Britsoft publisher Codemasters has confirmed earlier rumours that its Guilford studio is working on a brand new first person shooter IP headed up by creative director Stuart Black – who, as has been noted, was the man behind Criterion’s 2006 outing Black.
The title will be built using the EGO Game Technology Platform, which is the same engine that has powered recent hits such as Dirt 2, Race Driver: Grid and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
The game’s 80 man+ development team also includes former SCE London game director Tom Gillo and Andrew Wilson who previously was the senior producer of Black rock’s Split/Second.

Square Enix has admitted that some Final Fantasy XIII screenshots it released last week, which purported to show the PS3 and 360 versions of the game but were virtually identical, were "altered".
In a statement to Kotaku, the company said that the screens were intended for "pre-production", "non-promotional" use, and their release was a mistake.
It was Kotaku that noticed that the screens were absolutely identical save for the controller button prompts.
Square Enix said it would release new screens soon, but argued that the two console versions were as close as could be anyway. "Unfortunately we did mistakenly include screenshots taken for pre-production (non-promotional use only) in our latest release of assets," ran the statement.
"Screenshots from the final game intended for the press kit will be released shortly. As shown in our recent demo tour and Microsoft's X10 event, there is no material difference between the two consoles."
North American spokesperson Sonia Im said on her Twitter: "These were not meant to be released as a comparison of FFXIII on the two consoles... Aside from easily being proven as altered, and this method not being one we use, we don't feel there is a need to enhance the X360 FFXIII... This was obviously not intentional."

February 15th, 2010, 21:12 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft spokesperson Aaron Greenberg has said there are no plans to release the 250GB Xbox 360 outside of limited edition hardware bundles.
A Final Fantasy XIII package was announced just last week. Previously, the 250GB unit has been available as part of Modern Warfare 2 and Forza Motorsport 3 bundles, but never as a standalone product. Greenberg told Joystiq that limiting the release of the console is "part of what makes it special".
"We're always evaluating, but for now we feel like the 120 is serving us very well as the standard offering," he said. "And then having the 250 as a limited edition is a good balance."
So there you go.

Strategy specialist Gas Powered Games has announced that work has started on its next big project - a fantasy RTS called Kings and Castles, or quite possibly Chris Taylor's Kings and Castles.
It's described as "an epic real-time strategy game for the PC and next-generation consoles". Players will play as one of three kings vying for control of an "all-new, original fantasy world".
You'll also be able to follow the development closely on Facebook, Twitter (if you follow studio head Chris Taylor, a.k.a. DeathBot9) and at the game's website.
"We want to take our fans on a great adventure with us," said Taylor. "They'll get to go behind-the-scenes and watch the game come to life from start to finish... Synergy will be leveraged, and paradigms will be established. More importantly, buzzwords will be utilised."
Taylor said he wanted to "build the biggest fantasy RTS game" in his funny but otherwise pretty irrelevant first video blog.
Kings and Castles will use Gas Powered Games' existing technology platform, as seen most notably in Supreme Commander and the imminent Supreme Commander 2, due out on 19th March. "Key features include the ability to zoom to any level, incredible maps, and eye-popping visuals that will run on a wide range of systems," says the press release.
No publisher, release date or console platforms were mentioned. Both Supreme Commander games have Xbox 360 versions.

Microsoft is developing a new iteration of a 'large franchise' to work with Project Natal - and the mystery title reads like a hardcore game.
The info comes from a new Microsoft job ad spotted by CVG for a Level Designer. The candidate will work on a 'Project Natal Job' at the firm's Redmond Campus in Washington, US.
The job ad reads:
'MGS is looking for a talented, motivated and experienced Sr. Level Designer who can create innovative game-play solutions for a large franchise.
'The Sr. Level Designer is expected to implement major gameplay features to high quality, focusing on creating and implementing level designs. Qualified individuals are expected to be organized, with excellent communication skills, both verbally and written, and have a proven track record in AAA game design.
'Must have a clear understanding and experience creating mission/environment design, look and feel, AI, combat, strategy, game-flow, and balance. We want somebody who can put forth ideas without fear, and build off other people's zany creations.
'Candidates who find fault with other people's brainstorms to prove how smart they are need not apply. Candidates must have passion for a broad range of game experiences, and be well versed in market trends and styles. While years of experience are a definite plus, positive creative energy and a wealth of genius ideas is a must. This is a rare opportunity to join a seasoned, creatively driven team on an exciting next-generation project.'
'Experience creating mission design... AI... combat'?
This sounds very much like a core franchise to us. Then again, the bit about building 'off other people's zany creations' is less exciting.
What do you reckon it could be, readers?

Microsoft has unveiled more details about Xbox Live on mobile - revealing that users will now be able to increase their Gamerscore via handheld games.
Speaking at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Windows mobile boss Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said "multiplayer interaction" would also form part of the new service.
According to TechRadar, he said: "The spotlight... gives announcements about new games and new info available on the service... pan right and I can see Gamerscore, recent achievements either on console or on phone and I can see their avatar as well...
"At the far right is the collection of games featuring premium titles authored to Xbox Live which on the phone will support Achievements, letting you increase Gamerscore and letting you do multiplayer interaction with people on other phones but also on the PC and console as well."

Microsoft has unveiled its new Windows Phone 7 Series OS, with multimedia and gaming unsurprisingly at the heart of the user experience.
The company says the OS is built around six 'hubs' based on specific themes: People; Pictures; Games; Music & Video; Marketplace; and Office.
The standouts here are Music & Video and Games. The latter will deliver the first and only official Xbox Live mobile experience, including Xbox Live games, spotlight feed and the ability to see a gamer’s avatar, achievements and gamer profiles from the communities 23 million members.
Music & Video, meanwhile, will be the mobile representation of Microsoft's Zune brand, combining PC content, online music services and FM radio.
Microsoft is promising that users will be able to turn their media experience into a social one with Zune Social on a PC.
The company says devices powered by Windows Phone 7 Series will be available in time for the summer.
Among the companies already committed to include Windows Phone 7 Series in their portfolio are AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, and manufacturers Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC Corp, HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm.

Some might have been disheartened to hear that Crysis 2 was swapping the lush rainforest environment of the first game for a more familiar city setting, but developer Crytek has promised to deliver a "unique" take on New York in its upcoming shooter.
"I Am Legend and The Day After Tomorrow were unique and both 'owned' a version of New York," Crytek president Cevat Yerli told Edge. "Ours, likewise, is in harmony with the Nanosuit. In Crysis, we changed that island in ways the player didn't expect. Expect bigger here. It'll be a New York City like none in games or cinema."
Executive producer Nathan Camarillo said: "It was a large island in Crysis but you weren't interested in every square inch. There were large expanses, funnels and action spaces, and we're doing the same with New York. It's a comparable size.
"You have this freedom to explore these small pockets and go really deep on details, but seeing all of New York isn't necessarily that exciting, and it's not great for pacing or telling the kind of story we want. It's a constrained freedom," he continued, adding that the action will span "three storeys up and down".
"We know what was good about Crysis, what we needed to improve and what was fun about the game, and we can build on a core we no longer have to find. We can have those signature moments that only Crytek can do in realtime - those five big things you'll remember forever."
Publisher EA said recently that Crysis 2 will launch before December 31, 2010 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

We didn't get any more details about Microsoft's Project Natal add-on for Xbox 360 from the X10 event, but tonight Smallville viewers got to watch someone else whipping their arms and legs around trying to catch imaginary balls flying out of their TV screen. Short of some actual time gesticulating wildly in front of that motion sensing cam this is the closest thing we've got to actually using it, but as the clip (embedded after the break) shows, girls are likely to be more impressed by someone that can fly.

Microsoft's robust X10 video game showcase this week in San Francisco was just the tip of the iceberg for the Xbox 360's 2010 offerings, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg told Kotaku.
"To be this early in the year and able to have an E3-quality line-up with triple-A blockbuster titles, that really speaks to how big a year this will be for us," said Greenberg, director of Product Management for Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE. "This is just a glimpse of the quality of products we're going to bring throughout the full year."
The day-long X10 event included a chance to talk to the people behind a laundry list of big games including Alan Wake, Halo: Reach, Fable III, Splinter Cell Conviction, Dead Rising 2, Lost Planet 2, Crackdown 2 and new content for Left 4 Dead 2.
"If you're a core gamer we've never ever had a line-up like this all in one year, plus [motion control add-on Project] Natal, plus everything we're doing around [online service] Xbox Live innovation," he said. "Last year we saved a lot of our big news for E3. This year we absolutely have a lot of big news for E3, but we have so much that we are starting early.
"It's going to be a big year... it's going to be the biggest year in the history of Xbox."

Microsoft and Bungie have solved whatever problem was preventing people downloading Halo 2 DLC ahead of the loss of Xbox 1 support on Live in April.
In order to access the various map packs in time for the FPS game's grand send-off in two months' time, just fire up Halo 2, make sure you're on Xbox Live, and find the Content Download option through the menus.
This news item clearly isn't long enough, so here's a gratuitous link to our Halo 2 gamepage, where you can read the original review and find lots of other relics of Xbox Live's first huge success story.

Ready to see a few seconds of Fable III in action? Ready to see Peter Molyneux and other Lionhead staff tell you how awesome it is? Check out the first developer diary of the game above.
Molyneux introduces the "extreme morph" system, which allows players to show their alignments in dramatic ways at the press of a button. His example? "You're walking along and someone upsets you.You can press this expression, and out of your back appears these huge angel wings. A shaft of light comes down and shines on you. Everyone around you steps back, and, 'Oh, my goodness!' You're showing your true character."
The Fable III peek also briefly introduces the weapon morphing system and the "touch" system, and it features several shots of people being stabbed, sometimes with interesting-looking weapons. Good stuff.

via Eurogamer
Presenting at Fable III at X10 in San Francisco, Peter Molyneux has revealed that the RPG - if you can still call it that - has no experience points or health bar.
Health is represented by the screen-colouring effects common in action and FPS games - Fable III has no HUD most of the time - while your character grows in power according to how many followers he or she has in the game's world of Albion. Levelling up is also represented by your weapons, which grow and change appearance according to how much and how you use them.
"It's an RPG without a health bar or experience," Molyneux said in a demonstration. "Because we put the levelling up into the world, with followers, you don't need experience."
Why make the change? "The absolute main reason is that most people didn't really understand it," Molyneux told Eurogamer later. "When you asked people how to get red experience, they'd say, 'I don't know, sometimes it's green, sometimes it's red, sometimes it's blue'."
Molyneux came to feel that experience was out of date, and out of step with Fable's themes. "Why do you just get experience for combat? It seemed wrong. This game is expressions and getting married and doing things in the world that should be as significant as fighting. So as soon as we said the word followers... just saying the word followers, what people think of you, meant more to the entirety of the game.
"Experience seemed 1990s, it seemed old school."
It was the same thing with the removal of the health bar, he said. "We haven't removed the health bar, we've just copied other games. First-person shooters, the health bar's in the world. When your health gets low the corners of the screen go red, sometimes it goes black and white - that's a health bar man, it's just the same as a little bar, it's just that people see it.
"As soon as you say those things you think, Jesus, why was I so stupid beforehand," Molyneux said. "It just seems like these are legacy things."
These are the changes which Molyneux feared fans would be "pissed off" by. "If I remove experience and health bars, and I put levelling up from a 2D interface to a 3D interface, some people are going to get really upset, but that's not a reason not to do it, man. It's actually a reason to do it."
But he still thinks of Fable III as an RPG. "I still love the idea of levelling up... I love seeing myself and my hero grow and get more powerful. That to me is what role-playing is all about. I love the idea of being able to choose, that's another thing about an RPG."
For more on Fable III - including the weapon morphing system, the online features, and the Touch mechanic first revealed at Gamescom in Cologne last year - watch out for a full feature preview shortly.
