Put your exclamation marks down! Despite previous-gen platform listings being absent from a recent Game Informer cover story, Konami has confirmed thatMetal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is still coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Hideo Kojima's next big title is also slated to hit Xbox One and PS4.
"MGSV TPP [The Phantom Pain] will be available on both current and next gen!" a Konami representative told Joystiq. We hope that clears it up for the many readers that sent us questions and tips in the wake of Game Informer's story.
The next installment of the Metal Gear story will ship in two pieces: a teaser adventure dubbed Ground Zeroes, due this March, followed by a complete sequel titled The Phantom Pain at an undetermined date.

Despite being an Ubisoft game now, South Park: The Stick of Truth doesn't require or even use Uplay in any way. The news comes from developer Obsidian, who took to its Twitter account to confirm the PC version is a Steam game, and a Steam game only.
As AusGamers notes, The Stick of Truth was a THQ game in a past life, so perhaps that's why it's not integrated with Ubisoft's distribution and DRM service. Obisidian didn't offer an explanation in its answers to fans' questions.
Whether or not the news leaves you happier than a poop at Christmas, the game is less than a month out. The Stick of Truth thwacks North America on March 4, Europe March 6.

Microsoft has scheduled an Xbox One system update for February 11, harnessing the computational power of its next-generation system to display real-time data on electrochemical energy expenditure within tethered input devices. So, yes, the controller battery life indicator is coming back, as seen above.
Though the controller's electrical endurance is one of the Xbox One's more successful features, it's also one of two oddly obfuscated bits of information. The other is also being addressed in the Xbox One's space-age update, which allows you to see how much room your games and apps are taking upon the 500GB hard drive. The lack of direct management options was one of the criticisms in our review of the Xbox One.
Microsoft says apps (like Netflix) and games (like Tomb Raider) will now be split into separate lists, queues, and restrooms. You'll also be able to better manage download and installation queues, and use a USB keyboard if you want a mechanical sound to go with the beeps and boops of text entry.
Xbox's Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten says the update has "lots of behind-the-scenes updates for developers," along with improvements to stability and Kinect voice command recognition. Whitten teases more information to come on "several new features we believe Xbox fans will love," including a hypnotic suggestion module.
The February 11 update will be followed by another on March 4, meant to prepare the system for Titanfall.

The incoherent party and friend systems on the Xbox One aren't ready forTitanfall - not even in Microsoft's opinion. A system update scheduled for March 4 will introduce "many new features and improvements, most significantly to our party and multiplayer systems," Microsoft has announced.
Microsoft has not divulged details yet, but says a new party and multiplayer system will be in place prior to Titanfall's arrival on March 11, 2014. The futuristic multiplayer shooter, which sees combatants run across walls and jostle around in muscular mechs, is viewed as one of the Xbox One's flagship games, though it is also being developed for PC by Respawn Entertaiment, and for Xbox 360 by Bluepoint Games.
If all goes according to plan, we'll be inviting you to our party with just a few effortless presses on that snazzy Titanfall controller.

Following yesterday's release of the second episode of Telltale's The Wolf Among Us, those who purchased a season pass on the Xbox 360 began reporting problems with their game.
"I bought the season pass but there is only an option to buy [Episode 2], no option to download it with the season pass," reads one of the few complaintssuitable for publication. 17 pages of comments follow that remark, the majority of which claim that owners of the season pass are not being given immediate, gratis access to Episode 2, despite having already paid for the entirety of The Wolf Among Us.
Telltale Games has yet to offer users a solution, but says that Microsoft is looking into the issue. "Note: Microsoft is investigating a current issue regarding season passes for TWAU on 360 and will supply progress updates via @XboxSupport," Telltale tweeted. So far, the @XboxSupport Twitter account hasn't mentioned The Wolf Among Us, nor provided additional information on this problem.
Update: Telltale has issued a more comprehensive statement, noting that the issue stems not from the developer but instead from ongoing problems with DLC on the Xbox 360. "We are aware of the issue on XBOX Live Marketplace affecting Season Pass owners of The Wolf Among Us where the user is still prompted to purchase Episode 2 even though they own the Season Pass. There appears to be an issue on XBOX Live affecting multiple titles with DLC offerings and Microsoft is actively working to resolve the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and are hopeful it will be resolved soon."

Grand Theft Auto 5 publisher Take-Two revealed in its latest financial report that it's "sold-in" (i.e. shipped) over 32.5 million copies of its latest open-world crimefest.
This might not sound like that huge an increase since it had already shifted 29 million units by the end of October, suggesting things have slowed down a lot, but by any other standard that extra 3.5 million is still quite impressive.Unsurprisingly, GTA5 sold like gangbusters out of the gate where it moved over 1.57 million units in the UK on launch day alone. After three weeks, it overtook GTA4's lifetime sales in the UK.Sadly, Take-Two is staying mum on the possibility of a PC or next-gen release of GTA5.The publisher also boasted about its sales of NBA 2K14, which has shipped over 5 million units with the entire series selling over 35 million copies. This has been a major boon for the publisher, which saw its GAAP net revenue increase to $1.86 billion in Q3 fiscal 2014 (i.e. Q4 2013), up from $415.77 million during the same time frame the previous year. Take-Two's net income also increased in a major way with a $578.4 million last quarter - a major increase over last year's $70.9 million.

Microsoft Studios chief Phil Spencer fuelled rumours of a Halo 2 Anniversary game - apparently due out later this year on Xbox One - in a tweet last night."Never get tired of questions on what's coming," he said. "Just can't always answer as we need news at events. Halo 2 is a good game..."This morning, Microsoft issued Eurogamer a statement that reiterated the company's promise to publish a Halo game on Xbox One this year. The question is, is it Halo 2 Anniversary, or a fully-fledged Halo sequel?"Other than confirming that your Halo journey on Xbox One begins in 2014, we have made no announcements related to specific titles," a Microsoft spokesperson said."Any report or listing to the contrary is based solely on speculation and rumour."The mention of a "listing" is in response to Spanish shop XtraLife.es, which has Halo 2 Anniversary down alongside what looks like placeholder box art.Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary launched on Xbox 360 on 15th November 2011. It was a co-development between 343 Industries, Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity. This November marks the 10 year anniversary of the release of Bungie's Halo 2.

Sega has labelled "incorrect" a report which detailed an unannounced Sonic the Hedgehog game for PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One.The publisher said its was "yet to announce details" of Sonic's upcoming video game slate - although a third Nintendo-exclusive game was previously announced as part of the company's "Nintendo Sega alliance" deal."Sega is yet to announce details of upcoming console video games for Sonic the Hedgehog or further details regarding the new Sonic CG TV series," a spokesperson for the company told Eurogamer. "The recent information coming out of Nuremburg Toy Fair was incorrect."For official and up to date news regarding Sonic the Hedgehog please go to www.sonicthehedgehog.com or follow Sonic on Twitter (@sonic_hedgehog)."ORIGINAL STORY 3/2/14 10.16AM: An unannounced Sonic the Hedgehog game is in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as Wii U, a new report suggests.
The untitled title was spotted on a product sheet for the Sonic franchise at last week's Nuremberg Toy Fair by Spindash (thanks,VG247) and is apparently due for release in 2015.Sega previously announced it was working on another Nintendo-exclusive Sonic title - the final part of the publisher's three-gameSega Nintendo alliance deal which has so far comprised Sonic: Lost World and Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games: Sochi 2014.There's no mention of the Nintendo-exclusive game on the franchise's roadmap - which raises questions as to whether the 2015 title is the same project, expanded to PS4 and Xbox One.Wii U has seen a number of its exclusive games turned into multi-platform releases in response to the console's lacklustre sales. The product sheet also contains new details of Sonic Boom, an upcoming 3D-animated TV series due to launch this autumn.Sega declined to comment on the report when contacted by Eurogamer this morning.

UPDATE 03/2 3PM: Microsoft's Xbox chief of staff, Aaron Greenberg, has denied... something. On Twitter he was asked if the $399 Xbox One rumour was true, to which he replied (spotted by Engadget), "No, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet."But what exactly was he denying - the entire rumour? Was he denying there would be no new, cheaper Xbox One released this year? Or was he specifically ruling out a $399 price point? Nowhere else in his Twitter feed does he expand on his answer. With Microsoft staying tight lipped as a company, his answer is worth acknowledging, but it may not be be the out-and-out denial it at first seems.

Microsoft has no plans to build an Xbox One sans Blu-ray disc for $100 less than the current model, according to a tweet by Xbox chief Aaron Greenberg. Rumors about a cheaper, all-digital version with a 1TB drive floated up recently from the NeoGAF forums, with speculation that it might hit retail by October of this year. When asked to confirm over Twitter, Greenberg replied "No, you cannot believe everything you read on the internet." We're not sure if he's shooting down the entire idea of the model or just the time frame, but sources suggest that Redmond was at least testing such a version. Considering how excited folks were about a possible retail version of the white, employee-only Xbox One, we're not expecting the rumors to die down anytime soon.

Microsoft will soon share its plans for Games With Gold on Xbox One.
The service – seen as a direct answer to Sony’s excellent Instant Games Collection on PSN – rewards Xbox Live subscribers with access to a changing selection of free titles.
So far it has only been available on Xbox 360. However, an Xbox One version was confirmed back in November.
Now Microsoft Game Studios corporate VP Phil Spencerhas said that details about this “will be coming fairly soon”.
Microsoft will have it work cut out to rival Sony’s offering, which has so far offered Resogun, Contrast and more recently Don’t Starve as PS4 freebies.
Vita owners are currently being offered free copies of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush, Guacamelee, Dynasty Warriors Next and Modnation Racers while PS3 owners can grab Metro: Last Light, BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, LittleBigPlanet Karting, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and the single player portion of Uncharted 3.
Games With Gold currently offers Dead Island. This will be replaced by Toy Soldiers: Cold War on February 16th.

The head of Konami Europe says the next Pro Evolution Soccer is ‘totally changed’.
It’s not been revealed officially, but PES 2015 is set to hit next-gen platforms this year. It is powered by the publisher’s new Fox Engine and is being co-developed by a new UK studio for the first time.
“I can’t say certain things about PES 2015, but we are ready to make a comeback,” said Euro boss Shinji Hirano. “I cannot give details on exactly what we are doing with the UK studio, but they are working on the next project and looking at the needs of the European people. It’s about globalising the franchise, so it is not just being developed by Japanese people.
“We know what’s been going wrong with PES, we are working on that. The next version is totally changed. 2014 is a transitional year for the franchise, so expect big things.”

The South Korean government is reportedly using Microsoft's Kinect motion-based game controller to monitor the heavily guarded DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) that separates the country from North Korea. The brainchild of freelance South Korean developer Jae Kwan Ko, the system is reportedly capable of differentiating between people and animals. (Hat tip to Kotaku, which originally ferreted out the story from South Korean publication Hankooki .) That makes it superior to the infrared systems already in use along the DMZ, which have a harder time determining whether a moving object is human. The Kinect-based system can send alerts of suspicious activity to the nearest military outpost. While the South Korean government reportedly installed the hardware at select portions of the DMZ last year, news about it is only emerging now—and details are relatively scarce, considering how this is a military project. Despite that secrecy, the South Korean government is playing up Jae Kwan Ko's contributions, highlighting him in the local media as an example of innovation and creative drive. Largely self-taught, he makes money by building apps for various mobile platforms—most of which, presumably, have nothing to do with detecting military threats."

The Xbox One Take Control contest asked fans to design fresh, new Xbox One controllers, with a grand prize of $1,000 – and here are the winners. Michael, the grand prize winner, received $1,000, five Xbox One wireless controllers and the opportunity for Microsoft to evaluate his design for physical production. The People's Choice winner received $750, and the nine First Prize winners won $500 each. The Best Use of Fresh Paint winner received a $150 gift certificate to CanvasPop.com and a Sensu digital Artist Brush & Stylus valued at $40.
Microsoft's panel, which included spokesman Major Nelson, evaluated submissions based on the following scale: 40 percent asked if the design was original and creative; 30 percent questioned if it would appeal to other gamers, and another 30 percent asked if the design felt "premium" and reinforced the Xbox One brand. Any of the submissions may be evaluated for public production, according to the contest's official rules.

Microsoft's Major Nelson has announced next month's lineup of free games for Xbox Live Gold members, revealing that subscribers can expect to receive free copies of Toy Soldiers: Cold War and Dead Island in February.
Signal Studios' Xbox Live Arcade strategy game Toy Soldiers: Cold War includes a series of tower defense-styled battles featuring miniature foot soldiers and combat vehicles. Dead Island, a 2011 retail release from Techland, is a first-person action game that challenges players to survive a zombie invasion at an island resort, with help from friends via online cooperative play.
As with previous Games With Gold program releases, both Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War are free for users to keep once they are downloaded, even after associated Xbox Live Gold memberships expire. New games are added to the service on the 1st and 16th of each month.

Spinal, the first downloadable addition to the Killer Instinct roster has arrived, lending the anemic fighting game a bit more depth - or at least a few more bones to break.
While the Xbox One Killer Instinct is extremely light on backstory, the first twoKiller Instinct games claim that Spinal is the reanimated skeleton of a long-dead warrior. Ultratech, the firm responsible for funding the Killer Instincttournaments, revived the skeletonic fighter to serve as something of an undead goon, wreaking havoc in the tournament and ensuring that Ultratech's wishes were carried out. According to Xbox Wire, this new design for the character draws inspiration from classic Harryhausen adventure film Jason and the Argonauts, which is fitting given that the ending of the original Killer Instinctclaimed that Spinal eventually left the world of combat sports in favor of a career as an Oscar-nominated actor.
Those who purchased the Killer Instinct Ultra Edition bundle or Combo Breaker Pack are now able to download Spinal at no additional charge. Everyone else will need to pony up $5 for the calcified revenant.
