With Xbox Live Primetime and Netflix movie sharing both in the works, we had to wonder if we were going to have to wait for a biannual update to get them, or if they'd be doled out piecemeal. When we asked Xbox director Aaron Greenberg today, he wasn't talking specific update timing, but he did say small updates should be more common.
"Some of the benefits of the design of the new interface is that we can add new channels, new content, new features on a more regular basis," he said. "It doesn't mean we won't group a bunch of these and do a big rollout, but I think you will see us do more regular updates and roll things out on a more regular basis."

We don't know about you, but we weren't quite sure what to make of junior game creation platform Kodu when Microsoft showed it off at its CES keynote. Sure, it looked interesting, but scary smart 12-year-old demonstrator Sparrow was so adept at building levels with the software, we couldn't tell if it was as easy as Microsoft was making it out to be.
The answer, judging from the brief demonstration we saw today, is a tentative "Yes."

Star Ocean: The Last Hope dares to go against almost every Square Enix convention. The game is supposedly the last of the franchise, a final fantasy in the Star Ocean universe. The game is being exclusively developed for Xbox 360 and is aiming for an almost-simultaneous worldwide release.
And now, Square Enix is throwing away yet another long-running tradition: delays. Fans have become so accustomed to waiting, and Square Enix has the gall to release this game earlier than expected? Star Ocean: The Last Hope will now appear in the US on February 24th, a full week earlier than previously announced.
Square Enix, we're warning you -- we don't trust your new ways. You stop making ambiguously gendered buckle-wearing heroes, and we won't know you anymore!

As we've seen, a little Atari 2600 is a sure way to liven almost anything -- cakes, candles, landfills -- and it looks like the Xbox 360 is no exception, as none other than Ben Heck has proved with his new so-called 3600 controller. As you might expect, Ben didn't exactly take the expected route to wind up at this creation, instead opting to use the guts of a Guitar Hero 3 controller, which he somehow managed to squeeze into the base of everyone's favorite one-button controller (even leaving room for a guide button and ring of light on the underside). Be sure to hit up the link below for a must-see video of the controller in action and, of course, plenty more pics.

Lionhead Studios has announced a finalised date of the 13th of January for the global release of the first nugget of Fable II DLC.
Knothole Island will sit just off the coast of Albion and will feature new quests, characters, shops, items and weapons. It'll cost 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).
That isn't the only thing to look forward to, however. Lionhead has also revealed that "a free content update" will be available on Live, bringing a number of "gifts" from the people of Knothole Island to players, even if they don't purchase the DLC itself.
Items include Knight's Boots, Assassins Gloves, a special Weight Loss Potion, a collectible silver book and more. The update will also allow access to 50 new leaderboards on Lionhead.com.
A new premium theme based around the DLC is available now from both Live and Xbox.com. It's 250 Microsoft Points to you squire, if you like that sort of thing (or GBP 2.12 / EUR 3).
There's a brand new developer diary here - which hints at some of the details of the package.

Advergaming is huge. At least that's the takeaway from Microsoft's John Kroese, who revealed that the Mike Borland and Ninja Bee developed Doritos' Dash of Destruction racked up almost a million downloads in December.
Kroese, General Manager in the Entertainment & Devices Advertising Business Group at Microsoft said that the Xbox Live Arcade freebie was more warmly received than previous advergames, like the dreadful Yaris, because, according to Crispy Gamer, "it's actually [...] good." Hey, even I downloaded Yaris, despite the critical disdain, not to take anything away from Borland and Ninja Bee.
I've yet to download the Doritos branded game though, largely because I've been on the Cool Ranch wagon for a few years now. I don't need the temptation.

Microsoft's entertainment and devices boss, Robbie Bach, revealed during the company's CES 2009 keynote that a demo of Ensemble Studios' Halo Wars will hit Xbox Live Marketplace on February 5. Additionally, Bach announced a February 28 ship date for the full game, which fits nicely with what MS had previously announced. If the demo is anything like most others -- i.e. the earliest parts of the game -- it will likely contain a lot of what we played just a couple of months back.

EA's The Godfather II will be hitting PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on February 24th in North America, and February 27th in Europe. The open-world game promises to be a more strategic affair than before with the new "Don's View" feature, allowing you to see a 3D representation of your criminal activity across all three of the game's cities.
Those who pre-order the game will have a distinct advantage. The pre-order bonus is an exclusive in-game character, Tommy Cipolla. Other characters in the game start off with just one skill and a level-one weapon, while Tommy is truly a talented guy. He has two skills (arsonist and medic) and can carry a level-two shotgun. How badass. Surely, this is an offer you can't refuse.

Infinity Ward Community Manager Robert Bowling Fourzerotwo has released some player statisticalz from a little game called Call of Duty 4. The data, pulled on Jan. 3, reveals that 10 million unique users have played CoD 4 on Xbox 360 and connected to Live "at least once" after playing.
Going deeper down the fox hole (yes, it's called a mixed metaphor), Infinity Ward checked specific data on certain levels:
71.1%, or 7,111,508 people have completed F.N.G.
68.8%, or 6,886,509 people have completed Cargo Ship.
46.5%, or 5,654,643 people have beaten the game on any difficulty.
2.8%, or 283,632 people have completed Airplane on Veteran difficulty.
Comparatively, pulling the multiplayer numbers from PSN revealed 4,381,276 unique users. Now we just want to know how many tries it took that 2.8% to complete Airplane on Veteran.

With arms raised, Xbox head Robbie Bach declared during Microsoft's CES keynote address, "This Spring we'll launch the Primetime channel on Xbox!" While the announcement didn't exactly elicit an ovation from the crowd, it does put a relative timestamp on the arrival of another, delayed piece of the NXE puzzle (we're still waiting on word about movie sharing). The Primetime channel's complete lineup remains a vague concept of "scheduled social events," but we do have 1 vs. 100 -- and its limitless chest of real prizes -- to look forward to.
The game-show-turned-game-show was briefly demoed during the keynote, ostensibly confirming 102-player support (The One versus the 100-count Mob -- plus one host). Players will be represented by their Avatars and will answer questions "about really, really recent pop-culture," according to Engadget. The demonstration asked: "In 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' who plays a character that ages in reverse?" Three potential answers were offered. Clock's ticking!

Bethesda released new screens today for Fallout 3's Operation Anchorage DLC, along with announcing how high it'll raise the game's level cap with the third DLC pack, Broken Steel, planned for March. The new Operation Anchorage screens (which can be viewed in the gallery below) reveal a ninja suit, a snowy lake landscape and a commie Chinese bunker. The DLC pack is scheduled for release later this month at 800 ($10, 50 caps or 100 pieces of scrap metal).
Bethesda also informed Eurogamer that Broken Steel will raise the player's level cap to 30. We'd previously known that the bump was happening, but had no idea how high. Patient folks may care to wait and see if a discount happens on the packs down the line. As for us, well... that ninja armor looks like it might be worth $10 to put on.

Microsoft pulled no punches during its CES keynote, shuffling an "actual 12-year-old girl" onstage to demonstrate its newly renamed Xbox Live Community Game "Kodu." Apparently too reminiscent of the failed 80s-era adult juice, the former name, Boku, was dropped in favor of the less associable two-syllabler. But we digress. Kodu is still easily described as a LittleBigPlanet-esque effort, but on a much simpler scale -- and probably far less "brilliant," in the Brit's all-purpose sense of the word.
Sparrow, that 12-year-old we mentioned, apparently did create a "pretty impressive" game using Kodu, described by Engadget as, "Katamari meets light-cycles from Tron. It's totally bizarre -- now her and Robbie [Bach] are using cycles to steal rocks from each other." Actually, sounds brilliant to us.
Kodu was originally designed as a learning tool for kids, but Microsoft promises it's compatible with ages "seven to 70." Players reportedly create their game worlds in mere minutes using a pool of 200 building blocks designed to drive simple gameplay concepts like vision, hearing and time. Kodu is scheduled for release this spring and has yet to be priced

New from Divineo USA
The CK3 Probe Add-on for the Xecuter Connectivity Kit 3 (Lite or Pro) is a tool that makes the process of extracting a key from a Lite-On drive totally solderless, without this tool the user would have to bridge the TX and RX points on the drive board with a soldering iron before they could use the CK3 to read from the drive. This tool is for those people that have never soldered before, but know how to flash and don’t want to risk using a cheap iron on their drive and make a mistake, or also for tech guys in a hurry this tool makes the process just that little bit faster.
The CK3 Probe is extremely simple to use and there are excellent step by step tutorials on the Team-Xecuter website. There are two LED's which indicate power to the CK3 Probe and also a successfull connection to the TX point on the Lite-On drive. The package includes the CK3 Probe and the cable that will connect it to the CK3 Lite or Pro

Fable II has been named the most animal-friendly videogame of 2008 by campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
According to the organisation's website, Fable II is "a vegetarian's dream come true".
No, not because it's a bacon sandwich, but because, "In this virtual fight between good and evil, characters powered by tofu are just as powerful as their meat-eating counterparts - and are more fit and attractive to boot."
PETA goes on to observe that eating plant-based foods helps you earn "purity" points, while scoffing delicious meat "makes your character fat and evil".
"A fun and innovative game, it's also an effective tool that teaches gamers the real-life benefits of a vegetarian diet," don't you know. They don't mention the dog.
This isn't the first time PETA has taken an interest in videogames. In November, which was a similarly slow month for news, the organisation parodied Cooking Mama, criticising the original game for featuring too much delicious meat.
