Microsoft will put its Zune and Xbox brands at the heart of its next-generation Windows Mobile OS, according to a seemingly well-sourced story on tech-site PPCGeeks.
It suggests that Windows Phone 7 - as it'll be known - will make its public debut on 15th February at Mobile World Congress.
It's described as sporting a user interface similar to Microsoft's Zune devices, but with no multi-tasking for applications.
However, from an entertainment perspective, the claim that Microsoft's Zune platform will handle all the media playback and syncing on the device is interesting.
Meanwhile, the story also claims that WinPho 7 (as we probably have to call it now) will support full Xbox gaming integration, including gamer tags, achievements, friend lists and avatars.

Gamestop captured the back of Final Fantasy XIII’s Xbox 360 box, which has bullet points about the game’s features.
Let’s see… it supports one player, saves take up 4MB, and apparently has “game-content download.” Interesting! That sounds like confirmation that Final Fantasy XIII will have some kind of downloadable content. I hope we get something better than Cloud costumes for Lightning and emergency potion packs.

Earlier today, Microsoft announced that it was pulling the plug on Xbox Live support for original Xbox games. That obviously includes Bungie's Halo 2, consistently the top original Xbox title represented on Live. Bungie responds to the change.
"We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back," the developer writes on its official web site, "we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans." Amid plenty of thanks and well wishes, there's an obvious choking back of tears.
Bungie notes with a stiff upper lip that it intends to send off Halo 2 with a bang. Or "one last hoorah," in their words. Halo 2 holdouts should book April 14 as a day to play, as Bungie promises "One final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2."

We've had a pretty clear indication that Microsoft would have plenty to say about Windows Mobile 7 at MWC this month, and it looks like we now have the first significant batch of rumored details ahead of the presumed launch. While nothing is close to being confirmed just yet, PPCGeeks has received what it describes as some "truly amazing information" about what's now apparently known as Windows Phone 7, and it certainly paints an interesting picture. According to the site, Windows Phone 7 will sport an interface that's "very similar" to the Zune HD, along with a complete revamp of the start screen, and a UI (codenamed METRO) that's described as "very clean," "soulful," and "alive." Perhaps just as notably, the OS supposedly won't support multitasking, with applications instead simply pausing themselves when in the background (there will be support for push notifications, though). Also missing is Flash support (at least initially), as well as NETCF backwards compatibility for older applications, although there are apparently "high hopes" for porting NETCF to the new platform eventually.
On the upside, the OS is said to have full Xbox gaming integration (including gamertags, avatars and, yes, achievements), full Zune integration, full support for social networking, and a try before you buy system in the Marketplace. What we apparently won't be seeing at MWC, however, is any Windows Phone 7 hardware, as the announcement is said to focus solely on the user interface. According to PPCGeeks, however, Microsoft is confident that the first hardware will be ready by September of this year. Hit up the link below for the complete rundown.
Update: MobileTechWorld looks to have also received the same batch of rumors, and has revealed a few more, including word that the browsing experience is currently "better / faster" than the iPhone 3G, and that Microsoft is "aiming towards" the 3GS. They also say that while there will be no Microsoft-made device, the company will have tighter control of the manufacturing process, which promises to simplify things for everyone involved and allow for over-the-air updates

Not all Monster Hunter games make it outside of Japan. The Wii port of Monster Hunter G, for example, was passed over, as was Monster Hunter Frontier, the PC MMO upon which the upcoming Xbox 360 game is based. That's why it's noteworthy that Capcom's Keiji Inafune told Famitsu (according to Andriasang's translation) that "I feel Monster Hunter can definitely succeed overseas. There's a high possibility that MHF will kickstart that." For such a kickstart to take place, the game would have to be released overseas.
Unless, of course, it's already kickstarted by Monster Hunter Tri, coming out in North America and Europe this April, right?

Microsoft announced tonight that online play for original Xbox consoles and titles - including those played on an Xbox 360 - over its Xbox Live service will soon be discontinued.
The axe will fall on April 15, and will bring an end to years of online play for games like Halo 2 and...whatever other original Xbox games people still play these days.
With this being 2010, it's not really that big a surprise, but Microsoft's explanation for the move certainly raises an eyebrow or two. Xbox Live's Larry Hryb writes:
I wanted to let you know that on April 15, 2010 Microsoft will discontinue Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox 1 games playable on Xbox 360. Our first step in this process will be to turn off auto-renewals for those members who only use Xbox LIVE on a v1 Xbox. While I can't comment on the specifics, this change will allow us to continue evolving the LIVE service with new features and experiences that fully harness the power of Xbox 360 and the Xbox LIVE community. We did not make this decision lightly, but after careful consideration and review we realize that this decision will allow us unprecedented flexibility for future features.
Wonder what it is they're adding to Live that made them boot original Xbox support? A bigger friends list, perhaps?

It's not exactly all that uncommon to see some music disappear from Zune Pass (or any other music service) due to rights issues and whatnot, but Microsoft's subscription service seems to have been hit with significantly more vanishing acts than usual as of late, which has resulted in a sizable number of complaints from users. In some cases, that includes all the music from some artists (Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, and Spoon, to name a few), while others have seen only some albums, or some songs disappear. For its part, Microsoft's customer service seems to be telling folks that any music no longer available is due to the record labels pulling it, but the reports from users seem to suggest there's little rhyme or reason about what's been pulled. So, any Zune Pass users out there missing some of their favorite tunes?

BioWare has said that it can't do anything to bump up the text size in Mass Effect 2 to placate struggling SDTV owners, but that it will try to avoid the problem next time.
"We understand that on some Standard Definition TVs the smallest text in Mass Effect 2 can be difficult to read. While this was not an intentional result, it was a byproduct of enhancements to the user interface," BioWare's Michael Gamble wrote on the official forum.
"After investigating potential solutions, we have determined that while this issue does affect a small portion of SDTV owners, we are unable to resolve it for Mass Effect 2 through a title update.
"However, we have taken note of this issue and will take it into consideration as we plan future games in the Mass Effect franchise."
Small text has been an issue in games before, most notably Dead Rising and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts - although the latter ended happily with an SDTV patch after release.

Ubisoft has said that Splinter Cell: Conviction will be released in the US on 13th April.
Well, that's not entirely true - Ubisoft has sent stones with "4.13.10" written on them to US journalists.
Apparently the stones were unable to comment on a European release date, so we've contacted Ubisoft for clarification.
But US retailers agree with their domestic stones on the 13th April date, so we would imagine a European slot the same week: probably 16th April.
Ubisoft has previously confirmed an April release for the game following the latest of many delays.

One of Xbox Live's most-requested features, the raising of the 100-friend cap, could be about to happen as Microsoft's unveils plans to discontinue the Original Xbox's online service.
Microsoft's gone on record in the past that the Xbox 360 friend cap is mostly down to backwards compatibility with the old console. Now that's not an issue, the platform holder's seemingly free to let us expand our mate roster.
Xbox group product manager, Aaron Greenberg said of raising the cap back in 2007: "There's some interdependencies. Some things like original Xbox games have friends lists hard coded in, so there's things we gotta work through, but we'll get it figured out, it's something we want to do."
He then updated us on the feature last year: "I can't commit to when that will happen, but that is something we want to do," he said. "It's definitely something we're looking at expanding and, as this social network grows, we've absolutely heard the pleas for that. It's on the list."
Possibly good news for popular people like those OXM chaps then, but the average Xbox Live user surely has about 20 friends anyway?

Publisher pledges to make release of FFXIII to be a "true event"
Millions of pounds will be spent on the marketing campaign for Final Fantasy XIII, MCV understands.
The publisher plans to make the game’s launch “a true event” with a heavyweight TV campaign that will kick off on March 1st and run through Easter and into April, including spots during football matches.
“We aim to make Final Fantasy XIII not only the biggest game release, but one of the biggest entertainment releases of Q1,” said UK product manager Grant Tasker.
Square Enix has also arranged its biggest ever investment in video-on-demand media, and expects its national bus-side advertising to reach an estimated 75 per cent of the UK’s population.
Final Fantasy XIII will hit 360 and PS3 on March 9th.

Xbox Live for the original Xbox console will be discontinued on April 15, Microsoft's confirmed.

Speaking to CVG, MotoGP lead designer Greg Bryant discussed the future of the series on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Bryant said the development team plans to incorporate Natal support into MotoGP 10/11 in order to implement head tracking. According to Bryant, "the future for [Natal] is through head tracking in racing games." As for future iterations on the PS3, he noted that the team plans to use stereoscopic 3D and "theoretically" enable head tracking with the Playstation Eye.
Honestly, if it turns out anything like this, consider us stoked.

While at work, reader Mike got an email on his telephone from Xbox confirming his purchase of a LIVE Gold subscription. But Mike is an Xbox LIVE Silver Member. And he was out forty bucks.
"I called home, and jokingly told my wife that she had some explaining to do," says Mike. "She didn't know what I was talking about, so I asked if there were any purchases she might have made that I should know about." Mike thought maybe she bought it for him as a surprise. His wife, however, had no idea what he was talking about.
She did mention that their three year-old son had walked up to her with a powered-on Xbox controller asking her to play the "cars game" — Forza 3, that is.
"So it seems that my son turned on the Xbox with the controller, tapped the A button 3 times, and spent forty bucks," says Mike. "This is completely understandable since he knows how to turn it on, and the green button is about the only one he ever pushes when pretending to play games."
Microsoft, to its credit, was quick to offer a refund. And in order to avoid any future problems, Mike says he removed his credit card from his Xbox LIVE account.
"But I think it's pretty stupid that it's this simple for a 3 year old to make such a large purchase," says Mike. "Why on earth does my Xbox default to that upgrade offer anyway?"
Money, Mike, to make money.
