January 14th, 2010, 16:20 Posted By: wraggster
Warner Bros. has signed an agreement to produce a new series of games based on classic kids' TV show Sesame Street.
The terms of the deal were not revealed but are presumably A-OK with company president Martin Tremblay, who said the games will be aimed at pre-school console users.
According to the Associated Press, which annoyingly thought of a joke about being brought to you by the letters W and B first, release dates have yet to be announced. However, it has been suggested the games will make use of Sony and Microsoft's new motion-controller technology.
"That makes it very easy and is developmentally appropriate for preschoolers, as opposed to dealing with a very complex controller," said Sesame Workshop's Terry Fitzpatrick. "We also think that kind of technology will make it incredibly fun for parents with a preschooler to be engaged around a gaming activity together."
This news story was brought to you by the number oh what's the point.

Considering Assassin's Creed 2 managed to stab 1.6 million wallets in its opening week alone, 8.5 million units sold by March isn't that crazy of a forecast. Add star talent and some upcoming DLC to give the game a second wind, and that potential sales figure seems somewhat reasonable -- even for a titlle that doesn't feature machine guns, 'nades and nukes.
When we saw Stern Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia call that very number over on Industry Gamers, we kinda shrugged and thought, "Sure, it's possible." Bhatia says Assassin's Creed 2 was initially off to a slower-than-expected start (thanks Modern Warfare 2!), but for the December quarter, its sales expectations rose "from [roughly] 5.5 million units to 6.5 million units." Thus, Stern Agee raised its sales forecast from 7.5 million to 8.5 million units by the end of March. Hey, we told you the game was good!

Over the course of this year's CES, it was easy to get swept up in the fervor around 3D technology. Not Microsoft's Xbox team lead Aaron Greenberg though -- in speaking with G4TV, Greenberg said he thinks "there's a lot of challenges about 3D in the living room." To Greenberg, it's not a question of technology (or lack thereof) that's holding back 3D, it's the home environment. "I don't know about you, but when I play games or watch TV, I've got my phone, I've got all kinds of things going on. I get up, I get down, I'm looking outside at the weather and it's ... I'm not in a dark theater, wearing glasses, staring at a screen. I think it's just a different environment."
This isn't to say Microsoft isn't flexible when it comes to consumer demand -- quite the contrary! "As consumer interest for 3D grows, we'll grow with it," Greenberg admitted. "I think right now we're unsure what level of interest there is from consumers to really want a 3D experience in the living room."
Currently, only Avatar, Invicible Tiger, and upcoming XBLA racer Scrap Metal support 3D on Microsoft's console. "If it becomes really important and people want to do more with it, we're absolutely happy to support it," Greenberg assured. Of course, with plenty of resources currently invested in the development and launch of Project Natal and its motion-based technology, Microsoft certainly has incentive to keep interest in 3D at arm's length.

Those downloadable versions of Xbox 360 games, wild and crazy in their Games On Demand pricing, have ventured closer to reasonable as of today, with a handful of titles getting slashed.
That includes BioShock, Saints Row, MX vs. ATV Untamed, Prey and Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, according to an update from Xbox Live's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb. Four of those five titles have been dropped to $19.99 USD for those of us spending that type of dollar—down from $29.99 in most cases—a price point that sees them fall closer in line with their physical media partners. Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution will set you back $29.99.
You'll have to check your own currency at Xbox Live Marketplace to see if the savings has been applied to your territory. We mean you, Australia!

If your subscription is paid, you can watch Netflix for free on your computer, your Blu-ray player, your PS3, and soon, your Wii—but not on the Xbox 360. Microsoft, it's time to kill the Xbox internet tax
In case you don't own an Xbox, what I'm talking about is Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming/content/social network system for the Xbox 360. The free, or "Silver" version of the service offers a slim set of online capabilities, limited to game demo and add-on downloads, and some downloadable video content. But all the other stuff the Xbox does online—the online gaming, the movie and music streaming, the social networking—requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription, which costs $50 a year, $20 every three months, or $8 a month.
In return, Microsoft gives you online gaming, something which has obvious costs for them, and which I can understand paying for. But they're also effectively selling you access to services that aren't theirs, services that are free, or services that you've already paid for:
• Netflix. If you have access to Netflix instant streaming, you're already paying at least $9 a month for the service, and whatever you pay for your broadband connection. You can stream it for no extra charge on all other consoles, and the content is streamed from Netflix's servers, so why are we paying Microsoft for this?
• Last.fm, Twitter and Facebook. These are recent additions to Xbox Live, and Microsoft obviously spent a fair bit of time and resources devising new interfaces for these services. It would be fair, then, to charge a set number of Xbox Points for these apps, but to charge a recurring Live Membership fee to access these otherwise free services doesn't make sense.
• Zune. This, of all the services in the Xbox Live Gold ghetto, makes the least sense. In the Zune video marketplace, you pay for movies with Xbox points. In other words, you have to pay for Zune movies or TV shows twice: once with your Live Gold membership, and once with your actual media purchase. UPDATE: A Microsoft rep got in touch:
All Xbox LIVE members, including Silver, can rent, buy, and stream videos from Zune on Xbox LIVE.
That did seem like a little much—I stand corrected.
I'm not saying that Microsoft should scrap Live altogether, or that there can't be a paid tier for the service. I'm also not saying that other companies are innocent here—Sony, while they're not charging for Netflix access, do require a Sony-tied login to access it, which seems like an unnecessary, albeit costless, extra layer between you and the external service you've already paid for. I'm just saying that Microsoft needs a Live subscription system that only asks you to pay Microsoft when Microsoft gives you something in return. Charge for online gaming, charge for Netflix Parties, charge for things that cost money.
Just stop charging us for things that we've already paid for, or that we don't—or even can't—pay for anywhere else.

Microsoft's Robbie Bach has revealed that "something like 70 or 80 per cent of the publishers in the world" are making games for Natal.
"Our model is certainly about third-party publishers making money," Bach told the Financial Post (via Joystiq) after dating Natal at CES 2010. "We design our system for third-party publishers.
"[Nintendo makes] most of their money through first-party games that Nintendo produces. That's absolutely their business model. And it's a great business model, it's just different, but it makes it hard for third-party publishers."
Microsoft's first-party developers will make a "few titles" to "show the way", added Bach, who hopes to kick-start the "breath and power of the ecosystem from our partners".
But Nintendo will not be Microsoft's only concern, as Sony's PS3 motion-sensing wand enters the market this spring as well.

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has surpassed $1 billion in retail sales worldwide since launch in November.
In its first five days on sale the game made an estimated $550 million worldwide, out-pacing theatrical gross figures of movies such as The Dark Knight, Avatar and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, according to Activision.
"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and videogame records," offered Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.
"There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game."

Microsoft has announced two dates for X48 - its XNA Game Studio event aimed at students - this year.
The first is February 19, where the game camp will set up at Birmingham City University, and the second is March 19, when the event will take place at the University of Huddersfield.
X48 is an intensive two-day games development camp aimed at design and developments students from across the UK.
Students will be challenged to create a game that looks beyond the traditional puzzler or first-person shooter based around a theme unveiled on the day.
As well as getting the chance to develop a game from scratch in a studio environment, competitors also receive invaluable mentoring from professionals in attendance. Post-event, their games will be made available on the X48 website where others will be able to play them and give feedback.
"It gives our faculty great pleasure to be able to host Microsoft's X48 game camp this year, giving our students and staff the opportunity to experience game development in a new fun and exciting way outside of the normal classroom environment." said Andrew Wilson, course director of two games courses at Birmingham City University.
"Bringing together the excitement and pressure of X48 with the global impact of the Imagine Cup will give students a real opportunity to showcase the potential of the next generation of games industry leaders and innovators," added Andrew Sithers, academic lead at Microsoft UK.

Here's yet another utterly gorgeous Final Fantasy XIII trailer from the boys and girls at Square Enix, whose art-drawing skills spawn worlds and people more beautiful than real life. Fact.
This is an extended trailer - so you may recognise certain scenes - with heaps of new footage, English-language speech and the western-specific Leona Lewis theme tune, titled My Hands, from her newest album Echo.
This is available on Xbox Live now too, if you want to watch it on your telly. It doesn't look like PSN has it yet though - maybe in tomorrow's update.
March 9 can't come soon enough.

Fans looking to upgrade their current Xbox 360 harddrive may want to wait. The 250GB unit may be making its way to shelves soon.
Online orders through GameStop, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy show the 120GB harddrive is no longer in stock. Reader tips and forum members have also noted the harddrive has been difficult to find in stores for some time.
When asked for comment, a spokesperson told IGN that Microsoft is still selling the 120GB harddrive, but would not specify where or for how much longer.
"Microsoft works closely with retailers to determine the best approach for our products in each market around the world. The 120GB Hard Drive is available for $149.99 (U.S.)."
It looks like Microsoft is making sure the retail channels are clear before introducing a 250GB harddrive if this is indeed the case. The unit is currently only available exclusively when purchasing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 bundle, though Microsoft at the time said it would not be sold separately.

Capcom has said it will bring back "a brand we haven't seen in a while" via Microsoft's Natal.
"I can't talk about what we're doing on Natal right now yet because we haven't announced it, although we have announced that we're working on stuff," said Christian Svensson, Capcom's VP of Business Planning.
"I think you'll see again a brand focus on what we're doing there [on Natal], perhaps a brand we haven't seen in a while."
So the question is, we haven't we seen in a while from Capcom? There are plenty of candidates such as Viewtiful Joe, Clock Tower, Darkstalkers... none of which are suited to Natal, at all. What Capcom series would you like to see brought back that could work on Natal?
