Microsoft plans to create a big new campus in Redmond for its Entertainment and Devices Division, including its Xbox business, and if one aspect of the building design accurately reflects the company's intentions, it will include a rather unusual employee amenity: a bar.
Microsoft is expected to publicly detail the campus plan in the coming days. The planned four-building, 1.1 million-square-foot office complex is west of state Route 520, just north of the former Eddie Bauer headquarters.
While looking through the building permits for the West Campus project at Redmond City Hall this week, I came across the schematic shown at the top of this post, laying out the design of one of the commons buildings at the center of the complex. It details a bar with capacity for 76 occupants, next to a room with two pool tables.

Now Microsoft (MSFT) introduced the Xbox in November 2001 and deliberately brought out their next machine, the 360, just four years later, in November 2005, so as to be first to market with the next generation. They kept the two models as a range for just one year, killing off the original Xbox in November 2006 when it was just five years old.
To me it looks like they killed off the original Xbox half way through its life. They could have re-engineered it to make it far cheaper to manufacture (just as Sony did with the PSOne) and kept on selling it for another five years as part of a two product line. They would have sold tens of millions of additional units if the continuing success of the Playstation 2 is anything to go by.
Now imagine the benefits if they has kept the original Xbox alive. It would have given them market presence in the massive developing countries of China and India were lower incomes favor a cheaper machine. It would have brought millions of new people to Xbox live, helping to lock them into buying future generations of Microsoft consoles. And it would have made enormous profits from the continuing sale of the Xbox game back catalogue.

DivX followed up Tuesday night's earnings report with a presentation at the JP Morgan SmMid cap conference.
I was rewarded when midway through the Q&A session, JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster coyly probed Kevin Hell about whether or not we were about to see DivX support on the Xbox 360. The question seemed to catch Hell off guard, and while his initial reaction was enthusiasm, there was something about his tone that suggested that Coster might be onto something.
Here is the exchange verbatim, but in order to appreciate the awkwardness of the exchange, you should really listen to the quote at the 24 minute mark of the presentation and make your own decision as to whether or not you hear a sense of urgency in Hell's response.
Coster - "Just a minor point here, but there was a recent Microsoft (MSFT) conference where I believe their media extender now incorporates the DivX codec on it, is that correct? Can you confirm that and does that mean we're soon going to see Xboxes with DivX on them?
Hell - "Yes! that, uh, we're in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can't go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time."
At that point DivX CFO Dan Halvorson jumped in and quickly changed the subject.

Halo 3's out, Bungie's off the MS leash, but there's no time for rest as studio manager Harold Ryan reveals the developer is already hard at work on not one but two new IPs, and new Halo games.
"We're actively engaged with the senior staff here on a couple of new IPs right now, but the team that can generate cool Halo games is still running full-speed as well," Ryan has revealed in an interview with Develop magazine.
Speaking about Halo and the split with Microsoft, he said, "Obviously Microsoft wanted us to make more Halo games. Both I and some of the more senior guys from the original Halo game have deep piles of game designs for the Halo universe that we are excited to build at some point".
"If the stars align and motivations are good and the platforms are right we'll do them," he teased.
He explained that new game prototypes created during the development of Halo 2 were ditched to deal with the hefty workload that was Master Chief's second outing. But it's not dead and buried.
"We kept that prototype running throughout the development of Halo 3," he said, "and now we have a creative team which feels like they own that".
Ryan continued, "We also have Halo DLC on the way, and a new IP prototype that we are very excited about. Then we have other Halo games that are cranking along also. So the end result so far has been exactly as it should have been - we're happy, excited, and doing our best work on a path that lets us grow."
Get excited.

What with Gears of War launching on PC today (read our review or they won't pay me), we thought it would be a good idea to ask Mark Rein for the umpteenth time whether the five new chapters are ever going to come out on Xbox 360.
Asked if Epic is categorically never going to release them as downloads for Xbox 360 users, Rein said, "It looks that way."
Never? "Well, never say never, but I mean there's no plans to do it. The problem is the two versions aren't really compatible," he added, reiterating the previous explanation that the PC and Xbox 360 code-bases are too far removed from one another for an efficient patch.
Gears of War on PC introduces chapters that bridge the gap between events at the end of Act 4 and those that kick off Act 5. In essence (mild spoiler), it explains why they go from the house to the train. Sort of.
Gears on PC also includes a level editor and of course the ability to play with a keyboard and mouse, which we certainly appreciated, and it also allows you to get on board with Games for Windows - Live (Xbox Live for Windows) on XP as well as Vista, meaning you can unlock another 1000 points worth of Gamerscore for Gears of War if you're really that bothered.

Tesco has blamed an admin error for an online offer that bundled the Xbox 360, two games and an extra controller for just GBP 34.99 (EUR 50)
The offer was available yesterday via the supermarket's website, but was quickly pulled following an influx of orders.
"Unfortunately, there was an error in the product details at the time that you placed your order, the Wireless Entertainment Pack does not include an Xbox 360," said an email to customers waiting on their order.
"As a result we have had to cancel your order. We apologise for this error," said the retailer.

Midway's CEO David Zucker has said that Stranglehold has provided the company with an indication of its return on investment in European sales and distribution.
"If you go back a couple of years ago, we were getting less than 20 per cent of our sales out of Europe," Zucker said. "Our goal was to get to 35 per cent in 2008."
"We've gotten there this year. We've got a strong team over there."
Stranglehold has been a top-ten selling Xbox 360 title in the UK since its launch, according to Chart Trak data. Zucker said that it has also done very well in France, Germany, Italy and other territories.
He noted that Midway went direct into Germany and France about two years ago, and has always been direct in the UK. Those three territories combined represent almost 70 per cent of European sales, Zucker said.
"With our European distribution now in place, we feel really good about our ability to perform there looking ahead to 2008."
Although the company has been struggling, Zucker said that the infrastructure is in place for a turnaround.
During the past few years, the company has invested over USD 100 million in a standardised next-gen technology platform built around the Unreal Engine 3.
"We wanted to make sure that we avoided the mistake of reinventing technology for the same functionality," he said.
Midway's CEO again pointed to Stranglehold as an example of the company's 'distributed development methodology.' Although the game was developed by the flagship Chicago studio, the audio was done at the Austin, Texas studio, and many of the special effects were done by the Seattle, Washington studio.
The Stranglehold team is now helping the Newcastle studio working on the Wheelman title, something that is only possible because Midway's studios are using the same underlying technology and code base.
The primary advantage to shared technology is lower cost of development for the second batch of next-gen titles.
"But, more importantly," Zucker added, "our teams will be able to spend more time doing the things that matter to sales - which is improving the quality of the game, gameplay, level design - and less time on reinventing technology as we go forward."

EA may be making a big song and dance about the full albums it will be selling as downloads for Rock Band, but Activision's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is due out this month and already there are downloadable songs built around particular bands - with Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver packs going up today.
The former gives you access to "The Pretender", "All My Life" and "This Is A Call" for 500 Microsoft points (GBP 4.25 / EUR 5.82 approx), while the latter offered "She Builds Quick Machines", "Slither" and "Messages" for the same amount.
Guitar Hero III is already out in the States, hence the release, and will be with us here on 23rd November for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PS2. PC and DS versions are also planned, although we've heard suspiciously little about the latter. For more on the game's progress, check out our recent Guitar Hero III Xbox 360 first impressions, and watch out for a review in the near future.

Call of Duty 4 erupts onto PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 screens later this week, so we've been rolling around in the mud and grass getting beads on contacts and foxtrotting tangos so you can watch some videos!
First up on Eurogamer TV here in the UK is an exciting montage featuring an escape from a sinking ship, riding around on a helicopter and then crawling around on a farm realistically. Reminds us of the good old days up at Hereford swimming through caves watching out for the Grenade Danger Indicator.
Meanwhile, over on Eurogamer Germany there's all sorts of things happening in a smoky street assault, which even looks a bit like Killzone 2. Then things get brighter in the side alleys, before we sweep off to Eurogamer France to fire rocket launchers at tanks using satellites, before pressing up on the d-pad just like our grandparents did to use night vision goggles.
For more on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, check out our Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Not Modern Combat Get It Right review, in which Kristan describes the game as "consistently spectacular", "something that keeps you engaged right to the very end" and "fruit".

New from Play Asia
Shin Sangoku Musou 5 (aka. Dynasty Warriors 6) is Koei's latest installment in their popular hack and slash series. Shin Sangoku Musou 5 is said to greatly vary from past games in the series as players are now able to make their character swim, climb, control rowboats, destroy walls, and be able to pull off "unlimited combos" with the use of the new "renbu" system.
Dueling from Shin Sangoku Musou 3 is set to return, but this go-around is quite different from the earlier installment. Duels take place on the battlefield and the nearby soldiers will circle around the two fighters, instead of the duel being on a random plain that was not there seconds before. The A.I. has also be enhanced: enemies are now able to adapt to the players actions, i.e. if the player continually attacks enemies from behind, they will adapt to this and attempt to avoid the player's attacks.
Wild animals such as wolves and tigers are also in the game, and can attack the character or on some occasions, become allies. Sneak attacks and ambushes have been implemented, as well as the increased importance of strongholds.

Speaking at a BMO Capital Markets conference on interactive entertainment, a Microsoft executive has pointed to the PlayStation 2 as highlighting the benefits of stretching the Xbox 360's lifespan beyond the "typical" (depending on who you ask) five years. "Look at the PS2; they've gone long-time and seem to have pretty good legs on what they are doing," said yes that's her real name Mindy Mount. "If we were able to do that, as CFO I think that's great, because every year you draw it out you increase profitability." While the chief financial officer for Microsoft's entertainment division may see dollar signs in a longer lifespan, obnoxious and overly literal bloggers see the telltale red lights that signal many an individual system's inability to make it past five months, let alone five years.

What can his choice of gaming system tell you about him? We convened a panel of experts to give you the scoop:
* Carl Arinoldo, Long Island, NY-based psychologist
* Ed Magnin, chairman, Game & Simulation Programming, DeVry University's Dallas Metro campus
* Shane Satterfield, editor-in-chief, Santa Monica-based GameTrailers.com, an online gaming site
Q. And what does the Xbox divulge about its owner?
* Arinoldo: There is a wide variety of games available through the Xbox 360... so one may be better able to find games in common with a significant other who may not be an avid gamer. Preferring the Xbox 360 may say that the owner is willing to play cooperatively.
* Magnin: Xbox 360 says he's probably into serious gaming. Take a look at his game stats. Ask him to show you how many hours he spent playing his favorite games. Many guys log 100 to 200 hours on their favorite games.
* Satterfield: These guys tend to like extremely violent, visceral games, as well as the social aspect of connecting with friends online. They may be living out an active and social life through games, because they are a bit on the shy side. Xbox 360 fans tend to make good money and like to spend it. These guys are passionate about gaming and that transfers into the bedroom as well.

The head of the Microsoft Xbox operation in Australia, David Mclean, who is becoming famous for what he doesn't say rather than what he does, is set to hear from yet another very "angry" Xbox 360 customer who is so angry with Mclean and his operation that he has packed up his second broken Xbox and shipped it directly to him with a letter that says: "Microsoft sucks you can keep your busted Xbox". He also said that he will never deal with Microsoft again.
Marcel Ollmann of New Zealand claims in a letter to Mclean that he is now on his second Xbox 360 and like a lot of other Xbox 360 users who have had problems with Microsoft over their gaming consoles, it is not the failure of the Xbox that galls him but the "shocking" service that Ollmann received when he attempted to get his first Xbox 360 fixed.
"Rather than following New Zealand law and providing replacements at a point of sale I was forced to call the Xbox support and get a resolution through a toll-free helpdesk. After jumping through various hoops over the phone with representatives that struggled with basic English I boxed my Xbox360 and at my expense sent it to Microsoft. From this point on, my xbox360 was never seen again. The helpdesk had no record of my console being received or processed for repair. I wasted countless hours trying to get a resolution from Microsoft. The calls to the Microsoft helpdesk were so frustrating that I never wanted to deal with them again".

via Computer and Video Games
New maps for Halo 3's already legendary multiplayer mode are well underway being its typical talkative type, Bungie has come out to tease us with details.
Jodrell Bank, Purple Reign and Vandelay are the three maps discussed, which we guess will make up the first map pack hopefully released via XBL before long.
Talking first about Jodrell Bank, Bungie says: "It's a Team Slayer main course and player counts would fit swimmingly into both Social Slayer and Team Slayer hoppers and I think it might even be possible to shoehorn a few more players into the mix without overcrowding things."
Purple Reign sounds pretty cool, too. "The earliest iteration of the map actually had a completely different overall shape. If I sketched the cross section of the map's floor onto a napkin it would've looked like a small hill, but when you played it, it wasn't readily apparent," says Bungie.
"In the last month, the concavity was changed so that if you were staring the same napkin with the new version of it it'd look more like a gently sloping bowl. The difference in the way the map played then versus now is pretty remarkable. Subtle changes to the floor's geometry resulted in wider lines of sight for players staring down one half of the map and an intricate and strategic mix of floor/column/ramp gameplay on the other side and all of the sneaky jumps those mechanics entail." Sweet.
And fans of H3's Forge mode will be into Vandelay. "Vandelay is structurally the simplest map we've ever made, yet the tools that we're providing with the help of the Forge give the map tons of potential. That potential could be used for devising clever contraptions, unique playspaces and when paired with Player Traits could become a test bed for new ideas from both Bungie and the playerbase."
It goes on to explain: "Up until now, Forge has been primarily thought of as an object editor. It's been a great tool for devising tweaks and changes to maps, the net result ranging from "Oh, you put more BRs on Snowbound," to "Wow, you made a Jail that you rescue players from."
Speaking of making jails, a player-created playtype which imitates the Jailbreak mode in Quake 1 has been spotted by a keen Bungie. Inventive players have used Forge to move crates to trap players in a simulated jail in the Pit level. "The teleporter sender nodes were placed up in the nooks and when players died all spawn points took them to what we'd start to call "The Jail," explains Bungie.
Bungie revealed that it will be working on tweaks for the clever playtype with the possibility of slapping it on the Bungie's Favourites menu within Halo 3.
"Map forgers and game variant makers we are watching, playing and enjoying what you're doing and it's entirely possible that you'll get a message from us once we've tested a gametype with some feedback and a few notes and maybe a date as to when it will be showing up on Favorites," says Bungie.
