The beta for the latest Halo title, Halo: Reach, will kick off on May 3rd, with guaranteed entry for Halo 3: ODST owners, ahead of the release this autumn.

Modern Warfare 2's first DLC pack will arrive in early April, a reliable source has told CVG.
The official word from Activision on the add-on pack's release - which will be an Xbox 360 timed exclusive - is that it's planned for "spring". Our source's claim would put its release bang in the middle of that season.
There's no word yet on what Modern Warfare players should expect in the first DLC pack, and last month community man Robert Bowling wasn't exactly bursting to enlighten us.
"We're still figuring out what the DLC will include, until we know for sure, I can't comment on what to expect yet," he said via Twitter. We're after more maps, simple as.
Activision was unavailable for comment.

Sony and Microsoft have revealed new online user stats, following both firm’s latest NPD results.
Microsoft say that the Live community has grown to 23 million – both Gold and Silver users – marking a high rate of Live adoption from the 39 million 360 consoles sold worldwide.
Sony, meanwhile, says that it has clocked over 40 million PSN accounts, coming from a mixture of 33.5 million PS3 owners and 56 million PSP units sold.
Speaking on his PlayStation blog, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said the rise in PSN came with a 155% jump in digital sales between 2008-2009.
Sony recently fuelled rumours that the PSN service will implement subscription charges.
Microsoft added that 2.3 million Live users logged into Xbox Live over January – a new record for the platform holder.

We're devoted fans of the Ars Technica mole, who has nailed big stories like the PS3 Slim and the Resident Evil 5 bundle. As a result, we feel pretty comfortable getting excited about two new Xbox 360 bundles Ars highlights today. The first, a Splinter Cell: Conviction-themed bundle, will reportedly include a not-in-any-way-branded system packing a 250GB hard drive, two black controllers and the game, all for $400. The other bundle will, according to Ars, have all the same specs except with Final Fantasy XIII and white controllers.
Considering the the mole's track record, we wouldn't be surprised to see an official announcement any day now.

Retailers have started listing a Limited Collector's Edition of Alan Wake, possibly in advance of an official announcement later today at Microsoft's X10 event. Both Best Buy and Wal-Mart have listings for the item, with an $80 price tag and a May 25 release date.
Wal-Mart's listing actually includes the image seen here, and details the contents of the set: a linen case "designed to resemble a hardcover book" (is this game a book or a TV show?), a 144-page book with a story written by Alan Wake and FBI dossiers included, a soundtrack disc, a token for the first DLC pack, and a disc with an Xbox Live theme and avatar.

With Microsoft's X10 event underway in San Francisco, the company has finally announced the first details surrounding the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta. The beta test will officially begin on May 3, 2010. As promised, owners of Halo 3: ODST will be able to access the beta through the ODST game disc. There is no word yet on how the general public will get a crack at the beta (or if they will at all, for that matter). Details on what to expect in the beta also haven't been released yet. We'll update this post if we get any new information.

A person writes in to UK Daily Star sex advice columnist Just Jane. He's got some problems. He's dodging the consequences by playing Xbox. Jane says that's no good.
The problem: He was caught having sex with his boss' secretary in the boardroom, was fired, can't get the courage to confess any of this to his girlfriend, and so he pretends to go to work each morning but instead just goes to a friend's house and plays Xbox.
Really.
What would a professional advice columnist say to that?
JANE SAYS: Why waste time playing on your mate's game console when you could be out looking for another job?
As far as I can see you have only yourself to blame for this and you need to get a grip of the situation. You are burying your head in the sand and hoping the problem will go away.

February 11th, 2010, 21:18 Posted By: wraggster
Rockstar's 1940s crime thriller LA Noire may change how actors are captured and recreated in games for ever.
Developer Team Bondi is using groundbreaking technology developed by sister company Depth Analysis to capture all aspects of a performance at once - audio, visual and movement - and recreate them quickly and en-masse to characters in-game.
"Traditionally, one minute of facial animation could take a couple of animators a month. The idea is that we can mass-produce. We can produce about 20 minutes of final footage a day, and it's seamless - I don't even have character artists or animators working with me," Depth Analysis' Oliver Bao told Game Informer (via VG247).
Getaway creator and Team Bondi boss Brendan McNamara said even games like Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2 have characters that look like "goldfish" in comparison. And lip-synching is a problem no longer.
This time-consuming method has allowed McNamara to realise a 2000-page script that calls for performances by over 300 actors. When you consider that an average film is between 95 and 125 pages long, the scope of this game is staggering. Hollywood director Michael Uppendahl is on hand to help, and will direct stars like Aaron Staton.
And for LA Noire, this technology represents far more than bragging rights.
"It's obviously cool technology, but the key thing for us is that when you're interrogating someone, you can read their faces and tell if they're lying," said McNamara. "That is a key component of the gameplay."
Interrogation is a cornerstone of LA Noire. Evidence can be gathered at crime scenes and witnesses interrogated. Anything of interest will be recorded automatically in a notebook. Eventually, lead character Cole Phelps can sit down with suspects and challenge their statements, choosing between coax, accuse and force responses - like in Mass Effect 2, these options represent the general tone of your dialogue choice, not the words themselves.
The game of LA Noire follows Phelps through the ranks of the LAPD, where he'll progress from beat cop to the desks of traffic, vice, burglary and arson. Eventually he'll make it to homicide detective.
Along the way he'll have to work with different partners, and he'll come to realise that the force itself is filled with people that have far less than saintly dispositions.
"Who he is at the beginning is completely different from who he is at the end. There's a journey. In most games - even my old games - who someone is at the beginning is who they are at the end. You don't get that in movies or literature - people change. We want you to go on a journey with him. We're trying to pull that off," McNamara explained.
LA Noire's painstakingly recreated world of 1947 Los Angeles is another talking point. It's the biggest and most detailed areas Rockstar has ever made - and Rockstar makes some big and detailed worlds (GTAIV). Over 180,000 photographs of post-war Los Angeles were sourced and scanned, producing a city as accurately recreated as is humanly possible.
What's more, 90 per cent of the crimes in the game are based on real capers of the time. And they're far from slapstick romps.
"Some of them were too wild to use," realised McNamara. "One was about a preacher walking down Broadway with a bullwhip, whipping non-believers. [Laughs] We thought that was a great story, but we didn't know how to work it in.
"There was a guy in Santa Monica who was driving a four-engine plane down the street at midnight. He had an accident because he didn't have lights on the plane - if you came up with that in a design meeting, people would throw you out!"
LA Noire is in development for PS3 and Xbox 360 and will be released this autumn. That's the plan.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be supported by day-one downloadable content in line with EA's Project Ten Dollar plan.
Senior producer Patrich Bach from developer DICE toed the new line in an interview with WorthPlaying.
"We have an in-game store where you get free content or you can buy new content to the game, so it's a very integral part of the game that we will have a long post-launch campaign," he said.
"I think people will be thrilled to see what's in that already. On day one, you will get some really cool stuff."
Last month DICE executive producer Karl Magnus Troedsson said that the game would provide "a good bit of stuff for free", as well as paid DLC.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is due out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 5th March.

Activision's revealed a March multiplayer beta for Bizarre Creations' new driving game Blur.
Mike Griffith told Activision inquisitors as much last night during an earnings call, but offered no further details about when the testing will begin.
"In March, we planned to launch a multiplayer beta that will enable media and consumers to sample how fun the multiplayer experience is and we're very excited about this title and believe that it delivers a level of competition not seen before in a racing game," said Griffith.
Germany's age-rating board USK blew the whistle on the demo last month. Mind you, only an Xbox 360 sampler was mentioned and there's been no clarification on PC or PS3 offerings since then.
Blur was delayed earlier this year to an unspecified point in 2010. Griffith mentioned that Blur would be a second quarter (calendar) 2010 game, which means any time after April. And he's quite excited.
"The racing genre is large and we have a distinctive and compelling proposition. Blur blends the fun and power ups like those in Mario Kart with the realism core gamers appreciate with real cars and real locations. The result, the unique combination that beyond its single player mode redefines competitive online racing action in a way that genre has never experienced," he spewed.

Raven Software's new time-bending shooter Singularity will be with us in June.
The date tumbled out of Activision boss Mike Griffith's gob during a post-earnings conference call with investors last night. Well, he said "May" and then a spokesperson for the publisher told Joystiq "June".
That "May" date, however, also applies to the new Transformers game subtitled War of the Cybertron.
This, you'll remember, is in no way linked with a Michael Bay money-splash Transformers film. Developer High Moon Studios will instead look to the old television series for inspiration, both in terms of plot and visual style.

Microsoft has said that it's attempting to restore downloadable content access for people still playing Xbox 1 games.
"We are aware that Xbox v1 users are currently unable to access downloadable content via Xbox Live, both for the original console and Xbox Originals on Xbox 360," the company told Joystiq.
"The team is actively working on resolving this issue so that the Xbox v1 community can continue downloading content until April 15."
Earlier this month the company announced that it was terminating Xbox 1 support through Xbox Live on that date, but DLC and multiplay were still supposed to work until then.
In an open letter to gamers Microsoft's Marc Whitten said the change was being made to help "evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360", potentially including support for more than 100 friends.
Bungie has said it plans to give Halo 2 "one last hoorah" on 14th April, and is cooperating with Microsoft to try and solve the DLC issue, which affects the game a fair bit.

Black Inc adds more direct control system and adds new features
Ion Assault – the first German-made game to be released on Xbox Live Arcade – will undergo an automatic update as Cologne-based developer Black Inc looks to revise the title’s control system and add new features.
The top—down Geometry Wars-like shooter will offer more direct controls, with the Xbox’s right thumbstick now used to directly align the player’s ship.
And Black Inc have released a new gameplay mode to reflect the more immediate, rapid gameplay. A new high-score-based “survival mode” pits players against a rising tide of enemies, demanding faster reactions and greater stamina.
The game became Germany’s first CBLA title when released in September last year.

Bungie has called Halo: Reach its 'most powerful ever title' in an exclusive new Official Xbox Magazine feature.
The 10-page preview of the title, which appears in OXM 57 - on newsstands today - includes an extensive hands-on, as well as interviews with key Bungie figures.
Reach's creative director Marcus Lehto told the mag: "Halo Reach is probably the most powerful title we've built to date with regards to story, character, new gameplay features we're throwing at the player, and new experiences overall."
The article includes details of new NPCs - as well as beefed-up old ones, such as the marines that fight alongside you.
"The Halo 3 marine was nothing to write home about, so that was a serious kick in our pants to do something better," added Lehto.

Plans to disconnect Xbox Live services for original Xbox games have apparently already begun, as DLC servers for Xbox titles have been quietly taken offline. According to numerous forum threads and our own tests of an assortment of Xbox titles, attempts to download original Xbox game content are now fruitless. Each title tested yielded the message: "Could not download content list. Please try again later." (The image above was taken from our test of Halo 2.)
Last Friday, Microsoft announced online support for original Xbox titles would be discontinued on April 15, but made no mention of disconnecting DLC servers earlier than that. Some forum users claim that the DLC servers for Xbox titles were taken offline as soon as the announcement was made last week. So, if you've continued to put off your infiltration of the Kola Cell in the original Splinter Cell, you'd better have already downloaded the mission.

Square Enix has been surprisingly mum on plans to bring a limited edition of Final Fantasy XIII to North America. Japan gets one, as does Europe. What do we get? At the very least, an Xbox 360 "special edition" bundle.
According to a recent retail listing, Microsoft will be backing the role-playing game's launch with the Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle, featuring the same 250GB hard drive previously packaged in with the Modern Warfare 2 limited edition.
Unlike Japan's Final Fantasy XIII "Lightning Edition" PlayStation 3, which also shipped with a 250GB drive, it doesn't appear to feature an image of the game's heroine on the outside. According to the listing, this appears to be a stock Xbox 360, bundled with two Xbox 360 wireless controllers. (You know, for the splitscreen multiplayer portions...) The listing specifies black colored controllers and console casing, but the package is clearly "chill white."
The Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII Special Edition Bundle is listed for $399, a price that may not be final. Actually, none of this may be final. Neither Microsoft nor Square Enix have made any official announcements about this bundle, which recently appeared on a retailer training site.
We've reached out to Square Enix and Microsoft to see if they can summon some confirmation and if they have any plans at, say, this week's X10 event, to announce this bundle or a fancy collector's edition package.

Originally slated for release last November as Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny, the 11th game in SNK's weapons fighting franchise will be released this spring in North America as Samurai Shodown Sen for the Xbox 360.
We've been wondering about the fate of Samurai Shodown: Edge of Destiny ever since original North American publisher Ignition Entertainment missed the game's original November 2009 release date. Last month Rising Star Games announced a European release of the game this spring, and now XSEED has stepped forward to claim the title for North American release.
"We are thrilled to partner with XSEED Games on SAMURAI SHODOWN as we have much respect and admiration for their approach to creatively marketing games in North America," said Soichiro Hosoya, Company President of SNK PLAYMORE CORP. "Fans of the series will no doubt enjoy this next generation offering, so we look forward to working together to deliver a truly fun arcade fighting game that continues to deliver what the series has best been known for."
Samurai Shodown Sen is a 3D version of the series, featuring a host of classic characters doing battle both offline and via online multiplayer on the Xbox 360. It should be interesting to see how that pans out, now that we know it's actually on its way.

Acitivison Blizzard isn't going to let poor reviews of Tony Hawk Ride get them down. Sticking to its schedule of annual skateboard releases, the company announced today that it would release a new Tony Hawk game, using the board peripheral.
Activision CEO Mike Griffith said in an earnings call today that the new Tony Hawk game would be out in the back half of 2010. He acknowledged that the reception to Ride, the first Tony Hawk game to be controlled not with a traditional controller but with a skateboard-shaped controller that you stand on, was not good. "It took longer to optimizing the hardware, leaving less time to optimize the software," he said. In theory, that means that the developers of the new game will have more time to craft a good game around the board peripheral.
No further details were provided about the game.
While the Ride game was panned by critics, it's been vocally supported by skateboarder Tony Hawk himself, who has been credited with pushing for the board-as-controller concept.
