Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the new head of its Xbox division this morning: Phil Spencer, longtime Microsoft Studios leader and Xbox game dude. In Spencer's initial letter to the legions of Xbox owners the world over, his approach comes across as scattershot. See for yourself:"This past year has been a growth experience both for me and for the entire Xbox team. We've taken feedback, made our products better and renewed our focus on what is most important, our customer. Our mission is to build a world-class team, work hard to meet the high expectations of a passionate fan base, create the best games and entertainment and drive technical innovation. As we continue forward, this renewed focus and mission will be a foundational part of how I lead the Xbox program."
Given that, our first question to Spencer in a short phone interview this afternoon was one of clarification. With so many aspects of Xbox to oversee, where will he begin? "I'm gonna lead with a gaming focus and making sure that's where we're led. That's the North Star for the organization," he told us.
Beyond coming from a background at Microsoft Studios -- the name for a group of internal game development groups at Microsoft -- Spencer's known for being game-focused. He reaffirmed this approach to us. "Winning with the gamer first is gonna be something that drives the organization," Spencer said. That's at the heart of his boss Satya Nadella's Xbox reorganization.
With Spencer's title change comes a heap of new responsibility (due to an internal reorg). He's not just overseeing the Xbox One and Xbox 360, but the entire ecosystem around the greater Xbox brand. That includes the following departments: Xbox, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, Xbox Video and Microsoft Studios.
Spencer actually fought for all this oversight. In a discussion with Nadella, as well as Windows boss Terry Myerson and devices lead (former Nokia head) Stephen Elop, he had two stipulations. The first was the unification of Xbox under one umbrella; the second was a seat at the table with the likes of Myerson and Elop. "The Xbox team, the Xbox leader (me) sitting at the same leadership table as Terry (the Windows team leader, the Windows Phone OS team leader) really helps us look at gaming as that first-class citizen across all Microsoft platforms," he said.
More tightly, intelligently integrated Xbox services across more Windows platforms is something Redmond's struggled with for years. With Spencer, there's hope that someone with a real sense of the game industry can bridge the longstanding divide.
The next major beat for Spencer's Xbox will, naturally, be E3. He said we'll hear dribs and drabs before then -- some games will get launch dates, the first ID@Xbox games will arrive on the Xbox One -- but expect Xbox to once again lean on the all important holiday sales season for its major game releases.

Hitman Absolution and Deadlight will be free to download in April for all Xbox Live Gold members.
Microsoft announced on the Xbox Wire that the assassination game from IO Interactive and Square Enix will be free from April 1 through 16. Released in November 2012, Hitman Absolution is usually priced at £14.99/$19.99 on the Xbox Games Store.
CVG's Hitman Absolution review concluded: "Feels like 'proper' Hitman, mixed with new ideas of varying quality. Crucially, it's great fun, and you'll want to play Absolution through more than once."
Survival horror sidescroller Deadlight will be available from April 16 through 30. It normally costs £11.99/$14.99 on the Xbox Games Store.
In our Deadlight review, we said the Xbox Live Arcade title was "not smart or precise enough to be a puzzle-platformer, but as a cinematic one it's unrivalled."
Announced at E3 in June 2013, Games with Gold gives XBLG subscribers two free games to keep each month, with a new title made available on the 1st and 16th of each month.
While it was originally revealed as a limited time campaign, Microsoft said in October that Games with Gold would be an "ongoing benefit" with no end date planned.
In November, the platform holder also revealed plans to launch Games with Gold on Xbox One in 2014.

Xbox One Games with Gold "might not look exactly the way things have looked in the past," according to Phil Spencer.
The service selects two Xbox 360 games for Xbox Live Gold members to download free every month. Spencer, who waspromoted on Monday to head of Xbox, told IGN that Microsoft is considering feedback to the program while it works on the Xbox One version.
"The Games With Gold program on Xbox 360 has been successful for us," Spencer said. "It's been part of the value people see in [Xbox Live] Gold, something we recognize that isn't on Xbox One that isn't there today. We haven't announced a plan, but people should understand that we understand the expectation that people have around what the value on Xbox One Gold should be. It might not look exactly the way things have looked in the past, but the recognition that that form of content and that perk for being a Gold subscriber is important to people, something we definitely hear."
Spencer avoided a direct comparison to Sony's PlayStation Plus program, which provides a rotating selection of free games that are playable as long as users remain subscribed. But he said the company is working "to make sure we're trying to match what customers want."
Hitman Absolution and Deadlight will be available free in April through the Games with Gold program.

Phil Spencer is the new boss of Xbox, Microsoft has announced. The former Microsoft Studios chief will lead the Xbox, Xbox Live and creative teams, which include Xbox Music, Xbox Video and Microsoft Studios."Combining these teams will strengthen the connection between some of the world's most innovative creators and those building the Xbox itself," Spencer said."I am incredibly proud of the talented Xbox employees around the world and believe, like they do, in the power of technology to bring games and entertainment to life across console, PC, tablet and mobile devices. It's been a remarkable year for Xbox and I am honoured to lead the team at this incredible time for Microsoft and the games industry."Spencer takes over Xbox nearly six months after the launch of the Xbox One, which has sold faster than its predecessor the Xbox 360, but is being outpaced by Sony's PlayStation 4."This past year has been a growth experience both for me and for the entire Xbox team," Spencer continued."We've taken feedback, made our products better and renewed our focus on what is most important, our customer. Our mission is to build a world-class team, work hard to meet the high expectations of a passionate fan base, create the best games and entertainment and drive technical innovation. As we continue forward, this renewed focus and mission will be a foundational part of how I lead the Xbox program."You will hear much more as we head into E3, but we are at the beginning of an incredible new chapter for Xbox and I can't wait for the days and years ahead. This is going to be fun."In an email to Microsoft employees, CEO Satya Nadella praised Spencer's work on Xbox, and said he would report to Terry Myerson, who leads the Windows and Xbox operating system group at Microsoft. This will allow Microsoft to "keep gaming close to the group developing operating systems across devices", Nadella said."Combining all our software, gaming and content assets across the Xbox team under a single leader and aligning with the OSG team will help ensure we continue to do great work across the Xbox business, and bring more of the magic of Xbox to all form factors, including tablets, PCs and phones."He added: "I love the way the Xbox team is focused on great games and gaming experiences (go, Titanfall!), connects with its fans, pushes the boundary of entertainment and has embraced the power of the cloud in such interesting and impactful ways. Phil is the right person to lead Xbox forward.".

The next two free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be stealthy adventure Hitman: Absolution and 2D survival-horror affair Deadlight, Microsoft has announced. The former will be available from 1st - 16th April, while the latter takes its place from 16th-30th April.Eurogamer editor-in-chief Tom Bramwell had mixed feelings about IO Interactive's 2012 resurrection of the Hitman franchise. He called it a "slick, responsive and mechanically confident game," in his Hitman: Absolution review, but noted that "a range of compromises to Hitman tradition mean it's still going to rub some people up the wrong way." Based on Bravely Default's success, it sounds like publisher Square Enix is looking to shake things up a bit with the Hitman series going forward. Our features editor Martin Robinson felt similarly lukewarm towards Deadlight. "Its flattening of a tired apocalyptic premise doing enough to make sure that it feels fresh," he wrote in hisDeadlight review. "It's a worthy successor to other 2D XBLA adventures, but in the end you can't help feeling that this one could have done with a little more depth."

Metro publisher Deep Silver has confirmed that Metro Redux, the next-gen rendition of the Metro games, is in fact real. The publisher sent Eurogamer the following letter explaining the situation:A short letter to the Metro fans - past; present; and future...Metro Redux. You may have heard of it... even though you probably shouldn't have!We could issue a 'We do not comment on rumour and speculation' statement and pretend this never happened. They're pretty boring to read. They're also pretty boring to write. So we're going to comment on rumour and speculation instead. Is Metro Redux real?Yes. We never made any secret of 4A's desire to bring Metro to the latest generation of console hardware. But what you saw leaked was taken from an old, internal planning presentation, containing some nuggets of truth but a lot of hypothetical ideas and place holder material.(Eagle eyed fans will recognize the artwork on the 'packshot' as the art from the original Russian edition of the Metro 2033 novel. And that 'logo' is just the old Metro 2033 logo with the '2033' scrubbed out and 'Redux' added... )As you can see, we're not quite ready to reveal 4A Games' first next-gen console project, but we will be making an announcement this side of E3.And we think the reality is a lot more exciting than the out-dated material that got leaked shows, and we're itching to share it with you. Just not yet.ORIGINAL STORY 9.30 am: New images have emerged revealing what looks like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of atmospheric shooters Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. The images, below, show off a game called Metro Redux, and is listed for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It's supposedly out in July and is developed by the series creator 4A Games. It includes Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light. There's also mention of a day one DLC token, soundtrack, art cards and limited edition packaging. The images first popped up on Italian website Everyeye.it, but were removed - not beforeAGB picked them up.We've asked publisher Deep Silver for comment.Metro 2033 released on PC and Xbox 360 in March 2010. The follow-up, Metro: Last Light, launched on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in May 2013.

The rumors swirling around Microsoft's me-too attitude regarding virtual reality may be more than idle gossip, according to TechCrunch. Citing unnamed sources, the site reports that Microsoft has purchased augmented reality-related intellectual property of wearable tech company Osterhout Design Group for between $100 and $150 million.
The big thing to note here is that Microsoft's IP acquisition revolves aroundaugmented reality, not virtual reality. Think Google Glass, which is augmented reality, vs. Oculus Rift, which is virtual reality - the former lets you see the world with more information and visual enhancements, while the latter completely replaces the world and what you see with an entirely separate one.
It's also not clear whether this acquisition will lead to anything resembling the Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus for the Xbox; wearable tech is gaining traction in the mobile markets, with devices such as the Galaxy Gear from Samsung now on their second design iteration. In other words, Microsoft's acquisition of ODG's intellectual property may lead to new products which attach to Windows Phone as opposed to Xbox.
Really, any guess is fair game at this point. We won't know for sure how Microsoft intends to penetrate the VR and/or AR tech space until they themselves announce what, if anything, they're working on.

In a recent interview with Fortune, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson discussed his vision for the company, as well as the challenges he's faced, since taking over in September of last year. While most of the interview was a CEO issuing statements meant to assure his company's audience that they're focused on making great games, Wilson also noted the success of other publishers.
When discussing the company's recent licensing deal with Disney to produce Star Wars games, Wilson pointed to Warner Bros. Interactive's Arkham series as an example of how to do licensed properties right: "What Warner Bros. did with Batman was take the core roots of that IP and manifest that inside the walls of Gotham City and delivered an interactive experience that had real ties to what you would see in the films and what you had read in the comics, while having its own life because it could provide such deep and more immersive storylines," Wilson said.
"When we look at the Star Wars properties, that's how we're looking at it. We're not trying to build a game that replicates the storyline of any particular film."
Wilson also left the door open regarding what business model future EA games would follow. Comparing the mobile and home game markets, Wilson said, "I don't think ... that all of us are suddenly going to stop playing games on our 60-inch TVs because that's great gaming, and that's great entertainment. How you get that game there, I think that's anyone's guess."

Some say he invented the Internet, and that his laugh produces glass-shattering soundwaves. All we know is he's - but he is The Stig's Digital Cousin, and a challenge against him is coming to Forza Motorsport 5. A new Top Gear-themed DLC pack is racing toward the Xbox One-exclusive game, and it includes not only a challenge in which players get to face off against The Stig's Digital Cousin for prizes, but 10 new cars, including an Xbox One-themed 2013 Holden Commodore VF. You can see the full list of vehicles included in the Top Gear Car Pack after the break.
Though each of the 10 cars included can be purchased a la carte, you'll need the pack if you want to take on Top Gear's famous masked man in the official challenge. It's available now for $9.99. Those who complete the challenge will receive an in-game credit reward, while those in the top 10 for the challenge will receive additional prizes. The number one driver against The Stig's Digital Cousin will win a special Stig Prize Pack from Top Gear.
And don't worry, it won't take you long to get into the driver's seat and onto the asphalt. Dan Greenawalt, creative director at Forza series developer Turn 10 Studios, recently announced that cars bought as DLC - such as those included in the Top Gear Car Pack - no longer need to be purchased with in-game credits after their pack's installation. Instead, cars can be added to a player's garage immediately. Greenawalt wrote that this applies to both current and future DLC purchases.

Once it reaches the PS4, combat simulator War Thunder will feature cross-platform multiplayer between that user base and its existing PC audience. Unfortunately, Gaijin Entertainment CEO Anton Yudintsev told GameSpot that that cross-platform element is not allowed on the Xbox One, citing the limitation as the reason for War Thunder to pass the console by.
"Microsoft is not allowing cross-play completely; which means [War Thunder] cannot be on Xbox One," Yudintsev told GameSpot. He explained that Microsoft requires a certification of game servers to guarantee a positive experience for players, a goal that Yudintsev says "isn't possible under the current circumstances."
He added that Microsoft has a lot of "unspoken limitations" for free-to-play games, including a system of approval that's more based on whether the project's account manager likes the game, rather than a general set of rules. In contrast, Yudintsev stated that Sony is more open to free-to-play games, adding that the PS4 version of War Thunder is expected to support cross-play as early as next month.
Microsoft responded to the story, stating that it works with developers interested in supporting cross-play between the Xbox One and PC to "ensure a great user experience." On the upside, Yudintsev complimented Microsoft'sID@Xbox initiative, adding that he hopes Microsoft's changing policies for indie games will allow Gaijin to eventually launch War Thunder on Xbox One.
Update: This article has been corrected to reflect War Thunder's proper developer, Gaijin Entertainment rather than Gaijin Games.

Square Enix' next Deus Ex game could be titled Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
The publisher has secured a trademarked for that phrase in UK, having filed on March 27, according to a listing on the OHIM website.
Square and developer Eidos Montreal confirmed back in October 2013 that it was working on a new Deus Ex game for next-gen consoles and PC.
Studio head David Anfossi shared the news on the company's website, confirming that the core team behind 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution is working on the project.
Little more than a single piece of early concept art for the game (pictured above) has been revealed. The art was said to showcase the "trans-humanism segregation" which will act as the backdrop for the sequel.
"It represents a 'ghetto-city' voluntarily built in order to separate the classes," Anfossi explained.
"The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment, nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance. This dark and dystopian vision sets the tone for things to come in Deus Ex."
The appearance of the trademark could suggest Square may soon be ready to share more on the game - perhaps at E3 in June, if not sooner.

It seems likely that this year Microsoft will release Halo 2 Anniversary - a revamped version of Bungie's original Xbox shooter - although it has yet to announce it. But let's assume Microsoft had announced it. What, then, would be its most important feature? That's the question IGN posed to Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer at the Game Developers Conference last week. His response: multiplayer."In this fictitious world where that game existed," he said smiling according to IGN, "it's an easy answer: it has to be just the multiplayer experience that we all found in that first Halo 2 game. If you think about what happened in the franchise and what were the hallmark moments - when did duel wielding come in, when did another playable character that wasn't Master Chief come in?"All the things that you and I know about the evolution of the franchise, if you're going to say one thing about Halo 2, you're going to talk about real multiplayer. I think you just have to nail that in just such a fundamentally core way."Frankly [we'd have to do it] probably better than we did with Halo 1 Anniversary. I thought the multiplayer in Halo 1 Anniversary was good, but Halo 1 never had multiplayer in the truest sense, so it always was going to be something different.""If there were something called Halo 2 Anniversary," he added, "I think the multiplayer would have to be fantastic."Last month Spencer fuelled rumours of a Halo 2 Anniversary game on Twitter, saying: "Never get tired of questions on what's coming. Just can't always answer as we need news at events. Halo 2 is a good game..."Following that, Microsoft issued Eurogamer a statement that reiterated the company's promise to publish a Halo game on Xbox One this year. The question is, is it Halo 2 Anniversary, or a fully-fledged Halo sequel?"Other than confirming that your Halo journey on Xbox One begins in 2014, we have made no announcements related to specific titles," a Microsoft spokesperson said.Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary launched on Xbox 360 on 15th November 2011. It was a co-development between 343 Industries, Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity. This November marks the 10 year anniversary of the release of Bungie's Halo 2.

When Activision releases the Devastation DLC for Call of Duty: Ghosts on April 3, the addition may include a familiar face - or, more specifically, a familiar shimmering outline.
If you pay a visit to the Call of Duty Instagram account (or click through the break below), you'll find a short teaser clip that bears all the familiar hallmarks of the extraterrestrial hunter first made famous in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger action classic Predator. The vignette depicts a humid jungle, a crashed helicopter and the familiar staccato clicking of that film's titular creature. Though we're never given a good look at The Predator, the clip ends with a visually distorted, nigh-invisible creature rushing toward the camera.
While the inclusion of a classic cinematic monster might have seemed odd a few months ago, Call of Duty: Ghosts has been gradually moving away from strict realism and into the realm of pure entertainment spectacle. TheOnslaught DLC pack, which debuted in January, brought horror icon Michael Myers to the shooter, while the game's ongoing Extinction DLC storyline pits human soldiers against hordes of aliens in the wastes of rural Alaska.

Xbox One owners already have their fair share of video services to choose from in the US, but they're about to get a pair of welcome additions. Major League Baseball now says that MLB.tv Premium should be available to stream live games on the console in time for opening day. Meanwhile, Epix has revealed plans to bring its primarily movie-focused service to the Xbox One in the near future. And don't worry about being left out if you're still hanging on to your Xbox 360 -- Starz has just launched Encore Play and Movieplex Play apps for the earlier system, while Major League Gaming released its e-sports app yesterday. All told, it looks like you'll have plenty of viewing options this spring.
