For an almost two-year old game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare still possesses an uncanny amount of pluck. It's become a bellwether for judging modern first-person shooters, and still regularly places high in the Xbox Live activity charts. However, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling recently revealed the most convincing testimony of the game's success while accepting CoD 4's three BAFTA Awards in London earlier this week -- according to Bowling, the game's online multiplayer component has played host to just over 15 million players.
Bowling clarified that 11 million of said players joined CoD 4's ranks via Xbox Live, while over four million entered the fray on PSN. He didn't even mention how many PC gamers had gotten their war on, though we're sure that when combined with the console players, CoD 4's total online population would rival that of many average-sized countries

Now on the Xbox Live Marketplace worldwide and PlayStation Store only in Japan is a Chun-nan Adventure Pack for Sonic Unleashed. Four stages with Sonic racing through China and two Werehog levels are included in the 250 Microsoft Point ($3.12) expansion.
Excited? Then you will be happy to hear Sega is working on more DLC. The Japanese press release announcing the level pack says moving forward Sega will periodically distribute additional Sonic Unleashed downloadable content. Looks like the easy thing to do is release more remixed levels, but Sonic is a huge franchise. There is potential for Sega to make other characters already modeled for Sonic Unleashed playable, but looking at the direction of the Sonic series we’ll probably just get more levels.

Someone at sue-happy company PalTalk just got paid. Microsoft has settled with the company that filed suit against the Xbox 360 maker over patent infringement claims related to Halo multiplayer. Make it rain, PalTalk!
PalTalk hit Microsoft with a suit over a pair of patents in 2006, claiming that the multiplayer tech that powered some Xbox Live multiplayer games violated technology patents for "ways to control interactive applications over multiple computers," according to Bloomberg. Those patents were purchased from MPath Interactive Inc. by PalTalk for a sum of $200,000.

The accidental release of F.E.A.R. 2 DLC on Xbox Live Marketplace caused some confusion -- especially after it was suddenly pulled hours after release. The "Toy Soldiers" DLC was, according to Monolith Productions, meant to release in April and best of all, was always meant to be free on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.
As you can tell from the screenshots, the "Toy Soldiers" pack places players from a rather unique perspective. Shrunken down to miniature proporations, where players will duke it out in a pinball machine, hospital room, and playground.

Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown has been speaking to analysts over at Wedbush Morgan about the state of the industry. Like rival, Activision earlier this year, EA feels that hardware price cuts would benefit everybody.
One way he illustrates this is via some stats: "In the first half of calendar 08, there was rough parity between PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Second half of the year, (there's a) 40-plus percent sales advantage to Xbox versus PS3, potentially as a result of that price drop."
"The point here is that we've seen one major price drop thus far in this console cycle; we feel that we have a long ways to go, and a lot more of the unit sales will occur at the lower price points."
Concluded Brown: "History holds more [hardware] units translates, times tie ratio, to more software units and software dollars for third-party publishers. Those are the key takeaways in terms of where we see this console cycle at this point in time", he continued.

Epic will release the next Gears of War 2 map pack, the Snowblind pack, on March 31, it has been confirmed.
The pack will add four new maps to the game's thriving multiplayer mode, Grindyard, Under Hill, Courtyard, and Fuel Depot - the last of which is a remake of a favourite from the original.
A patch being released a week before that, on March 24, will change the game's current ranking system for an improved experience points-based system, allowing players to level their status up to level 100.
Drop-outs suffer an experience point penalty, and Epic will introduce an auto-balancing system to replace AWOL players with bots, to even games out on the fly.

Gears of War 2 did not have a smooth launch. But at least Epic has been working to answer some of the complaints. A third title update, the biggest to date according to Microsoft's official Gears 2 website, is set for release on March 24. It addresses continued concerns over the matchmaking system, adds a new point system, tosses in nine extra Achievements and puts the kibosh on some notable exploits.
The big news is that Gears 2 is adding a new player experience system, which gives points for all public matches. Capped at 100 levels, the experience system rewards players who reach the top with a special icon. Experience is equivalent across all modes, so no one is punished or rewarded for sticking to the game types they prefer. And yes, there will be an experience penalty for players who drop out before a match is complete. The update also adds a change to public matches, automatically adding bots into a public match if a player drops and the teams become unbalanced.
A few tweaks to matchmaking are also being made in the hopes of making the system work as quickly and efficiently as possible. This includes adding region preferences to matchmaking.
Numerous exploits are being closed off, so get your exploiting in while you can. These exploits include some cover slide glitches, Wingman scoring cheats (no more suicides to cheat the opponent out of points), the amazing ability to melee through walls and launching yourself in the air with smoke grenades while mantling (boooo). Balancing issues include reducing the stun duration from smoke grenades, increases the angle that triggers a chainsaw duel so players can't be easily side-swiped by chainsaws without a duel and reduces the delay before a player can climb up from low cover.
You can read the complete update list here.
Here's the complete list of new Achievements, worth 250 points:- "Rookie Gear" (10 points): Earn enough multiplayer experience to reach level 5 (Public matches only).
- Rookie
- "Seasoned Gear" (20 points): Earn enough multiplayer experience to reach level 15 (Public matches only).
- "Battle-Tested Gear" (30 points): Earn enough multiplayer experience to reach level 25 (Public matches only).
- "Battle-Hardened Gear" (50 points): Reach level 50 and play a match on each of the four Snowblind Map Pack maps (Public matches only).
- "Veteran Gear" (75 points): Reach level 100 and win a match on each of the four Snowblind Map Pack maps (Public matches only).
- "Never Eat Red Snow" (20 points): Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Snowblind Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty).
- "Icy Dead People" (25 points): Complete waves 1 through 50 on any Snowblind Map Pack map in Horde (any difficulty).
- "Frigid Body Dynamics" (5 points): Play a multiplayer match on each of the four Snowblind Map Pack maps (any mode).
- "The Weather Outside Is Lethal" (15 points): Win a multiplayer match on each of the four Snowblind Map Pack maps (any mode).

Unsurprisingly, Capcom's recently announced "Versus" DLC for Resident Evil 5 is raising quite a stink from players who are convinced they're being nickeled-and-dimed, paying for content that should have been included in the game in the first place. Capcom recently braved the slings and arrows of their incensed fanbase to defend the five-dollar update -- they claim that the price covers development of the new features which go "above and beyond the initial scope" of the game, as well as bandwidth costs associated with implementing additional online multiplayer offerings.
Capcom explained the "Versus" pack, which will bring four-player co-op and competitive online modes to the game within "a few weeks," isn't just an unlock patch for content already included on the RE5 disc -- despite the fact that it's composed entirely of assets from the core game. How about it, gang? Have you come down from your blinding, Majini-esque rage?

When Sega Japan said Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram 5.66 was in development for Xbox Live Arcade it didn’t sound like an only in Japan kind of thing. And it isn’t! Sega USA sent us an e-mail confirming it’s coming to North America this spring. April is spring, right? We’ll probably see Virtual On hit the Xbox 360 then since that’s when Japan gets it.
The mech fighting game is being updated with better graphics, online play, and voice chat. When you’re not dodging rockets online you can hone your skills in ten arcade mode levels and fourteen score attack stages. Sounds like a sweet deal for 1,200 Microsoft Points ($15). Now if there was just a way to plug the arcade sticks into an Xbox 360…

Last year, Electronic Arts introduced players to a world of mercenaries, co-operative gameplay and gold plated automatic weapons. Army of Two took players on a globetrotting adventure where you needed to use co-op strategy with your partner to survive various hotspots. As Salem and Rios, two ex-Army Rangers turned mercenaries, you battle through different warzones to uncover a conspiracy that could threaten America and the world. But there's no rest for these two soldiers, as today Electronic Arts announced the sequel to the co-op action game. Army of Two: The 40th Day reunites Salem and Rios as they're forced to survive in a city under siege.
The story of The 40th Day places Salem and Rios in the middle of Shanghai, China, as a disaster of epic proportions strikes the city. While they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, they are the right men to react to the chaos. As they fight their way through ruined districts of the city, they discover more and more catastrophes are being orchestrated to devastate Shanghai piece by piece. It's up two Salem and Rios to uncover the secret of the 40th Day and survive the chaos.
Salem and Rios are back to shoot their way out of Shanghai.
"With Army of Two: The 40th Day, we're pushing the tactical two-man military team into new battlegrounds offering a completely organic and rich co-op experience to deliver an action-packed co-op shooter this winter," said Reid Schneider, executive producer at EA Montreal. "As chaos blankets Shanghai, China, you must rely on your partner to survive as you weave through a broken city left devastated in a mysterious wake."
Army of Two: The 40th day will include more co-op moves for players to use at any time, which will allow for completely different strategies and options in battle. According to EA, the expansion of co-op moves will create a bigger, more organic and immersive co-op experience. Army of Two: The 40th day will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PSP this winter.

Lionhead is in the middle of releasing the first details on new download content for Fable II.
The news in coming in via the studio's Twitter page. More soon.
Update: Looks like that's all the dev is willing to give away at the moment.
From the Lionhead blog:
"Will there be any more DLC for Fable II?".
The answer is quite simple;
"Yes".
The team here in Guildford is working on some new content right now! More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
More soon then. The developer's latest blog post also went on to report some FAble fact and figures.
"Fable II is still doing really well, with 2.6 million sold its quickly becoming one of the best selling RPGs of Xbox360!
"We had a lot of fun coming up with the achievements (and even won an award for them [Best Achievement Tile, Most Original Achievement) but it looks like our fans are enjoying them just as much; with more than 66,000,000 achievements unlocked to date! The easiest one to achieve turns out to be "The Whippersnapper" (with 2,800,000 people getting it) and the hardest one to add to your list is "The Dollcatcher" with only 61,037 gamers achieving this one (or a mere 1.9%). Shame you can't auction the Hero Dolls off!
"Just over 1,000,000 gamers chose "The Needs of The Few", which just goes to show there is still quite a lot of love in this world..."

via Eurogamer
Call of Duty 4 has racked up 11 million unique players since launch on Xbox Live, and over 4 million on PlayStation Network, according to Infinity Ward's Rob Bowling.
Bowling revealed the sensational figures when accepting one of COD 4: Modern Warfare's three BAFTAs in London on Tuesday night.
"I'm delighted that we just reached 11 million unique players on Xbox Live and we've got over 4 million on PSN," Bowling said, according to eyewitnesses (who'd had a bit to drink so don't blame us if the wording isn't exact).
We've confirmed with Activision that the figures relate to COD 4 alone, not the entire Call of Duty franchise.
According to Microsoft, Xbox Live has 17 million users overall, meaning two-thirds of them have played Infinity Ward's first-person shooter. The figures track all players, not just those who've played online multiplayer (necessarily so, since the word is that only 9.5 million people pay for Xbox Live Gold).
Add the untold number of players out there who haven't connected their 360s to the internet, and you get a sense of the true scale of Infinity Ward's success - and that's not even counting PC and PS3 players. As a comparison, MMO king and Activision Blizzard stablemate World of Warcraft has 11 million players worldwide (although, unlike the COD figure, these are all currently active).
Infinity Ward is currently working on a Modern Warfare sequel, due for release at the end of this year.

If you somehow thought that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 wouldn't make it this year, then this trickle of news will put your worries to rest. Activision CFO Thomas Tippl confirmed today that Infinity Ward's shooter will definitely be arriving this holiday season and is, apparently, "looking incredible."
He said at an annual Wedbush Morgan Securities meeting (via Kotaku) that Activision expects Modern Warfare 2 to be "the most anticipated game of the year," going so far as saying "Perhaps [it'll be] the number one game of the year despite the fact that it's only going to launch in the holiday season." That's a lot of bold statements coming from an executive. Hopefully, Infinity Ward's sophomore Modern Warfare game will live up to Tippl's hype.

A Yale student is suing US Airways for $1 million in compensation for his lost Xbox 360 and the emotional toll of attempting to recover it. He claims he had an Xbox 360 with a "specialized hard drive" and other fancy components worth more than $1,000 (is that the kind with the really, really loud drive noise?) in his checked luggage, and when he went to pick up his luggage it was considerably lighter than before, with the Xbox 360 and components found as the only thing missing. Sounds like no-fun-at-all, and the "run-around" he got with speaking to five different airline employees sounds equally painful, but we're not sure how that all adds up to $1,000,000 -- the maximum allowable by law in his state. US Airways says that not only does the federal limit of liability for lost luggage top out at $3,300, but that electronics checked in luggage are specifically excluded from liability. How kind.

When Christa Manos began to receive dozens of calls one Saturday evening, cursing her for being a bad mother, she quickly realized that she'd been the victim of a prank.
Apparently, someone spammed swarms of Xbox Live users, offering a 2-year-old girl for sale with the simple pitch, "selling a child, will pay for shipping." The spammer also included Manos' phone number in the message.
Many of these Live subscribers subsequently called Manos to give her a piece of their mind. There was no mention if any offers were made, but on the bright side, Manos has "a good idea who is responsible." And we're guessing she wasn't referring to herself.
