New from Mr Modchips
If your Xbox 360 controller is losing some life, its time to administer some First Aid. The First Aid Kit includes new rubber mats for your controller, as well as replacement thumbsticks with potentiometers.
Bring your old controller back to life. This first aid kit fixes two basic problems. Fix the problem with "dead buttons" by replacing the rubber pads that the buttons rest on. After several years of heavy gaming, these pads can wear out and not provide the "spring" back that they once did. Replacing the rubber mats is easy and requires on the most basic skill. This kit also includes replacement thumbsticks assembly. This includes the mechanism for the thumbsticks plus the potentiometers that work with the mechanism. Replacing the thumbstick mechanisms requires intermediate soldering skills.
What's In The Box :
1 set of rubber mats for your controller. This includes 2 different shapes.
2 thumbstick replacement mechanisms.

The newest version of XeXLoader boasts a pretty slick GUI. This is a homebrew loader for the Xbox 360. Don’t get your hopes up, it requires an older kernel and you’re not getting on Xbox Live if you do this hack.
But think back to when the original Xbox was first hacked. Watching the XeXLoader (after the break) sends us back to the days of EvolutionX. Sure there wasn’t much that could be done in those early days (other than pirate games), but that slowly changed with the hard work of a lot of developers. XBMC came out of those first steps and became the greatest media software ever to grace your television. The GUI work here may be more beginning steps in another great community-driven legacy.

Pakistani reader Saad was thrilled when he heard that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was getting a multiplayer map set in the city he calls home, Karachi. That is, until he played it.
"I, being a Pakistani, was so excited at seeing a Karachi map and then immediately so disappointed when I played the map," says the Karachi resident. The map has Arabic written all over, even though that isn't the country's language.
The country of Pakistan has two official lingos: English and Urdu. With somewhere between 60 and 80 million speakers of the standard language, Urdu has more speakers than, say, Italian, Korean or Polish.
"Infinity Ward probably thought, 'Oh hey its a Muslim country so Arabic is the language,'" says Saad.
While Arabic and Urdu use the same script, the words are completely different. For example, the noun "people" is "al-naas" in Arabic (الناس), and "log" or "loug" (لوگ) in Urdu.
"To someone who doesn't know urdu won't be able to tell the difference," Saad explains. "It's like Spanish and English, I guess. Some letters are same, some are different but the words are completely different."
There isn't a single Urdu word on the entire Karachi map and no one writes in Arabic in Pakistan.

This past summer, we learned that Mass Effect 2 players could import save files from the previous entry in the franchise, bringing all of the decisions made in the first game into the sequel. But are decisions capable of decimating hordes of insidious, robotic invaders? No, boosted stats and abilities are -- and according to a recent forum post from BioWare Community Coordinator Chris Priestly, players who import their saves will get access to these as well.
Of course, you won't be able to play as your super-high-level Shepard when you import -- however, the higher your character's level was when you finished Mass Effect, the better bonuses your Mass Effect 2 Shepard will receive. Some of the bonuses mentioned include extra money or crafting resources when you start the game. In addition, though BioWare has said that the game won't have a "New Game Plus" option, Priestly says that multiple playthroughs with the same Shepard will be possible.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...VuEOexrrBb.php
It looks like Microsoft started banning homebrew Xbox 360 (running freeBOOT or XBReboot) from Xbox LIVE. This was of course highly expected to happen any time soon.
There are many ways for Microsoft to detect these modifications, no stealth or anything was implemented (nor is there any will from the dev community to do this considering it would even be possible).
Homebrew and Xbox LIVE don't go together, nor should they probably.

Know bug : Some games preview could cause memory corruption (a very few spotted) and cause crash and weird things. If it's the case, delete the file "nxeart" and "nxebg.dds" from the game directory.
Note : if the list you get at start up is empty you can do left or right to get the normal file listing.

Rab released new version of his tool to check/verify your Xbox 360 NAND dumps and potentially even repair them if you have at least 3 'bad' dumps.
What's new/fixed:
* reduce block size for 256/512mb nands (to 0x4000 + ecc) based on user feedback (nandpro uses small block numbering so our output didn't match up with nandpro)
* make gui more responsive when operating on large nands

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...llulkTcylh.php
FreeXeX released a bug-fix release for their QuickBoot application released earlier today/yesterday.
This new version fixed a bug on XP where the png's had to be in the same directory as quickboot.exe or it would crash.
About QuickBoot:
[QUOTE]
QuickBoot allows you to build "short cut" LIVE containers that will allow you to launch applications directly from NXE.
The three main advantages of this are:
* Saves time by loading the application directly, rather than having to use XexLoader to browse the file tree and find the executable.
* Bypasses the 4GB size limit on live containers as you're not actually storing the application data in the live container, merely making a shortcut to it.
* Allows you to load applications off of external hard drives etc. straight from NXE.

News via http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...VuJdOCTDMR.php
Another launcher has been released for homebrew-enabled Xbox360 consoles.
From gsx302 on forums.xbox-scene.com:
[QUOTE]
This was coded by a friend, with permission to post. He wishes to remain anonymous, and therefore will.
This is an alternative launcher, that was created in said "30 minutes", and may be upgraded soon. As you can see, the pace on this moves fast, so dishing out big updates should be easy for the developer.
It features a UI, Game launcher, and a file manager, to copy/paste/delete files.
Keep in mind, when you copy, it counts files, so if it stalls for you, it's a beta, it's just counting files.. give it a second..
When it's pasting.. the UI will appear frozen until it is complete, and then it will resume.
Same with deleting, but it is fast usually so it is unnoticeable.
Two methods to go about utilizing this..
* Disc:
Download the ISO from the usual places, and burn it using a program such as ImgBurn to a CD/DVD/etc. Pop it in, and click play game.
* Hard drive(Game Demo):
Download the VIPER360_LIVE.rar, extract the contents, and you will have a "CODE7777" folder. Place this in your "Content\0000000000000000\" folder on your hard drive. Now when you go to games library, you should have a Demo called "Viper360". You can boot that to utilize it.

If you thought only a semi-deity like Ben Heck could splice consoles into laptop-shaped cases, here's some evidence to the contrary. This week, CollinE from Ben's forums put the finishing touches to his own, rather professional looking, Xbox 360 laptop. Adorned in a red and black color scheme that features a throwback giant X on the top lid, his 360 stays true to the original console in almost all respects -- including the "wind tunnel" noise generated by Collin's five fans. The fact he also consulted our guide on how to do this is just a cherry on the top for us, and you can find a video tour of the hardware after the break. Should it take your fancy, the machine's now on auction with all proceeds going to the "make Collin's Christmas merrier" foundation.

Microsoft also added a chart for this year’s top ranked downloadable content in Japan on Xbox Live.
Idolm@ster: Live For You took the top slot. Namco Bandai released this game last year, but continued to add DLC well into 2009. Xbox 360 owners in Japan must love splurging on idol-style games because Dream C Club is number two and Idolm@ster is in third place.
Again, it’s unclear how the 2009 ranking added up. Best items? Most downloads? Most profit? Who knows. Anyway, here’s the list.
1.) Idolm@ster: Live For You!
2.) Dream C Club
3.) Idom@ster
4.) Fallout 3
5.) Otomedius G
6.) Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
7.) Street Fighter IV
8.) Tales of Vesperia
9.) Record of Agarest War
10.) Rumble Roses XX

Microsoft posted a list with this year’s top ten Xbox Live Arcade games on the Japanese marketplace.
Not sure what the criteria is to be on the download ranking chart (sales? downloads? critic ratings?), but this is worth a look for a rough idea of Japan’s preferred Xbox Live Arcade games. Number two may surprise you!
10.) Mega Man 9
9.) The King of Fighters ‘98: Ultimate Match
8.) Ikaruga
7.) Shadow Complex
6.) R-Type Dimensions
5.) Trials HD
4.) Marvel vs. Capcom 2
3.) Castle Crashers
2.) Battlefield 1943
1.) Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram

Whoa, whoa, whoa, lady. When I said, "try safe, effective, fast-acting kick his ass," for video game-playing kids who won't listen, I did not mean "ventilate his abdomen with a kitchen knife."
Authorities say a 13-year-old Scottish boy was stabbed by his 55-year-old babysitter after he refused to stop playing his Xbox (original or 360, naturally, unspecified. I'm betting the latter.) While Isobel Mackenzie says the wee lad cut himself to get her in trouble, she did her case no favors by admitting to getting drunk before the incident. A three-day trial found her guilty and ...
She was ordered to do 300 hours' community service. Now, a seven-plus work weeks picking up busted condoms by the roadside is no picnic, but for stabbing a kid, that's a wow. Over here, Lord knows what sentence she'd have drawn.
While we're on this subject, can I rant about something else? Is it a law that cop reports don't specify what console or game people are playing when stupid stuff like this happens? Not that it changes the facts of the case any, but - soapbox here - I'd argue that this persistent generic treatment is one reason games are portrayed so trivially in these types of stories.

Yes, forthcoming DLC packs, "The Battle of Forli" and "Bonfire of the Vanities," were originally intended to be included in the main Assassin's Creed II story. But, as the game's creative director Patrice Désilets told Kotaku, "I felt that, 'Okay, there were too many things to do and to finish.' So we said, 'Ok, let's take a portion of the game that was planned and we'll give it in DLC.'"
The candid Désilets went on to point out, "I think we gave them so much content that they cannot say that we owe them, that we didn't give them a lot for their 60 bucks." So, don't think of the missing chapters as something torn from your disc of Assassin's Creed II that you paid good money for. Think of it as dead content that's getting a rebirth thanks to the wonders of DLC.
