as players lead an elite team to bring down a rogue agent.
Sociable fun is also on the cards - both Viva Piñata: Party Animals and Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action offer their own unique blend of party play - Viva Piñata: Party Animals putting the colourful piñatas into a succession of addictive mini games and Scene It? offering a host of movie-related trivia to answer.
Naruto Rise of a Ninja kick flips into November featuring the perfect blend of adventure, platforming and fighting and enables fans of the show to challenge fellow gamers on Xbox LIVE®.
Finally, top guns will fulfil their aviation dreams in Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, thrusting players into the heat of realistic air combat.
The review scores garnered by many of these titles have been astounding, confirming the excellence of the Xbox 360 line up. Halo 3's score of 94 at Metacritic and 93 at Gamerankings makes it the perfect conclusion to the Halo trilogy, arriving just weeks after BioShock which wowed critics, scoring 96 and 95 at Metacritic and Gamerankings respectively.
Just when review scores looked like they couldn't get any higher The Orange Box arrived - five innovative games from Valve®, creators of the blockbuster Half-Life franchise, in one action-packed box - scoring an astonishing 96 point average at both Metacritic and Gamerankings. Finally, Mass Effect is the most recent Xbox 360 release to garner 90+ review averages claiming 93 at both sites and rounding off simply the greatest portfolio of video games ever seen. *
These unprecedented scores demonstrate exactly why Xbox 360 continues to hold the record for highest games attach rate across the globe, at 6.3 games sold per console. With life-to-date sales of 13.4 million consoles worldwide this represents incredible software sales.
BioShock, Blue Dragon, Project Gotham Racing 4, Naruto Rise of a Ninja, Viva Piñata: Party Animals, Mass Effect, Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action, FIFA 08, PES 2008, Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, The Orange Box and Halo 3 spearhead the unparalleled selection of Xbox 360 titles that players will be able to enjoy this year.
"This year's line up of titles on Xbox 360 is without doubt the strongest I have seen, offering incredible Microsoft-published titles such as Blue Dragon, PGR 4, Viva Piñata Party Animals, Mass Effect, Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action and Halo 3, and incredible exclusives from our partners such as BioShock, Naruto Rise of a Ninja and Ace Combat 6. It's an amazing year for Xbox 360 players," said Michael Newey, Group Product Marketing Manager, Microsoft.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg tells Next-Gen that top retailers had reported Xbox 360 hardware outages during Black Friday week, as the new Arcade package performs above expectations.
Microsoft announced Thursday that that Xbox 360 sold 310,000 units for the week of November 18 in the US. This compares favorably to the year-younger Nintendo Wii, which sold 350,000 units during the same time frame.
It's highly likely that the gap could've been wider if Nintendo was able to keep up with the Wii's runaway demand.
Microsoft said that it outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 2 to 1 last week, according to retail estimates.

The European Live Video Marketplace will only be available in UK, Ireland, France and Germany.
Those were the emboldened words splayed across the back of packaging for a recently bought Microsoft Points Card, keenly spotted and scanned by Joystiq.
However, Microsoft refused to comment on these territorial restrictions, possibly because of regional licensing issues for films and telly shows or maybe they're just scared.
Its appearance on packaging also suggests we may see the video on demand service before the end of the year, although MS has reportedly already revealed it will not be a part of the Autumn Live update next Tuesday.
The same packaging - making a name for itself now - also points out that you will be able to download "great movies", but fails to mention anything about shows from telly.
Video Marketplace has been available in the US since last November, and pumps out films alongside shows like Star Trek and CSI, which in the Miami version features a ginger man with a great voice.

It might not be happening immediately, but Ubisoft is clearly seeing the whole board when it tells us that Chessmaster Live will be released on XBLA in January.
Chessmaster on Live will offer hundreds of AI opponents in "ELO-ranked matches", whatever that means, voice-chat and Live Vision functions and five "original chess variants", including a "Message Chess" version which allows you to spread a game out over "days, weeks or even months".
"Chessmaster Live is not only a comprehensive chess program, but it is also one that has expanded beyond the traditional game to include exciting features for fans, both old and new," says Ubisoft's Peter Helm.
Ubisoft already published various Chessmaster games here including the recently released duo of Chessmaster: The Art of Learning on DS and Chessmaster: Grandmaster Edition on PC.

The first details have emerged on the pre-release demo of Devil May Cry 4... even if we don't have a clue when or where it's going to hit.
The ten minute demo is a mish-mash of portions from Devil May Cry 4's story, including cut-up sections from Fortuna city as well as a bit from that icy level we've seen a thousand screenshots of.
Excitingly a boss character called Berial (probably demon for 'Barry') is also said to feature. Oh Capcom, you're spoiling us!
Speculation did kick off on the net that the DMC4 demo would be coming only to Xbox Live Marketplace in December, but Capcom has since debunked the rumour as "incorrect".
"The news you're looking for is not far off... a little more patience please," posted a Capcom spokesperson on a company forum.
So it's probably coming to box Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, and news isn't far off? Let's hope we get it before Christmas.

Randy Nunez's Xbox 360 is being beaten to death by Halo 3, so that it "routinely, consistently, and systematically 'froze,' 'crashed,' or 'locked up.'" Naturally, this "disrupted game play." For his pain and suffering of having to reset his console to resume getting teabagged, he wants $5 million and class action status, 'cause "many consumers" are having these issues. Sorry. My bad. I take full responsibility for shooting people in the face that hard. I thought I was just knocking them off the internet, but apparently it's crashing their 360s too. I apologize. But seriously.
As Ars points out, Microsoft's been pretty public and all apologetic about the rampant Red Ring plague, dumping a billion dollars into seriously (and appropriately) extended warranties for repairs multiple times, and beefing up hardware to take the heat. More importantly, the Xbox 360 was killed by Halo with the candlestick in the living room connection is a thread that hasn't exactly lit up the internet or the media, and they (we) love jumping on that kind of stuff.
Our verdict? Bogus and unnecessary. We sentence you to death by Needler. Before they put it on steroids.
