It's amazing how little has actually changed with the internal design of the console, obviously some components have changed (e.g. DRAM) but the general layout remains the same after two years.
Here's what's interesting: the CPU, GPU and eDRAM die all seem to have gotten smaller, but at different rates. The CPU sees the biggest reduction in size, the new core being about 75% the size of the old one, while both GPU components are around 85% the size of their predecessors.
It's possible that all three chips are now 65nm, or a mixture of 65nm and 80nm (TSMC's 80nm half-node process was used in ATI's R600 GPU). Needless to say, the chips are all smaller, which should yield some nice power savings.
The power savings of the new Xbox are dramatic:
Playing Halo 3 on the new Falcon consumes less power than the old Xbox 360 just sitting idle at the dashboard.

Saul Hansell from the New York Times spoke with Microsoft's J. Allard, formerly of the Xbox games division and now in charge of their push on Apple's captive audience with the Zune. Allard lays out Microsoft's media battle plan, highlighting their longterm goals for expanding beyond games and software. 'This service will at some point add more options for video and mobile phones, Mr. Allard said, without offering details. Actually, Microsoft has been quite successful selling video downloads and online movie rentals through the Xbox Live service already. This seems a bit too much like the initial plan for MSN. This new network would be the switchboard through which all entertainment content and communication flows. Pretty much everything else in the technology world now is revolving around open systems where the Internet, and some simple standards, are in the middle.'"

The Zune and Xbox product brands are ultimately meant to connect to the same network, says Microsoft's J Allard.
In a New York Times technology blog, the Microsoft exec talked about the company's online vision.
"The Zune guys have to run really fast. The Windows Mobile guys are on a two-year release cycle. The Xbox team now needs to focus on cost reduction, distribution and quality process. Everyone is on their own cadence. The one thing that transcends all this is the network as the nexus," he said.
Allard noted that the online services for Xbox, Zune and future products will merge.
"Today we have Xbox live for USD 50 a year. We have Zune Pass at USD 15 a month. We don't have a rationalized premium version yet.
"Fast forward a little bit, and you can image a menu like DirecTV. There is basic, there is enhanced, there is movie pack and NFL Sunday ticket."
Video will definitely be a key part of Microsoft's service.
"What I want to do at E&D [the entertainment and devices division] is build an entertainment service that can connect, that has a screen and buttons and a speaker, so you can watch what you want, where you want, how you want," Allard said.
In his vision, content providers will rely upon Microsoft to handle the technical details and marketing of selling their products, bringing that content to multiple platforms.
"We go in as a platform company and say to ESPN that we can offer preference information so you can curate programs in a way that has never been done before.
"And you don’t have to worry about multiple formats; we do it all for you on the back end. And you can reach all these eyeballs without lifting a finger."

Heres what they came up with:
* For the month of October, Xbox 360 led in total revenue with $354 million compared to $246 million for Wii and $116 million for PS3.
* Xbox 360 software revenue at retail surpassed that of Wii and PS3 combined.
* For the month of October according to NPD, Xbox 360 software represented 54 percent of total software sales (at $162 million dollars) for this generation, compared to 30 percent for Wii and 16 percent for PS3.
* Xbox 360 was home to seven out of the top 10 rated games through the end of October according to Metacritic.
* Of all 3rd party U.S. software revenue in October, Xbox 360 generated more than double that of the PS3 and Wii. Xbox 360 weighs in at 57 percent with $130 million, compared to Wii with 28 percent and PS3 at 15 percent.
* PS3 and Wii combined had one third party title in the top ten console title list for the month, while Xbox 360 weighed in with 2. Since November, third party partners have seen their titles hit the top ten 29 times for Xbox 360, compared to 2 for PS3 and 2 for Wii.
* In last week's earnings announcement from Electronic Arts, Xbox 360 represented 50 percent ($218 million) of their total revenue during the third quarter. In fact, EA titles on Xbox 360 outperformed those same titles on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii and DS combined.

It's been a while since we posted on the upcoming XNA Game Studio 2.0 release. The good news is that there will be a XNA Game Studio 2.0 beta available for you to download very soon!
This beta is considered "feature complete." This means that while we still have some issues to address, all of the features that will be in the release are included as part of the beta. However like all our previous betas, the beta is for the Windows-based computer functionality only and you will not be able to deploy games to the Xbox 360 system.
Unfortunately, there were a few things that didn't make it into this release. The most prominent being that you cannot host XNA applications in Windows Forms. All the other major features that we talked about earlier this year will be available!
Over the next few weeks, we'll be blogging about some of the new features in XNA Game Studio 2.0 and what's been changed. This should give you a good idea of what to expect in the release.

It's almost two years to the day since Microsoft launched the Xbox 360. So you would expect its successor to be well on its way towards fruition. But Microsoft has dropped only a few subtle hints about what form it could take, and hasn't provided any details.
The most significant statement so far has been about timeframe. Supposedly, the next generation Xbox will arrive next decade, possibly 2011 or 2012.
So here's the bottom line for the Xbox in 2011, based on current trends and what we know is happening over the next few years. Check back here in 2011 to see if we were right!
* CPU/GPU - Integrated chip with 16 x 5GHz processor cores, 32 x 2GHz graphics cores
* Memory - 8GB GDDR8
* Media - Dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive for backwards compatibility and movies
* Storage - 4TB hard disk for online game (and movie) delivery
* Built-in camera - for gesture-based control
* Built-in microphone - for voice-recognised control

GameDaily BIZ has received the latest monthly Famitsu marketing data service report for the period covering October 1 - 28. Although software sales fell by over 14 percent, hardware sales climbed 30 percent, resulting in overall industry growth of 2.2 percent.
The notable hardware news is that Microsoft's Xbox 360 has finally surpassed that of the original Xbox - within two years to boot. Through October 28 in Japan, the Xbox 360 has sold 474,000 units, exceeding the original Xbox total of 473,000 units. Famitsu said this was fueled partially by the arrival of the Xbox 360 Elite model (120GB, HDMI-enabled) on October 11. That said, Xbox 360 sold just 18,717 during October.

So Assassin's Creed is finally in the shops. Bought it yet? You can read our review here in case you're still sitting on the fence. And in case you're musing over which format to pick up, why not take a look at our 360 / PS3 comparison movies while you're reading our verdict.
But what about that massive twist Ubisoft made everyone pretend wasn't there? You know, the one we all got wind of at the end of Jade Raymond's live demo at X06 when the screens went all wavy when Altier died? Looked like something out of Total Recall to us...
Turns out the massive secret isn't even a twist, it's the whole premise for the game. And it's revealed in the game's intro, which is a bit of an anti-climax if you ask us.
Anyone who plays Assassin's Creed will discover the truth in a matter of seconds of starting up a new game.
Because we've been bound by goodwill to pretend it wasn't there - even when we (and the internet) all knew it was - we can't wait to get it off our chests. If you've already played the game than it won't come as a surprise at all. Just like if you've got past the opening cut scene.

Following in Sony's lead Microsoft is planning to bring DivX video support to the Xbox 360, says a report on XueCast.com.
According to the site the news was confirmed by DivX CEO Kevin Hell (great name), who said that his company is currently working with Microsoft to bring Divx MPEG-4 to the Xbox 360, though it's not high on MS's priority list.
Currently an un-modded Xbox 360 can only support video formats such as WMV, HD WMV, H.264 and MPEG-4.
Hell confirmed earlier this week that DivX support will also be coming to the PS3. "DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date," he said.
According to Hell, there are more restrictions surrounding software on the Xbox 360, so the 360 Divx project is moving at a slower pace compared to the PlayStation 3.
Good news if you fancy putting some of your mucky videos on your Xbox, and presumably it means developers can use it for games too.

Mark Rein has said Unreal Tournament 3 already works on Xbox 360, and it did as far back as last spring.
What he meant to say yesterday was that his team will "start working on it again" after Christmas, not begin from scratch, silly.
"What I probably should have said was 'start working on it again'. We had the game up and running on all three platforms up until last spring," Rein clarified to games blog Joystiq.
"We stopped working on the 360 version so we could concentrate our efforts on shipping the various PC and PS3 versions."
The PC version is out on 23rd November and we are all very excited, but there is increased concern over whether the PS3 offering will be out this year - it was announced as a console exclusive until the end of 2007 back at E3.
Rein and Epic Games offer only that it "will be done when it is done", and are working as hard as they can to make it so - even if they are taking Christmas off how dare they etc.
Once back and a few belt-sizes bigger they will get back to work on the 360 version, which will hopefully prove a cinch, given that Epic already made something or other for it that did quite well.
"Once we get [the PC and PS3 versions] out of the way, and take some time to enjoy the holidays with our friends and families, we'll start working on the 360 version again," Rein continued, hinting that PS3 owners will get it in their stockings after all.
"There's still a decent bit of work to do. For example we have simple LAN play but no Xbox Live implementation yet and we need to work with Microsoft to figure out how to accommodate mods on their platform."
We had a good old chat with Mark Rein recently and popped out words up yesterday for you all to read. Shove your head into our Unreal Tournament 3 interview to see what Epic has planned for a mod-hungry crowd.

via Games Industry
Singapore's Media Development Authority has reversed its earlier decision to ban Mass Effect, and will now allow the game to be released under an M18 rating.
As reported earlier, the Media Development Authority originally decided to ban the game in Singapore due to the inclusion of a sex scene between a human woman and a female alien.
The Board of Film Censors said in a statement that it will selectively use games ratings to "enable highly anticipated games to be launched in Singapore" until it puts a games classification system in place in January.
This will allow games to "enter the market with immediacy" while giving the games industry and members of the public a better understanding of the benefits of the proposed games classification system, the BFC said.
Singapore has previously banned games such as God of War 2 and The Darkness for nudity and religious expletives, but has allowed games with graphic violence to be sold with consumer advisory labels.

via IGN
A small retail fiasco has unfolded this morning with the revelation that major games retail chain, EB Games, has started selling the highly anticipated Mass Effect a week ahead of the official street date, November 22.
We sought Microsoft Australia for comment. They replied with the following:
""The stock slipped through our logistics provider early by mistake. The official release date remains November 22nd, we are working with our retail partners around this."
We actually ventured out to our local EB Games and came away with a copy of the game and some inside knowledge. We read the email instructions dated November 15 at roughly 3:30pm. To paraphrase, the email began with "Good news!" and stated that stock had just been received and was currently being distributed to branches Australia wide for a noon-time delivery. It also finished with instructions to "sell immediately" and call all preorder customers and notify them.
The Australian Mass Effect retail box we bought.
We've also sought comment from EB Games Australia and are currently awaiting a call back.
Update: We just spoke to a senior member of the EB Games Australia head office team. He confirmed that there was no embargo issued on the game, unlike Halo 3 or the upcoming release of Assassins Creed. He also stated that it was EB Games' policy to adhere to any requested street date release provided and, since there was none for Mass Effect, the decision was made to sell it.
The official EB Games Australia website currently displays an image promoting the early release of the game. It is not currently known what impact this will have on the sales reactions of other retail chains; however a JB Hi-Fi games manager indicated to us that they were adhering to the original release date.
We'll provide updates as information presents itself. The current review embargo for websites still stands at November 20. Look for our review around that date.

A free update for Guitar Hero III is now available to download on Xbox Live.
Its 72MB and gives you original compositions by hairy guitarist Slash and Tom Morello, as well as cover track Devil Went Down to Georgia as made famous by The Charlie Daniels Band.
Worth pointing out that this is already in the game, but now you can get it without thrashing your way to the necessary bit of the single-player mode.
This is all theoretical for us Europeans, naturally, as GH3 is not actually out here until next Friday. However, the US already has two downloadable song packs from Velvet Revolver and the Foo Fighters, and if you are unsure about either you can watch new trailers for them on Marketplace to make your mind up.
Slash is in Velvet Revolver, though, and they were awesome at Live 8. He is awesome in general. Lovely leather trousers and hair.
Go and read our Guitar Hero III review and get excited. Best yet.

I have gotten quite a few questions about yesterday's Xbox Originals announcement. Specifically, folks want to know if these games will have additional functionality like Achievements and Gamer score. The answer is no. These are the original games that were created before Xbox 360. In order to preserve the integrity of the original gaming experience they provide, they will have the features available at the time of their initial release. I hope that clears that up.
I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I thought it would be best to get clear up an misunderstanding up right up front. I'll talk more about it on my show this week. Would it have been cool? Sure it would ...but as many folks have noted, for a variety of reasons it's just not possible.
