The Xbox 360 has become the unlikely system of choice for 2D shooting fans this generation. Joining Taito's Castle Shikigami 3, the latest issue of Famitsu reveals that Success is bringing Raiden Fighters Aces to the platform.
Raiden Fighters Aces is a compilation of arcade shooters from the Raiden Fighters series. Included, you'll find Raiden Fighters (1996), Raiden Fighters 2 (1997) and Raiden Fighters Jet (1998), all playable in their original vertical dimensions.
On top of the full recreations of the classic titles, Success is including a few Xbox 360 original features. The game will include online support, with online rankings and the ability to upload and download replay data. To make sure you have the best strategies for making good replays, Success is also throwing in a DVD strategy guide with high score play for all three titles from Japan's top players.
And, of course, a new mode of play that all purists require. The game will let you turn your TV on its side to play full screen while maintaining the arcade version's proportions.
Raiden Fighters Aces will hit Japan in 2008. There's no word yet on an international release.

There's been mixed opinion surrounding Mass Effect's Ghost Recon-meets-Gears of War combat gameplay, and while we think it's actually quite good we've mashed together a video montage so you can make up your own mind.
The final game is in shops tomorrow (finally), whereupon you'll be able to lock yourself behind the curtains and have the most unsociable sci-fi weekend since Stu Bishop discovered Battlestar Galactica all those years ago.
For the verdict you'll want to click here, and don't forget to check out the rest of our videos before running to the shops.

Tempest 2000 creator Jeff Minter has gone a bit mental on his blog, after the disappointing sales of Space Giraffe on Xbox Live Arcade.
The psychedelic shooter was released on the service in August, and apparently, much to Mr. Minter's frustration, it's even being outsold by Frogger.
"Not seeing a lot of reason to continue even trying to make games, at this point, when a remake of Frogger, one of the worst games in the history of old arcade games, can outsell Space Giraffe that we put so much love and effort into, by more than ten to one, in one week," writes Minter on his blog.
To be fair though, in Frogger you can work out what's going on fairly quickly and you can't win by taping the 'A' and analogue stick into the down position.
"OK, we get the message. All you want on that channel is remakes of old, shite arcade games and crap you vaguely remember playing on your Amiga. We'll shut up trying to do anything new then. Sorry for even trying", Minter added.
No one can argue that Space Giraffe is creative, sure, but when you go out to deliberately shape an off-the-wall underground shooter and then moan when the mainstream don't pick it up, you're not going to get much sympathy.

Guitar Hero III owners will find a nice treat on Xbox Live this morning - the Halo theme tune is now available for download. And it's free!
Titled 'Halo Theme Mjolnir Mix' the free download lets you play the new version of the theme, put together by Martin O'Donnell, Michael Salvatori, and Steve Vai.
And while you're there, you might want to splash some MS points on the recently-released track packs, including Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver tunes.

Valve has said a demo for The Orange Box should be making its way to Xbox Live today.
This first sampler will let you get a feel for Half-Life 2: Episode 2, and presumably be followed in coming weeks by tasters for Portal and possibly Team Fortress 2. Very good.
Earlier this week EA told us the PS3 version would be out next month on 14th December, quashing rumours that it would not make it in time for Christmas oh no what will I get in my stocking etc.
Those of you with a 360 and PC can already buy it, however, and we thoroughly recommend you do so. It has five games inside it, for starters, and none have scored lower than 9/10 on Eurogamer.
Head over to The Orange Box review to see what we made of it all.

California resident Randy Nunez didn't have a pleasant experience after purchasing Halo 3. In fact, he thought that the game wasn't just unstable on the Xbox 360—he thought it was sue-worthy. So he filed a class action lawsuit against Bungie and Microsoft requesting (unspecified?) damages. His argument is simple:
Halo 3 does not functino with the Xbox 360, and to the contrary, attempted use of Halo 3 consistently causes the Xbox 360 to "crash," "freeze" or "lock up" while the game is being played.
And while we are far from law experts, it seems like a tough argument to prove, especially given the fact that while there are many documented cases of the Xbox 360 failing (permanently), we haven't heard much of anything approaching a specific correlation between Xbox 360 (temporary) failure and Halo 3.

It looks like Microsoft has started a new wave of Xbox Live bannings against naughty console modders, according to a report.
The banning campaign is aimed squarely at dirty pirates who have modified their DVD firmware or DVD+/-R DL discs - specifically those using Toshiba-Samsung and Hitachi-LG drives.
According to our own clued-up Del Boy, these modified drives allow Xbox 360 owners to play copied games, which obviously isn't very good news for the platform holder.
As always Microsoft bans console serial numbers from its online service, but Xbox Live accounts are free to go about their non-naughty business on another consoles. It's only 300 quid down the toilet for them then. Oh well...

There's a new demo of Blacksite on Xbox Live Marketplace ahead of the Xbox 360 and PC versions' end-of-November launches.
The new demo weighs in at 988MB and sees you battling aliens in small-town America. We would give you more details, but we forgot to bring our Xbox 360 to the office this morning. It's heavy, all right.
This isn't the first demo, of course, with Live users already able to download a small taster that sees players blasting their way through alien scum in a petrol station before admiring a fancy old beast ripping its way through some buildings.
The full game's due out on 30th November for 360 and PC, with a PS3 version to follow, and you can read more about it in our first impressions and interview with Midway's Harvey Smith.

Sega's expansion to online lizard-basher Phantasy Star Universe, Ambition of the Illuminus is now available for purchase and download on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Sega says the PS2 and PC versions of the expansion will be released on January 11, 2008.
The 1600 Microsoft Point download (about 14 quid) adds both single-player and online content to the much-underrated action-RPG, including new missions and levels including the Granigs Mines and the Ruins of Old Rozenom City, which sounds quite moody.
It's a 1.92GB download, but at least you don't have to go to the shops. You can read our original write-up on Illuminus right here.

If you go down to the Xbox Live today, you'll be sure to find a demo for MX vs ATV Untamed.
It should take a few minutes to cop hold of at 911MB, and it will give you a taste of what to expect from the first next-generation outing in the racing series.
Untamed has a new Rhythm Racing physics engine, you see, which apparently makes all the difference when you are jumping on things like plant pots in a giant indoor arena - some sort of event called Endurocross.
THQ has also boasted about it looking a lot better because of the grunt of the new machines, although we're not as convinced after picking apart the screenshots.
MX vs ATV Untamed is due out on 360, PS3, Wii, DS and PSP on 7th March.

Ubisoft has revealed a sequel to last year's Rainbow Six outing in Sin City, Rainbow Six Vegas 2.
The sequel (yes, it's still set in Las Vegas) will be hitting PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in March 2008, with a new single-player campaign and "some surprises" left over for versus and co-op modes. Other than that, Ubisoft is reluctant to reveal any more about the sequel.
"Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas has been the effect of a bomb in the world of video gaming in 2006, by introducing in one fell swoop technological advance and innovation in terms gameplay," said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, in a French press release we translated on Google.
"We are confident that Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 will also pioneer in the field of highly competitive shooters and delight fans of the Rainbow Six brand."
The sequel will again be developed by Ubisoft Montreal. We're sure Clancy fans will be delighted, but we'll wait and see how much the second game has to offer before we get excited.

Microsoft has announced that Halo 3 will receive its first premium downloadable content on 11th December.
The "Heroic Map Pack" features three new maps and will cost 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.30) to begin with, before being made available for free in spring 2008 ahead of another map pack's release.
The three maps in this one are called Standoff, Rat's Nest and Foundry.
The first, Standoff, is described as a symmetrical valley map with bases at either end and a field of boulders in the middle, and is said to be ideal for medium sized objective and Slayer game-types.
Rat's Nest, meanwhile, promises "vast, labyrinthine passages" and an "indoor vehicular paradise" that claims to have been influenced by the Campaign mode, and works well for big team battles.
All three maps are compatible with Forge for editing, but the final map, Foundry, gets a special nod in this sense, with Microsoft identifying its industrial warehouse confines as ideal for tweaking, with every single object manoeuvrable, allowing you to place stairways, walls, bridges and tunnels as you adjust its layout to suit your multiplayer objectives.
Microsoft also says that this week's Xbox Live Arcade game will be Undertow, the much-trailed underwater shooter from Chair, which will cost 800 Microsoft Points when it releases at 9am GMT on Wednesday, 21st November.

Having gotten ourselves excited about Half-Life 2: Episode Two PC stats earlier, it'd be remiss of us not to remark on the stats fed to the world by Bungie on Friday about how people have been doing with Halo 3.
The headline statistic is that 43.28 percent of people whose Xbox 360s are connected to Xbox Live have finished the game on Normal difficulty, while 15.14 percent have conquered it on Legendary. A (surprisingly large, if you ask us) 2.07 percent of people have unlocked all 1000 points of the Gamerscore.
Bungie's regular weekly update also reveals that 8.68 percent of people have unlocked the Marathon Man Achievement, which involves locating and accessing all the Terminals in the Campaign mode. Those are people. That's the sun. It's going to be all right.
If you want to see how some of your fellow Eurogamers are doing, poke your nose around the Halo 3 gamepage's door and you can check out your own Friend leaderboard, among other things, and note that really quite a lot of you have all 49 Achievements unlocked.
Finally, Bungie's latest update also says to expect some sort of news today, 19th November, claiming that "folks are definitely going to want to check back in here at Bungie.net and keep faces pressed to their monitors like children breathing on school bus windows in November, because there will be news". So more on that later, presumably.

Microsoft has launched a promotion offering 10 free Xbox Live arcade titles to new and existing consumers.
New consumers who buy an Xbox 360 can join with an existing user to take advantage of a 'recommend a friend' promotion, with hit titles including Sonic the Hedgehog, Every Extended Extra Extreme, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting and Zuma Deluxe on offer.
"Going into this holiday period with one of the greatest line ups in video game history is certainly a compelling reason for a friend to jump into the world of Xbox 360," commented Stephen McGill, head of gaming and entertainment for Microsoft UK.
"However, this incredible offer also enforces the fact we've got an exceptional online service in Xbox Live, which truly does bring everyone together."
The promotion runs from October 1 until December 14.

The XNA team is pleased to announce the Beta release of XNA Game Studio 2.0! This Beta release is your chance to try out the new features available in XNA Game Studio 2.0, including support for Visual Studio 2005, multiplayer support over System Link and LIVE, and many more features and enhancements, many suggested by you, the community members.
If you're an existing XNA Game Studio Express user, you won't have to worry about uninstalling anything - XNA Game Studio 2.0 (Beta) lives comfortably side-by-side with XNA Game Studio Express. Just follow the link below to find out what's new in XNA Game Studio 2.0 and download the Beta, as well as updated sample content you can use with the Beta right away. There's even a multiplayer-enabled starter kit you can use to familiarize yourself with multiplayer programming in the XNA Framework.
XNA Game Studio 2.0 (Beta) supports multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows - LIVE. If you are planning on making multiplayer games on Windows that make use of any Games for Windows - LIVE features, you will need an Xbox LIVE Gamertag that has an active XNA Creators Club membership, and a special token.
To receive your token, send a message to xnacgp@microsoft.com with the subject "Beta Key Request". Note that you must send this message from the same e-mail address that is associated with an Xbox LIVE Gamertag that has an active XNA Creators Club membership. Last week, Shane Bettenhausen caused an internet uproar, an e-debacle if you will, when he hinted that an anticipated Microsoft first-party title would soon be canceled. The title turned out to be Marvel Universe Online, and while it hasn't been officially canceled, it sounds like production is at a standstill. The second, less sexy part of the rumor: A top Microsoft exec is on the way out.
Towards the end of the 1UP Yours podcast while the topic was being discussed, host Garnett Lee asked guest host N'Gai Croal, "Do you watch any Nickelodeon like Something Possible?". If you're not as adept with afternoon TV trivia as we are, allow us to drop some knowledge: He's talking about Kim Possible. And that points squarely at Microsoft Games Studios boss Shane Kim.
