Growing publisher keeps it in house for sequel to Eidos's 2009 hit
Such was both the critical and commercial success of this year’s Batman: Arkham Asylum that the announcement of a sequel at last night’s VGA awards arguably overshadowed the reveal of even Bungie’s Halo Reach.
However, it will be Warner and not now Eidos owners Square Enix Europe that will publish Rocksteady’s sequel across the globe.
It's not a surprising move from Warner, which has been open about its aspirations in the games sector. With such a rich stable of IP in its pocket, it's understandable that it should want to try and do for games what its 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight did for movies.
“We are thrilled to build a global game franchise from Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is receiving an incredible response from gamers and Batman fans around the world,” Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president Martin Tremblay stated.
“Rocksteady has taken Batman to a new level in the video game space and we are committed to delivering a sequel the fans will love.”
Rocksteady Studios game director Safton Hill added: "Getting the opportunity to create Batman: Arkham Asylum and seeing its success has been a dream come true for the team.
"We are honoured to create the next chapter in this compelling story and promise to deliver another game worthy of the Dark Knight.”

The world's coolest Jedi, Samuel L. Jackson (suck it, Yoda) has just taken the stage at the 2009 Video Game Awards to reveal Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. In the announcement trailer -- Darth Vader's once apprentice -- codenamed "Starkiller" steps into a dark arena only to be faced with a creature hellbent on his destruction. Thankfully, Starkiller -- armed with two light sabers -- pounces to attack the gargantuan foe. Sadly, it was all CG, but we'll take any new Force Unleashed we can get.

Huzzah! No more of your intense Headquarters Pro matches will be interrupted by gargantuan, killer shockwaves expelled by morally dubious combatants. That is to say, Modern Warfare 2's Javelin glitch, which enabled a dirty, cheating player to instantly detonate upon death, was fixed earlier this morning by a patch for the Xbox 360 version of the game. According to a recent tweet from Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling, the PS3 version of the game has already received the patch.
In addition to removing the Javelin's unadvertised self-immolation feature, the patch also fixes the equally insidious "unlimited care packages" glitch, and fixes a few areas where players could exploit gaps in the game's geography. In a perfect world, Infinity Ward would have also sent parcels to the houses of anyone who leveraged these exploits -- parcels full of bees. The bad kind. The kind you see on the Discovery Channel. The ones that can kill a full-grown elephant with a surprisingly small swarm.

eep in mind: these figures are early and official numbers are forthcoming. On December 10, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 went on sale in Japan.
In a country traditionally dominated by role-playing-game, this American first-person-shooter actually is posting reasonably healthy first day sales — that is, for a Western FPS in Japan.
Early data has the Xbox 360 version of MW2 selling 42,000 copies while the PS3 version apparently sold 64,000 copies for a grand total of 106,000 copies of Modern Warfare 2 in Japan. That is low compared to what it did in the West, but extremely high for Japan. Generally speaking, Western games just do not sell 100,000 in Japan on their first day. Baby steps, folks, baby steps!
Other things to keep in mind: Some players have already bought the imported versions and others have been complaining about the localization job MW2 Japanese publisher Square Enix did.
In a recent interview, Square Enix president said that "youge-", the term used to separate Japanese games from foreign titles, has had a "terribly discriminatory meaning" in Japan.
If these numbers are correct, not bad Modern Warfare 2, not bad at all. Could this mean the Japanese gamer demographic is *gasp* changing?

Here are some screenshots Rare has been putting out throughout the week that compare the lovably fuzzy original N64 version of Perfect Dark to the spit-shined and sharpened XBLA remake that's due early next year.
You may recognise a couple of the shots, but now you can see how they stack up next to the Vaseline-covered original, and have a good look at Joanna Dark's new-age makeover, all looking very nice indeed.
Earlier this week Rare confirmed the game will be out in winter "early 2010". So not long to wait.

The massive success of Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 platform is primarily due to users preferring to play the multiplayer hit over Xbox Live rather than Sony's PlayStation Network.
That's according to Microsoft's David Dennis, who said that even though Live charges users a subscription fee compared to Sony's free equivalent, it's considered the better online gaming experience.
"Having an install base around 8 million more than the PS3 certainly helps - but the main factor is Xbox Live," said Dennis of the Xbox 360 SKU outselling the PS3 version by more than 2-to-1. "If you're considering a multiplatform game like that and you're going to want to play online, you're going to want to go to where your friends are and, let's face it, most people are playing on Xbox Live."
"Consumers have shown that if you can deliver value they're willing to pay for a subscription service, beyond just what multiplayer brings with an Xbox Live Gold subscription. With things like Facebook, Netflix, Twitter and Last.fm, we continue to drive more value into what a Gold subscription brings to the table.
"For a lot of people, paying [USD 50] a year for multiplayer is fine, but for a lot of people they want more, so we'll continue to add more to that. But for the cost of a latte, with the depth and richness of what Live brings, I think people absolutely see value in what Xbox Live delivers, he added.
Nintendo's Wii may have once again outsold the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in November, but Dennis believes that Live is more important for industry growth, as it allows third-party publishers to reach a wider audience than they can on the Wii.
"I would argue that having a platform that's as great for third parties as ours is a better long-term proposition and more supportive of the industry at large than just selling a lot of first-party games for your platforms.
"If you slice and dice the NPD numbers out and look at the largest games for Xbox and the competitors, obviously we'd have some great first-party games in the top ten or twenty. You'd have games like Halo and Gears [of War] and those types of experiences, but obviously you'd also have Call of Duty Modern Warfare 1, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty World at War, Left 4 Dead, Madden, Rock Band, Guitar Hero.
"What we're trying to do is build a platform and ecosystem on Xbox Live that helps third parties thrive and sell their games, and keep people coming back for more and engaged through downloadable songs, downloadable map packs, or non-gaming experiences that get people turning their consoles on every day."

December 11th, 2009, 10:30 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg reckons Halo: Reach will be king of the sales castle come the end of 2010 and has even dismissed competition from Gran Turismo 5.
"Is it launching next year?" he joked about the PS3-exclusive Polyphony Digital racer, speaking in an interview with Gamasutra.
"I've seen years and years of mini-games, but I haven't seen that the game is done. They just released the PSP version - maybe that's what they've been working on. I feel confident that there's nothing that will compare in size. Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010."
While a lot of console executives refrain from directly referring to the competition, Greenberg's happy to do so. Next year, he added, Xbox 360 will "continue to remain $100 cheaper than PS3", and it will "have more games, more blockbuster exclusives, no matter the genre".
One source of Greenberg's optimism, he said, is the ongoing success of third-party games on Xbox 360 relative to other formats. Indeed, according to the latest NPD figures for US sales, Modern Warfare 2 performed substantially better on 360 than PS3 despite the simultaneous release.
However, it's Sony who appears to be lining up the stronger first quarter of 2010, with MAG, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5 and God of war III all likely to hit before the end of March.
Microsoft can boast of a couple of exclusives - Splinter Cell: Conviction is only coming out on PC and Xbox 360, for example - but its earliest first-party exclusive is likely to be Alan Wake. Which we'd probably try to get out the door before we started poking fun at Gran Turismo's slippery release date, but y'know.

December 11th, 2009, 10:27 Posted By: wraggster
Representatives from Microsoft have responded to November's NPD numbers, reflecting on what the company is calling the best November in Xbox 360 history.
"November was an amazing month for Xbox 360 and sets us up for a great finish in the closing stretch of holiday 2009," said a statement released by the company today.
According to Microsoft, combined revenue for Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories for the month was USD 838 million, the highest grossing November in Xbox 360 history.
The Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.2 million units for the month, "outselling the competitive platform versions by more than two-to-one," said Microsoft. The title was one of four games for the Xbox 360 on the NPD's top ten list, the most of any other console.
"We’re off to a start this holiday and the best is yet to come this year and beyond," said Microsoft.

It looks like Activision's hopes for Tony Hawk: Ride are falling even faster than the average Tony Hawk: Ride player. IndustryGamers reports that this month's NPD numbers place the game at 114,000 copies sold across three platforms. Not that Activision is even paying attention to its own failure right now, distracted by the ridiculous success of its own Modern Warfare 2. This is the second disappointing month in a row for a big-box Activision game.
While we don't have a per-platform breakdown of the disappointing sales, a forecast released before today's NPD results estimated that just 13,000 copies sold on Xbox 360. All of this just confirms what we intuitively knew: skateboards without wheels just don't work.

Electronic Arts has called in another marketing airstrike against Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, hoping to pull members of its fanbase who're unhappy with its online play towards Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The previous target was dedicated servers for PC players; now it's Xbox Live party chat and the ability to use it in multiplayer.
Speaking with MTV Multiplayer, EA DICE producer Gordon Van Dyke stated, "We are ok with [party chat]. We haven't taken a stance being against it and feeling like people are cheating." Modern Warfare 2 only offers party chat support in a handful of its multiplayer playlists, ostensibly to curb cheating. But, according to Van Dyke, he doesn't "think [cheating with party chat is] that big of an issue, that I've seen, where we have to worry about that" in Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
So, is party chat (or the lack thereof) really that important to you? Share your thoughts in comments

December 10th, 2009, 14:33 Posted By: wraggster
After a bare-bones reveal on Monday, developer Visceral Games has fleshed out Dead Space 2, confirming multiplayer, an enormous space station called Sprawl, dialogue for Isaac Clarke and a wide array of weapons, monsters and more.
Multiplayer wasn't elaborated on, but RelyOnHorror's regurgitation of Game Informer's spread (via VG247) did promise we'll be able to dismember our friends. And we like the sound of that.
The new hub to everything will be Sprawl, a space station-cum-metropolis built around the remains of Saturn's moon. This dramatically dwarfs the Ishimura of Dead Space 1 and provides Visceral with variety: an opportunity to create shopping mall, church and school environments, to name a few.
Sprawl has been infected by the thought-to-be-extinct Necromorph and Clarke, the only person who knows how to deal with the menace, is called upon for help. He'll witness the Sprawl outbreak from the beginning, seeing death and panic spread rapidly through this rag-tag settlement.
Three years after the events on-board the Ishimura, Clarke's mind has unhinged, and Dead Space 2 will delve into his character much more deeply. He'll talk, for starters, and be under immense pressure his "twisted mind" may not stand - quite how that will manifest in-game we do not know.
The sequel has loads more suit upgrades and customisation options and each will be distinguishable visually. Clarke's arsenal will expand as well, as other weapons are brought in-line with the mighty Plasma Cutter. There's a new Javelin Gun that pins enemies to surfaces, and Telekinesis will be revamped and implemented more carefully. Clarke's a bit faster and more responsive, too.
The all-important horror element will return with bells on. Enemies will be less predictable and pacing will be more considered; at times you will feel like the hunter and at times you'll fight wildly like cornered prey. Visceral wants to lower the amount of monsters bursting out on you and instil an eerie, thought-provoking scare.
New monsters will help achieve this goal. One eye-catching addition is dead, grinning and naked infants that have no lips and sealed eyes. They'll dash at and pounce on Clarke, stabbing mercilessly at him with long claws. Another humanoid enemy literally spills his guts, which will infectiously slop towards Clarke.
Or there's a tentacled man who's gullet hangs from his mouth like an enormous tongue. He'll attempt to lasso Clarke and bring him close. But our favourite new addition are Stalkers: speedy pack hunters that will try to trick Clarke and out-flank him or lure him into a trap.
Missions, akin to these new monsters, will offer more variation and require brain-power as well as a quick trigger-finger to solve.
Zero-Gravity has also been improved, and allows Clarke to leap away from floors, walls and ceilings and float freely through environments, shooting as he goes.
And, as if that weren't enough, Visceral wants to litter the campaign with "epic" moments, like grand boss battles and scripted set-piece extravaganzas.
Oh, and RelyOnHorror's opinion of the screenshots were that Dead Space 2 is a "much more beautiful" game than the original.
Dead Space is in development for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The game has no release date.

Any machines that need fixing after tomorrow will not be returned until after the festive break
With two members of the MCV team having used Microsoft’s Xbox 360 repair service in the last couple of months alone, we know all too well the pain of being without your console – but if your Xbox 360 breaks from tomorrow onwards you could be in for a frustrating Christmas.
European Xbox Community Manager Graeme Boyd has today confirmed via Twitter that any machines sent off to Germany for repair after December 11th will not be returned in time for Christmas.
“From the Xbox Support Team – if you're getting your Xbox repaired tomorrow is the last day for pick-up to get it back before Christmas,” he explained.
Time to double check that your console is well ventilated.

MCV exclusively reveals that Sega shooter will hit shelves in February
Sega’s Aliens vs Predator will launch in Europe on Friday, February 19th, MCV can confirm.
The game will be available in three editions: Standard, Survivor and Hunter. The Survivor Edition comes in a steel case and features a code for downloadable multiplayer maps, which will be available post-launch.
The Hunter Edition will also contain the maps, as well as a posable facehugger model, a Weyland Yutani sleeve badge and a 3D lenticular postcard.

Microsoft has announced a new Xbox 360 update will enable users of XBL with a child account to access new services Facebook, Twitter and Last.FM, providing they obtain parental approval first.
Prior to the update, under 18s weren't able to use the social sites or music streaming service via the console.
According to a post on the Major Nelson blog, the update is available now for users in all countries except the US. The US will receive the update on December 15.
By using the auto log in options for each application, users won't be prompted for parental permission every time they launch the application.
"Thanks for your patience as we worked to develop the best solution to ensure that we are able to offer an age-appropriate environment for everyone on Xbox Live," reads the post.

Slasherking823 released a first experimental version of Hdd Explorer(info) 0.01 for Linux / OSX ... so you can now axx your Xbox360 HDD on your *nix based OS:
[QUOTE]
First of all i will just say if you don't know how to run an app as root you should not use this.
You will need some basic Linux knowledge if you don't want to fail.
Alright, to the app:
Please back up your hd with dd
Supports all fatx functions
20gb xbox 360 drives only for now
Uses the mono framework; on debian/ubuntu run: sudo apt-get install mono
Things are beta, don't expect everything to work beautifully. Encountering a corrupted file in a delete/extract usually is disastrous since my program assumes that the fat is right and limitless.
Injection/new folder better not be done when there are no open dirents (assumes directories are 1 block) or when the disk is out of space (assumes fat has space)
You will need to chown extracted files because the app runs as root
You will need to run this app as root
Please don't decompile as i didn't protect it.
That being said...
Commands (except cd/del) are entered as the letter that represents them and no arguments because i was lazy
EDIT: oh and yea, i apologize for any bad programming/report bugs in this thread, and linux/osx conresigner is near
EDIT2: oh, and with some systems you will need to load the exe with the command mono: mono /path/to/fatx.exe

Newly released today:
Square Enix is out with a set if mini posters that features all the main characters and their summon beasts. One of the coolest things in the game is that the summon beasts became vehicles. Odin becomes a white horse, Shiva becomes a motorcycle, take a look at all the racers or mechas that you can drive across the game fields.
Keep your papers organized with the Final Fantasy clear files. Even the most dreaded assignments look good if you see them through these files. We already have Lightning, Vanille and Snow, now we will have Sera Farron and Hope.
Strap Lightning's pendant on your phone. The simple but elegant design makes your phone seem stylish. Jewelry designers of Square Enix drew a series of runes onto the plate and put Swarovski crystals into the pendant to make it sparkle. This is for people who wants to show their devotion in subtler ways.
