New from Play Asia
Guilty Gear 2: Overture uses an action-based gameplay similar to the Devil May Cry series while retaining special moves and animations that have been used in past 2D Guilty Gear fighters. Aside from the simple genre change compared to it's arcade fighter predecessors, Overture features a troop management system as well as certain points around each of the levels that can be captured to be a spawning point for troops. Various troops from the demo include the light infantry, capable of a special attack; Heavy infantry, capable of launching and juggle attacks; as well as magical troops which can heal and perform status increasing spells.
To win, players must directly attack each other or each others Masterghost, an immobile and defenseless 'main base' or spawning point for each player. Each time a player is defeated, they respawn by their Masterghost in exchange for a portion of the Masterghost's lifebar. Victory will be rewarded through: beating the enemy enough times so their Masterghost cannot revive them, directly attacking and defeating the Masterghost, or winning by basis of who has more life once a predetermined timer reaches zero.

Konami has released patches for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008.
"The free download addresses the online lag and the slowdown that affects the game in both online and offline modes," the publisher says on its website, which rather fittingly sports a sidebar image of a blonde Castlevania man chasing footballers with a whip.
"The PlayStation 3 update also fixes problems associated with downloading the game to the console's hard drive."
That's good news, because as you may recall the PS3 version of PES 2008 is a bit shonky. A recent Konami FAQ update revealed that you could circumvent some of the problems by running it off the Blu-ray disc rather than the hard disk, and that you could sort out some of the stuttering problems by, er, buying an HDTV.
Early reports from the relevant threads in our Xbox 360 and PS3 forums suggest that it's at least had some effect.

We've already had a few reports of some problems with the latest Zunes (and the latest firmware), and it now looks like there's another issue brewing, with a number of users complaining of battery problems with Zune 30s and 80s loaded with the most recent firmware. Apparently, the Zunes have the unfortunate tendency to rapidly drain their batteries, even when the player is not in use. Judging from the discussion on the Zune.net message boards, that particular issue seems to be due to some unknown difficulty the Zune has with entering hibernate mode which it, seemingly, doesn't do at all (at least among those who've reported problems). Those finding themselves plagued by similar battery issues can apparently "fix" the problem by holding back and down on the d-pad to shut the Zune off completely when its not in use, although we're guessing few will be completely satisfied until Microsoft chimes in on the matter.
Update: Zune-Online.com has gotten word of another fix that appears to solve the issue, at least on the Zune 30. To get things started, you'll have to first drain the Zune until you get the exclamation point, and then fully charge it again (leaving it overnight, if necessary). After that's done, you then reset the Zune by pressing up and back simultaneously, which should set things back on track . Not a perfect solution, obviously, but it seems to be the best option for now.

PSP and PlayStation 3 title GripShift is heading to Xbox Live Arcade next month.
Developed by Sidhe Interactive, GripShift is a mixture of racing and puzzling somewhat akin to TrackMania except floatier.
Players zoom around levels suspended in the sky, collecting stars and hidden "GS" logos while trying to beat a target time. Wacky physics and track design mean there are lots of shortcuts to be uncovered, and per-track leaderboards mean there's a lot of ground to be fought over.
It's already available as a downloadable title for PS3 owners, and the Xbox Live Arcade version will offer 120 challenge mode levels, updated graphics, leaderboards, four-player online modes and the usual unlockable Achievements.
No price has been set just at the moment, but we're told to expect it in December, which - given that Sensible World of Soccer is due out on 19th December, presumably means either 5th or 12th, since it's probably not coming out on Boxing Day.
Xbox 360 owners who want to know more can always hold their noses while they check out our GripShift PS3 review, and can expect to find out more for sure soon.

Microsoft continues its support for backwards compatibility on the Xbox 360, with the company announcing a further 80 original Xbox titles will now play on the home console.
The number of Xbox titles playable on the 360 now totals over 300, with online games playable cross-platform between Xbox 360 and the original Xbox over the Live service.
New titles added to the list include Burnout 2: Point of Impact, Fight Night Round 3, The Chronicles of Narnia and Worms 3D.
As well as playing original Xbox games on the 360, from next week users will be able to download a select number of titles from Xbox Live for 1200 Microsoft Points, as the company continues to make the most of its back catalogue.

We've seen Nintendo's famed NES brought back to life thanks to a needle and some thread, and now Microsoft's latest console is getting the hand-sewn treatment, too. eBayer inkyfingersjunior has apparently found his / her calling in life, as these Xbox 360 plush pillows look pretty snazzy. The units reportedly take some five hours to create and measure almost the same size as their functioning counterparts, 'cept these come with a little extra fluff and a lot less hardware. Currently, a number of variations are available to the highest bidder, but we can't help but favor the comical "Red Ring of Death" edition. Good luck resisting, fanboys.

As a composer, Marty O'Donnell (with Michael Salvatori) is responsible for one of gaming's most memorable scores. As audio director at Bungie, he's seen the company bought by Microsoft then break away again.
* You joined Bungie full-time ten days before it was sold to Microsoft. Now that Bungie's independent again, do you see your life changing much?
* Oh, yeah. Friends used to say: "You'll never work for a corporation." So when I ended up going to work for Bungie who were then bought by Microsoft, they said: "This won't last." It's never been a goal to stay as an employee of a large corporation. And that's also the spirit of Bungie: we stayed separate from Microsoft. And I think Microsoft always treated us that way: they allowed us our own building, they never tried to interfere with us, for the most part, creatively, and the relationship worked fine. But it was inevitable that independence was such a strong part of the DNA of Bungie, it was something we all knew had to happen again. And I think Microsoft agreed.
* Was Bungie feeling slightly stifled by being part of Microsoft?
* I don't think we had gotten to the point where we were being stifled, but I think Microsoft agreed that they would get the best stuff to publish if they had this independent company that they had a good relationship with. This is the problem being wholly owned and being employees: the mechanisms for reward and for penalty are just not strong enough. We really just thought it's going to be healthier for us as a small company to be closer to success or failure.

Xbox 360's now come in 4 flavors: the Elite, the Premium, the Arcade and the Halo 3 box. Halo 3 boxes are easy to find. People just don't seem to like that color so they aren't jumping on it. Arcade systems are here and there. In my travels through many stores I was unable to find Premiums in abundance. Some stores had none at all while others had just a few. The Elite however, has disappeared off the planet. I did not see one Elite this weekend at all.

Following landmark Black Friday promotions through major retail chains, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group today announced that sales of dedicated HD DVD players exceeded the 750,000 mark. The data is based on retailer reports and other point of sale data, and includes standalone set-top players as well as the Xbox 360 HD DVD player.
"HD DVD continues to gain momentum and market share with consumers," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group. "With more than four weeks left for holiday shopping, HD DVD is turning out to be a perfect consumer electronics gift."
HD DVD continues to step up marketing and education efforts, helping consumers to see the quality and value of the new format. In addition to an enhanced presence at major retailers, HD DVD has added educational sections to its website at http://www.TheLookAndSoundOfPerfect.com.

The latest Greener Electronics Guide sees Nintendo become the first company to score 0/10 for its policies and practices on toxic chemicals and takeback.
Greenpeace ranks companies on two criteria - the clean up of products by eliminating hazardous substances and the takeback and recycling of products once they become obsolete.
Microsoft scored 2.7/10, with points for chemical management and for setting a timeline to phase out PVCs by 2011.
Sony scores much better than its rivals, with 7.3/10, although this covers the whole of the electronics company's products. With no mention of the PlayStation 3, it's noted that Sony produces many products that are free from PVC including the VAIO notebook, Walkman, camcorders and digital cameras.

Microsoft is introducing more social networking features to its celebrated Xbox Live service.
As part of the Fall update going live on December 4, users will be able to view Friends lists directly from the Dashboard, or keep the list private.
Citing popular web services Facebook and MySpace, the publisher believes that "this type of capability has largely come to be expected from consumers as a means to relate in an online community."
The new dashboard update will also allow users to download original Xbox games – including Halo and Fable – for 1200 Microsoft Points.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developer GSC Game World is currently keeping lips firmly sealed regarding specific Xbox 360 projects it has in the pipeline.
"We haven't made any Xbox 360 project announcements yet, all the news will come in later", GSC's senior PR manager Oleg Yavorsky told CVG when queried earlier today on the studio's recent announcement on it becoming a certified Xbox developer.
In addition to being behind S.T.A.L.K.E.R., GSC is also known in the PC gaming world for strategy series Cossacks and RTS-RPG hybrid Heroes of Annihilated Empires (and, going back some, shooter Codename: Outbreak).
Naturally if we were betting people we'd put money on the developer's first Xbox 360 game having S.T.A.L.K.E.R. plastered all over it.
When asked when we can expect GSC's first Xbox 360 announcement, Yavorsky replied, "No comments at this point."

Microsoft has told us tomorrow's Live Arcade treat will be a double pack containing Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe.
This rocky offering could be yours for 400 Points (GBP 3.40 / 4.65), and takes you back to the olden days of vector graphics as you blast your little spaceship around and break up enormous asteroids as they hurtle towards you.
Deluxe is the sequel to Asteroids, and both will come HD visuals with a high-speed "throttle monkey" mode to make things a bit trickier - plus the usual Leaderboards to climb and 200 Gamerpoints to earn.
Look out for our review of Asteroids soon.

Sources close to Codemasters have revealed that Sensible World of Soccer will be available on 19th December, just in time for Christmas.
Word slipped on the publisher forums where community manager "Rubbergenius" leaked the date.
Neither Codemasters Online Gaming or Microsoft have been available to comment - the publisher told us last week that an announcement was expected soon - but we understand the date is accurate.
Sensible World of Soccer is based on the 96/97 version of the classic football series. Everything has been faithfully recreated here from the humorous teams to the management options and team editing.
Pop over to our first impressions of Sensible World of Soccer to see why we are so excited.

Empire has revealed plans to release a continual stream of new content for Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe on Live Arcade, a bit like a persistent nosebleed.
The first of these was a Theme Pack to decorate your Dashboard with, which will be followed this week by a bundle of new Arena locations each with three variations to keep things fresh.
Then, in order, we will be treated to a collection of Gamerpics, more superstar players, fresh team strips and a final compilation of Gamerpics. Each will cost between 100 and 150 Points (GBP 0.85 and 1.28).
Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe is a remake of the retro sports gem for Live Arcade. If you really must know, it is a futuristic sports game not too dissimilar to American Football, just with more body armour, less rules, better steroids and an metal Olympic hammer-like ball. It also costs 800 Microsoft points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.30).
We loved it back in 1991 and we heart the Live Arcade version. Pop over to our Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe review to find out why.
Alternatively you can pop into our Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe gallery for some exclusive snaps of the new content.

As made famous earlier this month, EA has slung up yet more downloadable content for Rock Band.
This week's offerings are from David Bowie, and come in the form of the David Bowie Pack 01 on Xbox Live Marketplace, which costs 440 Microsoft Points (GBP 3.74 / EUR 5.12).
It should also appear on the PlayStation 3 Store, although we can't check whether it's up at the moment because of cloud cover/ducks. New content typically arrives on PSN on Thursdays.
So what's in the pack? Well, 400 Points gets you the proper version of Moonage Daydream, along with covers (aw) of Heroes and Queen Bitch, or "Queen ***" as Microsoft's calling it. If you prefer to buy them individually, they're 160 MS Points (GBP 1.36 / EUR 1.86) apiece.
Thanks to the magic of pre-announcements, we can also safely predict that next week's content will be Black Sabbath tracks, followed by some punk a week later and some others (ooh, Iron Lung) as we edge further towards Christmas.
Rock Band is out now in the US on PS3 and 360 and will be released in Europe in Q1 2008.

We remember the days when shots that were this good-looking were guaranteed to be renders, but these are game-engine shots and it looks brilliant.
All Tecmo needs to do is drip-feed us with these sweet shots of Hayabusa slicing faces off of lesser ninjas. We're already sold on the 360-exclusive sequel, which looks like it'll be one of the most violent games of the generation so far.
Considering it already looks this good, we're hoping that it'll be out by the summer.

- Friends only (available to members 13 and older)
- Blocked (available to all members, and automatic for anyone under the age of 13)
The default setting will be Everyone for gamers 13 or older, but you can log in to the Xbox web site in advance to change your preferences before Dec. 4. Microsoft hasn't announced any additional features planned for the fall update, but Xbox Live's Major Nelson confirmed that more are on the way.
