In the 14th century a quarrel over English succession to the French throne escalated into what history would call the Hundred Years’ War. This ongoing war had exhausted the standing armies of both sides and there was a growing dependence on mercenary soldiers.
Now, take charge as a mercenary leader and contract your army to the English and French. With arrows raining from above, knights charging on horseback, and cannoniers firing volleys at heavy infantry, armies will collide in unprecedented scale and startling chaos on the battlefield.

It seems Mass Effect's dirty lesbian love scene (which is more Channel 5 than Ben Dover) has earned it a ban in Singapore, according to blog GameAxis.
The blog claims official sources have confirmed BioWare's ban in the region, and we're inclined to believe them after Bioshock and virtually every GTA game ever was banned in Singapore previously.
The scene in question has your character and a blue alien lover engage in a brief bed tumble, and it's already earned Mass Effect a tame 12 rating in the UK. Moderate sex is completely acceptable for our kids, it seems.
The final game is out in little under two weeks, and you can expect our review - complete with sordid virtual sex details - shortly.

1up Yours this week (11/09/07) mentions a couple of "hot rumors" near the end of the podcast. Here are the transcripts from the relevant segments in the podcast:
Shane (host/EGM editor): "I won't go into exacting detail because these rumors haven't been confirmed but they're definitely swirling around. They're probably gonna break next week. So a preview of what you may be seeing next week. A big Microsoft first-party title that has been in the works for a very long time that people are very excited for, sounds like it's being canceled. And a Microsoft executive who's pretty high up, who's been a voice for the company, sounds like he's on the way out. (1:58:11-1:58:37)"

Don Lindich posted this:
I enthusiastically recommend HD DVD because it's a better product and a better proposition for consumers. Signs are showing it is going to trounce Blu-ray, and soon. Surprised? Read on.
For those looking for a single sentence explaining why go with HD DVD: It's a better thought-out, more solid product than Blu-ray, it is half the price, and picture and sound quality are identical. At less than $200 including seven or more movies, HD DVD players are a stunning value. Why pay twice the money when Blu-ray has serious issues and the movies look and sound the same?
I smile when I see people buying HD DVD players based on bargain pricing, because they are unknowingly getting the Ferrari as well! Despite its purported superiority and much higher cost, Blu-ray is the emperor with no clothes. HD DVD has been superior since day one.
On the other hand, at launch Blu-ray's picture quality was horrible, generating barbs such as "needs to go to the scrap heap" and "who in their right mind would ever like this?" Though they have since closed the picture quality gap, almost all Blu-ray player models announced or existing are already obsolete. They conform to an early player profile that does not support upcoming disc features. Profiles should have been finalized before product launch! Blu-ray's record has been spotty at best, and if you say it sounds like they have been fixing it as they go along, I'd say you are right.

We'll have an Assassin's Creed review with you shortly but, in the meantime, here are six new screenshots from the game.
Due out Friday on Xbox 360 and PS3, if you've been living in a cupboard, Assassin's Creed follows the story of Altair, a medieval assassin on operations at the time of the Third Crusade and the war in the Holy Land.
Look out for the review later this week.

SEGA has narrowed down a date for Phantasy Star Universe expansion Ambition of the Illuminus.
The Live downloadable version will be out on 20th November and cost 1600 Points (GBP 13.60 / EUR 18.61), followed by retail PS2 and PC versions on 11th January for GBP 19.99 / EUR 29.99.
Ambition of the Illuminus has a new storyline to work through, new areas to explore and bigger monsters to kill and boast about.
There is also a new lobby area that is much bigger and has casino machines to gamble and win things on, as well as more customisation options like more weapons to hurt things with, more things to wear to stop you getting hurt, something called Photon Arts to do something with, and more clothes to dress up in.
Whether this will make up for the shortcomings we identified in our Phantasy Star Universe review is another thing, but we imagine that if you're still playing PSU then you're comfortable enough to look beyond them.

via Games Industry
A source at UK developer Rare has told GamesIndustry.biz that its Banjo-Kazooie title for Xbox 360 has not been cancelled, despite rumours to the contrary.
There is speculation that development of a major, first-party Microsoft title has been stopped. But, if true, this is "definitely not" Banjo-Kazooie, says the source at the Microsoft-owned developer.
Rumours have intensified since Shane Bettenhausen, of US magazine EGM, mentioned them on last week's 1up Yours podcast.
"A big Microsoft first-party title that has been in the works for a very long time, that people are very excited for, sounds like it's being cancelled," said Bettenhausen. He added that the story had a "97 per cent chance" of being true, and may break this week.
Much of the subsequent speculation has focused on Banjo-Kazooie. The finger has been pointed at the latest in the popular series of platform games due to the poor sales of Rare's other family-oriented 360 games, Kameo and Viva Pinata.

There have been a lot of highs and lows during Xbox Live Arcade's lifespan (like Geometry Wars versus say... Street Fighter turning out to be rubbish) but next week the download service will finally make it to the two year milestone.
In a double-whammy of milestones XBLA is also set to receive its 100th game during the same week period, so you'd expect Microsoft is planning to celebrate with a pretty decent release next week, eh? Well, that's exactly what our mate internet rumours is saying...
Xblarcade.com is the first site to quote "sources inside Microsoft," claiming that the company is well aware of the upcoming milestones and is planning something "huge" to celebrate.
"If everything goes well," says the site, "next week we will be playing the 'true' sequel to the biggest XBLA title to date." So they're blatantly hinting at a new Geometry Wars sequel then.
We've been on to our own sources and we too have heard rummagings of a new XBLA-only Geometry Wars, but then again after the success of the last one it's an absolute no-brainer that Bizarre Creations is developing a follow-up. Whether or not its coming out next week though, is anyone's guess.
Microsoft expectedly refused to comment on this particular rumour, but did note that Xtival, the free Xbox Live weekend, is planned for next week. We'll let you know if we hear anything else.

XCM 360 core cooler (add on fan) can be used with XCM High Speed air cooler (more efficiency and powerful) or independently, unlike another brand of external fan, external Xbox 360 fan can only cool the temperature of the Xbox 360's outer surface but does not cool the temperature of the CPU/GPU; therefore, making them useless to combat CPU/GPU overheating. XCM 360 core cooler directly cools down the temperature from the core (CPU and GPU) of 360 console.

Bungie jumped, Bizarre was bought, and Bioware went to EA. If you believe the pundits, the past month has been tumultuous and troublesome for Microsoft Game Studios' as its development partners go elsewhere. But MGS general manager Phil Spencer would beg to differ...
* What does the Bungie move say about Microsoft's attitude towards acquisitions - are you moving away from them?
* There's really no formula we're running at Redmond saying how many in-house or independents we want to have. It's on a case-by-case basis and looking at the kinds of games or relationships we want to have. If a studio came to us today with an idea we'd talk to them about what they want to get out of the idea, what we as a publisher want out of it, and then build the business relationship between the two to make sure we both get what we want. I remember about five years ago I was sat in Las Vegas with Epic about a game called 'Warfare' - which turned into Gears of War - and talking about our relationship, and working out that relationship from the beginning to make sure that the end result was something we'd both be happy with. So that's one example which has been fruitful but doesn't mean we have to own them. Of course there are partners like Rare or Lionhead, a more recent acquisition, were you end up at a different result but still have the same great relationship.
* But with the Bioware, Bizarre and Bungie news, many have speculated that it's a sign of weakness on MGS' part. One news site said the foundation of Microsoft Game Studios seems to be "built on quicksand".
* I will say - and I mean it respectfully - that I find it all a little humorous. I don't think people sometimes completely understand the relationship between a publisher and a developer. But I know what our relationships with our partners are, and I know the collaboration. I think speculation is fine - it's good to have smart people talking about what's going on. But I think this time next year, when we're sat here talking about a great Banjo game or a great Fable game, or other upcoming games, it will all be a distant memory. I understand the speculation - but quicksand in our foundations? No way.

It's official - 2007 will henceforth be known as the "Year of Broken Street Dates." First, BioShock was sold a week in advance by Toys R' Us, then there were the reports of number of early sales of Halo 3 throughout Europe, then the recent Rock Band mix-up at Best Buy, and to top it all off, a number of lucky gamers have apparently gotten their hot little hands on copies of Mass Effect from Kmart - a full ten days before the game's official release date.

When pressed about the Xbox 360's total units sold in South Korea, Dae Hwan Lim, marketing coordinator for Microsoft Korea's entertainment & device division (which includes the Xbox 360), conceded that "I can't say myself, but some reports here said about 100,000."
"It should be possible to pass Japan with the number of hardware sold," he added, but wasn't keen to elaborate, saying "I can't predict when."
Squeezed for further details, the marketer remarked that the "Xbox 360 is doing much, much better (than the PS3). There's a huge gap in market sales. I can't mention other company's numbers directly, but it's multiples larger."
