Microsoft has sent out media alerts to inform the press that the company is once again holding an 'X' event to unveil and showcase the year's Xbox 360 highlights.
According to a report on the Seattle PI, Microsoft sent out a media advisory on Monday afternoon announcing X10. The company has previously held several 'X' events that have all followed the format of showing off and announcing upcoming Xbox 360 games and add-ons.
The event began in 2001 with X01 and ran right up to X06 in 2006. X07 was canceled and was the last we had heard of it. The new event is scheduled to last only four hours and will take place on Thursday, February 11 at the Terra event center in San Francisco.
Games you can expect to see demoed to the press will undoubtedly include Halo: Reach, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, Fable III, Splinter Cell Conviction and Project Natal.
There should also be a few surprises announced at the event too if previous formats are anything to go by.

Regular Zune users may have already noticed the alert warning of some impending downtime, but those that haven't should know that Microsoft is advising folks that some maintenance scheduled for tomorrow could last for as long as 24 hours. That will begin at 10PM PST on January 25th, and will affect all Zune services, including Zune Pass, Zune Marketplace, Zune.net streaming and Zune video on Xbox Live. Once the service is back up, users will also have to update their PC software, and users of Zunes other than the Zune HD will also have to update their device's firmware. This scheduled maintenance is also apparently just that, maintenance -- although Microsoft is promising that things like Smart DJ and other features announced at CES, as well some as "unannounced features," will be rolling out in another update sometime this Spring.

The original Xbox has been cracked six ways to Sunday, giving us the distinct impression that those consoles still in use are, at this point, providing services very different than its designers intended. XBMC is largely responsible for that, turning the original big black box into a more than respectable media machine, and now modder Richard Wileman has given it a redesign to suit its functionality. He's replaced the original, full-sized HDD with a 2.5-inch model, performed a DVDectomy, and wedged everything into a svelte, aluminum case. There's even an IR port on there for remote control and a wee LCD for checking playlists without turning on the TV. It's less than half the size of the original and, by our count, more than twice as attractive.

Free downloadable content has already been released for Mass Effect 2, days ahead of Friday's launch. Don't read any further if you're allergic to even tiny spoilers.
The nine pieces of DLC can be queued for download from the Xbox 360 website (well spotted, IGN). We're not sure whether these are supposed to be free or if there has been a mix-up.
Links to each of the additions are below. Note that other territories will need to change the "en-GB" part of the URL to suit their region.
Collectors' Weapon and Armour
Terminus Weapon and Armour
Inferno Armour
Sentry Interface
Umbra Visor
M-29 Incisor Sniper Rifle

Microsoft and Apple, already strange bedfellows if we're to believe Apple's seriously considering Bing over Google on future iPhones, are at it again, albeit indirectly. This time it's Microsoft's turn, as they present counterarguments in an Xbox 360 antitrust case.
The disgruntled player is a company called Datel Design & Development, which dubiously argues that Microsoft is monopolizing the market for "Multiplayer Online Dedicated Gaming Systems." With their supposed monopoly, Microsoft is allegedly controlling the related market for accessories by using software-related barriers that bar 3rd party devices from competing with Microsoft Xbox 360 accessories. In a nutshell, this means Datel's unlicensed Game Genie-type cheats device is barred from being sold for use on the Xbox 360 platform.
Now, I say dubious because Datel conveniently leaves out any mention of market leader Nintendo Wii, as well as the PS2, PSP and DS handhelds in its argument. If one only considers the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the dominant market, as Datel does, the argument has some merit, maybe. Add in those pesky "other consoles"—the ones Datel says don't count because their owners aren't really gamers, or something—and poof, a little bit less believable.
Nevertheless, the Datel complaint led Microsoft to cite Apple's legal battle with Psystar, and hence the strange bedfellows comment above. From the Microsoft motion, transcribed by TechFlash *deep breath*:
[Psystar responded with antitrust claims] "much like those alleged by Datel, alleging that Apple had sought to monopolize a primary market for the Mac OS as well as the aftermarket for hardware that could be used with the Mac OS and had tied the Mac OS to its own hardware. [Much like Apple owners agreeing to the OS X EULA] Xbox 360 purchasers knowingly and voluntarily gave Microsoft the right to prohibit the use of unauthorized accessories...each Xbox 360 comes packaged with a software license requiring consumers to agree that the Xbox 360 software can be used only with Microsoft authorized accessories."
The one thing I'll give to Datel is their accessories really expose how Microsoft gouges us all with their accessory pricing. For $30 MS gives us 512MB memory cards. For $40, Datel sells us 2GB. The case goes to court March 1.

Though Microsoft's Project Natal won't be released until later this year, indie studio Arkedo has already revealed a canceled project for the peripheral. Called 2 Finger Heroes, it was to be a beat 'em up where your fingers do the fighting. 'Characters would be controlled by moving your fingers, while special moves could be done by incorporating your whole hand. The environment could even be affected by moving your arms folded at your chest.' On why it was canceled, one of the developers said, 'One of the design flaws of this, apart from the fact that it demanded some very precise pattern recognition from the Natal system, is that it would have been HELL to localize. Yup, what can be understood as the victory sign in France could be a terrible insult in the UK, for instance. And we are not even talking about Italian. Oh, the possibilities..

Team XeDev released XM360 v0.4:
[QUOTE]
This includes all of the features of XBLA Unlocker previously released by dstruktiv.
The additional "Collection Management" is contributed by node21.
What's new/fixed (v0.4)
* Added ability to launch titles directly from the Scan list, or the Collection Manager List (for titles that you actually have) [use the A button]
* added support for multiple usb devices being connected
* More information is added the the resulting xbla_report.txt so you can choose to ignore missing titles that are rated very low.
* Some titleIds are intentionally duplicated since they exist in the wild, but aren't on the MS web site. You should simply "Ignore" (with the X button) the versions that you don't have (assuming you care about such things)

Ize on forums.xbox-scene.com released a tool that will allow you to easily reduce the size of your Xbox360 games (for homebrew Xbox360s):
[QUOTE]
I've thrown something together that at least batch removes systemupdates and replaces moviefiles with placeholders, it can also delete alot more based on simple config files.
I assume that you are saving your games in xexloader / xexmenu compatible path like: USB://Games/Game
You just select the folder usb://games and the program will scan for systemupdates, movies and if available for smart cleaner files (who isn't really that smart ;p) compatible games

First of all, happy new year to everyone and welcome to 2010. Looks like it’s going to be a good year for Xbox 360 enthusiasts with all those neat applications coming in on almost a daily basis now. We have not held a winter sleep either and continued to further improve the Cygnos360 V2. We have made major improvements to our Cygnos360 v2 Firmware which is now in 1.03 final. (you can get it here) We have significantly increased the flashing speed for 16Mb xbox 360 NANDs.
With the new firmware v1.03, programming takes 24 seconds and reading 28 seconds. That is a full image, not a partial!

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is heading to Xbox Live Arcade this spring with some revised sprite work.
Like many of SNK’s fighting games, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum was not designed with HDTVs in mind. So, SNK went back to the drawing board (literally) and made new character art. Those pictures above compare Ai and Yuki from the PlayStation 2 release to the new Ai and Yuki in the upcoming Xbox 360 version.
NeoGeo Battle Coliseum uses the new artwork for the character select screen and has updated 3D backgrounds. Head over to Famitsu for another look.

Rising Star Games has plucked the European rights to Samurai Shodown Sen and plans to release the Xbox 360 fighting game over here in spring.
You'll be transported to historical Japan (1608 - 1868), where people stupidly fought with swords and not GLOCKS YO. [Bertie's breakdancing lessons have gone to his head I think - Ed.]
Familiar faces will include Takechiyo, Suzu, Haohmaru, Galford, Hanzo Hattori, Nakoruru and Ukyo Tachibana.
There are over 20 in total and their styles span sword-fighting, axe-wielding, spears and many more. Moves like Power Slash return, and they'll be complemented by Rage Explosion and Guard Shatter.
The Samurai Showdown series, made by SNK, began millions of years ago on the NeoGeo. Samurai Showdown Sen, will be eleventh game so far.

Bungie has reaffirmed Halo: Reach as a standalone entry for the series, stating that both spiritually and in terms of content, "Halo: Reach for us is not Halo 4."
"It's not a continuation of the Master Chief story, nor is it the start of a new trilogy. For us, it's a completely standalone game," executive producer Joseph Tung told the latest issue of Edge Magazine.
"We desired to make a standalone title, something that is the culmination of a decade of our efforts building halo titles," creative director Marcus Lehto added.
Of immediate note will be a darker, more gritty world where enemies are scary rather than animated children's toys. Bungie's built the Elite - the main enemy - "from the skeleton up".
Also, characters will fight without helmets or take them off to talk, which has provided Bungie with a chance to use motion-captured acting for the first time. Even weapons are heftier and more brutal, and plasma guns will leave burning residue on armour to reflect their murderous intentions.
Halo: Reach also distances itself from Halo 3 in terms of technology, which has been gutted and rebuilt to achieve more. "We are definitely bending the Xbox as far as it'll bend," added campaign lead Chris Opdahl. There'll be co-op and multiplayer to prolong the experience, just like in other Halo games - but Bungie's also got something else up its sleeve to keep you coming back for more.
"Without giving anything away, there's certainly some cool stuff we're doing in Reach that will encourage people to replay the campaign. There are going to be some big surprises in the campaign..." said a teasing Joseph Tung.
Halo: Reach will be released this autumn exclusively on Xbox 360, and Microsoft's already expecting it to be this year's Modern Warfare 2.

Delayed sneak-'em-up Splinter Cell Conviction has reappeared on the radar with an April 2010 date.
The PC and Xbox 360 game was delayed from a pin-pointed 26th February date earlier this month, with publisher Ubisoft citing "a bit more polish" as the reason for the move.
Conviction follows Sam Fisher on a journey of revenge - a fire he fuels by smashing people's heads into crusted urinals on his hunt for information.

Square Enix has officially confirmed plans to release a limited Special Edition Collector's Edition of Final Fantasy XIII.
The pack contains the game, the official soundtrack CD, an art-filled hardback book, three art prints and a 'Brand of the l'cie' decal, all packed into a branded presentation box. There's no mention of price, but this seem to be the same Collectors Edition prematurely outed on the GameStop Italy website earlier this week, which prices it at €79,98 (about £70).

Gears Of War creator Epic Games has told CVG that it has 'no regrets' over agreeing to release the Gears Of War series exclusively on Xbox 360.
Much-talking analyst Michael Pachter said yesterday that he believed the company lamented its exclusivity deal.
However, Epic VP Mark Rein told CVG today:
"We have a great relationship with Microsoft and we have no regrets."
So that's that, then. Or maybe not: You can never discount Mr Pachter's big mouth making another appearance.
Do you think Epic made a blunder by signing Gears to Xbox, readers?
