We think Microsoft may have an addiction. On top of the Ultimate discounts on offer this week, Microsoft has announced an entirely different crop of cheap games, available through February 24. Two sales at the same time? Madness!
If you want to take advantage of Microsoft's lapse in judgment, you can grabRyse: Son of Rome for $40. We may even see more of this in the future, as Microsoft toys around with discount digital pricing on Xbox One.
Ridge Racer Unbounded is on sale for $5 and all of its DLC can be acquired for pennies on the dollar. Persona 4 Arena, Angry Birds: Star Wars and more on Xbox 360 are cheap too so, if you're interested, pop on over to Major Nelson's website for the full list of markdowns.

Eight more games are on sale for 24 hours in today's Xbox 360 Ultimate sale, including a few big names from a few years back. If you missed them back in the day, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Lost Planet 2, and Darksiders 2 are all on offer, as are Arcade offerings Hell Yeah! and Fruit Ninja Kinect - check out the full list of discounts on Major Nelson's blog.
In terms of more recent games, there's an eclectic mix to choose from. For starters, you can rake in a half-price Farming Simulator at $15/£15/20 euros, or if you'd prefer something a little faster, F1 2013 is two-thirds off at $16.49/£13.19/21.44 euros.
Finally, we saw Soulcalibur 2 HD Online go on sale over on PSN recently, and the Xbox Games Store follows suit with a whopping 75 percent discount. That means you can pick up the re-released fighter for just $5/£4/5 euros.
Don't forget, there's a bunch of games staying discounted throughout the week. The full list of them is here, but today we'll point your eyes towards the originalMass Effect. BioWare's sci-fi RPG started us on a path that's left us with hours upon hours plunged into deep space shooting, negotiating, and wooing, and if you've somehow avoided it over the last six years or so, it's a steal at $3.74/£3/3.74 euros.

A new Microsoft press release suggests Forza 5 is an Xbox One million-seller (rather than a million-shipper). According to the big M, more than a third of Xbox One owners purchased Turn 10's racer, and we already know the Xbox One notched 3 million sales by the close of 2013. When we input all that in to the Joystiq Supercomputer 6000, it beeps and whirs that Forza 5 sold at least a million units. So why didn't Microsoft just say that?
We stress "at least," because Microsoft stipulates its info is based on February 2014 sales data, and that hasn't been released yet. So the number of Xbox One sales should be a fair bit greater now, and in turn the third of owners who bought Forza 5. We'll have to wait for less cryptic press releases to confirm any of that, though.
The news revs in alongside new DLC for the game, including the free Road America pack that adds themed events to the Career and Rivals modes. Owners of the game's Car Pass are also getting a new five-car Road America selection, supplementary to the previously announced six monthly packs.

Joystiq wants to know: what do you want to play when you fire up a game bearing the name Doom?
We are now as distant from the release of Doom as we were from the release of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy when Doom first came out. These works have much in common. id Software's game opens with a blistering dose of action the likes of which had never been seen, just as Houses opens on the gleefully furious "The Song Remains the Same." Face it, players: Doom is our classic rock.
When classic rock acts come back, it's always a gamble. Would we really want a new Led Zeppelin album today? Not to disparage Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's solo records, but it's not like No Quarter held up to albums like Houses. By the same token, would we even want a new Doom in 2014? Do the design machinations of John Romero and John Carmack still merit exploration? Is their little universe something that can hold up to new stories?
No matter what, new Doom is coming. We don't know what it will be called, but when Wolfenstein: The New Order arrives, it will be playable. What do you want that to be, though?

The Xbox Games Store has another round of Ultimate sales going, and going by recent editions you may find your wallets and purses aren't safe. As per those previous sales, there are a bunch of games that'll stay discounted throughout the week - we'll get onto them in a mo - and there'll also be one-day-only sales going on from day to day.
Highlights from the first one-day-only batch include Halo: Reach, down 75 percent to $7.49/£6.29/7.49 euros, or if you prefer things stealthier and with less Chief, Dishonored is going for two thirds off at $9.89/£8.29/9.89 euros. On the Arcade side, auto-runner Rhythm 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien is an 87 percent-off steal at $1.94/£1.29/1.87 euros.
Moving on to the games that are on sale throughout the week ending February 25, there are plenty of big name titles on offer including Portal 2, Mass Effect,Driver: San Francisco, Arkham City, Fable 3, Rock Band Blitz, and Alan Wake's American Nightmare.
Today, however, our eyes are inevitably drawn to the madcap rollercoaster of rage that is Capcom's Asura's Wrath. If you've not yet experienced its brand of quick-time insanity and gradually growing ire, you can remedy that with an 81 percent discount that slams it down to just $7.59/£5.69/7.59 euros.
Head over to Major Nelson's blog for the full list of games on sale.

February 17th, 2014, 22:01 Posted By: wraggster
The price of one of Xbox One’s leading exclusives is being significantly cut on Xbox Live.
The platform holder said last month that competitive digital software pricing was “on the agenda”, and this looks set to begin with what could be a cut to £34.99 for Ryse: Son or Rome.
“Lot of people asked for better deals on our digital marketplace, so we’re testing some and February 18th-24thyou can get Ryse: Son of Rome off digital marketplace for $39.99,” Xbox studio manager Mike Ybarra said.
“That’s far better than the used price at GameStop and others! Go digital! I am 99.9% sure the UK price will be the equivalent in region – but sent a note to double check. Will post when I hear (it’s early here).”
Sony has been running some reasonably aggressive discounting on its own digital store this year, without any noticeable drop in High Street retail support. With Xbox One continuing to trail the sales race, is now the time for Microsoft to start doing the same?

Microsoft will begin "testing" deals for digital versions of Xbox One games, starting with Crytek's Ryse.
From Tuesday, February 18 until Monday, February 24, Ryse will be available for $39.99 on the US Xbox One games store, as opposed to the $59.99 it currently costs.
Update: Mike Ybarra, studio manager for Xbox, has confirmed the UK price for Ryse will be £34.99.
The news was announced on Twitter by Xbox studio manager Mike Ybarra, who stated the temporary price drop was a response to player feedback.
"Lot of people asked for better deals on our digital marketplace," Ybarra said, "So we're testing some, and [from] 2/18 through 2/24 you can get Ryse: Son of Rome off digital marketplace for $39.99. Special deal on add ons starts 2/25."
He added: "That's far better than the used price at GameStop and others! Go digital!"
Ybarra also stated that he was "99.9% sure the UK price will be the equivalent", but added that he has to check this and will confirm later today.
At the moment Ryse costs £49.99 on the UK Xbox One games store.
Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb said last month that Microsoft plans to make the prices of its digital games more competitive in the future.
"We have some great stuff planned for Xbox One this year (and beyond)," he told a Reddit thread. "As soon as we can share some of the goodness, we will."
Hryb was then asked if Microsoft's plans included competitive pricing for digital downloads. His reply: "It is indeed on the agenda."

February 17th, 2014, 20:34 Posted By: wraggster
A Final Fantasy 7 remake - often called for by fans of the Japanese role-playing game series - is not currently in development, Square Enix has said, and it doesn't look like it will be any time soon. The last official word on the possibility of the game came from then Square Enix chief Yoichi Wada, who in June 2012 told investors that the company would only remake Final Fantasy 7 once it has made a Final Fantasy game that exceeds the quality of Final Fantasy 7.This, many fans will agree, has yet to happen. And, given Square Enix has a lot of Final Fantasy on its plate right now, it's hard to imagine the developer adding a remake of perhaps the most successful game in the series to the production pipeline. With the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy out the door, there's still ongoing work on MMO Final Fantasy 14, a PlayStation 4 version of that game, and of course high definition remasters of Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 10-2.Oh, and let's not forget Final Fantasy 15, formerly Final Fantasy Versus 13, due out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at some point.Last week, to coincide with the release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13, Eurogamer asked Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase - the person who directed Final Fantasy 7 - if it was, finally, time to say put the possibility of a remake to bed."I can honestly tell you I would love to do that," he replied. "If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There's no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen."Kitase mentioned "staff availability and budget" as two major barriers to the project being greenlit. This tallies with comments Kitase made in 2010, when he said in order to remake Final Fantasy 7 to the quality of Final Fantasy 13 it would take three or four times longer than it took to develop the divisive PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game. But there's another major barrier to the project being greenlit: Kitase's personal motivation to create it."Even if I casually say I would like to do that, because it would be a huge project I would have to motivate myself to the level that I really am prepared to take on this huge responsibility," he said."I don't know if those three things will happen simultaneously. It has to tick lots of very big boxes. I won't rule out the possibility, but it would take a lot to make it happen."But should I ever take it on, it would have to be the biggest project I've done. My life work. So I would have to be as highly motivated as that to end up with something I'm very happy with. It's a huge thing for me."

February 17th, 2014, 20:20 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft hasn't made things easy for itself. For a console with so many sub-1080p games, the quality of its internal hardware scaler has been deeply unsatisfactory up to now, resulting in poorer-than-expected image quality in a lot of key exclusives and multi-platform titles. The good news is that this weekend's Xbox One system update, which followed hot on the heels of the Titanfall beta, has seen Microsoft take positive steps in resolving the issue.First things first, though: what went wrong with the pre-patch scaler? Well, most notably, image quality was compromised by a poorly judged sharpening filter that actuallyemphasised jagged edges, while a distinct gamma shift was also visible on several games, resulting in unnaturally high contrasts that didn't exactly complement the artificially enhanced edges and upscaling artefacts. Ultimately, rather than helping titles such as Call of Duty: Ghosts and Assassin's Creed 4 better stand up to PS4 equivalents running at native 1080p, the scaler made them look significantly worse.Up until the new firmware shipped over the weekend, the only way to circumvent the sharpening filter on native 720p titles was by manually switching the console to match the game resolution, thus letting your TV or monitor take care of the scaling. However, this constant swapping between display modes was obviously a hassle and most people would never bother. It didn't solve the problem anyway: while games such as Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct and Call of Duty appeared smoother and more natural this way rather than using the scaler, forcing 720p output didn't seem to entirely disable the unwanted filter. A close look at edges on a pixel level showed that the sharpening effect (halos around objects) was still present, just operating with a significantly lower intensity. Furthermore, the technique simply didn't work on games that rendered in resolutions higher than 720p but below 1080p, such as Assassin's Creed (1600x900) and indeed the precious Titanfall beta (1408x792).So, how much of a difference does the new Xbox One firmware make? Is the sharpening effect gone, and what changes if any have been made to the scaling algorithm and the existing gamma set-up? In the run-up to the Xbox One launch, Microsoft promised us a quality upscaling solution, so we couldn't help wonder whether this update would finally deliver...

Halo 5 will not release in 2014, if comments made by Master Chief voice actor Steve Downes are accurate.
Speaking to Gamezone, Downes said a 2014 release for Halo 5 is unlikely, indicating that a Halo 2 Anniversary edition will release first.
"I think you may be ahead of yourself on Halo 5," Downes said.
"I wouldn't expect anything until 2015. What you can look forward to this year is an anniversary edition of Halo 2."
Downes' comments follow reports in January that Halo 5 was still on track for a 2014 release. At the time, Microsoft's senior PR manager for Halo, Rob Semsey, said "rest assured your next Halo journey WILL begin in 2014."
Now it's looking more likely that Semsey was referencing a yet-to-be-announced Halo 2 Anniversary edition.
It's not the first time rumours of a Halo 2: Anniversary edition have surfaced: sources close to Microsoft indicated to CVG last month thatsuch a title is due to release in November 2014.
In June 2013, Microsoft vice president Phil Spencer said the company had already discussed the possibility of reissuing Halo 2 in an Anniversary edition.

Microsoft's spring update for the Xbox One is here! (Cue triumphant trumpets.) It's a few days later than anticipated but, as they say, better late than never. The first major update for the console packs a host of improvements, including better Kinect voice recognition, improved all-round stability, and some key fixes to the dashboard -- such as onscreen meters for the controller's battery and free HDD space (check after the break for a complete list). You'll also be able to plug a USB keyboard in, which should make web browsing and searching a whole lot less painful. The update is rolling out to customers during "off-peak" hours in their local time zones. Or as the ever eloquent Larry Hryb put it, "never fear you'll see it sometime over the weekend." If you're taking advantage of Xbox's Instant On feature, the console will check for an update next time you turn it off.

Namco Bandai is spending big to make Dark Souls II the next big RPG blockbuster.
The publisher is splashing £1m on marketing the RPG, which is Namco’s biggest ever campaign. The title launches March 14th on PS3 and 360.
Dark Souls II is the sequel to the 2011 cult hit, which has garnered huge press attention with a number of celebrity and media fans.
“We really want to push Dark Souls as a franchise whilst looking after our core fans,” said Namco Bandai’s UK PR and marketing director Lee Kirton.
“It has our biggest TV, cinema and online support. We are spending over £1m on marketing in the UK, which is substantial for us. And we hope to sell over the units of the first Dark Souls.
“We view this as a reason to keep your PS3 and 360.”
The firm believes Dark Souls II can be a breakthrough for the series, and attract more mainstream RPG fans of titles like Skyrim.
“These games are very different beasts, but we think that fans of Skyrim, The Witcher and any RPG would be in to Dark Souls II and enjoy it,” said Kirton.
The firm’s cinema campaign includes spots around Robocop, Non-Stop, 300: Rise of an Empire and Need for Speed.
Print advertising has run for over a year, while the TV campaign begins on March 8th, running for two weeks across Channel 4, Film 4, E4, Channel 5, Dave, Sky 1, Sky Movies, Sky Sports and more.

February 16th, 2014, 00:20 Posted By: wraggster
Titanfall’s beta goes live this weekend. The final game will be released on Xbox One and PC on March 11 in the US and March 13 in Europe. The Xbox 360 version follows on March 25 (US) and March 28 (EU).
Six on six is quite enough, thanks. Respawn caused a brief kerfuffle last month when its co-founder Vince Zampella nonchalantly confirmed over Twitter that a maximum of twelve players could do battle in Titanfall’s online arenas. For a few online shooter devotees, that figure was worryingly low – compared to Battlefield 4’s skirmishes, it’s miniscule – but as players sampling the game’s beta for the first time today will discover, the player cap is a design decision, first and foremost; it’ll stop the game from turning into “a chaos factory,” as Respawn lead artist Joel Emslie puts it.“You know what, I understand where they’re coming from,” he told us at a preview event last week. “I think when you hear a raw number like that and you’re not familiar with the game then yeah, it can be a little off-putting but we’ve played the game with other player counts and there’s a very specific reason why we chose the number. It’s about making sure that there’s a nice balance of real human players and AI counterparts. We’re trying to do something new and we’re standing by it.”He’s right. Titanfall’s firefights are hectic enough, a slew of AI grunts filling out the map without making them feel clogged up or infuriatingly deadly every few minutes. There’s a subtlety and complexity to Titanfall which belies the thundering bombast of its impending arrival. It’s a game about stomping around firing missiles in giant mechs and running along walls unloading an assault rifle, sure, but there’s nuance here, too.Tellingly, its tutorial is lengthier than most. This isn’t just move, aim, shoot, go; both Pilot and Titan have sci-fi movesets that military shooters can’t justify within their more grounded fiction. The more striking additions include a timed cloaking device, double jumps and wallrunning for Pilots; a dash, a dodge, a Jedi-style vortex shield and a brutal melee smash for Titans. You won’t feel truly accustomed to all of your arsenal until you’ve felt the heat of battle for real, of course.

The February firmware upgrade for Xbox One is reaching consoles starting today. If you're using "Instant On," the low-power state that allows you to verbally boot up your Xbox One, the update will automatically download the next time you power down your console – during off-peak hours for your given time zone, that is. Xbox Live's Major Nelson says the patch should reach the entire Xbox One community over the course of this weekend.
This latest update introduces greater storage space management options for your Xbox One and makes controller battery levels visible by adding an icon to the bottom-right corner of the home screen. Xbox One owners should also find their controllers are now more precise.
Another major update beyond February's revision is already in the works for Xbox One and due in early March, prior to the launch of TItanfall. The focus of March's renovation is to revise how friends lists and party chats work, reverting both to a state similar to their Xbox 360 counterparts.
Microsoft has also announced a free Xbox Live Gold weekend for the US and Canada. Xbox Live Silver users on Xbox 360 can enjoy free multiplayer gaming and access to premium apps like Netflix until 11:59PM PT on Sunday, February 16.

Not all models of headset will be compatible with the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter coming out in March. Tritton's Warhead and Primer models, as well as the Xbox 360 Wireless Headset and Xbox 360 Wireless Bluetooth Headset are incompatible, as is any headset with the type of dongle you see pictured above. Even if your headset is compatible, however, there are a couple caveats to keep in mind.
According to an Xbox One troubleshooting page, a 2.5mm-to-3.5mm adapter cable included with the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter will allow you to connect to the device for chat audio, but not game audio. For that, you'll need additional cables. If your headset uses an optical audio cable, plug one end into the headset or headset receiver, and the other into the Xbox One's optical audio output port. If your headset connects using RCA, you'll need RCA audio output ports or a 3.5-mm headphone jack output on your TV. If you've got the latter, you'll also want a 3.5mm mini-to-RCA adapter cable.
The upcoming Xbox One Stereo Headset uses a single 3.5mm jack for both game audio and chat audio, so using it is a simple matter of plug and play. Mostly. Before you use either the Xbox One Stereo Headset or the Stereo Headset Adapter, you'll need to update the firmware on your Xbox Onecontroller. And how do you do that? You connect to Xbox Live, remove the controller batteries, plug in the adapter and headset of choice, install an update, and replace the batteries.
