This week the Xbox Live Arcade is getting another injection of classic arcade action. Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe will be available as a single download this Wednesday.
One of the original fixed-screen shooters, Asteroids arrived in arcades back in 1979 sporting vector graphics and five buttons for controlling your spacecraft. The sequel, Asteroids Deluxe, was released the following year and added shields and new enemies.
Like most arcade games on XBLA, Asteroids' graphics have been "remastered" for the HD era. A new Throttle Monkey mode has been added to both games that cranks up the speed for an enhanced challenge.

Speculation grew this weekend that PC shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is coming to Xbox 360, after its Ukrainian developer GSC Game World revealed it's become a certified Xbox developer.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. PC publisher THQ gave us a swift "no comment" when we picked up the phone, though we saw that coming a mile off.
The official announcement can be found over on GSC's website, but one sentence from the Russian press release was left out of the English announcement, as spotted by eagle-eyed NeoGAF forum users.
"Our second aim is to increase X360 install base and legal software sales in ex-USSR region. Creation of high quality, interesting, comprehensible for our players titles and acceptable cost of games is the key to this task," says the Russian release, via our mate Google translate.
We can only support the cause of introducing more Russians to Xbox Live, if only to make online games of Call of Duty even more authentic.
As for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 360, apparently GSC is already working on a handful of unannounced console titles, so it'd be a pretty safe assumption that at least one of them will take place near Chernobyl.
We'll let you know when GSC's inevitable Russian press release answering all arrives.

Those looking forward to a Christmas of co-op fake guitar action will be disappointed to hear that standalone Guitar Hero 3 wireless guitars will not be in the shops until early next year.
That leaves rocking PS3, Wii and every-other-platform gamers with the choice of buying another copy of the game to get their two-player action on, or buggering it off altogether until after the mince pies have gone away.
Activision US broke the news to our mate Kotaku, but its UK outfit is being shy as to whether Europe is in the same situation. We're guessing we're not going to find standalone guitars until next year either.
Xbox 360 and PS2 owners can take refuge in the fact that old GHII controllers will work just fine with the latest instalment, of which you can read the review right here. It's still really quite good.

We all know stealing is not only easy and fun, but it's also very cool. But did you know that sometimes, stealing can go too far? Take, for instance, this tale of an unassuming store clerk who opened up a returned 360 to find that the console had been gutted, the controllers were missing, and the HDMI cables had been replaced with printer cords.
Sure, we know what you're thinking, because we're thinking it too: That's very funny and not at all immoral. But where we have to draw the line is what was stuffed into the 360 to make it seem weighty enough: An old medical textbook. Gosh, otherwise-pretty-successful thief, don't you have any consideration? Stealing is fine, but shoving a giant hunk of flammable material into a console known for capturing the sun's heat and using it to play DVDs and eventually, inevitably die? That's just dangerous.

Expand Your Xbox LIVE Network of Pals by browsing the Friends lists of other Xbox LIVE members
New Experience to be made available on December 4th with the Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update
Microsoft is making it even easier to expand your Friends network on Xbox LIVE, starting with the Fall Dashboard Update on December 4th. Members will now be able to check out the friends lists of fellow Xbox LIVE members right from the Dashboard. With this new feature, members can find old friends or connect with new ones within the community of more than 8 million people on Xbox LIVE around the globe and send messages and game invites, as well as compare games and Achievements.
With the prevalence of social media websites such as MySpace and FaceBook, this type of capability has largely come to be expected from consumers as a means to relate in an online community. Xbox LIVE continually seeks new ways to better serve the expectations of its members, which often result in enhancements made available for free through the bi-annual Dashboard updates.
When the Fall Dashboard update is distributed on December 4th, the new default setting on Xbox LIVE will be active enabling members to see the Friends lists of other Xbox LIVE members. Members who would like to keep their friends list private can take the following steps to change their settings beginning today:
Log in to www.xbox.com/fof and select one of the three options available for your Gamertag:
* Everyone (only available to members 18 and older)
* Friends only (available to members 13 and older)
* Blocked (available to all members, and automatic for anyone under the age of 13)
Stay tuned for more information about the Xbox 360 Dashboard Update later this month.

Word handed done from a few iPod owners is that Apple's latest firmware update has rendered iPod playback on the 360 iffy. Tony sent us a tip stating that his 5G iPod is no longer recognized by his 360 after updating the firmware on his iPod. We've also heard from various iPod / 360 owners that, for some reason or another, their iPods either never worked (in the case of the the iPod Touch) or just quit working (2GB iPod Nano).

Legueux of gx-mod.com informed us that Zouzzz managed to unban his Xbox 360 console from LIVE on their forums by swapping the keyvault of his banned Xbox360 with the keyvault of another (not banned) Xbox 360.
However it's not something that everyone out there can do (yet) as you'll need your CPU key (via Hypervisor Exploit and if you got banned it means you're on the latest kernel so you'll need to perform the 'Timing Attack' to downgrade first). You'll also need all the tools to read/flash your Xbox 360 NAND (with the Infectus chip for example).
Here are the things he tried:
* downgrade banned 5787 PAL to 4532 NTSC U, updated again to 5787 via HD. Still banned.
* downgrade banned 5787 PAL to 1888 PAL, updated again to 5787 via HD. Still banned.
* Patched his original 1888 PAL dump with the last number of the Xbox 360 serial in the keyvault (location A0 to AB) changed. Still banned.
* Patched his original 1888 PAL dump with the all the numbers of the Xbox 360 serial in the keyvault changed. Still banned.
* Replaced the full keyvault in his original 1888 PAL dump of the banned console with a keyvault of an unbanned console. Connected to LIVE OK, updated to latest kernel online OK, still connects fine to LIVE.

Ubisoft has whipped the wrappers off the three factions in real-time strategy console game Tom Clancy's EndWar.
Chief among them has to be the European Federation, formed in 2016 after Saudi Arabia and Iran had a nuclear argument. The resulting energy crisis meant the continent had to band together - all except the UK and Ireland. We were too busy drinking fish and chips and eating tea, love.
Europe has the Enforcers Corps to do its bidding; made up of counter-terrorist agents like Jack Bauer and peacekeeping forces like Greenpeace. They love a bit of urban warfare with rapping and stuff, and although they are less armoured than their counterparts, their electronic warfare, enery weapons and fast vehicles more than make up for it.
Following them are the Americans, who split from Europe after a controversial space race, eventually upsetting everyone when they launched their Star Wars-like Freedom Star space station.
Their Joint Strike Force is small, light and fast - much like the Advanced Warfighter squadrons. They specialise in stealth technology and battleground robotics like those little aerial drone things, and can call in coordinated ground and air strikes.
Last but not least are the Russians, now the largest supplier of oil in the world, resulting in a reclaimed title of superpower that was last flexed during the Cold War.
Their hardened and veteran Spetznat Guard Brigade have the heaviest arsenal around. So much war has passed their eyes that their regard for human life is minimal, they probably smoke, and they can modify their vehicles beyond their original capabilities.
EndWar is a real-time strategy game built on the familiar work of author Tom Clancy. It's console exclusive and so promises intuitive controls, including voice commands that apparently work really quite well indeed.
Pop over to our early EndWar preview to see what it is all about, or head over to our gallery to see some renders of what the different factions will look like.

Space Giraffe developer Jeff Minter has said he's going to stop writing about game development on his blog after taking a bit of a shoeing for a late-night post earlier in the week where he complained bitterly that the Xbox Live Arcade version of Frogger was outselling his latest game "by more than ten to one".
"Not seeing a lot of reason to continue even trying to make games, at this point, when a remake of Frogger, one of the worst games in the history of old arcade games, can outsell Space Giraffe that we put so much love and effort into, by more than ten to one, in one week," Minter had written. "OK, we get the message. All you want on that channel is remakes of old, shite arcade games and crap you vaguely remember playing on your Amiga. ... We'll shut up trying to do anything new then."
Two days later, Minter, clearly upset by the reaction, wrote:
"I'm not going to be writing about game development here any more after this. Yes, I had a bit of a rant the other night because frankly yes, it is a bit disappointing to see a repackaged MAME rom doing much better than original content, but hey, that's how it goes. People are more inclined to buy stuff they remember rather than stuff that's new.
"We're invested in XBLA now, and we need to re-use the [Space Giraffe] framework for a couple of reasonably quick games - I think that's the way to make it work out for us, we just need more games in the pipeline. I'm already halfway through the next one and I just want to get my head down and get on with it."
Seems like a shame to us. We always enjoyed hearing what he was up to. He adds: "from now on this will just be about sheep and plushies and other such non-work-related stuff". Hopefully in time he'll change his mind.
For more on Space Giraffe, check out its gamepage, where you'll find it divided opinion, but ultimately won quite a few of us and you over.

After a long and gruelling wait for Sensible World of Soccer to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade, the title was tipped off earlier this month as being set for release in late November. With only one week left in the month then, where is the footy classic?
The obvious assumption would be that Codemasters' classic will be landing on the 360 game service next Wednesday, and our suspicions have been fuelled further by confirmation of a XBLA event next week flagging up SWoS.
Could Sensi be on for a November 28 release then? We expect news either way in the next few days.

One of the first titles to make the move from boxed-retail to digital-download, Eidos’ Tomb Raider: Anniversary, has today arrived on Xbox Live.
Those who already own Tomb Raider: Legend are able to download the two different packs that comprise the game – each at a cost of 1200 Microsoft points (a little over £10 each). 20GB hard drive owners note, though, that the entire game will occupy around 3GB on your machine.
Aside from Microsoft’s Xbox Arcade Collection, the only other titles to appear both at retail and on Microsoft’s network are Bethesda’s various Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion expansions.
In addition, the publisher also confirmed that the Wii version of Tomb Raider: Anniversary will be released in Europe on December 7th.

Today's contribution comes from Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business, Jeff Bell. Bell more or less made his debut at this year's E3 by getting whooped in Madden by Reggie Bush. With Peter Moore moving over to Electronic Arts, expect to see more from Bell on Microsoft's side.
* GI: You're talking about the variety of choices that people have. I was at a retail store over the weekend, and I literally saw a mom standing in front of the Xbox 360 kiosk, and there were four different SKUs. You had the Elite, the Pro, the Halo edition and then the Arcade. She sat and stared for about a minute, then she picked up the phone and asked, "Which one are we supposed to get him for Christmas?" Do you think having four different SKUs is a little confusing for the consumer?
* Bell: Well, the good news is she bought one. You know, there is a potential that four is more confusing than one. I have a lot of respect for the consumer. I look at, for instance, being at Best Buy last evening myself, doing some holiday shopping, I think I saw 47 different cellular phones on display. I look over at the appliance section, and I think there must be two dozen different refrigerators that people can look at. I have a lot of respect for the intelligence of the savvy consumer. For us, we really have three. The special-edition Halo 3 system is for the fanboys, and there are a few left--although there aren't that many left after the launch. So I think we'll get back to three there. We change the exterior packaging as well to make it a little simpler for people to see what the contents are, using graphics and major messaging. So that's a good problem to have. I think the three price points, the content that's held within, should allow people to find the system that's right for them. I think the one common denominator with all of those is again the competitive advantage we hold with Xbox Live. It is a free service. People can plug in and make available all of the features of Marketplace, whether it is the Arcade games that are very affordable. We continue to get closer to over 100 games for this holiday that people can download and play for 500 Microsoft Points, which is 6 or 7 dollars, which makes it much more affordable for families. Or on the Marketplace, to be able to preview the demos and the trailers of games that have come out. So we're feeling like in any of those three choices, people are going to be able to find the thing that's right for them that gets them the most joy and happiness as a family.
* GI: You said that you've had a 90 percent customer-satisfaction rating. What about the mass amount of people who are experiencing the "red ring of death"? People who I talk to that are buying 360s almost expect it. How are you actually fixing this problem, and are you seeing the rate of hardware returns going down at all?
* Bell: Well, there are a couple of things. First off, the 90 percent has not taken one change during the entire summer period, when we came out with what was a historic--and we obviously feel very badly about those that had problems, but we feel very proud of our stance behind our product and brand. We set aside the funds necessary to pay for the shipping and repair of any console that experiences that particular signal for failure. We found that both the retail-sales people as well as our consumers find it to be obviously very unpleasant, but they also give a lot of credence to how firm we put our support behind our business and they respect that. We've also decrease, on a market basis, the amount of time between sending a box off and then getting it back repaired. We've seen a market decrease in any repeat repairs, and overall, the new boxes that we're shipping, we've put fixes in place that give us confidence that this is going to be something that hopefully will become a distant memory in our history as opposed to something that we will see going forward.
