In what seems to be one of the most generous packages of the new year, GameStop has listed a new, two-disc Mass Effect re-release due next month that includes the game, a documentary, trailers, music, design galleries and the Bring Down the Sky DLC, all for $19.99. We've contacted BioWare asking for more details, specifically if a deal this delectable is actually allowed to exist.
You know, Mass Effect may not have been the perfect sci-fi opus we were hoping for, but for $20, you'd have to have the heart of a Geth to be able to pass this up. ... And yes, that gag was brought to you by Wikipedia.

Gold, but not solid gold Xbox 360s. These consoles still play Resident Evil 5, but you can’t buy one on eBay yet. Microsoft is giving these away as prizes for a Lunar New Year promotion. To get a chance at winning one you have to buy a brand new Xbox 360 with a 60GB hard drive or an Xbox 360 Elite between January 15 to February 15 . Sorry, Xbox 360 Arcade purchasers Microsoft only wants big spenders in this contest.
After that you need to write an essay and explain why you love your Xbox. Oh, and this is the most important part, you have to live in Hong Kong. It’s the only region I’ve seen Microsoft offer this contest in, which means whoever wins a gold Xbox 360 will have a real collector’s item in their hands.

Sony recently called out Microsoft and Nintendo for having consoles that require add-ons in order to offer the total package. Now Xbox 360 group PR manager David Dennis responds, and fires right back.
Speaking to Edge, Dennis offered his response to Sony's add-on peddling claims, much like Xbox 360 group product manager Andrew Greenberg did during CES, only a bit more pointedly now that NPD numbers have been released.
"Our strategy from the beginning was to have multiple SKUs with a very flexible offering so the customer can choose the experience that they want. If you don't need a hard drive, you're not forced to have one. If you don't need Wi-Fi, you're not forced to pay for one."

The Gamerscore Blog has posted the Lips premium DLC lineup for the remainder of January. The prices for the tracks vary arbitrarily between a straight $2 and the upwards-creeping $2.25. It's still a little weird that, for the same price, we could get gameplay elements for another three instruments with Rock Band DLC, but who are we to judge?

Looks like Gears of War 2 is riding the Cole Train all the way to the Imulsion bank, baby. Epic's global product manager, Guy Welch, informs GameDaily that Gears 2 has sold over 4 million units in its first two months, which is double that of the original during the same time frame.
Welch adds that the original Gears has sold over 5 million copies to date. Unless Gears 2 suddenly drops into an emergence hole, it should outsell its papa in the near future.

Curious as to what Castle Crashers developer The Behemoth has been up to lately? Well too bad, because the team isn't saying. Co-founder and self-proclaimed Best Blogger of 2009 Dan Paladin, however, is teasing on the company's site that they've been prototyping a new game. No other details are provided. Our prediction? It's gonna look like a Flash game.
Last week, Microsoft announced that Castle Crashers was the most popular Xbox Live Arcade game of 2008 and ranked it 17th out of all Xbox LIVE titles. The King Pack DLC debuted earlier this week for 160 [Microsoft Points] ($2).

Some months ago Cave announced they were polishing Deathsmiles’ visuals for the Xbox 360 version. The spit and shine looks great even though Deathsmiles is still walled in by a skeletal border.
Don’t like the new graphics? Fine. You can play Deathsmiles without them in regular mode. Or play Deathsmiles: Mega Black Label, the latest version of Deathsmiles coming to arcades, without them. Deathsmiles has lots of options and all of them are in English too. Don’t take English menus as a sign that Deathsmiles is going to get released over here. Cave’s PS2 games have English menus too and none of them got an international release. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen with Deathsmiles.

The Xbox Originals program selection process continues to confuse, as the Gamerscore Blog revlelas the next addition to the lineup of downloadable "classics" for the Xbox 360, Terminal Reality's Blowout.
Only the fact that Crecente might actually be reading this post keeps me from just writing "Why?" 200 times and calling it a day. For 1200 Microsoft points on January 19th you can download Majesco's 2003 run and gun shooter, which scored around a 50 average on GameRankings. If that's a bit too pricey, you could always buy the original game for the Xbox on Amazon for $1.50 used. Or you could just not buy it at all, which is probably your safest bet.
At this point I am convinced the Xbox Originals selection process features a hat and a blindfolded child.

The Resident Evil 5 demo is coming to the US -- this time officially -- and is "premiering exclusively" the week of January 26th on Xbox 360, so sayeth the Major. The demo features two levels that can be played either solo (with AI support) or with a buddy via split-screen or Xbox Live -- yeah, it's the same as the Japanese demo, unsurprisingly. No word on the release of a PlayStation 3 demo, but we've poked our Capcom contact and will let you know what we find out. In Japan, the PS3 demo is only available on a bonus disc.
Update: A Capcom press release clarifies that the Xbox Live demo will be released on Monday, January 26th and, for Gold subscribers, will be "available exclusively on Xbox 360 for one week" -- at which point the PSN version will be released (during the week of February 5th). In addition, the Resident Evil 5 TGS trailer will be available for download on Xbox Live beginning this Friday, January 16th.

Or rather, "Hal's Rifle." As many players of Fable 2's $10 Knothole Island add-on have discovered, the meteorologically confused island offers an anachronistic surprise within the "Box of Secrets" store. If you've got a pure experience extract potion to trade, this rapid-fire rifle (with an ammo capacity of 24!) is sure to complete that spartan ensemble in your hero's closet. Switch out those pesky Hobbes for Grunts and nobody will know you're playing a non-shooty game. Masculinity preserved!
Another futuristic, albeit considerably less charming, addition to Albion comes in the former of an alleged animation glitch. According to a PushingPlay blogger, the DLC's addition caused his character to cease walking and simply slide everywhere -- appropriate for the Knothole's (sometimes) frigid climate, but something we've asked Lionhead to look into. Check back later for Joystiq's verdict on the new quests.

We know, you can't always judge a book by its cover -- a game by its screens. But "Braid clone" was the first thing that came to mind when we saw Clover, a forthcoming Xbox Live Arcade, no, "Community Games" title. And let's face it, the Community Games channel is still the playpen for the bastard children of Xbox Live. It's like a pet shop window: you glance at it, feel an inkling of "Should I?" and then proceed on down the street to the Arcade.
But a closer look at that doggie in the window, Clover, reveals a game worth considering. Developed by indie outlet Binary Tweed Ltd., Clover is, in the words of its British maker, "a plot-driven platformer in the style of classic titles such as Fantastic Dizzy that sees the player solve logical puzzles by collecting items, talking to a diverse cast of characters and exploring artistically realised environments." It follows Binary Tweed's motto -- "New games that are a bit like old games, but better" -- by injecting modern trends like autosave and the dissolution of lives and health into the game's traditional framework. Still, Clover promises to be very much about death, as the orphaned player must deal with the sudden demise of the in-game mother and the larger political themes at play. A heady romp for a mere 400 ($5) when Clover releases in Q1 2009 (that's soon!).

Steve Ballmer's recent statements about the Zune seemed to imply that it didn't have much of a future as a hardware product. Microsoft has responded to such suspicions: "Poppycock! Codswallop! FLAPDOODLE!"
Well, the actual response was a little less Victorian (as reported by Wired Epicenter):
"Basically, what happened last week, Steve [Ballmer] said a couple of things about the category," said Adam Sohn, head of Microsoft's Zune marketing division, causing speculation that Microsoft would stop making Zunes. However, he clarified, "we're not getting out of the hardware business at all," adding that Microsoft is "deeply committed" to continuing to its Zune hardware strategy.
For what it's worth, this is a direct statement from Microsoft—the crux of last week's Financial Times story was not found in a direct quote, but rather in a section of analysis. Says the FT:
[The future of the Zune] lies in planting the software and online service linked to the player in other devices.
Given that music phones have long since come of age, such a strategy—whereby the Zune is a software platform primarily intended for the multitude of Windows Mobile handsets—would make sense. But for now at least, the standalone Zune seems to have some time left.

Once the PS3 is at a more affordable price point (we expect a cut to $299 in April), we think that sales of that device will once again begin to grow. We expect another cut in price for the Xbox 360, with the feature-laden Pro model likely to come down in price to $249 at or before this year's E3 show in June. We expect Nintendo to maintain Wii pricing at $249 until the company sees signs that demand is slowing, which means a price cut may not happen until late in the year, if at all," Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter said.

While Community Games has launched without a hitch, the situation is more troublesome behind the scenes, Community Games developers told MTV Multiplayer, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The root of the problem: we know as much as developers do about how games have been selling. Official Xbox Live evangelist Major Nelson has released several top ten lists seemingly indicating Xbox 360 users would pay for quality indie games, but how many people are buying them? Our sources said those numbers haven't been disclosed to anyone outside of Microsoft, developers included.
Microsoft told MTV Multiplayer they are currently working on making sales data available to developers. "All Community Games developers will be able to access sales and download numbers through the [XNA Creators Club] Web site by March," said a company spokesperson in an e-mailed statement this morning.

Bizarre Creations has released a wicked megamix of all of the tunes from Geometry Wars 1 and 2's thumping soundtracks.
"Chris Chudley (of Audio Antics) was kind enough to put together a badass Megamix, featuring some of the songs from the entire GW series in a 13 minute long special remix version," said Bizarre community manager Ami Langton.
"The mix is named '46860 Choices', and we're releasing it for free download."
They certainly are, and you can download it right now via this link. We're using it to upset quiet corners of the office via our subwoofer right now.

There's good news this morning for Mirror's Edge fans of all platform persuasions. PC users, you'll actually get to play the game when it finally appears on store shelves this week. For the 360 or PS3 people, DICE has nailed down the nebulous "January" release date for the Time Trial DLC to the 29th.
For $10, you'll get nine races spanning seven brand new maps. Comparing the screens we've seen in the gallery below to the maps in the retail version, the DLC looks a little less "realistic" and a little more, "Hey, we didn't have to pay for textures," but we'll hold off on judging until we lay our own eyes on them.
