Bringing families and friends together is the marketing hook behind Microsoft's Xbox, as well as promotions from rival Nintendo for its Wii game system. The tech titans want to reach beyond teens and adult technophiles and ring up more business from casual gamers.
"We're growing our consumer base," says Jeff Bell, a Microsoft (MSFT) corporate vice president, about the company's new ad campaign and the Oct. 22 launch of the family-oriented Xbox 360 Arcade console. "We want to broaden our appeal."
Microsoft's new ad efforts, which include commercials that show a father and daughter playing with guitar-shaped controllers, position "Xbox as a connector that brings people together," Harris says.
Microsoft's maneuvers:
* A fresh ad campaign. TV and cinema ads show ordinary folks at spots such as a shopping mall parking lot. Their day-to-day activities are disrupted when a group of people crash the scene through unusual means such as hot-air balloons.
The outsiders set up a mock living room, complete with a couch, TV and an Xbox. Bystanders then crowd in to check out Xbox.
* Family-friendly video games. Rough-and-tumble Gears of War and Halo 3 are among the more well-known games that Microsoft publishes.
But the company is also promoting less-violent fare, such as Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action, which launches this week. The $59.99 game has a range of puzzles that use movie trivia.
* Less-expensive console. The $279.99 Xbox 360 Arcade comes with five free family-friendly games such as Uno and Pac-Man. Microsoft still offers the regular Xbox 360 for $349.99 and the Xbox 360 Elite -- targeted at hard-core gamers -- for $449.99.

BL with your cell phone?! You bet! If you are in an area where broadband is unavailable, and your only means of an internet connection is dial-up, then you have an alternative. Your cell phone. For XBL, and much more. Read on about how we had 10 XBOX 360's connected to XBOX Live via my cell phone.
Too stubborn to live with what many of my neighbors live with, have been living with for quite some time, and will probably continue to live with. My next option? Wireless. But where to start? There are not that many carriers, and the devices are somewhat cumbersome as far as what they'll accomplish. But, I knew that there were OTA transmissions on a cell phone network that reached speeds far in excess of 26k. It wasn't as good as Cable or DSL, but it was a start. My research led me to the Samsung i607 Blackjack on AT&Ts EDGE (and soon 3G, but we'll get into that later) network.

Best Buy's latest move may be one of the best yet for "devil customers."
It was reported yesterday on DailyTech that Wal-Mart would have the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player on sale for $98.97 Friday morning. Best Buy followed suit by offering the HD-A2 online and in-store for $99.99.
As one might imagine, Best Buy stores were quickly depleted of stock and BestBuy.com was hammered with excess orders. Although some orders were able to get through, an overwhelming majority of customers who purchased HD-A2s from BestBuy.com received backorder notices.
Given that the HD-A2 is now discontinued, one would have expected that Best Buy would just cancel all of the orders and be done with it -- but you would be wrong. Best Buy instead is replacing all backordered HD-A2 players with the new third-generation HD-A3 which retails for $299.99.

Rumor: Fall Update adds new family timer - Planned for December?
>> From xbox360fanboy.com:
[QUOTE]
According to a post made by JasonX1 over on the Xbox.com forums, he spotted some potential Fall Update facts on the back of his recently purchased Guitar Hero III keychain. More specifically, the keychain text hints at a new family timer and reads ...
Family Timer
- A simple tool that lets you manage how much time your kids spend on their Xbox 360.
- Manage time in daily or weekly increments. Easy for parent to suspend or add time.
- Available in December 2007 only through Xbox Live.
As you can see, the text doesn't solely mention family timer options for GHIII and instead uses the broad "Xbox 360" label.

In response to this week's Blu-ray Disc Festival in Los Angeles, Kevin Collins, director in the Microsoft Consumer Media Technology Group, defended the company's backing of the next-generation HD DVD format.
"The [Blu-ray] camp's claims about Microsoft's desire to have a format war are baseless," Collins said. "Microsoft has over 100 people working on HD DVD interactivity and we believe that HD DVD is the next-generation optical format."
During a presentation to journalists and home theater enthusiasts at the Blu-ray Festival earlier in the week, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment worldwide president Mike Dunn intimated that the format war is being perpetuated by Microsoft in the hopes of confusing consumers so much they don't support either format and ultimately buy their entertainment online. He didn't mention the computer giant by name, but blasted "the orchestrated campaigns of confusion and anti-consumerism fueled by an 800-pound gorilla that would prefer to force us all into the practice of paying tolls for the right to exchange information and enjoy entertainment."
Collins said Microsoft did not and will not bundle the HD DVD drive in Xbox 360 because the company believes that gamers are first and foremost gamers.
"If you look historically at the attach rates (i.e. the number of DVDs purchased per DVD player) you will see that game consoles have a single-digit attach rate, while dedicated DVD players have an attach rate in the mid-20s," said Collins. "Microsoft knew if we put in an HD DVD drive that we would have to raise costs and disenfranchise our customers (that are primarily gamers) as the unit would become too expensive."

EA's The Simpsons videogame launches today and we've been giving the Xbox 360 version a prod - while capturing our gameplay skills on video.
Like most people on the planet, we love the Simpsons so decided to grab three movies for you to take a look at.
On show is a combination of the action and platforming in EA's game, puzzles and how the pair of characters present in each level - in this case Bart and Homer - work together to overcome conundrums and a sneaky peek at the Gaming Cliché unlocks.
Oh, and you also might like to check out the Tomb Raider parody and listen to Homer's quips.
The Simpsons parodies 30 years of videogaming, going right back to Pong and moving fun-pokingly forward through the ages.
In fact, EA has unturned as many gaming stones as it can, even going out East to Japan and including cheeky nods to the likes of Katamari Damacy and Okami.

Codemasters Online Gaming is hoping to release Sensible World Of Soccer this month.
"We are currently targeting a release at the end of November," COG's Jim Brown told Eurogamer in an interview published today.
"Of course this is all subject to passing the usual internal and Microsoft submissions."
Brown went on to talk about the reasons for the delay, which are not, he says, anything to do with licensing issues surrounding player and team names.
Brown also comments on the status of a potential PC port, and talks about the issues facing COG in making sure SWOS on XBLA lives up to its billing.
Check out the full interview for details.

HOO-AH! America's Army: True Soldiers reporting for duty! In demo form. On The Land Of The Free's Xbox Live Marketplace. 535MB.
As the description says: "Created by Soldiers, Developed by Gamers, Tested by Heroes". Vomited on by me. And yet it's not available here, sadly, so you will need to mount an unauthorised invasion of the US Marketplace to acquire it.
If you do, you will discover that you can team up with up to 15 other players to tackle enemies entrenched in a coastal village for a "dynamic co-op mission", or you can do an eight-on-eight "Squad Engagement" match.
You'll get to use all the real stuff the US Army uses in the field today, like the Blue Force Tracker and the Raven UAV but not the UN. Anyway, that's enough xenophobia for one morning.

Speaking to investors during a conference call, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that he was "highly confident" in Rock Band and didn't expect to be able to meet demand for the game.
"If I were you, on the nineteenth of November, I would get in line outside your favourite retailer, because we've got one hot product," Riccitiello said.
The game, which he described as a "band in a box," will retail for USD 169 when it launches for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 19 in the US. A slightly cheaper PS2 version, at USD 159, will be released in December.
"We've got a lot of inventory coming. My expectation is that it will sell through," Riccitiello said.
EA will follow with a European launch at the end of Q4, and expects the game to be similarly strong there.
"This is definitely not a sprint. We're not going to be able to put enough inventory to meet demand in North America or Europe this calendar year or this fiscal [year], but we expect this to sell through both the balance of FY 08 and through FY 09, with songs coming every week, add-on SKUs, all sorts of stuff."

Wal-Mart may have been the first to tempt HD-fence-sitters with a $100 HD-A2 player (however limited), but it looks like it's not the only one, with Best Buy now also listing the very same player for the impulse buy-inducing price of $99.99. Of course, it's sold out online, so you may be better off trying your luck at your local store. Not surprisingly, the HD DVD PR folk are keen to talk up this recent spat of price reductions, including the still decent $197 price for the A2 at Circuit City and Amazon, and Sears's Black Friday price of $169 for the newer HD-A3 model, which also comes with two movies bundled in the box (not to mention the five free mail-in movies available with the purchase of any of the players).

The judge in the middle of the squabble between Epic Games and Silicon Knights has refused to dismiss the lawsuit.
The latest motion to put a stop to proceedings was argued to a California judge by Mark Rein and Tim Sweeney, who said Silicon Knights had shown Unreal Engine 3 to those not authorised to see it, leaking all sorts of secrets about how it works to would-be competition.
Rein was also upset that Silicon Knights had signed a new game with SEGA allegedly built on a modified UE3 engine - something Epic never says it never got paid for or asked about.
Speaking to Eurogamer this afternoon, Rein pointed out that the dismissal of the motion is not a ruling on the veracity of the claims at the heart of the case.
"It is important to note that the judge did not rule on the merits of Silicon Knights' claims, despite what Silicon Knights might allege," he wrote in an email.
"Judge Dever's decision simply allows the discovery process to move forward so that he can rule on the facts.
"We are confident that the evidence will show Silicon Knights breached its license with Epic Games and violated our copyrights and trade secrets."
Silicon Knights filed a lawsuit against Epic Games in August, claiming the Unreal Engine 3 creator was in breach of its contract for not providing enough technical support because it was too busy making its own game Gears of War. The result was an elongated and unnecessarily expensive development period for Too Human, the developer said.
