The launch of Battlefield 4 on consoles new and old was marred by technical difficulties.Rather than being EA's aggressive declaration of intent on Call of Duty's shooter genre for the coming PS4 and Xbox One years ahead, Battlefield 4 became an embarrassing exercise in blushing patch fixes.Only stands to reason, then, that people are worried the same may happen with blockbuster multiplayer shooter Titanfall. It was a concern EA management attempted to answer in last night's quarterly earnings call."The challenges that we've faced with Battlefield 4 were different from anything that we've seen before"
Patrick Söderlund
"When Battlefield 4 launched it was a very complex game," began EA Games boss Patrick Söderlund (transcript on Seeking Alpha), "launching on two entirely new console platforms as well as current-gen and PC."We were pushing innovation heavily and delivering 60fps gameplay for 64 players plus the ability to connect via mobile tablet as a commander into the product, coupled with some very innovative features in the gameplay side."Based on our pre-launch testing, our beta performance, we were confident the game was ready when it was launched. Shortly after launch, however, we began hearing about problems from our player community, and the development team quickly began to address the situation."Now, thanks to architecture that allowed rapid adjustments and updates, "game stability has significantly increased"."How are we learning from this?" he said. "The challenges that we've faced with Battlefield 4 were different from anything that we've seen before with other games. There were different issues that only manifest [their] scale in the post-launch live environment."There were different issues that only manifest [their] scale in the post-launch live environment"
Söderlund
"We're taking multiple steps to evaluate what occurred and incorporate those learnings into our development process for future products, so we don't experience the same problems again."I would close," and he did, "on the fact that Battlefield 4 remains an amazing game with massive innovation, and we're confident that gamers will be logging-on to play for a long time to come."Andrew Wilson, EA head honcho, said his company was seeing "great results" in the current Titanfall testing phases, and he was confident in the "world class" teams at developer Respawn and exclusive partner Microsoft. Titanfall PC and Xbox One betas are expected in February, from Valentine's Day onwards.Peter Moore, EA second in command, also had something to say, albeit on the topic of Battlefield 4 and Titanfall not cannibalising each other's sales this coming year. "They can both coexist very easily," he assured listeners, "and they will be both incremental and accretive to what we're going to be doing in financial year '15 [April onwards]."Titanfall will be released for PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on 14th March.

Microsoft looking at bringing service to other devices
[h=3]Microsoft[/h]microsoft.com
Microsoft has revealed that its exercise programme for the Xbox One, Xbox Fitness, has been used for almost 1.5 million workouts since the console launched in November.
"The key reason for getting Fitness out day one on the Xbox One launch was really to do something different in that space," Dave McCarthy, GM for Lifestyle Entertainment at Microsoft Studios, told Polygon.
"We learned a lot from our forays into this space and our competitors. Our strategy is to take entertainment you love and make it better. We thought we'd make a mark on day one, even with an early adopter audience. The early numbers bear that out."
McCarthy also spoke about the possibilities for the programme on other Microsoft devices, and confirmed they were looking at phones, tablets and PCs.
Microsoft signed up a number of high profile trainers to create programmes for the Kinect-powered service, including Jillian Michaels, Tracy Anderson, Tony Horton of P90X and Shaun T of Insanity. Over 43.3 million Fit Points were earned in Xbox Fitness within 24 hours of the Xbox One going on sale.

Microsoft has announced its online file storage platform SkyDrive is being re-branded to OneDrive. The new name is largely the product of a dispute, which Microsoft lost, over the "Sky" name with British broadcasting company BSkyB – the outfit behind Britain's premium Sky channels.
"We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future," the Microsoft announcementreads. The post goes on to say existing users should find no breaks in service as Microsoft slaps the new name all over the old digs. If for some reason you absolutely must know the second OneDrive is live, you can sign up to be notified through email at the official site.
SkyDrive is not only Microsoft's online file-hosting service, it also integrates with Xbox One to allow users to record clips of gameplay, edit them through Upload Studio, then publish and share them online. The change in moniker does not affect this functionality, which is still currently available to all Xbox One owners – granted they have an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

The Elder Scrolls Online will not require a PlayStation Plus membership to play on PS4, ZeniMax Online Studios Game Director Matt Firor wrote in a PlayStation Blog update. Bethesda confirmed to Joystiq that the subscription-based MMORPG will require an Xbox Live Gold membership to play on Xbox One, however.
Bethesda was in talks with Microsoft to allow Xbox One owners to play the game online without the Live subscription in August. That was after Firor revealed the developer's decision to go with a monthly subscription for the game instead of moving to a free-to-play format. The Elder Scrolls Online will cost players $14.99 per month when it launches April 4 for PC and Mac with next-gen console versions following in June. The game was recently handed aMature rating by the ESRB, to which Bethesda said it is "unwilling to change the game's content to achieve a different rating."

In addition to the launch of Call of Duty: Ghosts' latest Onslaught DLC, Infinity Ward brought forth a patch for the game. While the DLC is currently only available for Xbox One and Xbox 360 players, the title update applies to all platforms, hitting Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC today before coming to PS3 and PS4 owners tomorrow.
The update adds eSports rules to the Clan vs. Clan playlist as well as a Hunted FFA and Gun Game playlists, the latter replacing Heavy Duty, which was just added in December. Infinity Ward's patch also adds a social feed to look at when you're not shooting people and some new menu music to listen to when you're not thinking about death and destruction. The Extinction game mode also earns five new Prestige ranks in the update.
Platform-specific changes are a bit more sparse, as PS4 players can enjoy a more optimized remote play experience on Vita. Additionally, Xbox One owners should have fewer issues using the Kinect's voice recognition options, and players on both Xbox platforms should now have no functionality issues when a split-screen guest signs out. The full list of changes in the game's update can be found on Infinity Ward's forums.

January 27th, 2014, 22:49 Posted By: wraggster
News from gaming insider Pete Doss is that Microsoft is mulling significant changes to the restrictions it places on developers regarding the Xbox One's GPU. Reportedly, some 10% of total GPU horsepower is reserved for the Kinect — 8% for video and 2% for voice processing. Microsoft is apparently planning changes that would free up that 8% video entirely, leaving just 2% of the system's GPU dedicated to voice input. If Microsoft makes this change, it could have a significant uplift on system frame rates — and it's not clear that developers would necessarily need to patch the architecture to take advantage of the difference."

Crackdown 3 could be revealed for Xbox One today.
The developer of Crackdown 2 (and co-developer of Kinect Star Wars, Nike+ Kinect and Kinect Sesame Street Season 2) Ruffian Games this morning tweeted that it “feels like a good day for announcements doesn’t it?”.
That’s not all, though. Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer yesterday tweeted that he was “looking forward to a games announce coming early in the morning” and Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb added shortly after that he’s “got a busy morning coming up tomorrow”.
A new Crackdown for Xbox One was teased back in E3 last year although there have been no concrete details since.

Microsoft has suggested that the price of digital Xbox One games will become more competitive with the High Street at some point in the future.
Whereas Sony has used a combination of Steam-like sales and free games on PlayStation Plus to make its consoles viable digital platforms, Xbox Live’s digital games pricing still often compares poorly with the High Street.
However, in a Reddit thread reacting angrily to the news that digital pre-orders for Titanfall would not enjoy the same $10 discount being offered to those who pre-order the physical game in the US, Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb replied:
“Deals like the $10 off one are driven by retailers. We are way aware of this and many of the concerns of the community - we have some great stuff planned for Xbox One this year (and beyond.) As soon as we can share some of the goodness... we will.”
When then asked specifically about competitive digital pricing, he added that the issue “is indeed on the agenda”.

January 27th, 2014, 22:38 Posted By: wraggster
The differences in framerates and resolutions between multiplatform games on PS4 and Xbox One are “way overblown” according to one senior Microsoft exec.
The claim comes following the confirmation that while Square Enix’s Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition runs at 1080p and 60fps on PS4 but manages 1080p and between 30-45fps on Xbox One.
“There is a resolution thing going on and okay, there's a lot of reasons why that could be true, but we're weeks in. We just shipped, it's a long generation,” senior director of product management Albert Penello told Gamertag Radio, as reported by Joystiq.
"I believe that the difference in the [PS4 and Xbox One] is not that great and I know what's going on behind the scenes and I probably have access to more information about some of this thing than a lot of people. Sometimes I think people tend to neglect the points that are in my favour and they like to highlight the points that tell me that I am wrong.
"I think these little things get way overblown versus like the quality of the games and the real differences in the two experiences which are pretty minor."
In a separate statement sent to Videogamer a Square Enix rep also downplayed any potential differences between the two versions, adding: "Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience.
“Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy."
Tomb Raider becomes the latest in an increasingly long list of titles to enjoy a resolution and/or performance boost on Sony’s machine such as Assassin’s Creed IV, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and Thief.
However, it should also be noted that while Xbox One hasn’t yet been host to a multiplatform game that outperforms the PS4 version it does achieve parity on a number of titles such as FIFA 14, Need for Speed: Rivals, UFC and Skylanders Swap Force.

A Titanfall beta would appear imminent as Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella teases an announcement "soon".
All eyes are on the studio to confirm a public beta for the anticipated Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC shooter, following a recent closed 'alpha' test.
Speaking via Twitter on Monday, Zampella said, "Yes, we will have an announcement soon. I'm sure no one can guess what it will be..."
According to an alleged French retailer leak, the developer will host a week-long beta for Titanfall in mid-February.
The developer insisted that last week's multiplayer testing was not a betabut "a limited technical test". It was unwilling to discuss the possibility of a public beta at the time.
"It is not a beta, and we don't have any beta news at the moment," said the firm.
The Titanfall release date is March 11, according to EA's schedule. The highly anticipated Respawn shooter is generally considered as a key asset for Microsoft and its Xbox business. It will ship on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

No new Gears of War games to be made by series creator Epic Games, it seems, as Microsoft Studios acquires all rights to the franchise and puts new Canadian studio Black Tusk in charge.Epic Games will "concentrate its efforts on new projects", founder Tim Sweeney said in a statement published on Xbox.com. Epic Games PR Wes Phillips said on Twitter that the company had "multiple games in development" (via Kotaku).More news about Gears of War and the game Black Tusk is making will be shared later in the year.Microsoft also announced that Gears of War veteran Rod Fergusson had been hired to oversee development of the franchise. He was former director of production at Epic Games before leaving to help BioShock Infinite get out of the door. He said his new job "really feels like a homecoming".Epic Games said it had licensed Unreal Engine 4 to Microsoft for use on future projects - like this one, presumably - too.

Battlefield’s singleplayer is fine, but the game truly comes alive with 64 players on a multiplayer map.
From the satisfaction of a long-distance headshot to the unstoppable power of a well-placed anti-tank rocket, there’s a thrill to playing Battlefield 4 alone. But only multiplayer can inspire the sense that you’re playing a part in some bullet-ridden orchestra, moving across its maps with teammates in perfect harmony. There’s a swaying rhythm as the focus shifts to different checkpoints while gunfire’s melody builds toward a deafening crescendo – a jet screaming overhead. The moments where teams form a dialogue and begin communicating to take the upper hand are more powerful than any scripted event. You don’t notice you’re part of these instances until you’re in the middle of one, and committed to the fact. There’s a sense of scale here unlike any other – I’ve never felt more in awe of war than during a heated conflict in the crossroad intersection of Dawnbreaker, watching a multitude of jeeps and tanks hunker down at each side of the bridge while helicopters swooped in to deliver new players to the battlefield. There’s usually an abrupt end to battles like this; when the focus of the skirmish shifts elsewhere, players use focal havoc points as the perfect distractions to sneak off and capture unguarded conquest spots. This goes on for what seems like forever. What’s really impressive is how choreographed it often feels, though it’s entirely spontaneous. The fact that battles can turn into theatre this dramatic is a wonder considering there are so many individual minds whirring independently in each lobby. In Rogue Transmission, a desperate final push to overrun the satellite dish resembles a set piece from a Ford-Coppola movie, a mass of human soldiers cascading towards their target. A multi-helicopter assault on the main building in Hainan Resort results in major casualties, but we managed to take the base. It was worth the sacrifice.

Microsoft soared to record revenues in the last quarter, confounding Wall Street forecasts on the back of strong demand for Xbox consoles, Surface tablets and Internet cloud services. The U.S.-based technology titan reported net income of $6.56 billion on revenue that hit a record high of $24.52 billion in the quarter that ended December 31. ... Sales of Surface tablets more than doubled from the previous quarter to hit $893 million, and Microsoft sold 7.4 million Xbox videogame consoles, with 3.9 million of those being new-generation Xbox One. Bing's share of the Internet search market grew to 18.2 percent while its share of the online search ad market grew about a third, according to Microsoft. Meanwhile, money made from selling Windows software to computer makers slid by three percent due to continue soft demand by consumers for personal computers, according to Microsoft.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 is bringing direct YouTube uploading to the series, meaning players should be able to get thumbs up for their thumb-twiddling skills in no time. As revealed on Capcom Unity, the fighter re-release lets players select any match from their online log to upload in either low or high quality. It's unclear how this applies to Super Street Fighter 4, which USF4 can be bought as an add-on for - we've reached out to Capcom to clear that up.
Video uploading is great and all, but we're still waiting for the download on the mystery fifth new fighter, a woman who apparently featured in a Street Fighter comic. Whoever she is - and she's clearly Persona 4's Chie because damn the clues that'd be awesome - she'll join fellow newbies Rolento, Poison, Hugo, Elena when USF4 arrives in the summer for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has gone digging in the not-so-ancient ruins of next-gen gaming consoles and come back with a shiny debate over framerate differences. While the PlayStation 4 version of the game has been confirmed to run at 60 frames per second, the Xbox One version's framerate is, as of writing, unconfirmed.
A Square Enix rep weighed in on the issue to VideoGamer.com, stating that, "Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy."
Microsoft Senior Director of Product Management Albert Penello told Gamertag Radio that the differences between the two versions were minor, and defended the Xbox One version by reminding listeners that we've only just begun the new generation of consoles. "Everybody wants to focus on, you know, there's a framerate thing going on in Tomb Raider, there is a resolution thing going on and okay, there's a lot of reasons why that could be true, but we're weeks in. We just shipped, it's a long generation."

The company's search for a new CEO is still the dominant narrative surrounding Microsoft. But if you're able to get past the quest to replace Ballmer, you'll find a company that's starting to get something of a second wind in its long life. For one, its new Xbox One console is selling quite well. After getting off to a slightly rocky start and trailing the latest PlayStation in initial sales, it outsold its rival in the US for the Month of December. All told during the last quarter Redmond pushed 3.9 million of the next-gen (now-gen?) gaming box out to retail channels. That's in addition to 3.5 million Xbox 360s, which are still going quite strong and quite a bargain compared to the newest systems.
Another unit that struggled early on, Surface, seems to be righting the ship as well. (Though, its rough patch lasted quite a bit longer than the Xbox One's.) Revenues from Surface sales more than doubled from $400 million last quarter to $893 million. And let's not forget, that $400 million dollars represented a 47 percent increase over the quarter before that.
Obviously, things are not all rosy. Its desktop consumer Office and Windows 8offerings continue to see revenues fall. But, the growth of its device division and increased income from Bing (which stunningly now accounts for 18.2 percent of searches in the US, according to Microsoft) are beginning to compensate for the "softness in the consumer PC market."

Through a joint collaboration with Wikia, Warner Bros. will offer a custom companion app for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.
The app is a dedicated hub for all of Wikia's community-curated Shadow of Mordor content, including player-written guides to help with certain missions and background info on characters. While in the app's "reader" mode, users can peruse a wealth of information about the game and the lore surrounding it.
More interesting, however, is a secondary sync mode within Palantir. Once initiated, sync mode constantly listens to the game audio coming off your display and automatically retrieves relevant information surrounding protagonist Talion's current going-ons. Information runs the gamut from character biographies to mission walkthroughs and more.
An initial version of the app will be available later this month, with limited sync capabilities – not that it's useful unless you're watching a trailer for the game. Wikia and Warner Bros. will offer the app free of charge on iPad, though Wikia isn't opposed to offering Palantir on other platforms down the line.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, in development at Monolith Productions, launches this year on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.

January 23rd, 2014, 23:14 Posted By: wraggster
Publisher: Capcom Developer: TBC Format: PS3, PC, 360 Origin: Japan Release: June (360, PS3); August (PC)
Yoshinori Ono, Street Fighter IV’s grinning mascot producer, is off the project – as is, more worryingly, Dimps, the fighting-game specialist team set up by series creator Takashi Nishiyama to handle the development of each of iteration of Street Fighter IV to date. Capcom is unwilling to disclose the company working in its place, but whatever studio it is will benefit from a supremely balanced foundation on which to build this, the final update in Capcom’s flagship fighting series. Five new fighters – the fifth of whom is still yet to be revealed – bring the roster to 44 characters, the largest in the series’ history. Two new online modes, a handful of new stages and a host of re-rebalancing tweaks for the established cast aim to make this the perfectly balanced package, if such a thing were actually possible.Three fundamental changes provide the greatest threat to that balance. The Red Focus Attack is a new, more powerful move available to every character. It can absorb multiple hits, instead of the single attack of the standard Focus. The cost for the additional defensive capacity is two blocks of special meter, but when any Red Focus Attack causes an opponent to crumple to the floor, giving every character in the game a way of comboing into Ultra, it’s a price worth paying. Then there’s Delayed Wakeup, which lets you stay on the floor a little longer after a knockdown to put your opponent off their rhythm. It’s primarily designed to nerf characters like Cammy, Akuma and Ibuki who are at their most effective when an opponent is getting up off the ground, but making it a universal mechanic risks hurting those of the cast who need all the help they can get.
