While you never necessarily needed cable, the one gap in internet video service has always been the lack of live sports. According to the NY Times, Microsoft and Disney are looking to change that, bringing ESPN to your Xbox Live.
Xbox Live users can already access dated content via Netflix, but this move towards live streaming would be a major one towards killing off cable once and for all. Especially since it targets a dedicated audience (sports fans) that has significant overlap with Xbox Live's built-in gaming community.
The set-up would be similar to that of ESPN 360, which is already available from some ISPs. It would be based on a per-subscriber fee, and would include live streams of sporting events and possibly also interactive games that incorporate the ESPN brand. We'll update with more details if and when they're available.

EA has confirmed it will only be shipping its $600 AUD ($550 USD), 250GB HDD-equipped "super elite" Xbox 360 bundle (breath) to Australia, according to a report from VG247. "This is a local bundle deal that the [EA Australia] team has sorted," an EA representative explained.
The bundle is said to contain two black wireless controllers (standard Microsoft issue) and a wired headset; a regular, non-fancy copy of Mass Effect 2; an Xbox 360 Elite (sans promotional artwork, unfortunately); and a 250GB HDD. Just like the Modern Warfare 2 "Super Elite" console, we imagine supplies will be limited -- to Australia, in this case.

You might be wondering why it's XeDEV who are releasing this.. Since some people left the team, they don't want to retain the "freexex" name anymore. Also changed the name to XeXMenu (this is because XeXLoader is now much more of a menu than just a loader). So enjoy the new stuff :
What's news/fixed:
- Gametitle extraction from NXEART if possible (toggle)
- Games with more than just one XEX will show up multiple times
* Embedded FTP Server to transfer your stuff directly from your computer
- Use xbox:xbox@ip:21
* Use FTP to read/write/delete your onboard flash
- Only user flash/flash is able to do that!
* Support for all found XEX files. Not just default.xex (toggle)
* Shows the content of any GAMES folder on any device
- Use GAMES, APPLICATIONS, EMULATORS for auto discovery menu on each device
* Switch between games/apps/emus in the discovery menu using RB/LB
* Auto scale skins for most resolutions (toggle)
* Different help screens for each menu
* Use DPad to switch between devices while browsing files
* Xbox1 compatibility partition support (if exists)
- Xbox1 partition known as "HddX"
* Alphanumeric listing for files
* No more XEX auto patching when copying DVDs
* Manual XEX patching for freeBOOT users
* Configuration menu
* Real XBox save system for the configuration
- Gamesave known as "Unkown Xbox Game"
* Chose between different skins from the configuration menu
* Support for own skins
* many more things we can't remember
Press "BACK" for detailed help pages!
Note: If you only get a black screen on startup try to delete the XeXMenu savegame known as "Unknown Xbox Game" using system tab in dash.
There are some issues with the FTP upload speed for some people at the moment. We're still working on that. This will be fixed in further releases!
Install :
LIVE) Copy the C0DE9999 folder to HDD1:/Partition3/Content/0000000000000000/
... or use the XEX version
FTP) To prevent the Xbox from connecting to Xbox Live you can set up your network as follows:
- Use an IP adress outside your routers DHCP IP pool. If your router use 192.168.1.100-200 for DHCP you could use 192.168.1.210
- Set up your computers IP as gateway.
The XBox should be able to connect to your computer now but won't get access to the internet. If you have a second NIC just make a direct connection to be sure
Use xbox:xbox@ip:21 to connect

Redline99 utility Xbox 360 which will allow you to flash / dump / update your Nand directly from an executable Xbox 360 (. XEX).
Use:
Place the root of a USB device:
1) To flash a full NAND image:
- Rename your image XBReboot for your console updflash.bin
- Run loader Flash360.xex your favorite (or other XeXLoader)
- Make a backup of your NAND with the X button
- Flash your NAND with the A button
- In the submenu of your NAND flash you can choose to leave in place the KV and Config already in place (recommended) or NAND flash entirely (you'll need in the latter case, have injected your KV and Config XBReboot in the image).
- Once the flash is complete, your console should die alone.
- Unplug the power to perform a full reset of the console.
2) To flash that parts of your NAND:
- Updslot0.bin - Xell (Address 0x0C0000 maximum size 0x040000 bytes, without metadata)
- Updslot1.bin - Reboot (address 0x100000 size 0x140000 bytes maximum, without metadata)
- Updpatch.bin - Rebooting Patch (address 0x194000 size 0x004000 bytes maximum, without metadata)
Notes:
- Updflash.bin - the image file of your NAND must contain metadata / ECC bytes. This is a nand complete except for containing some NAND memory (256/512).
- Flash360 check the area for bad blocks. If remapped blocks are found, the writing mode the flash will be configured to flash the image without modification. If any remapped blocks are found, the writing mode the flash will be configured to flash the blocks as they are present.
The operating logic of relocation blocks apply only to the part Flash. This means it will not try to correct blocks located in the memory (if present).
- A quick check of KV will be made if you choose not to copy from NAND up. Flash360 can now retrieve the key CPU to completely verify the KV before writing. If it detects a difference in the 1st part, a warning will be displayed before starting the procedure.
- If Flash360 is launched from HDD, USB or MU, you can save the NAND. The backup will be copied to the same location as the executable Flash360.
- On consoles with memory (256/512):
You can choose to save the entire NAND or just part Flash (66MB). This means you can choose to not flash as part of your NAND Flash.
- Once the NAND flash done, do not turn on the dash and do not display the guide (middle button). An automatic extinguishing mechanism is implemented upon return to the main menu.
- Food must be disconnected to allow a full reset of the console.
Warning:
The user must verify the validity of files to be flashed.
NAND flash is risky.
Similarly, during the flash, no action on your console. Do not use the Guide button, not run from any action before the NXE (download etc. ....)
Coming up:
- The development of Flash360 is still ongoing and new features will be added later.
- A new version will soon Xell proposed version will incorporate many features found in Flash360.
This utility requires that your console is already capable to run unsigned code (JTAG / XBR / Freebooter).

Uber Entertainment has announced a brand-spankin' new Xbox Live Arcade title by the name of Monday Night Combat. Just what is Monday Night Combat, you ask? Paraphrasing our own JC Fletcher, it looks a bit like Team Fortress 2 ... if Team Fortress 2 were a game show. Presented as a game show and "sport of the future," Monday Night Combat is a class-based third-person shooter, in which teams compete for "the real American dream: cash, fame and endorsements."
The game sports six different character classes, a create-a-class feature and two gameplay modes, the co-operative Blitz mode and the competitive Crossfire mode. This one really came out of nowhere, but if it's anywhere near as good as the trailer makes it out to be, we could be in for a real treat. Expect it to arrive later this year.

Platform holder Microsoft has clarified a statement that it released earlier today that appeared to claim that Xbox 360 sold 10m units in the US in 2009 – a number that didn’t correspond with official NPD figures.
“In 2009, Xbox 360 console sales topped 10m units globally,” Microsoft has now stated. “More than 1.3m sold in the US in December, contributing to a worldwide Xbox 360 install base of 39m.
“Previously we had unintentionally indicated Xbox 360 sold 10m units in the US when in fact this is a global number. Apologies for any confusion this may have caused.”
Microsoft does not itself specify the sales figures, though NPD has confirmed to MCV that the console sold 4.77m units in the US throughout 2009. Its lifetime US sales stand at 18.7m.
The number means Xbox 360 outsold PS3, which shifted 4.3m consoles in the region in 2009. Nintendo's Wii shifted 9.6m consoles and the DS 11.2m.
The clarification stems from enquiries from MCV after readers of the site picked up on the 10m figure, which arose from the following statement:
“In 2009, US Xbox 360 console sales topped 10m units, with more than 1.3m sold in December, contributing to a worldwide Xbox 360 install base of 39m.”

We became considerably more concerned about Project Natal's future when we learned it would be pulling its processing power from the 360 and it would seem that the development community is similarly conflicted. In a feature by Develop, probably the most important party in the peripheral's success, the developers, weighed in on the device with a mixed bag of concern and enthusiasm.
Though there was a good amount of positivity and skepticism, the overwhelming sentiment is in line with Weaseltron director Adrian Hirst's wait-and-see attitude: "Microsoft need to start showing some real killer games/applications for Natal before people really start getting interested in it as a platform."
So, here's your chance: What's your Natal prediction?

While newPCgadgets.com has chosen to give the product seen above the name "Xbox 360 Security Locker," you could conceivably store just about any gaming paraphernalia you might happen to have lying around. This point is actually driven home by the product image itself, which clearly shows several PlayStation 2 games being stored in the locker. For $39.95, the locker holds four controllers and 15 games, or zero controllers and 30 games or whatever you can cram into its 15 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" frame. The locker also includes the pictured padlock, hence the whole "security" part. Honestly, we can't help but point out that the locker is easily small enough for the average criminal to lift.
Then again, you probably have a good idea of where your little brother will be hiding it anyway; he's not very bright

US consumers spent $4.8 billion on Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories in 2009, according to Microsoft, with $1.1 billion in sales during December alone.
The company also claims $2.7 billion was spent on Xbox 360 games during the year, with the console accounting for a 43 per cent share of third-party sales – or $2.4 billion.
As revealed last week, the console has sold 39 million units worldwide, with an average software attach rate of 8.8 games. The Xbox 360 sold 10 million units in the US during 2009.
The company is bullish on 2010, claiming it will be the "biggest year in Xbox history", as it launches new motion control peripheral Project Natal and exclusive titles such as Alan Wake, Halo: Reach, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction and Crackdown 2.
NPD results show that the Xbox 360 sold 1.31 million units in December, behind rivals Sony and Nintendo.

After numerous trailers for the upcoming Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition's zany costumes, Capcom has finally released a trailer focusing on both of the extra DLC story chapters. "Lost in Nightmares" takes place before the events of Resident Evil 5 and includes a mansion inspired by the setting of the very first RE game. "Desperate Escape" takes place during the end of Resident Evil 5, as Jill and Josh race to save Chris and Sheva from the endgame's exploding volcano.
With Jill serving as the "main character" for the additional content, the Gold Edition expansion looks like a genuine sequel, a la Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Most importantly, we're glad to see Jill's masterful unlocking skills put to good use in this trailer. The first batch of RE5 DLC will be available on February 17.

Microsoft claims 10m US sales in 2009 whereas NPD figures point to sales of 4.7m
Questions are being asked about Microsoft’s claim that Xbox 360 console sold over 10m units in North America in 2009.
That number comes from a Microsoft statement released in the wake of NPD’s December and 2009 report which reads: “In 2009 US Xbox 360 console sales topped 10m units, with more than 1.3m sold in December, contributing to a worldwide Xbox 360 install base of 39m.”
However, eagle-eyed MCV readers have pointed out that this number seems very much at odds with NPDs own numbers.
Though NPD has not released concrete 2009 figures, adding together the Xbox 360 sales from each of the firm’s monthly reports from 2009 comes to a total of 4.7m – less than half of Microsoft’s claimed amount.
The possibility of the 10m number representing the Xbox 360’s lifetime installed US user base can also be dismissed – this news hit the headlines in May 2008.
Nintendo has stated that the Wii sold 9.6m units in the US in 2009 and Sony has pegged PS3 unit sales at 4.3m.
MCV has contacted both Microsoft and NPD for clarification.

Rockstar has reportedly responded to accusations that work conditions at its San Diego branch are "deteriorating" and that Red Dead Redemption's creation faced "big problems".
According to Kotaku, Rockstar responded via the following leaked internal e-mail, in which it states that it doesn't agree with the allegations and that Red Dead Redemption is looking like a "stellar game".
Here it is, in full:
"Dear Rockstar San Diego
"No doubt you are all aware of the comments made on Gamasutra regarding some internal dynamics at the studio and some people's dissatisfaction with the environment. We take issues related to working conditions extremely seriously and will look to address any genuine concerns immediately.
"It's been a challenging few years, and a tough last few months as the game moves towards completion, but the final product of all that incredible effort is on the verge of finally being received by the public: the stellar game that is Red Dead Redemption, a game of which you all should be justifiably proud and which you should be excited to see come to market.
"We do not agree with the allegations in the Gamasutra post (e.g. there has been no reduction in health benefits or ancillary benefits and perks (such as free dinners and massages etc), wage increases across the studio have kept track with cost of living increases, and anyone who feels they have been overlooked for a bonus for a game they worked on please contact HR to discuss as soon as possible). Nevertheless, we do know that the team is working very hard right now, and we care deeply about the physical health and mental well-being of every single person on our team.
"We are committed to working through any issues anyone at the studio may have, and to providing support wherever possible. Please, if you have concerns, discuss them with Sarah Shafer or with Rob Spampinato who heads up HR for the whole of Rockstar and who will be on-site in the studio for the next few days (Rob is sitting in the "new york" office). If you would prefer to speak to someone in confidence outside of Rockstar, please contact Chris Casazza, who oversees HR for Take Two.
"Red Dead Redemption is rightly one of the most anticipated games of 2010, and we're incredibly proud of the entire team for the truly outstanding work that's gone into making this remarkable game as good as it is. Here's hoping we can give this game the reception it deserves this April."
Earlier this week a Gamasutra letter penned by San Diego employees' wives claimed that the working conditions at the developer "persists to deteriorate as employees are manipulated by certain hands that wield the reigns of power in Rockstar San Diego.

The biggest bombshell of the 2008 E3 gaming expo was the announcement that then PS3 exclusive Final Fantasy XIII would be released on the Xbox 360.
Final Fantasy XIII, which was released only on the PS3 last December in Japan, will be released as a multi-platform title this spring in the West. While many games these days are multi-plat, many of these titles also have a "lead" platform.
Take Bayonetta. It's available on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, but the lead platform is the Xbox 360 — comparison here.
In the case of Final Fantasy XIII, the lead platform is the PS3 — the game was originally conceived and designed as a PS3 title. That's not good or bad, it's just the way things are. But does that mean Xbox 360 users will be getting an inferior version?
Not necessarily so, says game site 1Up. The site was able to check out the Xbox 360 Final Fantasy XIII demo and had this to say:
It was...a pleasant surprise when I discovered FFXIII runs just as smoothly on 360 as it does on PS3. It's a brisk, action-packed RPG with tons happening on the screen at any given time (and the series' requisite flashy visuals cranked up to full throttle), yet I didn't see a hint of slowdown or choppiness or screen tearing or any of the other visual hiccups that serve as hallmarks of a sloppy port. Admittedly, I didn't see the two versions running side-by-side — the bus set them apart with a looping trailer dividing the kiosks — but I honestly saw no tangible difference from my time with the PS3 version.
That disclaimer is important. Both versions were not compared running side-by-side; however, according to 1Up, there does not seem to be noticeable differences between the two versions to the naked eye. Does that mean there are differences? There could be. There just doesn't seem to be.
Smart of Square Enix not to run the machines right next to each other.
In the coming weeks and months, stay tuned he inevitable side-by-side comparison.

Ubisoft has told Eurogamer that Splinter Cell: Conviction was delayed to add "a bit more polish", and not because Q1 2010 is unconventionally bursting with big-name releases.
"The game looks brilliant, but we want it to be awesome," a spokesperson added.
The move was made overnight, when Sam Fisher's latest romp went from a confirmed 26th February release into the murky waters of FY2010, which begins 1st April 2010.

A couple of interesting articles followed Robbie Bach's announcement at CES that Project Natal, Microsoft's controller-free Xbox 360 control system, will be shipping in time for the 2010 holiday season, writes blogger Peter Smith. First, Popular Science has a nice look at how Project Natal works, focusing mostly on the software and how 'Microsoft engineers are teaching the Natal 'brain' what various parts of the human body look like so that Natal can tell your ascot from your elbow.' Microsoft is staying mum on the hardware, although Smith notes that we know it involves an infrared camera. 'If you don't care about how the tech works but just want to know if it'll be worth buying,' writes Smith, 'you might be interested in an interview with Robbie Bach in the Financial Post. In the interview Bach claims that 70%-80% of Xbox 360 developers are working on some kind of Natal-enabled gaming software, and he assures us that first-party studios are also hard at work.
