Microsoft discontinued its subsidized $99 Xbox 360 with Kinect bundle in July 2013, the console manufacturer confirmed with the Wall Street Journal. The low-cost console was introduced in May 2012 and required a two-year Xbox Live commitment of buyers at a rate of $14.99 per month. The bundle worked out to be roughly $60 more than the closest option, a $299 4GB Xbox 360 console paired with two years of Xbox Live Gold as separate purchases.
"This program was intended to be a pilot experiment from the start, and Microsoft routinely adjusts the mix of offers available to its customers and this change was simply standard business practice," Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said. He added that the subsidized Xbox 360 option was for "squeezing the last 10 to 15 percent out of the potential market."

MIcrosoft has issued an update for its Xbox One Skype application, adding a new filtering feature and expanding chat logging functionality, among other user-requested improvements.
Post-update, Skype on Xbox One now logs the last 1,000 messages received, whereas the previous version only recorded the last seven days' worth of content. The Xbox One's Skype app also now filters player friend lists by online status, giving priority to active users.
Other additions include a tutorial for first-time users, a new set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier-themed emoticons, and an array of bugfixes. The update is available for free via Xbox Live starting today.

Raymond Cox - or Stallion83 as he's known on Xbox Live, Twitter and Twitch - has reached a level of gamer previously thought unobtainable. We've seen gamers, even Super Gamers. Cox showed us back in August 2011 what it looked like when a Super Gamer ascended past a Super Gamer - or, you could just call it a Super Gamer 2. But this ... this is to go even . This is one million Gamerscore.
Cox hit the one million mark at approximately 2:35 a.m. EST, March 13, 2014, after completing a game of Titanfall. His score has to be verified with Guinness to be recorded as the official highest Gamerscore, but considering Coxbroadcast his ... uh, achievement to the world on Twitch, it's unlikely there's any sort of shadiness going on here. Congrats, Raymond!

Speaking to Joystiq, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima said that around the timeGrand Theft Auto 3 was released, he and his team tried to create "something similar" to its open-world design. Kojima didn't note to what extent that something similar was worked on, nor which project it was for, but he did say it wasn't up to the standard of Rockstar's crime sim.
The Japanese veteran designer presented GTA creators the Houser brothers with lifetime achievement awards at last night's BAFTA ceremony in London. Kojima has previously spoken about being influenced by the vastness of GTA 3, telling EGM back in 2012 the game "definitely opened his eyes." After the awards show, we asked him if the GTA games had inspired the open-world design of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.
"When GTA 3 came out, we were on Metal Gear Solid 2," Kojima said, speaking through a translator. "At that point we tried to create something similar and we were completely unable to come up with this design to [a level of] similar success. Actually, around then I had with dinner with Dan Houser who I just saw [tonight] for the first time after ten years. To be honest, looking at their [Rockstar's] success at doing what we tried to do and failed, we went back and made the game engine [and] we first tried to ensure the freedom the player would have. So more than being inspired by them, to be honest they just went ahead of us, they were more successful than what we were trying to create back then.
"Now, game-wise what we are trying to create [in Ground Zeroes] is something probably different than they are trying to create. We're trying to ensure the freedom so the player can do some more realistic stealth infiltration by having all this freedom. So I believe we're creating different games."
Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is the first game in the stealth series to feature an open world, and Big Bosses worldwide get to explore it in a few days' time. The game hits North America on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PS3 on March 18, and then Europe on March 20.

More than fantasy tropes, gloomy yet attractive graphics or an overarching sense of despair, the hallmark of Dark Souls 2 is repeated, oft-frustrating character death, so it just makes sense to have a website keeping track of all of this suffering.
Officially dubbed the "Dark Souls 2 Player's Site," the webpage is less a celebration of player triumphs and more a monument to their endless willingness to throw themselves against the same foes that killed them moments before. As of now, two days after Dark Souls 2 made its retail debut, the Xbox 360 side of the site claims 1,311,973 total deaths, while the PlayStation 3 side reports 2,991,976.
While these numbers are probably not entirely accurate - it seems unlikely that 1,657 Xbox 360 players have finished the game while a mere three PlayStation 3 owners have done the same - the site's functionality should improve as the game's post-launch hiccups subside. In the meantime, try to figure out what the rest of the site means. Those scales are self-explanatory, but the red and white candles remain a waxy enigma.

PlayStation was the only console brand to increase its video games sales last year.
According to ERA based on GfK Chart-Track data, the number of PS4, PS3, PS2, Vita, PSP games sold last year was 11.4m, an increase of 1.8 per cent over 2012. These games combined generated £372m, a rise of 15.2 per cent. The larger jump in revenue is due to launch of PS4 and its more expensive software.
But Xbox was resilient and remained comfortably the biggest console brand last year, with 14.4m games sold. That’s a slight drop of 6.5 per cent year-on-year. Xbox games generated £458m, an even smaller decline of 2.1 per cent.
But it was a bad year for Nintendo. The number of Wii, DS, Wii U and 3DS games sold last year fell to 6m, a 35.5 per cent drop over 2012’s 9.3m. In total these games made £142m, a fall of 27.6 per cent year-on-year.

March 12th, 2014, 22:52 Posted By: wraggster
Just as the Xbox One's biggest game release arrives, network problems are keeping many owners from signing in. The Xbox Support Twitter account reportedan issue around 5PM ET, and according to the service's dashboard it's still ongoing. While many players who already setup their consoles and logged in to the game (including some of our editors) are able to connect and play Titanfall -- the game's cloud seems to be holding up, even if Xbox Live isn't in general -- others are unable to sign in, particularly brand-new Xbox One purchasers who can't get much of anything going. The support team's message has been promising updates every 30 minutes or so, but so far there's no ETA on a fix. Steam appears to have just come back online after downtime of its own -- perhaps we could suggest some Dark Souls II on PC in the meantime?
Update: As of 10:47PM ET the Xbox Status page and Support Twitter report the problem is resolved. The team recommends a full power cycle (hold down the Xbox button on the system itself for five seconds to turn it all the way off, then turn it back on), and then you should be ready to request your Titan, pilot.

Microsoft has acknowledged 'issues' with the Xbox One's headset adapter, following numerous complaints regarding voice chat functionality on older headsets.
Complaints have flooded in via the official Xbox forums and other websites over apparent compatibility issues with the newly-released Xbox One headset adapter and several makes and models of headset, including Turtle Beach and Astro.
According to user reports, while in-game audio and even Skype calls work fine, the voice of the affected user is distorted in party chat.
In a statement to Game Informer a Microsoft rep said the firm is 'investigating' the "intermittent issues".
"We've heard about a small number of users experiencing intermittent issues," said a Microsoft rep. "We're actively investigating and are working on a resolution."
The $24.99 adapter was released this month to allow Xbox One players to use Xbox 360 headsets with the new machine, which is not natively backwards compatible with older devices.
As well as a system update, users are also required to instal an update for the controller itself using the included USB cable.

It looks like open world crime game Mafia 3 is set in Louisiana.AllGamesBeta published an image of a casting call for an untitled video game in production by Take-Two, the parent company of Mafia publisher 2K Games. It called for actors to be used for voice over, motion capture and facial scans, and mentioned three characters - all born in Louisiana.Characters mentioned were Franklin, Tony and Mickey. Franklin is in his early 20s and "knows how to get a job done at any cost". Tony is in his early 30s and is described as "a genius with numbers and statistics who runs sports betting operations". Tony is "not your typical gangster," the description continues. And Mickey is in his late teens, a young street hustler who "likes to run his mouth". "Mickey has a bad habit of taking credit for bigger jobs and making himself seem higher up in the criminal ladder than he really is. When confronted with this, he reverts back to the scared teenager he really is."While there is no specific mention of it, if Mafia 3 is set in Louisiana, the game may feature an open world New Orleans.Mafia 3 was thought to have been in development for some time at 2K Czech, where the previous games were made. But recent troubles at the studio suggest 2K has rebooted development. In January, 2K said it had "relocated and consolidated" its 2K Czech team at Prague to Brno, and had transferred "some development resources" from Prague and Brno to 2K's California studio in Novato. This resulted in lay offs at 2K Czech. The current thinking is that Mafia 3 is in production at 2K's California studio. Rod Fergusson, who had joined 2K following a stint helping Irrational finish BioShock Infinite, might have been working on the game - but he isn't now. He joined Microsoft to work on the new Gears of War game at Black Tusk. The casting call was published on 6th March, suggesting it may be some time before we see the new, next-generation Mafia 3. 2K Games declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer.

March 12th, 2014, 21:42 Posted By: wraggster
Feargus Urquhart, the leader of Obsidian Entertainment, was playing through that alien probing scene in his studio's game, South Park: The Stick of Truth, the evening before a meeting with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The next morning he'd have to go and talk to them about censoring it.Urquhart was at the top of his house. His children weren't allowed up but his wife was, and up she came, watching in silence as the scene unfolded."That's atrocious!" she declared when Urquhart timidly turned for her verdict. "I'd never ever heard her use that word before," he tells me."I know," he replied"What is that?" she asked."It's..." and he pauses, remembering his embarassment, "the game.""Uh."He had to tell Parker and Stone."I've got to tell you guys," he said when they sat down the next morning, "my wife was watching me last night play this and the word she used was 'atrocious'."Their response was unanimous."Yeah!"That's what South Park does, that's what Parker and Stone do - cross the line. Urquhart's wife's exclamation was exactly the validation they crave.Imagine being Obsidian reading po-faced reports from game certification departments at Sony, Microsoft, ESRB and PEGI. "In hour X, minute X, a minor is subjected to non-consensual... You know what I mean?" Urquhart giggles, talking to me on Skype."This is our video game! Look at what daddy made!"Censorship came nonetheless, the European PS3 and 360 versions masking seven controversial scenes, each around 20 seconds in length. No strangers to censorship, Parker and Stone - to their credit - wrote humorous screens to mask the content, but it was still odd, still jarring and still Ubisoft's decision to do it."I'll be honest," Urquhart says, "for me that scene is funny as hell. But then it's hard for me to judge other people and whether they feel it should be in a game or not. That's really hard for me."How did Parker and Stone take it?"That's where we don't... have that conversation!" he snorts in amusement. "That's one of the few times we get to say 'we're just the developer'."That's a Ubisoft-South Park conversation."Obsidian was simply told to do it. "This is what we need to do, here are the things you need to do, South Park will get you the things that you need and there we go."I imagine him shrugging. "Internally it was not a big conversation. You have to put it into perspective; we're trying to get this game done. The worst thing for us is if that conversation had taken two months, because we would be sitting with a part of the game waiting to be figured out, which is just scary as hell for us."But Urquhart would have stuck his neck out had things gone too far."At some point if the censorship had gone to even more of an extreme, and particularly if there wasn't a PC version, then I would have gotten more involved, as to say 'this is getting ridiculous'."

Respawn's community manager Abbie Heppe has empathised with gamers who frown on on-disc DLC.
Heppe also confirmed that it’s not a strategy that the Respawn team has utilised.
"I totally get that," Heppe told OXM when asked if she understood why on-disc DLC is a “thorny issue”.
Added Heppe: “Nobody wants to have a disc and then have something that's unlocked on the disc and be like 'why are you charging me for something that you shipped with the game?'
“We don't touch that; that is scary community territory.”
Three DLC packs have been confirmed for Titanfall, all of which are available through the game’s £19.99 Season Pass should gamers chose to invest.
"We're also going to do free updates, private matches and stuff we're going to be adding in for users and not charging for,” she added. “I understand why I probably should have an answer for that, but we're still trying to figure out that sort of stuff internally and some of that stuff comes from feedback from the community and what people want from launch."
Titanfall arrives on Xbox One and PC this Friday (March 14th) in the UK.

Two Reddit users posted separate photos of a Watch Dogs closed beta listed on the Xbox One Games Store yesterday, suggesting Ubisoft might be giving players an early hack at the game. The listing's not on the storefront currently, so if it was there, it's been swiftly baleeted. We've reached out to Ubisoft for comment.
As MP1st suggests, this could well be an internal beta that accidentally went external: Even if the photos are accurate, Ubisoft hasn't made any announcements about an impending beta, and the game is due to hit Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on May 27. That said, it wouldn't be the first super-close-to-launch beta of the year.
Although Ubisoft Montral has been cultivating Watch Dogs for half a decade, the studio took the risk of delaying the game last year; it was originally due as a PS4 and Xbox One launch title. In our recent preview, Xav de Matos said, "Watch Dogs is an unbelievably slick world with unique elements and if its distractions can fit seamlessly into the narrative without feeling shoehorned in for the sake of 'another thing to do,' it may have been a risk worth taking."

A stealthy technological tug-of-war sounds nice and all but how are you supposed to get anything done in Watch Dogs when your friends are constantly dropping by to jack your bank account? Don't worry: The multiplayer action can be turned off any time.
"All the online activities are just part of the menu," said Danny Belanger, Watch Dogs' game designer, during a Friday event on Twitch, as reported by Polygon. "They're a choice. But if someone is not into that... they can totally turn it off."
Ubisoft takes a distinctly Dark Souls-style approach to multiplayer in Watch Dogs. While you're playing as Aiden Pearce, doling out vigilante justice on the streets of Chicago, another player can sneak into the game. It's your job to hunt the intruder down in the anonymous masses and hack their phone before they do they same to you.
Watch Dogs is already layered with distractions. During a recent preview event, Joystiq found that the sheer number of side missions and mini-games in the anticipated PlayStation 4 and Xbox One title obscured the drama in the main storyline. Maintaing that "vigilante obsessed with atonement" atmosphere is hard when you're always pausing to collect golden coins. If real people were constantly dropping into your game it would be even harder, so it's smart of Ubisoft to make these multiplayer components optional for players of varying tastes.

March 10th, 2014, 21:41 Posted By: wraggster
Publisher: EA Developer: Respawn Entertainment Format: Xbox One, 360, PC Release: March 14 Version tested: PC
The following represents our first impressions of Titanfall based on two days’ play at an EA-run event in London last week. Although we were able to play the final version in its entirety, our full review is being withheld until we are able to test the game in real-world circumstances. Please note, then, that the following reflects a view of the game based on play in optimal conditions. How well Xbox Live and Origin will perform on launch is currently unknown, and will have a crucial impact on Titanfall’s viability as a multiplayer-only game. Titanfall is the first substantial revision that the Call of Duty multiplayer formula has undergone since it became the dominant form of entertainment on the last generation of consoles. In securing it as a console exclusive, Microsoft are gambling on the notion that what the majority of players want is a next-gen iteration of an experience they’ve already had. At the most basic level, that’s what Titanfall offers. You rush across medium-sized urban maps to rack up kills with satisfying-feeling, semi-realistic weapons; you run up killstreaks and claim rewards; you level up and unlock weapons, attachments, and upgrades. In rethinking the formula, however, Respawn have given it new life. It’s easy to turn your nose up at Titanfall’s populist provenance, but to do so is to do disservice to an intelligent, modern and exciting game. Each player is a ‘pilot’, a special class of combatant fighting across a battlefield that also includes non-player minions. The weapons you equip will be variously effective at killing other players, clearing out hordes of grunts, keeping you concealed, or winning fights at short and long range – considerations that you’re required to make based on your team’s overall battle plan. Kills of any kind chip seconds off your ‘Titanfall’ timer. When this crucial clock hits zero, you’re able to summon your titan from orbit – a pilotable, customisable mech that arrives straight out of another game entirely.
