Xbots, arm up! You've just received a new salvo of ammo for your ongoing crusade against those Sony Cronies: Xbox Live has generated a lot more money than PSN, according to Variety's math. (Of course, dear Xbox Fanboy, let us remind you that this victory comes at the expense of your wallet.) Variety did some quick estimations based on Sony's recent 20 million registrations announcement and Microsoft's reported earnings from Xbox Live. PSN has generated $180 million for Sony, whereas Xbox Live has made Microsoft a tidy sum in excess of $1 billion.
PSN, which includes both PS3 and PSP users, has been active for 40 percent of Xbox Live's current lifespan, however, Sony's service has only managed to generate 20 percent as much revenue. Of course, PSN is free, so registrations don't generate any revenue for Sony, unlike Xbox Live, which costs $50 per year for a premium, Gold subscription. It's not known how much of Xbox Live's total revenue is attributed to Gold subscribers' annual fees.

A new Call of Duty: World at War multiplayer map has just been made available to download via Xbox Live.
Previously released for PC, it's the daytime version of the 'Makin' map. It's 69 MB in size and it's free, although Major Nelson says it's a Gold membership exclusive offer.
"The tide is out and the sun is high - this daytime version of Makin sheds new light on the battle!" reads the description.
The bonus map, which is set in Japan (but isn't available to download in Japan, which seems a bit tight to us), isn't part of the previously announced upcoming downloadable map pack, which will feature three new maps and an additional level for the Nazi zombie co-op mode.

Looks like Xbox 360 owners will get to eat more worms, as Australia's classification body has rated Worms Armageddon Decade, a release that appears to be a Live Arcade remake of the ten-year-old strategy title.
While XBLA already has one Worms release, now about two-years-old, Worms Armageddon Decade represents a highlight for the series. The original Worms Armageddon landed on the Dreamcast, PlayStation, Nintendo 64 and PC in 1998. Un-fun fact: it's the only Worms game I own.
As GamerBytes points out, it's quite possible that Decade is a Live Arcade "exclusive."

Despite being first spotted on the ESRB's leak-prone website nearly two years ago, and officially confirmed at QuakeCon over 18 months ago, id's John Carmack assures us that Pi Studios – developers behind the Xbox Live Arcade release of classic multiplayer shooter Quake 3 Arena – is "actually very close to finishing that up." He didn't identify any specific reasons for the delay, but said that the developer had "different things come up at different times" like having to "shift people onto different projects."
With Quake Live finally opening its doors to the public today, we asked if the two development teams – at both Pi and id Software – shared any insights into updating the FPS staple. Quake Live producer Marty Stratton said they shared "where it's made sense" – think "gameplay changes," "some ... new content," and some "new character skins" but not the newer, "more PC-centric" arenas. If they can get the finished game in front of Microsoft "within a month or two" like Carmack estimates, we may get multiple Quake 3 fixes within the year.
Check back later today for our full interview with id's John Carmack and Marty Stratton.

As for entertainment and television, Ballmer said there was a "real opportunity" for Microsoft to have or to provide software for a device that sits next to or in every television set. Specifically, he said that the company's Zune music software, which is already available on the PC and on the company's Zune music players, would be coming to the phone as well as the television."
It's a shame that no one bothered to ask Steve Ballmer exactly what he meant by this statement - we've heard rumours about the Zune software interface coming to Windows Mobile, but coming to television? That's the first I've heard of it. My guess, based on nothing more than a gut feeling, is that this is in reference to an Xbox 360 interface - a version of the Zune desktop software that's optimized for use on the Xbox. And I think it will be a welcome addition if they create it, because the "directory dump" method of displaying music that the Xbox 360 uses today is certainly quite simplistic.

Teresa says that she was harassed by other players and later suspended from XBOX Live because she identified herself as a lesbian in her profile. When she appealed to Microsoft, she says they told her that other gamers found her sexual orientation "offensive."
Teresa says:
I just recently saw a thing on your site about someones gamer tag being banned because it had the word gay in the tag.
I had a similar incident, only my account was suspended because I had said in my profile that I was a lesbian. I was harassed by several players, 'chased' to different maps/games to get away from their harassment. They followed me into the games and told all the other players to turn me in because they didn't want to see that crap or their kids to see that crap.
As if xbox live is really appropriate for kids anyways! My account was suspended and xbox live did nothing to solve this, but instead said others found it offensive.
Today I received a message from another gamer calling me a ***. I am a lesbian, so they aren't too smart if they cant get their anti-gay slurs right.
Microsoft does nothing to stop this or prevent it, but instead sides with the homophobes. No one will help me get the word out about Microsoft's anti-gay policy. Not even the HRC who says Microsoft has a positive image with them. Not to me it doesn't!
We've heard of gamers being suspended for identifying themselves as gay in their GamerTag, and even one case of a guy whose name was actually "Richard Gaywood" but his tag was suspended anyway because apparently the word "gay" is so offensive that it doesn't matter if its actually your name.
As far as we know, Microsoft is unwilling to reconsider this position.

Capcom has said Lost Planet 2 will feature full campaign co-op support for up-to four people.
The Lost Planet 2 reveal trailer hinted at this yesterday; we saw one player deploy an expanding cover shield, which allowed two uniquely-outfitted helpers to fire rockets and supporting rounds from safety.
The sequel's story is spun 10-years after the adventures of Wayne in Lost Planet 1, and so lots has changed: vast slabs of ice have melted, and given way to vibrant jungles and other environments.
Players will make their own heroes this time, too - not settle for some silky-haired pouter. However, we're not sure what sort of customisation options there will be, nor whether they will affect abilities.
Grappling will return, and Capcom has some extra actions to spring on us at a later date. Also, the ranks of the alien and insect-like Akrid army have expanded.
There's no word on VS (Vital Suit) mechs, but they feature in the video and so are presumably as destructive and consumptive of T-ENG fuel as in the original game. Multiplayer versus modes are also kept under wraps.
We're also none-the-wiser as to platforms and dates. We expect Capcom will stay multiplatform and gun for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. (UPDATE: It's worth mentioning the latest press release only states that Lost Planet 2 is in development for 360, so it could well be a platform exclusive - but Capcom has yet to confirm.)
Capcom does promise that fan feedback has been heavily taken onboard. We know Lost Planet 2 will be the publisher's first title to use MT Framework 2 technology, too.
We're quite excited; Lost Planet 1 was often spectacular when devastating mechs took on swarms of Akrid or screen-filling bosses. Bit it all turned out to be a bit skin-deep, as the plot turned cheesy, combat plateaued and climactic encounters resorted to by-the-book weak-spots.
Worth a bash, though, as our Lost Planet: Extreme Condition review points out.

It turns out yesterday's rumour of a Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram re-release is absolutely true, and the Dreamcast and arcade Sega mech fighter will be resurrected on Xbox Live Arcade.
According to the latest issue of Famitsu, the 360 release will be Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram version 5.66, the final release for Sega's NAOMI arcade platform, released in 2000 (arcade nerds care, alright?)
The game, in case you've no idea what we're on about, is a much-loved, lightning fast mech fighter played with a dual-joystick set-up.
The XBLA release is slated for April, says the mag, and it's already been priced at 1200 Microsoft Points (£10).

Rockstar has said that the South Central DLC for Midnight Club: Los Angeles will launch on 12th March.
Available on Xbox 360 and PS3, the content expands the game-map by roughly a third and is completely free.
There's also a premium South Central Content Pack that has plenty of new competitions, races, cars and music to enjoy. A US press release cites a price of USD 9.99, which we suppose would equate to 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).
The South Central content was accidentally leaked earlier this month; a blooper Microsoft later apologised for.
Fast-eyed and fast-fingered observers noticed a couple of premium vehicle packs added simultaneously, although there's no word on them here. All of the leaked South Central content was removed.

Over half of the Xbox 360's online userbase pays a Gold subscription to play online, claim statistics from the Seattle PI.
Citing an internal Microsoft document dating between February and June 2008, the report claims that 56 percent of worldwide Xbox Live members paid a Gold subscription at the beginning of last year.
The figure is apparently down from 60% at the same time the year before, which isn't bad if you expect the number of people with Xbox 360s has undoubtedly gone up.
While the figures don't reach into 2009 - or even go past the launch of the New Xbox Experience - the percentage of paying Xbox Live members apparently stayed steady up until its announcement in June 2008.
Expectedly, the highest percentage of Gold subscribers is in the US, where the number stays flat at around 60%.
Speaking in an e-mail statement, Microsoft said: "We've said before that Xbox Live is experiencing incredible growth; in January we had more new Live members join than any other month in the history of Xbox Live.
"With more than 17 million active members, a majority of whom are paying members, Live is a rich social entertainment and gaming experience that is unmatched in the industry."
