In a quest to end the bitterness between the Xbox 360 and the color red, Microsoft appears to be reconciling the two in a new Xbox 360 Elite SKU. The unannounced product has stumbled into the public eye much in the same way that many of Microsoft's secrets do -- first a rumor, then a retailer inventory listing and then an innocent mention in a New Zealand-bound press release.
Alright, maybe that last one doesn't quite adhere to the formula, but according to Kotaku, an MS New Zealand promotion for the upcoming release of Halo Wars -- buy a 360, get a free copy of the game! -- explicitly excluded "the Red Xbox 360 Elite console which is exclusive to EB games." You know, that one that hasn't been announced, and that certainly won't be announced "at this time."
Though mention of the system has been stricken from the online version of the press release, we'd be immensely disappointed if the system, whether tied to Resident Evil 5 or not, failed to make an appearance. We can't let all these Red Rig of Death jokes go to waste!

DICE and Electronic Arts today announced that Mirror's Edge is getting a host of new time trial maps, all of which are available today on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The pack of nine new maps take Faith outside of the city, away from the cops, and into an entirely new world where time is the only opponent. The time trials are available for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Microsoft has made a radical departure from its traditional stance of refusing to comment on rumour and speculation, instead telling Eurogamer: "We have nothing to announce at this time."
The statement came in response to a query about rumours about a new red Xbox 360. As reported by Kotaku, a reference to the red version recently appeared on an email sent to retailers and press in New Zealand.
Eurogamer contacted Microsoft about the email, fully expecting the stock response, "We do not comment on rumour or speculation."
However, reporters were left shocked and stunned when the platform holder instead replied, "We have nothing to announce at this time."
It's not the first time Microsoft has had nothing to announce at this time. Back in August 2005, when Eurogamer reported that Xbox 360 was due to launch on November 25th, Microsoft said it had nothing to announce at that time. As it transpired, Eurogamer was completely wrong.
More recently Microsoft has tended to favour "We do not comment on rumour or speculation" as its preferred response. In the past few months alone the company has declined to comment on rumour and speculation regarding GoldenEye XBLA, Mass Effect Special Edition, seven price cuts and a Quantum of Solace hardware bundle, to name just some of literally thousands of examples.
Microsoft has declined to comment on whether it will continue to follow the "We have nothing to announce at this time" line in future, simply stating, "We do not comment on rumour or speculation."

EA and DICE will finally release the seven new Time Trial maps for Mirror's Edge today.
These will be available on PC and Xbox 360 for 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60), or on PS3 for seven pounds. PS3 owners, remember, have already been treated an extra and free Time Trial map for Mirror's Edge. You lucky devils.
The extra Time Trial maps are a floating clusters of primary-coloured platforms presenting myriad of speedy routes to the end of the level. And, by doing away with the cheesy story and flimsy combat, the pure and athletic joy of Mirror's Edge can flourish.
Head over to Eurogamer TV for a rather lovely look at the new levels.
Mirror's Edge will be turned into a hand-crafted, animated, old-school platform game tomorrow. Fancy Pants creator Brad Borne is behind the project, and his website, which currently displays "Stay Tuned...", is the place to keep an eye on.

Monday, June 1st, 10:30AM PST. That, dear readers, is when Microsoft's E3 2009 Media Briefing is due to take place in Los Angeles. The Redmond giant has politely asked us to save the date on our electronic calendars, but since reaching June requires like four clicks or something, we'll just make a note of it here. On our website.
You'll remind us when all that E3 malarkey kicks off, right? We suppose you'll want us to write a few lines about it, so don't forget to play your part.

Robot Entertainment, a new Texan game developer created by many of the original founders of Ensemble Studios, has confirmed that it is working on downloadable content for Halo Wars.
The newly minted company, headed up by Ensemble founder Tony Goodman, will also "support online gaming and community for both Age of Empires and Halo Wars", according to its press release.
"Additionally, Robot is developing its own original IP." This has led to speculation that an unannounced, former Ensemble project has made the transition as well, although there's nothing to suggest that in Robot's press release.
"The video game industry is in a state of upheaval," Goodman said, "not just games, but the entire landscape. Everything is changing: where we buy games, how we buy games, how much we pay, how long we play, who we play them with.
"As a fast-moving independent team of game developers, industry leaders and market experts, Robot Entertainment is ideally positioned to play a transformative role in the industry's future."
The news that Robot will support Halo Wars expands on comments made by Microsoft-based producer Jason Pace in an interview with Eurogamer last month.
"Ensemble is, as I'm sure you know, forming a new company, and they will be helping us support the title moving forward, so: bug patches, any kind of fixes - we'll have all those folks available to work on it," he said, so we can probably also expect our old euphemistic friends the 'title updates' to venture forth from Robot as well.
In the aftermath of Ensemble's closure, announced last September, Microsoft quickly added that it still owned the Age of Empires IP, traditionally developed by Ensemble. Whether Robot's involvement with that goes beyond "online gaming and community" support remains to be seen.

via Games Industry
Microsoft is investigating a serious system design flaw in its Xbox Live accounts system which is leaving some active Xbox 360 gamers with no choice but to start afresh with new Gamertags, deleting any achievements they may have accumulated in the past four years.
The problem stems from the Windows Live ID email address that's required to set up a Gold membership, and specifically those which are automatically set to expire after a period of inactivity, such as Hotmail.
If a user allows their Windows Live ID email to expire - perhaps because they use an alternative such as Gmail on a day-to-day basis - the email account is deleted, along with any Gamertag that may be associated with it, even if the user has set up additional non-Hotmail addresses in the meantime.
A Microsoft customer services representative confirmed the problem, apologising and adding: "The only alternative is to set up a new Gamertag with your preferred email address."
She added that there was no way around the problem, and that any achievement points gained were non-transferable, and would therefore be lost - despite any user affected still having an accurate, up-to-date profile existing on their own Xbox 360 hard drive.
GamesIndustry.biz has confirmed the problem exists with a relatively small percentage of users, and while the issue does not prevent gamers from playing offline with a Silver membership, it will prevent them from upgrading at any time to Gold status, effectively blocking any ongoing online multiplayer activity - one of the facets which made the service so popular in the first place.
Downloads from the Live Marketplace appear unaffected by the issue, which can be diagnosed via a '8015d080' error code when any new subscription attempt is made.
UPDATE: Microsoft issued this statement in response to a request for comment on the problem: "We are investigating this issue and don't have any further comment to make right now. Any consumer with any issues regarding their Xbox 360 or Xbox Live account should visit xbox.com/support or call their country's customer support number."

Contextually appropriate character idiosyncrasy, or questionably shaped carrot dangled in front of the gaming press? Either way, Rockstar's latest addition to the Grand Theft Auto franchise -- one of controversy's more intimate acquaintances -- roasts yet another wiener on the fiery debate over mature content in games. Though we're certain most players were expecting a fair amount of dicks in The Lost and Damned's cast, the presence of a penis may come as a surprise.
The folks at 1UP (NSFW) have captured the scene between protagonist Johnny Klebitz and massage-loving exhibitionist Mr. Stubbs in all its full frontal glory. If you're going to watch it, be prepared to have an important thought rushing to your head: Is Rockstar cheekily pushing our beloved medium forward, or simply erecting another financially beneficial controversy trap?
We're inclined to think that IT'S A TRAP.

Those of you who have experienced issues with your Xbox 360s will probably be happy to know that Microsoft's been working hard to improve its console repair service.
"We've improved that [repair] process," said Xbox group product manager Aaron Greenberg, when questioned by Edge about 360s refurbished by Microsoft going on to fail multiple times after being repaired.
He also said that 360s sent in for repair are often fitted with the most up to date technology.
"...What we do in general, the way that it works, is that they will fix it with the latest [hardware] improvements that we've applied [to current Xbox 360s]. Obviously we're continuously improving the technology inside the box, not to get too technical. So they'll apply that when they make the increments to your system."
The exec also reckons that improvements to the console's design process should mean the company can finally put the Red Ring of Death issue to bed.
"What it comes down to is isolating and figuring out the issue, fixing the issue, and the more that we can fix the issue, and know it's fixed, then we're good going forward. We've put the worst behind us on this, but we know there are a few lagging systems, and so we want to take those and make it right."
It's just as well the console has had such a great game library since launch, otherwise...

via Eurogamer
BioWare has said the next downloadable addition to Mass Effect will be a Fight Club-style arena. Expect less of a focus on story, and more on gambling and good old-fashioned dust-ups.
"We had something in Mass Effect 1 that again, we weren't able to pull off just because we didn't have the time and we didn't think we'd be able to do it well enough, which was a fight club or an arena. So we're actually working on that for our next downloadable content piece and we're hoping it'll be really special," said BioWare's Preston Watamaniuk. He was speaking in a documentary bundled with Mass Effect Platinum Hits and leaked to YouTube (thanks, Joystiq).
"We wanted to be able to give people a much more combat-oriented, lighter-story experience," added Mass Effect project director Casey Hudson. "You're going to go to a kind of casino gaming fight club space station."
BioWare has previously used arenas in both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. There's no word on when the content will be available for Mass Effect.
BioWare boss Ray Muzyka went on to stress the importance of post-release content for Mass Effect as a series.
"Mass Effect, like I said earlier, is this big toy box; this enormous galaxy with millions of stars and planets to explore and we can select the interesting ones and develop them out and continue the storyline as we did with the Batarian race in Bring Down the Sky," he said.
"From a franchise perspective it's going to help fill in the gaps and understanding and continue certain plotlines and develop other certain types of gameplay. And really we'll try and customise it and build other types of post-release downloadable content to different play-patterns and to suit different types of players."
Casey Hudson said players will also be able to carry characters from Mass Effect 1 over into subsequent instalments in the series, making post-release content more appealing.
As for news on Mass Effect 2, Hudson suggested we'll be looking at a "much darker experience" that touches on different themes to the first game.
"In the second game you're actually going to go through a darker period where you're really looking for answers; it's a lot harder to find what the realities are, and there are a lot of twists and turns and it's generally a much darker experience," he said.
Preston Watamaniuk added: "We are going to continue on other themes such as technology: what does it mean to be alive? How does synthetic life or intelligence compare to real-, true-life or organic life? How do you cross those boundaries, can we cross those boundaries, should we cross those boundaries? We really want to push into that direction."
Watamaniuk explained that BioWare wants to make player decisions span across the entire Mass Effect trilogy, too, otherwise there would be no point including them.
Mass Effect 2 is due for release by April 2010, and on multiple platforms. BioWare hasn't yet explained whether that includes PS3.

"Rhetoric is the art of ruling the minds of men," according to some old dead Greek guy who took a fatal swig of hemlock. The latest attempt to massage our brainwaves with persuasive oratory comes from Sony Chairman Kazuo Hirai, who reportedly told CVG the Xbox 360 "lacks longevity" and that the PlayStation 3 will eventually pull ahead.
Not to be outdone, Microsoft Director of Product Management Aaron Greenberg responded in kind to The BitBag, accusing Sony of being too "comfortable," "complacent," and focused on "hardware specs."
But Greenberg goes one further, really laying it down:
With a U.S. install base lead now of more than 7 million units (according to NPD), I can’t imagine any scenario where the PS3 can catch up with us. In fact, even if you doubled the current PS3 sales and Xbox 360 remained flat, they couldn’t close the gap until 2014.
Read that again: "Couldn't close the gap until 2014." Five years from now, and two past analyst predictions for when we'll see the next round of hardware.
No one's arguing Sony's got its work cut out with Microsoft leading by more than 2-to-1 in U.S. hardware sales.
Then again, Sony's leading 3-to-1 in Japan, and they're right behind Microsoft in cumulative system sales everywhere else.
The question is, what happens if Sony drops the PS3's price by $100 in the near term?
Would a $300 game machine with Blu-ray to boot and exclusives like God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, inFamous, MAG, Uncharted 2, and DC Universe Online tip your hand?

A listing for a red-colored Xbox 360 Elite has made itself known, thanks to a Toys "R" Us employee who sent Kotaku a snapshot of the SKU, which allegedly appears in the store's inventory database. The red Elite's "item inquiry detail" makes note of the console's $399 price tag (which is the current cost of a black Elite), but no other product details are mentioned. It's speculated that this red'licious console could be the mysterious Resident Evil 5 bundle.
If true, consumers will have another Xbox 360 color option to express their individuality. It would also make creating a Hello Kitty mod much easier.
