An Xbox graphic designer who allegedly suffered abuse over his sexuality at work claimed Microsoft has a culture of homophobia, according to papers submitted to a tribunal.
Jamie Durrant, 38, who is homosexual, is suing Microsoft for £45,000 for "hurt feelings" because he says he was called by nicknames including '*** Boy Jim'.
Mr Durrant claims that mocking messages were circulated with headings including 'I'm Jim and I'm Gay', 'Me and My Favourite Men' and 'Ladies Are Bad'.
Mr Durrant earns £50,000-a-year designing video games for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.
He claims that the firm did not have policies in place to deal with his complaints about homophobic harassment.
Mr Durrant, of Godalming, Surrey, is suing Microsoft at London South Employment Tribunal for discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation.
He has been signed off sick for depression for seven months and is demanding £45,000 in compensation for lost earnings and injury to feelings.
Last month, Microsoft banned a lesbian Xbox gamer who was being harassed by other players.
The gamer named Theresa suffered homophobic insults after identifying herself as a lesbian in her profile.
Microsoft suspended Theresa's account because her reference to her sexual orientation was considered "offensive" to the Xbox community.
Mr Durrant has been employed for 11 years in Guildford by Lionhead Studios, which was bought by Reading-based Microsoft two years ago.
In legal papers submitted to the tribunal, Mr Durrant claimed that the abusive emails were first sent in January last year.
He said: "I have never hidden my sexuality from the office and I felt this could be targeted at myself.
"This was not the first time there was homophobic content in the office.
"Previously, I had tried to deal with it myself. This time, I did not feel that I could."
Mr Durrant said he complained to human resources chiefs that there was a "homophobic attitude" within Microsoft.
He claimed he agreed with them not to raise a formal grievance for fear of creating an "uneasy atmosphere" in the office.
Instead, it was allegedly agreed that HR would email staff reminding them of "how to behave responsibly in a diverse office".
Mr Durrant said he expected the email to be sent within a fortnight but months went by without anything happening.
When he queried the delay, he says he was allegedly told that the firm would have to draw up new policies before any email could be sent.
He said: "I was very surprised that Microsoft did not have any policies relating to this sexual orientation harassment."
Mr Durrant claimed that he did not think HR chiefs were taking his complaint seriously.
He was allegedly asked to sign a document agreeing not to raise a formal grievance and confirming that he was happy his complaint was being dealt with.
He said that he refused but it was agreed that Microsoft would post its anti-discrimination policy on the firm's intranet for staff to see.
Mr Durrant has accused Microsoft HR chiefs of "blatantly disregarding" and "obstructing" his complaint.
He said he was offered counselling but said: "I feel like they're making out that I'm the one with the problem and not the homophobic aspects of the company."
He was signed off sick for depression in August last year and is still on half pay.
He said: "I feel I should be compensated for the stress that this whole complaint procedure has placed on me, the amount of effort and time I have put into trying to get this resolved and acknowledgment that they have done nothing whilst the homophobic harassment continued, making my workplace uncomfortable and unpleasant."
Microsoft denies discriminating on the ground of sexual orientation and is vigorously contesting Mr Durrant's claim.
A spokeswoman said: "Microsoft is unable to comment on pending litigation."
Microsoft said it had suspended the lesbian Xbox gamer's account because it does not permit "expression of any type of orientation, be that hetero or other" in profiles.
It invited players to report any inappropriate behaviour, adding: "Harassment of any kind is not condoned and is taken very seriously."
Mr Durrant's case is due to be heard later this year.

Diner Dash will be making its way to the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare this summer, courtesy of Hudson Entertainment. The popular franchise, featuring Flo the waitress and her efforts towards making a junky diner a success, has sold more than 2 million units to date.
"We're delighted to bring Flo and Diner Dash to new gen consoles for the first time," said Sabine Duvall, Vice President of Product Development at Hudson Entertainment. "Players have fallen in love with the award-winning series because of its quirky characters and fast-paced fun."
On consoles, Diner Dash will be a 3D affair with players being given the ability to take direct control of Flo. Success will come to those that can seat customers, take orders and deliver food as efficiently and quickly as possible. If you are a Diner Dash fan and prefer the old point-and-click style of gaming, that option will be available as well. Multiplayer modes will also be available with a Team Dash for 8 players or a two player face off.

Fear not, Zune lovers, your beloved media player isn't going anywhere just yet. Interviewed at the McGraw-Hill media conference, Microsoft's head honcho Steve Ballmer said that the hardware will continue to improve, but reaffirmed that its future may be as software / ecosystem found on other devices. "I won't say full steam ahead because that implies acceleration of investment," he said, "but we're going to sustain our investment." It's unclear from the transcription -- much of it paraphrased by The Wall Street Journal -- whether or not Ballmer had given any indication as to the future of the hardware itself. Of course, should one of those mentioned hardware improvements managed to take a notable bite out of Apple's iPod business, we reckon those investments will see an uptick. We've already heard that the service would find its way on non-Zune devices sometime this year, but mum's still the word on any details thereof.

Electronic Arts has nailed down a release date for Need for Speed Shift, but don't expect it any time soon. The latest version of the popular racing franchise will hit North America September 22 of this year while Europe will get it a few days earlier on September 17.
This reboot for the series sports the largest roster of cars in the history of the franchise with a new focus on the cockpit view. "With Need for Speed SHIFT, we set out to create a racing game that pushes the genre and delivers something never before seen in a Need for Speed title," said Patrick Soderlund, Senior Vice President at EA Games Europe. "By focusing on the driver's experience through the first-person view, we are able to capture the high-speed intensity and gripping emotions of racing."
Need for Speed Shift is being developed by Slightly Mad Studios in conjunction with Black Box. The PSP version is being made by EA's Bright Light Studio.

Geoff Keighley and co. got the scoop on the newest trailer and a ton of info for the upcoming Wolfenstein game from Raven Software on last night's GameTrailers TV. The game, unsurprisingly, seeks to bring back most of what we remember from the classic id Software title, from main character B.J. Blazkowicz to the gauntlet of Third Reich baddies taking aim at B.J. along the way. This may or may not be a good thing, considering when we last saw Wolfenstein at the NY Comic Con, we were less than impressed.
Additionally, the next-gen current-gen update to Wolfenstein brings with it some new weapons (a particle gun that vaporizes enemies, for instance) as well as a twist on the gameplay called "the veil," which the game's creative director, Eric Beissman, describes as, "An alternative reality that sits on top of where we live." From what we can glean from the gameplay in the video, this "veil" business seems to be Wolfenstein's version of bullet-time, as well as a means to employ various powers.
To find out everything Mr. Keighley discovered, peep the interview with Beissman after the break. Oh, and yeah, no mech Hitler! Seriously?!

February NPD results are in and Xbox 360 highlights include:
· Xbox 360 system sales hit 391,000, up 53 percent from a year earlier, as the best value in the industry continues to win over consumers
· Xbox 360 claimed four of the top 10 video game titles in February
· "Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned" set a sales record for Xbox LIVE
Xbox 360 sustained its record-setting pace this year as U.S. retail sales jumped 53 percent in February from a year earlier to hit 391,000 units. With Xbox 360 starting at just $199, the system offers a compelling buy for consumers looking to make their entertainment dollars go further. Xbox 360 is home to the most top-rated games of any current-generation console, with 135 titles earning a score of 80 or above on Metacritic, versus 94 for PlayStation 3 and 43 for Wii (Metacritic data). Xbox 360 also features a vibrant online community with Xbox LIVE and takes entertainment beyond games with more than 30,000 pieces of content available for download, including more than 12,000 movies and TV shows for instant watch through a partnership with Netflix.
Games on Xbox 360
Xbox 360 claimed four of February's top 10 console games, including "Street Fighter IV," "Call of Duty: World at War," "FEAR 2," "Skate 2." (February NPD data). Each game was from a different publisher, underscoring Xbox 360's role as a driver of the entire industry. Sales of third-party games on Xbox 360 hit $162 million in February, more than either competitor (February NPD data). Xbox 360 owners continue to buy more games than owners of other systems, having bought an average of 8.2 titles each.
"The Lost and Damned" Sets Xbox LIVE Sales Record
On February 17, "The Lost and Damned," the first highly anticipated Game Add-on for "Grand Theft Auto IV," was released exclusively on Xbox LIVE. This all-new chapter in the "GTA IV" world set a record for first-day sales on Xbox LIVE and highlighted Xbox 360 as the only console where you can play additional episodes of the game.
Setting the Stage for Sustained Growth
Xbox 360 rolled out more hits in March with the release of "Halo Wars," which put a strategic twist on one of the best-selling franchises of all time. As announced earlier today, sales of "Halo Wars" have already hit 1 million copies worldwide. Also, Capcom's globally popular "Resident Evil" franchise came to Xbox 360 for the first time with the release of "Resident Evil 5" on March 13. Xbox and Capcom further stoked fan enthusiasm by releasing a red "RE5" limited edition Xbox 360 console.
Consumers Get More Entertainment on Xbox LIVE
· Xbox 360 is the leading console for online play and is used by fully half of people who play console games online(NPD Online Gaming 2009)
· Xbox 360 owners spend an average of 8 hours per week playing games online, more than any other platform, including the PC (NPD Online Gaming 2009)
· The top five movie downloads on Xbox LIVE in February included "Body of Lies," "College," "Eagle Eye," "My Best Friend's Girl," and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (Microsoft internal data)
· Game Add-ons give Xbox 360 owners the ability to extend the life of their favorite games, with examples ranging from the wildly successful "The Lost and Damned" for "Grand Theft Auto IV," to extra tracks for music games.

West Virginian Joystiq.com super blogger and Monte Cristo sandwich fanboy Justin McElroy has authored a series of stunning posts that bring the rising trend of a disturbing Xbox 360 error to light.
The E74 error is caused when the "ANA" image scaler chip fails, overheats or there is serious AV connection problem. The hot air flow from the CPU and GPU goes right over the location of the ANA chip so it might be slowly cooked by normal use.
An Xbox 360 that is suffering an E74 error will have the lower-right quadrant of the Ring of Light flash on the front on the console and a multiple languages error message may display that will read "E74. System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support." or the screen will simply glitch out and display a feild of video snow.
The more disturbing trend is that this errors seems to be affecting Falcon motherboard based Xbox 360 system. The Falcon system has a cooler 65nm CPU and a hot 90nm GPU. The newer Jasper motherboard has both a 65nm CPU and 65nm GPU and hopefully it won't succumb to either the E74 or RROD but only time will tell.
The E74 Error is the annoying cousin of the RROD since while it is not a direct failure of the CPU. GPU or RAM but it is caused by the high amount of heat eventually damaging the ANA chip causing it to fail. While it is true that the rate of RROD errors are dropping but it might bring other hardware failures to light such as the E74 that we never saw because the spot light was on the RROD.
Microsoft's official statement on the E74 error that they sent to Joystiq.com is:
"E74 is a general hardware error on Xbox 360 indicated by a single red flashing light in the Xbox Ring of Light and an error message visible on the television. This error is unrelated to the three flashing red lights error and there is not a single root cause. We encourage anyone who receives this error to contact Xbox Customer support through www.xbox.com/support or 1-800-4-MY-XBOX. The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles continue to have a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out."

But be careful, because your enemies can do the same. Once you experience Wheelman’s Vehicle Melee, you’ll never want to play another driving game without it!
Escape down a narrow alleyway on the back of a tricked-out motorcycle. Drive through an office building to make your getaway. Hop behind the wheel of exclusively licensed vehicles like the Pontiac G8 and Saturn Astra and make your escape in style. Drive it. Trash it. Crash it. You’re the Wheelman, it’s all up to you
Survive death-defying feats and perform pulse-pounding moves to trigger extreme over-the-top Hollywood-style mobile attack maneuvers including: - Aimed Shot: Drive and shoot at the same time while the rest of the world slows to an easy-to-target blur; - The Air Jack: Leap from moving car to moving car to take control of a brand new ride; - The 360° Cyclone Spin: Spin around 180° to take out anyone that’s behind you, and then spin back 180° again to resume your route
Even the best Wheelman sometimes needs to get out of the vehicle. Take to the Barcelona streets for on-foot action — but make sure to remember your guns
Set in the exotic location of Barcelona, Spain. This classic European city is densely populated with traffic and pedestrians that react intelligently to your actions as you roam around realistic environments filled with massively destructible objects

Cave will release Deathsmiles in April which has Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles ver. 1.1. The home version doesn’t include Deathsmiles: Mega Black Label, a revision with a new character and level released in arcades this past October. Think of it like Street Fighter II: Championship Edition to Street Fighter II.
Deathsmiles: Mega Black Label was sold as a separate board to arcade operators. Sometime after Deathsmiles comes out on the Xbox 360 Cave will distribute Deathsmiles: Mega Black Label as a 1,400 Microsoft Point ($17.50) piece of downloadable content. This is better than selling the upgrade as a separate game, but what do you think about Cave’s strategy?
This summer we’re going to see an influx of arcade ports like BlazBlue and the King of Fighters XII. Would you be happy paying $10 or $15 for the latest arcade revision that adds a few fighters and rebalances the game one year later?

Is it the Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack release date? Bungie's latest update ends with "PS: 04/09/09." Last week, notes sharp-eyed reader Crono51, the studio hinted the release date was coming "Soon™. Maybe next week."
When people throw cryptic crap at me and gratuitously trademark adverbs, I just start taking it all at face value and obligate them to statements they may not have intended, because that usually drags out the truth pretty fast. So (clears throat) your Mythic Map Pack is OTW in about three weeks*. Or Bungie is using the European date format, in which case it will be here Sept. 4.
* - Unless it's not. This is a rumor after all.

Anyone who's upgraded to the New Xbox Experience knows that it gives a run on Wii's money as far as personal iconography is concerned. I just learned that you can look up peoples' avatars—as long as you have a gamertag of someone you love or hate, plug it in here and you'll see just how amazing or lame their gaming persona is. If you've known about this for a million years, well, I'm sorry. You are awesome. Forgive my lateness. And yeah, for those wondering, that's my half-assed attempt at self-representation right there.

Joystiq has been tracking the new starlet of Xbox 360 failures: the E74 error. It appears as the lower right light on the console turning red and an on-screen message telling the user to contact support with the error E74. The number of reported E74 errors seems to have risen since August 2008 and people are wondering if the more recent increase in errors are related to the release of the New Xbox Experience (NXE) Dashboard update. Did Microsoft reclass Red Ring of Death (RROD) failures as E74 to avoid warranty replacements?

Breanna Lucci, a student at Massachusetts' Academy of Notre Dame high school, has a bone to pick with Activision. (Which, we imagine, she'll later give to her two Pomeranians, "Fluffy" and "Winnie The Pooh.") Lucci, the president of her school's Animal Rights Club, is upset by the need to shoot Nazi attack dogs in Call of Duty: World at War. So, she's started a petition.
"Parents need to know what they are buying their kids. Killing animals should not be a form of entertainment," Lucci told the local Lowell Sun. She was first introduced to the game's canine genocide while watching her college aged brother playing. "My little 12-pound Pomeranian, Winnie the Pooh, is sitting next to him, and I'm thinking, 'This looks horrible!'" Although she's sure her brother "won't be killing dogs after playing," she believes "some people might."
Lucci plans to forward her petition, which has been signed by more than 100 of her fellow students, to Activision. Contrary to some petitions aimed at game publishers, hers is simply a show of disgust, and does not call for any executives to be fired, boiled alive or hung by their feet until dead. You go, girl.
