We know what you're thinking, "Xbox version shutting down in Japan? Well, that dude's gotta be pissed." Yup, on January 31, 2008 Sega's risking a global backlash and terminating Xbox Live services for the onetime Dreamcast title in Japan.
The good news for the rest of the world's Phantasy Star Online community is that no similar announcements have been made outside of Japan. We don't know about you guys, but we don't want to be around once the legions of MMO-addicted GameCubers catch wind of a cancellation on that platform.

For all you Devil May Cry fanatics out there (wait -- are there Devil May Cry fanatics out there?) you're about to get a super-special, unicorn explosion from Microsoft. That's right, babies, it's the Devil May Cry special edition Xbox 360. Actually, it's more like a bundle of the boring, old, non-special (though HDMI equipped) Xbox 360, coupled with the brand-spaking-new Devil May Cry 4, where the Devil, crying, and the possibility of crying meet for a fourth -- but probably not final -- time. Right now it's looking like a Japanese-only deal, but you never know when something this gooey will drip over to these shores. Available January 31st for ¥37,800 (or about $330).

I have received a few questions as to why Xbox LIVE members under 18 cannot access game demos or trailers on Xbox LIVE. The answer lies with video game ratings organizations, like the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Game demos and trailers distributed over Xbox LIVE are considered advertising and in accordance with the ESRB's Principles and Guidelines for Responsible Advertising Practices Xbox LIVE members under 18 do not have access to demos or trailers for a title rated M (Mature) or RP (Rating Pending.) ESRB Guidelines are industry wide and are not unique to Xbox LIVE. In other words, these are the rules that all online console stores, like the Wii Shop Channel and the Playstation Store, need to adhere to in order to in be in line with the ESRB's Guidlines.

f what we're hearing out of Saratoga, California is true, Xbox 360 owners can expect to be playing motion sensing games, much like that of the Wii or PS3, by the end of next year. The details are still sketchy, but it appears a first-party add-on to existing controllers may be the delivery method of the technology.
It appears Microsoft has contracted the Saratoga, California firm, Gyration to handle the peripheral. If that name sounds familiar, it's for good reason. Gyration is the company responsible for the prototype designs of the Nintendo Wii-mote, which we all know has become a huge success.

Carcharius released a new port of ScummVM for Xbox1:
I've just released a beta of my port of ScummVM. This one is based off of the current ScummVM subversion tree (0.11.0svn).
This isn't an update of my previous port, it's a complete 'do over' (as an american might say). Some (xbox specific) things are in this version that weren't in my previous port and it's likely that some things from the previous version aren't in this one.
It is something that I've had in progress for a while now, other stuff kept getting in the way so I couldn't spend time on it. Because of that it's probably not as well tested as it could have been.
That's where you guys come in - please test the hell out of it during the next week or so and post any feedback so that I know what to look at.
Please remember that this is not an official port or part of the ScummVM project itself, so lease don't go bothering those guys with any issues. If you find anything wrong, please come and tell me about it here on xbox-scene.

PlayStation 3 isn't the only system getting some bundle love from Capcom. Microsoft Japan announced today the Xbox 360 Devil May Cry 4 Premium Pack, a hardware bundle that combines the 360 with the latest installment of Capcom's dramatic action hack-n-slasher.
The Japan-only bundle includes a Xbox 360 Standard Model, which is the Japanese version of America's Premium Pack, complete with a 20 gigabyte hard disk, wireless controller, media remote, HD AV cables and LAN cable. All hardware units in the bundle will have HDMI ports, so you'll get to experience the included retail copy of DMC4 in digital bliss.

We hear a lot of people are having problems with Xbox Live today (we're not, for the record), but if you're feeling a bit sheepish about giving the gift of a 360 + Live service to a loved one, just imagine how Microsoft must feel. The service -- which we'd like to remind everyone is paid, unlike the competition's -- has been up and down since Christmas weekend. And it's not some surprise that there would be an influx of users today, nor is it any mystery to Microsoft how many Live accounts and Xboxes were sold over the past couple of weeks -- which is precisely why this kind of thing is so annoying. Thankfully, it seems to be a bit less widespread than last weekend's outage. Feel free to shout it out in comments.

Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb, better known as Major Nelson, has revealed as part of a new post in his popular weblog that Microsoft is offering an Xbox 360 Points gifting system, currently U.S. only.
Now, when purchasing Microsoft Points online at the official website, users may also elect to gift points to other U.S. users, using the recipient's Windows Live ID (not their Gamertag).

The Scottish Government is trying a new approach to warning youngsters against the perils of drink driving: inserting adverts into Xbox 360 games.
£10,000 is being spent on the campaign to put adverts on in-game virtual billboards. The titles set to feature the ads include Need for Speed: Carbon, Need for Speed:ProStreet, Project Gotham Racing 4, NBA Live and Pro Evolution Soccer 2008.
Should this trial prove successful, the Scottish government tells us, the same approach could be used for other road safety messages.
Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson said, "With statistics showing that road deaths, particularly among young people, are continuing to rise, it is clear we must look at new ways of getting road safety messages across. This is exactly the kind of initiative we should be trying.

Merry Xmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year, if any)!
My plans changed today, so I had some free time to tend to some things in MC360 that I've wanted to do since the fall update to the real Xbox 360 dashboard. I've changed some icons around, fixed the size of the Gamertag font on the Gamercard and made a few small fixes. As always the SVN is the best place to get MC360 and stay up-to-date, but for those still not with the times, I've added a build of the new revision 1077 to the MC360 downloads section. Enjoy.

As you've all seen, Microsoft has started unbanning consoles. I've seen alot of people who were banned this past weekend, and are still banned, no matter how much yelling they do to poor customer reps. Others, who have modified firmwares ranging from 5.x to 1.4, and have never made a phone call have miraculously become unbanned!
As always with Microsoft, there is no rhyme or reason to their actions. A couple interesting things we have found...
You CAN have your console banned for having a 12v fan mod. A very trusted user of www.360patches.com got told directly from MS reps that his fan was modded on his 360 and that it violates the TOA. Any modification of hardware does indeed violate the TOA, so legally they reserve the right to ban users from live for that reason. Petty yes, but justified. A fan mod would be reasonably easy to detect, as voltage metering is something standard in all bios for the past 10 or so years.
In regards to 'bad game data' or kreon rips, SS, dmi and pfi, it appears that the reason MS might be unbanning xbox360's is because we've found evidence that strongly suggests ANY xbox360 can return bogus data. After some internal testing on a few older 360's, it seems that once a lens is near the end of its life, it can respond with all sorts of data, or lack thereof. A len's on the fritz was able to produce all sorts of odd angles that a new drive would not, aswell as tons of missing data throughout SS files (many chunks of data that read 00's instead).
So, it appears that MS is backtracking somewhat on the ban's, likely due to the reasons described above. Their infallible system has proven once again to not be perfect, and to attack innocent users. As always, we recommend that if you are a live user, to NOT modify your system, as you will eventually get banned.

Well, Redmond, it's been a funny year, hasn't it? Even if you ignore those Apple commercials, it's hard to ignore the fact that Vista was probably one of the main reasons people switched to the Mac OS, or to third-party Linux-based systems. We'll get to the big V--and that other mighty stain Windows Mobile--in a bit, but first you deserve much credit for some impressive feats in gaming, entertainment and home networking.
Xbox 360: A-
Microsoft, you have to be happy as hell that you pushed Xbox 360 out of the gate a year before the PS3 and the Wii. Console sales have been great, staying ahead of Sony and only recently challenged by Nintendo. This is fueled by two factors: a better selection of hot games like Halo 3 and BioShock and the only real implementation of live online gaming in the console world. The Xbox Live community has even allowed you to pilot programs for HD video downloading and all sorts of other media treats that make Sony (and Apple) nervous. Sadly for HD DVD buffs, compatibility with that format is not one of the selling points, or you would have included it in your recently revamped HDMI-equipped 1080p Xbox 360 Elite.
Performance aside, I would say that the only mark against you on this front is the hardware itself. I personally would like some kind of Xbox 360 Ultimate with integrated with HD DVD, but even if that doesn't happen, it's still pretty noisy, and the Red Rings of Death are getting to be more than just a clever punchline.

Microsoft's Andre Vrignaud (Ozymandias), managing the gaming platform strategy for Xbox and Windows, talks about the recent article suggesting Intel is working on CPUs for the (next-)next-gen consoles:
Unfortunately (for Intel), Motorola really swept the parts-provider role in this current generation... sounds like Intel doesn't intend to allow that to happen again.
Really can't say anything more since I know a bunch of folks who have left various companies to join Intel on their new effort. I will say that it's great to see a reinvigorated Intel getting back into the game!
