This week, a number of outlets seemed to be making a big fuss over a supposedly new, mandatory update that Microsoft was implementing on new Xbox 360 game discs to make sure owners are switching over to the latest dashboard, called the New Xbox Experience. However, since the beginning, not only have users who sign into Xbox Live been required to update to the latest software, but Microsoft also says that it's been standard protocol all along to include the latest system software on retail game discs.
A Microsoft spokesperson told GameDaily BIZ: "It has always been standard protocol for Microsoft to include the latest version of the Xbox 360 dashboard on game discs. This is not unique to the New Xbox Experience update. To enhance platform security, Xbox 360 owners who are not connected to Xbox LIVE will have their consoles updated to the current system software from game discs they purchase at retail. The New Xbox Experience which launched in November 2008 is now included on new Xbox 360 game discs."
Media reports pegged MLB 2K9 and H.A.W.X. as the first titles to include the NXE software on the disc, but it seems that all new games will come with it.

Microsoft is to kick off a new six week long promotion of Xbox Live Arcade content, beginning March 18.
The company intends to follow the success of last July's Summer of Arcade promotion, which saw revenues jump 67 per cent on the service.
Days of Arcade will offer seven titles, beginning with Hasbo's Family Game Night, and also include Capcom's Flock, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, Sega's Outrun Arcade and UNO Rush.

Rockstar's exclusive GTA IV content for Xbox 360 – The Lost and the Damned – has sold one million so far, and is likely to reach two million downloads by the end of the year.
That's according to analyst Michael Pachter, who said the second GTA IV episode for Xbox 360 is likely to arrive by November following the close of the company's October 31 fiscal year.
Pachter also believes that the next console instalment of the series will be released by the end of 2010 – and generate profits of over 50 per cent more than last year's GTA IV.
By 2010 the installed base of home consoles is expected to be around 60 million in the US and Europe, and as many as 30 per cent of users could pick up the game.
This compares to GTA IV sales of 12 million units, or 40 per cent of the 30 million PS3 and Xbox 360 users, when it was released in April 2008.
"We don’t think it is reasonable to estimate that sales of GTA will double the prior version, but we think that a 25 – 30 per cent penetration is reasonable, suggesting 15 – 18 million units sold," said Pachter.
"That means that Take-Two’s profits from the next iteration should be approximately 50 per cent greater than from the last version."

Xbox Live figurehead Major Nelson recently updated his blog with the titillating announcement of a six-week long promotion titled the "Days of Arcade." Similar to last year's "Summer of Arcade" event, the promotion will kick off March 18 with the release of Hasbro Family Game Night, with the following five weeks bringing a number of highly anticipated titles to the Marketplace, including The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, Flock, Outrun Online Arcade, Puzzle Quest: Galactrix, UNO Rush and Tozai Games' remake of Lode Runner.
Aside from Game Night, we won't know which games are coming which weeks until Major Nelson announces them on the Mondays preceeding their Wednesday releases. However, as the keen-eyed mathmaticians among you have already noticed, with seven titles dropping in six weeks, one XBLA Wednesday will bring us a double dose of downloadable distractions. We've already canceled our Spring Break excursion to Cabo San Lucas in a fit of breathless anticipation.

Pity MTV News producer Brian Jacks who is suffering from persistent Xbox 360 hardware problems. Anyone know a solution?
***
by Brian Jacks
My name is Brian Jacks and I have a problem.
No, it’s not alcoholism or drug dependency. The issue I’m dealing with is simply that my Xbox 360 has been broken from the get-go, and Microsoft has refused to do anything about it even after three repairs for the exact same thing.
It was in July 2007 that I purchased my system. With it, I purchased a used copy of “Dead Rising” along with two new titles. The new games worked fine, but with “Dead Rising” I received the first instance of what would come to haunt me: when I put the disc in, I received a white screen that read, “To play this disc, put it in an Xbox 360.”
I naturally assumed it was an issue with the game, so I returned it and thought that’d be the end of it. But of course, it wasn’t.
The next casualty was Rockstar’s “Table Tennis,” which initially had been working. Now however, when I put the disc in, I received the same dreaded white screen. I immediately tried “Project Gotham Racing 3” and had the same issue. Ironically enough, that copy of the game was given to me by Microsoft for an Xbox 360 event that I ran for them.
Because it’s cumbersome to lug the unit through the NYC subway system, I didn’t get around to sending it in for repairs until November 2007. Weeks later it was returned to me. I tried the same discs and they still wouldn’t play; I received the exact same screen. Nothing had been done to the unit.
Because of a death in the family, I didn’t get around to sending it to Microsoft again until February 2008. I got it back weeks later and…it still had the *exact* same issue. I called Microsoft and sent it straight back for a third time in March 2008.
When I received it after the *third* repair, I tried discs and still had the *exact* same issue *again* straight out of the box. I called Microsoft to report this, but never got around to sending it in for a fourth time because they wouldn’t guarantee that they would replace an obviously lemon unit.
At this point, I was worn down by the process and honestly, because of the death in the family, I didn’t have the urge to play video games any longer. So the unit sat — for about a year — from the end of March to this week when I picked up “Gears of War 2.” I picked it up, brought it home and unwrapped it and placed it in the drive. And got…the white screen telling me to place the disc in an Xbox 360. (See the dreaded white screen here, in an image via NeoGAF.)
I called Microsoft support and because it was five months out of warranty, they would not accept it back for repair or replacement, even after I spoke to a manager and laid everything out. I asked them why units with the red-ring-of-death received a three year warranty while mine — which went through three repairs for the same issue — was only receiving the one year. I pleaded to no avail.
Microsoft, if you’re reading this, I just want a unit that works, which I don’t think is too much to ask. I’m happy to keep buying games for it and supporting the system, but I just need something that actually, you know, plays games. To readers, I’d love to hear if anyone else has suffered from the same issue I am.
Someone. Please. Help. Me.
Brian

A recent update for the 360's version of Fallout 3 is carrying a significant visual upgrade, with the addition of specular maps bringing the textures of the game in-line with its PC and PS3 counterparts.
The 360 version of Fallout 3 was widely regarded to be a superior port, with a frame rate that was more stable than its PS3 counterpart. However, one aspect where it did suffer in relation to its rival console was in its less detailed textures, which appeared flat on the Xbox 360 – an issue that's been addressed with the latest patch, which brings specular maps to certain textures in the game (that's shinier graphics to you and me).
Digital Foundry – picked up by Eurogamer – has got the full details on what the upgrade brings, as well as a selection of comprehensive comparison shots.
Fallout 3 was named IGN's game of 2008, although IGN UK awarded the game a slightly more reserved 8.8 when it was reviewed last October.

Square Enix has announced that Star Ocean: The Last Hope will be released in Europe this June.
Some reports floating round the internet say the game has been delayed, as it was originally down for "spring".
But that's not the case, according to Square Enix. "The game has not been delayed," a spokesperson told Eurogamer. "We use the summer solstice on June 21st as the official start of summer, so by announcing the game will be released in June, it will still technically be released in our interpretation of spring."
Star Ocean: The Last Hope is an Xbox 360 exclusive. It's a prequel to the popular role-playing space opera series, and will feature numerous gameplay advances such as the ability to control your own spaceship.

Three tantalising new demos have hit XBLA this afternoon, namely The Wheelman, Wanted: Weapons of Fate and Legends of Wrestlemania.
The Wheelman is Vin Diesel's second demo of the week, what with all the Riddick, but couldn't be more different to the stealthy prison-breaking of Dark Athena. It's all about an on-the-run getaway driver larking about in Barcelona, where we're pretty sure he meets up with Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz for a wild threesome in the back of a Austin Allegro on a major motorway at rush hour. There are guns and stunt driving as well, but it's the hot lady-on-lady action we're looking forward to rendered as quicktime events.
Wanted is another movie tie-in, all about bullet curving assassins as well as honour, death and betrayal. Probably. It's been done by GRIN, the studio behind GRAW and GRAW 2 as well as Bionic Commando, both regular and rearmed, so don't dismiss is just yet. That's what the demo's for.
Lastly, Legends of Wrestlemania lets players recreate"classic" "fights" from 80s and 90s. What this means in practice is being able to rub Hulk Hogan and Andre the giant up against each other while doing hilarious squeaky voiceovers which suggest they're pleasuring each other. For us, at least.
All three are available now, go get 'em.

The upcoming Xbox 360 Tomb Raider: Underworld DLC, Lara's Shadow, will allow you "to play as an entirely new character for the first time in the history of the Tomb Raider franchise".
Well, sort of. You'll get to step into the shoes of the Doppleganger, a clone of Lara Croft who commands "superior shadow powers, increased agility" and the "ability to slow time to unleash devastating melee combos".
We'd have more info if the developer diary movie Eidos released didn't appear to be broken, - we'll update the story with the movie as soon as we get a working version.
Lara's Shadow is the second Xbox 360-exclusive DLC pack and is due to launch on March 10 as a 1.07GB download via Xbox Live.

It's bad enough going through the hassle of shipping your Xbox 360 off to customer support, but now Microsoft won't even give you the box to ship it in. Updated.
A Consumerist reader complained that after his Xbox red-ringed – again – he called Microsoft to get a shipping box to mail his console in for repairs. But the customer service rep told him he'd need to find his own box. As he pointed out, this gives them a possible out. Who's to stop them from claiming the box was damaged in the mail?
My Xbox red-ringed for the second time this weekend. Which is almost a relief after hearing how bad my disc drive was sounding, but not so much after hearing the new policy. I was told that Xbox no longer ships out a box to you and you must find a box to ship it out in. Yeah I guess its not a big deal, but I think it gives them another thing to hold over your head; "We are sorry, Sir, but you didn't back it well enough and it appears the damage was due to shipping, we cannot help you."
Bummer move, Microsoft, especially over something that's very much your own fault.
Update: Microsoft is saying that they do in fact still ship boxes to customers with broken Xboxes (if the customers ask for one), according to Kotaku. Which would mean this whole debacle is just one case of one employee being terrible, rather than the entire company. Unless you count how people wouldn't need to ship their Xboxes in anyway if the company had bothered making them right in the first place.

After its successful rollout last year, Microsoft is to make NXE a mandatory upgrade for 360 users wanting to play the latest titles on their machines, according to reports.
NXE, or New Xbox Experience, was released last year and completely overhauled the Xbox 360’s previous dashboard ‘blade’ system. It also introduced avatars to the 360 experience, as well as hard drive installs for games.

via Computer and Video Games
As anticipated as it was, the Resident Evil 5 demo was met with some degree of criticism from fans who were not quite happy with a few aspects of Capcom's latest effort - notably the controls.
RE5 plays much like RE4, which may please some, but it can feel a little clunky and restrictive for a game so action-orientated. But producer Jun Takeuchi says that's all part of increasing tension levels.
"We went in knowing that we weren't making a typical third- or first-person shooter; we were making a Resident Evil game," said Takeuchi.
"It was important for us to go with the design choices that would make the best Resident Evil game that we could. When it comes to Resident Evil, we feel that by imposing a restriction on the player you actually increase the tension that they feel while playing," he explained.
"Finding the balance between that and the player's frustration is very important when approaching the design of a game like this. I think that by imposing certain restrictions on the player you actually help to heighten the fear and the tension, and, ultimately, you create a better horror game."

For those who found Street Fighter IV to be a little bit too 3D, Arc System Works may have the game you're looking for. The latest issue of Famitsu has first word on a home version of the publisher's latest arcade fighter, BlazBlue. Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 will get a conversion of the game, with a Japanese release planned for summer.
BlazBlue is a high definition 2D fighter from the makers of Guilty Gear. Known for its sharp visuals, the game is now available for play in arcades. Be sure and check out all our coverage of the arcade version.
The home versions will see some big additions. Most notable is an all new story mode, with individual stories on offer for each character. This mode promises branching stories based off both battle results and player choices, along with full voice for all dialog. Arc has even gotten Studio Gonzo to work on animated sequences!
It appears that this story mode will be huge in terms of volume, with general director Toshimichi Mori joking with the magazine that the staff complained about there being too much content! Players can expect the equivalent of a full Japanese-style dialog-based adventure game, with over 30 hours of play time.
Also new for the home is network compatibility. Players throughout the world can look forward to online matches along with online rankings and a viewing mode. Download content is also being planned.
The game will also see a few gameplay changes, most notably the addition of Astral Heat special moves for all characters. In the arcade version, only a few of the boss characters had access to these moves.
Since online play is confirmed to be worldwide, we're going to assume Arc has some plans for BlazBlue in international markets. We'll let you know once something official is announced outside of Japan.

World in Conflict was first announced as coming to Xbox 360 back in 2007 by publisher Sierra Entertainment. Later, the ambitions shifted to the sequel, World in Conflict: Soviet Assault and the PlayStation 3 entered the picture. When Vivendi, parent company of Sierra, merged with Activision, many of Sierra's projects were canceled or dropped, including Soviet Assault. It was later saved by Ubisoft when that company purchased the World in Conflict developer, Massive Entertainment.
However, it seems that Ubisoft's ambitions are not as grand as Sierra's were. When contacted for an update on the console release, Ubisoft provided this statement, "World of Conflict: Soviet Assault will be released for the PC later this month. A console version of World in Conflict is not planned for release at this time."

description
As the era of the nation-state draws toward its end, the world of warfare is evolving rapidly. New challenges demand new solutions, sometimes with unpredictable outcomes.
For many years, state-sponsored militaries have struggled to maintain and modernize their forces. Increasing budget restrictions and difficulties in recruiting skilled personnel have led many countries to seek other solutions. More and more nations now rely increasingly on Private Military Companies (PMC) – elite mercenary groups staffed with equally elite personnel - to support their field operations.
PMCs have proven to be excellent partners in respect to efficiency, skills, low prices, and reliability. They’ve been able to fulfill most of the mission normally handled by regular armies, without risking political fallout.
In time, these private military corps diversified their field of operations, from mere securing land objectives to motorized assault and counter-intelligence. It was not long before a few of these PMC secured enough resources to require being involved complete support air and sea-bound operations.
With each passing year, the PMCs expand their influence and scope of activity. Initially just consultants, they are now involved in surveillance, logistics, site security, and other essential roles. In order to keep the war machine going most of the PMC warranted firms dealing with other sources of income such as mining, oil extraction, airliners, goods manufacturing etc. Ensuring a steady flow of currency allowed these companies to operate a tighter game against their opposition. Each year, they come closer to serving as fully operational field units, and their services are so widely used they’re already essential. Pandora’s Box has been opened. There’s no getting rid of the PMCs now.
