With 2007 almost to a close, its getting pretty obvious that our previously announced next project 'EX' will not be being released during its previous 'Holiday 2007' slot. This is mainly due to myself (Blackbolt) not having as much free time as I've previously had. Also, the team is pretty much just myself now. Jezz_X continues to maintain the current skins on the SVN, but there is no active development happening amongst the team as everyone is off doing their own projects.
The XBMC skin EX is still being worked on by myself and I very much plan to release it as soon as its ready for public consumption. Progress has been slow, but hopefully with the start of 2008 it will pick up. The design plan for the entire skin is almost locked down and all that will remain is the task of making everything work together and polishing it all up. The main focus of the skin is still to be used as a media center and its very much a HD centric user interface, built for Widescreen 720p.
Although I don't have any beta versions available for people to download, I am willing to show off the homescreen as of this weekend. The previous 3 icon layout was proving to feel too 'zoomed' in and so I recently bumped it up to 5 icons and thus it has a much better feeling while moving around. If you click the preview image below you can get a full 720p resolution image of the home screen.
I will be bringing you more updates as and when development picks up for this skin as I'm just as eager as everyone else who's waiting to get it finished. I wish everyone a happy holiday and I hope to bring you more good news in the new year.

Will Warner Bros. go Blu-ray exclusive at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show? Their have been numerous... and unfounded... rumors that they will, despite Warner Bros.' recent public statements to the contrary.
Enthusiasts and bloggers have pointed to the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and Warner Bros. listed as attending the HD DVD Promotional Group's Press Conference (all two hours of it) on Sunday, January 6th, as proof that Warner Bros. will continue publishing on HD DVD.

A multiplayer demo of Kaos Studios' FPS Frontlines: Fuel of War will be arriving on Xbox Live Marketplace soon, the developer has told CVG.
The multiplayer tryout follows the single-player demo which arrived on Marketplace last week and don't forget if you'd like a bash at the PC version, we're currently giving away free beta downloads and keys for you to sample.
As it turns out, Kaos has been listening to fan feedback on the demo and has modified the final game thus (it tells us):
"We at Kaos Studios are very interested in your feedback on our recently released single-player demo on the Xbox 360. The community is very important to us and we make an effort to pay attention to what you have to say so we can make this the best game possible.
Advertisement:
Controls - We're taking the feedback on the control issues seriously and have already begun making changes. Specifically, the C4 drone controls have been improved and we've looked at the "dead zone" in the sensitivity. You should see a big improvement in the controls when we release the multiplayer demo.
Graphics - We've been optimizing the graphics and there is a dramatic increase in the framerate. The quality of the graphics also have been brought up to par with other large-scale shooters.
Popping - The popping has been reduced but there may still be some in the final game given the size of the levels (3 sq miles) and sandbox environment.
Glitches - The minor clipping issues in the demo have been resolved.
AI - There were some bugs with the AI in the demo, which have been resolved.
Pace of the game - The bigger world will make it feel like the pace of the game is slower but this is also probably related to the control and character speed issues that we are working on.
Frontlines is in the shops in February. Read our hands-on impressions right here.

Two new 'character' trailers from Bizarre Creations' action game The Club can be viewed right here in our video player.
The Club is nothing like your ordinary shooter. At all. Coming from the developer responsible for Project Gotham Racing fame, The Club's hybrid mish-mash of different genres aims to bring "the diversity of a fighting game and the intensity of a shooter" says the studio.
Back in September Sega announced a slip for The Club to early 2008, following this up with a confirmed release date of February 8 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Del-Rey Books and author Drew Karpyshyn have announced the second volume in the Mass Effect series of novels, which will bridge the gap between the first game and its eventual sequel.
Mass Effect: Ascension is the name of the second read, but we wouldn't like to speculate what it might be about because we're yet to finish the massive game. No spoilers!
The first book though, Mass Effect: Revelation (a prequel to the 360 RPG) was a great read (even if it wasn't the best written book) so we're definitely going to skim through Ascension when it comes out next Summer.
Meanwhile, there's speculation that the currently 360 exclusive RPG is coming to PS3. Superstar analyst Michael Patcher said in an interview that he reckons BioWare will definitely bring it to Sony's console. Stranger things have happened (especially this year)...
Now, all we've got to do is finishing the game before January...

Still sitting on the Xbox fence? Awesome internet deals mean you can get your hands on an Xbox 360 Arcade system this week for £149.99 - that's less than a Wii (if you can find one).
The deal's currently being offered by the GameStation website and it's considering the inevitable demand it's probably not going to be there for long.
RRP for the Xbox 360 Arcade bundles is £199.99.
The Arcade comes with a chrome-less Core console (if that's what you call it these days), a memory unit, wireless controller and five Xbox Live Arcade games including Pac-Man and Boom Boom Rocket.
It's a good deal, but we're off before we sound too much like a GameStation advert (and to sell all the cheap Arcades on eBay).

Namco Bandai has released six downloadable aeroplanes for downloading on Xbox Live Marketplace download place. Each of them costs 200 Microsoft Points, except the one that costs 400 Microsoft Points, and the other one which is free. So, several of them cost 200 Microsoft Points. Get off my back.
What are the planes then? They are the Mirage2000-5 Scarface Emblem (free), the F-22A Raptor Mobius (200), the F-15E Strike Eagle Cipher (200), I have never been so bored in my entire life, the F-15E Strike Eagle Pixy (200), the A-10A ThunderBoltII Xmas (200) and the F-117A Night Hawk - The Idolmaster Yuhiko (400). Interestingly, the Mobius one is in the press release but not on Major Nelson's DLC update. Actually, that's not interesting.
So, download them, if you want. The game's jolly good, apparently. "Ace Combat 6 can be our wingman any time," said Rob Fahey, evidently having an off day. Is it "the eternal struggle", too, Rob? Perhaps it's a mixed bag? Doesn't know how to use semi-colons either, by the look of it. It's okay - he doesn't know where I live.

One minute we know very little about Ubisoft's 360 version of first-person slasher Dark Messiah, the next we can actually play the thing on Xbox Live.
Yep, the single and multiplayer demo of Dark Messiah: Elements, which we're really hoping has been given a decent transfer to console, is now up for sampling on Xbox Live Marketplace.
The 360 version has a new lock-on feature and tweaked level design and game statistics. There's also three previously unreleased levels with new objectives, gameplay, and rewards.
We've not idea how big it is (because we're too busy messing around with toy helicopters to download it) but let us know if its any good in the comments below, would you please?

nes6502 has released a modified version of NeoGenesis a Sega Genesis, Sega CD and Sega 32X emulator for the original Microsoft XBOX video game console. Using this emulator you can enjoy your classic game collection on your last generation console.
What's New?
This version of NeoGenesis supports ROMs over 6MB. This supports Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy. I tested it with the default skin at 1080i with filters. It ran great with no crashes. I don't know if this breaks anything else, so I would use this as a standalone version. Source changes are included.

As part of its "10 Days, 10 Deals" sale, the web giant is giving away all three Bourne flicks on HD DVD with purchase of the Xbox 360 HD DVD player.
Combined with the 'King Kong' HD DVD that comes in the box and five additional free HD DVD discs by mail, that's a total of nine free discs included with purchase of the Xbox add-on, a value that roughly matches the $179 pricetag of the player itself.

The other day I reported that I was getting emails in from disgruntled Xbox Live users who had been banned by Microsoft for allegedly connecting to the online service using modded consoles even though the consoles were totally unmodified. Today I'm hearing that some of those affected are finally getting somewhere with tech support.
Initially, Microsoft's response had been that the process used to identify modded consoles (a process that would allow the console to play backed up game) was 100% accurate and that there was nothing that Microsoft or users could do other than buy a new console. At the time Microsoft wouldn't even take the consoles in to be checked or repair. Now is seems that things have changed. I'm still waiting for official word from Microsoft but according to several affected gamers that I have spoken to, Microsoft is now backing down from the initial stance and some consoles are being unbanned and others taken in for repair.
*update*
Looks like microsoft can officially *unban* a console!
forums.somethingawful.com
The thread above is about a upset consumer who claims he had a unmodified system and got a ban. After some upsetting calls to MS, and several supervisors, he got his case escalated. Apparently after a few days, he was able to sign on live again! Strike one for MS, looks like their super robot 100% fullproof ban hammer is a flimsy inaccurate banana.
I urge all users whom were banned to call and throw a fit, get your case escalated and see what they will do! The proof is in the pudding, and you can eat it too!

December 20th, 2007, 22:45 Posted By: wraggster
Viacom Inc. and Microsoft Corporation today announced a broad-based, strategic alliance under which major divisions of both companies will collaborate on advertising, content distribution, event promotions and games over the next several years.
The comprehensive agreement spans across the two companies and includes a number of significant components. Among them:
-- Microsoft will license, on a non-exclusive basis, long and short-form television and theatrical content from across Viacom's cable network and motion picture businesses, including MTV, Comedy Central, BET and Paramount Pictures for use on Microsoft properties such as MSN and Xbox 360.
-- Microsoft's Atlas division will become the ad server for Viacom's U.S. websites and Microsoft will have the exclusive right to sell remnant display advertising inventory on Viacom's U.S. websites.
-- Microsoft will buy advertising on Viacom broadcast and online networks over a five-year period and the companies will work together on promotions and sponsorships for MTV Networks and BET Networks award shows;
-- Viacom will work with Microsoft on opportunities to become a preferred publishing partner across Microsoft's casual gaming platforms.
Content Distribution
Viacom will provide Microsoft with a broad selection of short-form and long-form audio-visual content from MTV Networks, Paramount and BET Networks for distribution by Microsoft on properties such as MSN.com and Xbox 360. A wide range of content from Viacom properties is already distributed to Xbox 360 users through Xbox LIVE Marketplace and this deal adds popular content from BET Networks. In addition, Viacom will work with Microsoft's casual gaming platforms (MSN and Windows) to provide downloadable casual games to the substantial base of consumers playing quick-to-develop, easy-to-learn games on these platforms.
