Electronic Arts is gunning to reduce the Call Of Duty series' success this year - and is pinning its hopes on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to land the first blow.
That's according to the fighting talk of the firm's European boss, Jens Uwe Intat.
He claimed this week that the launch of the game was EA's 'first strong attack' on the Activision franchise - and that its developer DICE could "take on Modern Warfare".
"In March we will launch Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which is our first strong attack on Call Of Duty," he told MCV Magazine today.
"The shooter space is one we don't want to give up. It's an important genre and we were the number one. So we are certainly working on how we can get that crown back and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is an important product in that context.
He added: "If any of our studios can take on Modern Warfare, then it's DICE."
We reported yesterday that DICE had made it easier to kill in B:BC2 than in the original game - perhaps in an attempt to make the game accessible to MW2 fans.

Microsoft is to extend its Xbox Live Video Marketplace to ten new countries this year, the company has announced.
In addition to the eight that can currently access the service, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Australia and New Zealand will all be added in autumn this year.
The service's expansion follows the news this week that Microsoft is to launch an XBL Game Room where users will be able to socialise with their avatars and play retro arcade games.

Peripheral manufacturer Razer is dipping its shaved toes in the console market, announcing "preliminary approval" from Microsoft to produce an Xbox 360 controller and headset. The $50 wired Onza -- that's the controller -- will have Razer Hyperesponse technology that'll "give faster actuation and a crisp, tactile feel." What's that now? Oh, oh, we pressy the buttons and they make the things happen? Gotcha! Why not just say that? That's what we want from a controller.
The Razer Chimaera headset, which will retail for $130, features 5.1 channel virtual surround sound. The headset also allows "multiple Razer base stations to be connected to create a direct, private communication channel for in-game team conversations" -- or the rest of us can just start a party chat? Best part, though, the "circumaural design of the headset allows for optimum noise isolation for long-hours of comfortable gameplay." Thus allowing gamers to totally tune out their parents, spouse, or crying and hungry child.

To go with their big address at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier today, Microsoft released some statistics on Xbox Live and the Xbox 360's install base.
To date, around 39 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide, while there are 20 million people on Xbox Live (no disclosure was made on how many are Gold subscribers). Odd, you would have thought the ratio on that would be much higher considering Xbox Live is one of the console's main drawcards.
As for those Xbox Live users, 10 million have used non-gaming applications like Twitter, Facebook and Netflix. Only half? Again, would have expected it to be a little higher.
Rounding out the numbers was news that 500 million Xbox 360 games have been sold since the console's launch. That's nearly 13 per console. Not bad.

Microsoft's announced the pricing for the newly announced Game Room for Xbox Live and Games for Windows - Live.
Playing a game will cost 40 MSP; that's 38 pence here but 50 cents over in the US - two quarters.
It's more expensive to own an arcade, because although the space itself is free, each game cabinet costs 240 MSP (£2/€2.80) - 400 MSP (£3.40/€4.65) if you want it on both PC and Xbox 360.
That sounds quite pricey to us, not to mention the currently unknown price of decorations to wow visiting friends with.
Game Room was announced last night at the Microsoft CES 2010 keynote. There'll be 30 classic game cabinets to buy at launch, and a total of 1000 to be available in the next three years.

PopSci got an exclusive look into how Microsoft is creating a learning brain inside Project Natal to figure out just where your body is in front of your TV. It's impressive, to say the least.
Rather than programming by hand a way for the built-in computer in Natal to detect the thousands of ways the human body can move, they fed it thousands of shots of people in various poses. They also gave it mocapped video, which already had body points pinpointed. The resulting "brain," which is still under serious development, pinpoints about 30 body parts automatically and creates a wireform human figure 30 times a second.
It's fascinating stuff, so be sure to check out the full article. Natal should be out by the end of 2010.

Microsoft's Major Nelson has said that this spring's Modern Warfare 2 downloadable content will be released on Xbox 360 ahead of PlayStation 3.
In a CES update, Major Nelson confirmed, "This Spring, the first Modern Warfare 2 content packs will be available exclusively first on Xbox Live."
How long the period of exclusivity would be was not revealed.
Back in August Activision publishing boss Mike Griffith said that there will only be two downloadable map packs released for Infinity Ward's shooter. No mention was made of any possible exclusivity deals.

GamesIndustry.biz has learned that Microsoft has dropped a chip from its forthcoming Natal motion control system as the platform holder eyes accessible price points in the build-up to release later this year.
The chip, which was responsible for processing information for the Natal's 'bone system,' has been removed in favour of a software solution.
However, development sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that the change doesn't have an effect on the existing system lag of about 100ms, while a software solution should enable Microsoft to update the system more quickly and regularly than a hardware solution, meanwhile hitting a previously-speculated price point of sub-USD 50/GBP 50 - although this price rumour has already been scotched by Microsoft's Neil Thompson.
The load previously handled by the chip now falls on one of the main three Xenon processors, but while taking a "percentage" of performance away from the system, most games don't use up 100 per cent of the available processing power anyway.
"The full Natal hardware/sensor combo always looked like an expensive proposition in a market where Microsoft really needs to turn a profit," said Digital Foundry editor Richard Leadbetter. "The notion of offloading the processing to the 360 CPU in the name of lower costs and easier upgradability makes sense.
"Patching up older games to run with the new hardware now looks rather unlikely unless they have the CPU time to spare, but hopefully this will serve to focus developers on Natal-specific concepts as opposed to revisiting old classics."
In the support material for the recent CES keynote by Microsoft, the company hinted that there was no longer an on-chip solution: "A proprietary software layer makes the magic of 'Project Natal' possible. This layer differentiates 'Project Natal' from any other technology on the market through its ability to enable human body recognition and extract other visual noise."
The removal of the chip almost guarantees that non-Natal games won't be patched to include motion control support, a point previously outlined by Microsoft Game Studios' Kudo Tsunoda.
It has also emerged that Microsoft will support developers writing their own code to run the bone system processing in the future.
Motion control is likely to be the key battleground for Xbox and PlayStation platform holders in 2010, with both Natal and the Sony's new motion control system set for release.

Users will also be able to build and customise their own space within the service when it launches this spring, with 30 titles available on day one, including Space Hawk, Sea Battle and Millipede.

Microsoft has confirmed that Project Natal, the motion sensing peripheral for the Xbox 360, will be released in time for Christmas 2010.
Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in the US, Microsoft's Robbie Bach claimed "2010 is going to be the biggest year in Xbox history."
Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, confirmed that the Xbox 360 has now sold over 39 million units worldwide, with the original Xbox and its successor generating over USD 20 billion in revenue and 500 million pieces of software.
The news of Natal was originally leaked before the keynote address when a video interview with Robbie Bach was aired ahead of time, with a power cut also holding up proceedings.
Ballmer also noted Xbox Live experienced its busiest week ever between Christmas and New Year, with a new member joining every second and more that 2.2 million concurrent users.
Nearly 10 million people have logged into Xbox Live's non-gaming applications, which include Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Last.fm, Sky, Canal and Zune, with over 20 million users registered on the Live service.

Accidental release of Robbie Bach CES video says new kit will 'revolutionise how people think about the games business'
A Microsoft slip-up has accidentally released a CES video which confirms Microsoft's Natal controller will launch later this year - as MCV revealed in November.
The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas tomorrow, opened tonight by a special Microsoft keynote from the software giant's boss Steve Ballmer.
But, as reported by Joystiq, Microsoft's Channel 9 developer community site mistakenly posted a video of Entertainment & Devices Division president Robbie Bach talking about new Xbox features, including Project Natal.
The now removed video - which it is expected will reappear later on - shows Bach name a highlight for the division this year, including the 3D camera-based device.
"And then you look at what we have coming in the Xbox space, with Project Natal, which I think is going to revolutionize how people think about the gaming business, and actually turn into..." a transcript of the video quotes him as saying.
The video also lets slip news of a 'Game Room' service for retro games heading to Xbox Live - but the sketchy details are expected to be properly fleshed out later today.
Microsoft's Ballmer himself had previously said the Natal kit was due this year, but the firm quickly downplayed his assertion.
Since E3, the format-holder has been keen to scotch any word on the timing of the hardware's release - but after a behind-closed-door publisher and developer tour late last year industry sources confirmed to MCV that Natal would be out this November.
This latest video release only makes it all the more likely that Project Natal will be a key release for Microsoft this side of Christmas 2010.

News via http://www.eurasia.nu/index.php
After a great deal of requests we have designed a simple switch for all the Liteon drives that enables firmware full read/write. We have also included an On/OFF Led to show correction operation when switching to 0×72 vendor mode. The installation is very simple and takes about 60 seconds if you have some small experience with a soldering iron. It has been tested with the original DOSFLASH methods and also the new Jungle Flasher 0.1.69. All Liteon drive version have been tested with 100% Success. There is no need to remove the LT Switch after it has been installed – simply switch to normal mode.

Microsoft's CES keynote doesn't begin for a few hours still, but it looks as it the crux of the consumer electronics news from it is already flowing. Purportedly, a leaked interview (that has since been yanked) showed Robbie Bach, President of the Entertainment & Devices Division, talking up two things of utmost importance. The first of which is Project Natal, which is Redmond's attempt to add full-body interaction to the game console. The news? It's looking like 2010 really will be the year said product hits the shelves, and it's seeming more and more likely that the well-known Natal moniker will stick for retail. The other bit is a so-called Xbox Game Room, which is "supposed to bring back that retro fun to gaming." That's fairly ambiguous, but we can't say that our interest isn't piqued. Hang tight for what we hope will be the official announcement later this evening -- the day has only just begun, you know?

Sales of Xbox 360 overtook those of Wii in the UK last year, making Microsoft’s console the top selling format in software terms in the UK in 2009.
Xbox 360 raked in £459m in sales throughout the period according to numbers from ELSPA, generating more revenue than any other platform. Wii still won in raw unit terms, however, with 18m games sold.
The news marks a mixed few days for Nintendo’s machine. Record breaking performances in the US and Europe, as well as an impressive recovery in Japan, have been countered by publisher apathy from Capcom and Sega.
