This Thursday at 12:30am ET, the new season of GameTrailers TV is set to debut with a look at Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Specifically, the trailer for this week's episode promises that the show will display the first footage of the game's single-player campaign (we've seen multiplayer already, after all). Beyond the Bad Company 2 footage, GTTV will also have a clip from the upcoming Halo Legends anime collection. This might be a stretch, but we're guessing there will be Spartans in it.

Consumerist reader Adam thought it was safe to take his Xbox 360 on a plane with him. He'd received assurances from US Airways that it was. Uh, no. It wasn't.
Upon landing, Adam says he opened his luggage and found his Xbox 360 had been cracked open. He also found inside his luggage something he didn't put in there: a small ziploc back. Full of "tiny metal components". Components that used to be inside his Xbox 360, which was of course now completely busted.
Contacting US Airways for a "please explain", Adam was told "tough luck"; seems security suspected something was up with the 360 (even though it must surely be a fairly common item), and security feels it has no need to explain itself.
Our advice? A DS can fit in your carry-on baggage...

Rising Star Games has announced that it will be publishing Samurai Shodown Sen in Europe.
The latest instalment in the long-running series will be brought to our shores in Spring this year, having already been released in Japan late last year.
"The kudos the SNK series carries sits comfortably within our portfolio and fans of the sword-fighting series won't be disappointed; the 3D graphics simply must be seen," says Martin Defries, managing director, Rising Star Games.
And you can see them, in the attached screenshots. So have a look at them because remember, they simply must be seen! We're not sure what happens if you refuse...

Xbox group product manager Aaron Greenberg has said that Microsoft doesn't want to mislead people with its MS Points virtual currency and that it is looking to display real currency alongside points following the success of doing so for Games On Demand.
"We never intended to mislead people," Greenberg told G4. "We want to be transparent about it, and so it is something that we're looking at.
“How can we be more transparent and let people see it in actual dollars? You've got to think that we have one service that we're offering around the world. The nice thing about Points is that no matter if you're on the JPY or the EUR or the USD – something that's 200 Points is 200 Points everywhere around the world.
"There's more technical complexities to being able to put local prices in. You have to do that for every product in every country and you then have to deal with currency fluctuations. So there's some challenges to that, but we absolutely did it with the Games On Demand, response has been good and absolutely it's something we're looking at doing."
Greenberg added that Microsoft was also looking into another fix that users have been calling for - the ability to have more than 100 people on a friends list.
"I've been answering this question for so long," he said. "It's something that the team's looking at. It's more complicated than you would think.
"Exactly when that happens I can't say because there's some technical requirements tied to it. But I can tell you that, just like consumers, I share the same frustration and I, too, want more than 100 friends, and so know that we all want that and that we are working on getting that fixed."

Were you quick enough to catch the handful of Halo: Reach screens released via the EBGames website? Well it happened, we assure you, and luckily the folks at XCast Online snagged the whole lot of 'em. That said, if you've already got the February issue of Game Informer, chances are you've seen these screens before -- that's because a good deal of them are directly from that issue's cover story on the upcoming prequel.
If EB Games has already gotten its hands on these screens, chances are we'll be seeing an official release from Microsoft in the not-so-distant future. In the meantime, we've pestered the publisher for some idea of when exactly that'll be.

January 20th, 2010, 18:35 Posted By: wraggster
US Xbox bigwig Aaron Greenberg has explained that Microsoft Points were never meant to "mislead" customers when buying content on Xbox Live.
Unlike Sony's policy on the PlayStation Network, downloadable content on Xbox 360 is not priced in real currency, but rather Microsoft Points (MSP), of which one is worth £0.0085 or €0.012.
Interestingly, Microsoft dropped this proprietary currency for Xbox Live Games On Demand, a service that sells full Xbox 360 titles for download for £20.
"We never intended to ever mislead people," Greenberg told G4TV. "We want to be transparent about it, and so it is something that we're looking at.
"How can we be more transparent and let people see it in actual dollars? You've got to think that we have one service that we're offering around the world. The nice thing about Points is that no matter if you're on the JPY or the EUR or the USD - something that's 200 Points is 200 Points everywhere around the world."
"There's more technical complexities to being able to put local prices in," he added. "You have to do that for every product in every country and you then have to deal with currency fluctuations. So there's some challenges to that, but we absolutely did it with the Games On Demand, response has been good and absolutely it's something we're looking at doing."
Greenberg also addressed the Xbox Live Friends list limit of 100, and revealed that he too finds the restriction annoying.
"Exactly when [a fix] happens I can't say because there's some technical requirements tied to it. But I can tell you that, just like consumers, I share the same frustration and I, too, want more than 100 friends, and so know that we all want that and that we are working on getting that fixed," he said.

EA's keen to expand hit Wii exercise game EA Sports Active onto PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
European bigwig Dr Jens Uwe Intat wouldn't say how, but by putting two and two together - the motion-sensing requirements of the game and Microsoft and Sony's new motion sensors - a release for Natal and the PS3 wand, possibly called Arc, seems likely.
"What we are actually going to do is certainly continue to work with EA Sports Active on the Wii, and we'll also try to extend that to the other two platforms in order to broaden our activity in that space," Dr Intat told GamesIndustry.biz.
"How we will work on that specifically, and what type of software and for what type of hardware, we'll announce in the future."
Intat did not mention plans to support the Wii Vitality Sensor, despite being asked directly about the device.
In EA Sports Active, EA had achieved the Holy Grail by making a third-party game that sold serious quantities on Wii. The game provides a high-octane workout and coaches owners from fat to fit in the style of a personal trainer. Even weighted straps are thrown in to make life more difficult.

January 20th, 2010, 17:17 Posted By: wraggster
There's much talk this morning of Zune phones after Jefferies & Company issued a note stating that Microsoft is preparing to launch a device based on Windows Mobile 7.
Microsoft has always maintained - at least on the record - that it's role in mobile is purely software-oriented, but with Google's recent unveiling of the Nexus it wouldn't be surprising if the Redmond company's long-rumoured Pink project came to fruition sooner rather than later.
In the note, analyst Katherine Egbert said industry sources were pointing to a launch within the next two months (either at Mobile World Congress or the spring CTIA show).
The device will apparently be Zune-like and be produced in partnership with an OEM.

January 20th, 2010, 17:16 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft VP of games Phil Spencer has said the company's decision to launch motion control hardware is "a huge investment" and one that's fraught with risk.
"If there isn't risk in Natal then I don't know what's keeping me up at night," said the exec, in an interview with Eurogamer. "We're trying something completely new where there's no device in your hand. We're trying to build a set of new games, new experiences that will have the same quality metrics of our past games, but really entice both existing 360 customers and new people. It's a huge challenge, a huge investment and it's fraught with risk."
Responding to accusations that Microsoft has historically taken fewer risks than Sony when it comes to first-party development, Spencer pointed to both Natal and Xbox Live as examples of the company pushing forward new ideas.
"When I look at Live and I think about the innovations in the XBLA space and the games that we've pushed forward, I actually would have agreed that a couple of years ago I thought some of the things we were doing online were not differentiated enough," he admitted.
"But when I look at the last year and the set of games that has come out from us in the Live space - we brought that XBLA focus into the first-party studios about a year ago, and I think the change in the quality of games that have come out is remarkable."
The studio currently has a number of creative people working on Natal titles, he said, adding that it was not being "overly-prescriptive" in the kinds of experiences that were being built, instead letting key creative talent experiment with the technology.
Resulting games would not naturally end up being casual ones, he said - instead he expects the Natal experience to feature in almost all games in the future.
"In terms of segmenting by genre or hardcore vs. non-hardcore, you should expect that over the years you'll see Natal experiences show up on almost all of the games - similar to the way you do with Live today. At the beginning of Live it was all about sports, racing and shooting games. Now if you found a game that didn't have some kind of Live functionality it would seem like it wasn't a complete game. I think Natal is likely to get there as well."
Earlier this month, it was revealed an internal chip had been dropped from Natal's final spec - predicted to be a result of cost-cutting.
Spencer refused to be drawn on how exactly that had affected the games in development for the platform, but did say Microsoft was nothing but positive about the current technology.
"As you can imagine, there have been hundreds of decisions made on the technology," he said. "The goal is always to make the games better and the experiences better. In no way have we had to cut back on the development of the games we're doing - they're more feature-rich today than when we started them a year ago."
He also couldn't confirm whether Natal would retail at the rumoured price of below £50. But he pointed out how aware Microsoft was of the importance of pricing.
"We know that price is important. Xbox 360 has shown that we're conscious of price points, and I think the price drops we've done have resonated very well. The momentum we've had in '08 and '09 is a combination of the value of our platform and the content we have.
"We understand, going into Natal, it's the same equation - we have to offer experiences and hit price points which really resonate with consumers. This is a broad consumer product. It's for the entire audience which has 360s today and the millions of people who will buy 360s because of Natal. We understand that only works if we hit consumer price points."

January 20th, 2010, 17:13 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's Project Natal is the most anticipated technology to be released this year, according to a survey of games industry professionals.
49.8 per cent the GamesIndustry.biz Network members taking part in an exclusive poll backed Microsoft's motion control device, due for release around the Christmas season this year.
In comparison, only 6.9 per cent of respondents voted for Sony's PlayStation 3 motion controller, while a further 4.5 per cent highlighted motion control technology in general as a significant step forward for the industry this year.
Publisher support for Project Natal has been more significant, although notably very little software has been shown publicly. Activision, Capcom, Konami, Bethesda, Disney, Square Enix and Sega are all on board, and Ubisoft has said that it has twice as many games in development for Natal than for Sony's peripheral.
THQ has pledged day-one support for both devices, and in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz today, EA's Jens Uwe Intat said that EA Sports Active – originally a Wii exclusive – will "extend to the other two platforms."
The PlayStation motion controller – rumoured to be called Arc – has been confirmed for a worldwide autumn release this year, meaning both systems are likely to go head-to-head during the Christmas sales period.
While only two 3D console games were released last year (Ubisoft's Avatar and Namco's Invincible Tiger), the future of stereoscopic gaming also piqued interest in the annual survey (7.1%), as did the future possibilities of cloud gaming services such as Gaikai and OnLive (3.8%).
Other technology mentioned included the rumoured Wii HD, a true successor to the DS console, the evolution of gaming on Facebook and other social networking sites, DX11 for PC gaming and games built using Crytek's CryEngine 3 console engine.
The GamesIndustry.biz Network currently consists of 11,414 members.

We have supported C4E and Team Jungle for some time now and it is so ridiculous to us when we see so much garbage and drama being posted around on different forums. First we see some sites trying to sell iXtreme LT for stupid amounts of money, then the price goes in half then it doubles then it shows as out of stock? Then of course everyone bitches about C4E even though this wasn't his idea and these guys also forget that the iXtreme firmwares are his work and no one else's - he owes nothing to no one. He should be lauded with credits and support not with bitching and whining, I'm surprised he even bothers any more but we also know how much he loves to do this work. It really is pathetic to see some fools post crap like that, but i guess the console scene never changes does it.
Now we see attempts at "cracking" a pre-release demo version of the LT firmware and people trying to gain credits and "pats on the back" for this work. All we can say is - we've looked at both firmwares - the real Lt and the leaked one. Take our advise - don't use the leaked incomplete version and connect to Xbox Live.
We developed bios's for many years and know how much time and effort it takes to do this kind of work - we fully support C4E in all the work he does and as members of the scene we thank him for it.
Anyway the guys at Team Jungle have updated their Twitter page with this info:
"iXtreme LT will release shortly as promised for free. Unofficial files are incomplete and unsafe. Protection was to prevent unofficial use!"
Maybe you should start giving a few posts of appreciation - then maybe you will see Benq, Samsung & Hitachi versions too - because they won't come from anyone else we can assure you of that much.

Ever had the urge to crank out some nasty riffs in the kitchen, record them, and then watch as millions of Xbox 360 owners rush to download your jam(s)? Don't lie. In a move that marks the next logical step of the Rock Band journey, Harmonix has confirmed that an open beta registration of the Rock Band Network will open up later today for Xbox 360 users, enabling amateur (or professional... or novice!) musicians to record, convert and upload tracks to a network where gamers can judge how awesome / not awesome any given song is. Reportedly, those seen as "good enough" will be made available for sale (you can price each tune from $1 to $3), though we're hearing that the actual conversion process isn't a lesson in simplicity. In fact, some outfits are offering their services to take recordings from .wav files to ones that the game can understand, but with rates of $500 per minute (of music), we're guessing that only serious artists will apply. And if you've ever heard "that local band" willing to play shows for free, you'll agree with us when we say that this barrier to entry is probably a good thing.

All of that Project Pink/Zune Phone rumor madness is back with one statement by Jefferies analyst Katherine Egbert:
"Our recent industry checks indicate Microsoft will be debuting its own phone sometime in the next two months...We expect the new phone to debut soon, at either the Feb 15-18 Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona Spain, or possibly at CTIA in Las Vegas one month later."
Egbert believes that the Zune Phone will be birthed from a Microsoft/OEM partnership similar to what we've seen between Google and HTC with the Nexus One. She also believes the phone will feature a 5MP camera and 720P video support—neither of which are huge stretches of the imagination

The game, which is available everywhere except for Australia and Japan (soz!!), features innovative controls and enough skater clothing to keep even the cast of Dirty Sanchez pleased. Read our Skate review for the verdict.
Also available to North America, Australia and New Zealand is Brave - Warrior's Tale, which we've never heard of.

DJ Hero was the number one new intellectual property by revenue in the US and Europe during 2009, according to publisher Activision and the NPD Group.
The game and peripheral launched at a price of around £100 in the UK and around $120 in the US, and is the latest in the publisher's high-priced game releases.
"DJ Hero has transformed music gaming by marrying an innovative turntable controller and exhilarating gameplay with the biggest artists and incredible music from around the world," said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.
"Consumers and critics agree that DJ Hero is one of the best music games ever created and further establishes Guitar Hero as the premier franchise of its kind."
The publisher is expected to detail sequel plans for DJ Hero this year. The amount of additional music for the game released as downloadable content has not been as prolific as for the Guitar Hero games, in part due to a more complicated licensing structure.

The Opposable Thumbs blog is running an interesting article contrasting everything Activision did "wrong" in creating and marketing Modern Warfare 2 with the game's unqualified success. Despite price hikes, somewhat shady review practices, exploit frustrations, and the dedicated server fiasco, the game has raked in over a billion dollars in sales.
"There was only one way to review Modern Warfare 2: on the Xbox 360, in Santa Barbara, under the watchful eye of Activision. Accepting the paid trip, along with room and board, was the only way you were going to get a review before launch. Joystiq noted that this broke their ethics policy, but they went anyway. Who can say no to a review destined to bring in traffic? Shacknews refused to call their coverage a 'review' because of the ethical issues inherent in the situation, but that stance was unique. The vast majority of news outlets didn't disclose how the review was conducted, or added a disclaimer after the nature of the review was made public. This proved to Activision that if you're big enough, you can dictate the exact terms of any review, and no ethics policy will make news outlets turn you down."

It’s no secret that XBMC just saw a major release with version 9.11 Camelot. What many don’t know is that development for the X in the name (Xbox) stopped two releases ago. That is to say that Team-XBMC no longer officially develops for the platform because of its inability to handle true-HD and many types of compressed content.
But, remember that this is an open source project. Just because the development team has moved on to more powerful hardware doesn’t mean the end of the 733 MHz wonder. There have been one or two folks maintaining the branch and backporting as much as they can.
It seems the that Camelot can now run on the original Xbox hardware. Both the skin and video playback must be set no greater than 720p to ensure smooth playback but that’s not much of a drawback considering that all video being played will still need to be upscaled to get to that resolution. There is also a repository of Xbox friendly skin hacks that allow newer skins to play nicely with the meager 64mb of ram available. So rejoice, you can have Camelot, and it’s crown jewel that is the new Confluence skin.
